He was not human but his form was not that of a deer either. The Great Prince of the Forest had no b

He was not human but his form was not that of a deer either. The Great Prince of the Forest had no bare skin, nor did he utter a word, though he still stood on two legs alone, his antlers stood tall and intimidating but she did not grow weary for a second. He merely looked down at her ragged features, desperation and exhaustion illuminated her every being as she ran from a noble life she did not want. He turned to walk away, and she followed him.
A year later she bore a girl. After so much time with no words exchanged with any soul since her refuge in the forest she could only murmur the word faun when she saw the babes grasp of life, with her lower legs that of her father’s and her ears merged between the two species to a rounded point. The mother weeped the moment she looked into her green eyes, as green as the fields she roamed in her childhood.
The Great Prince had moved to other woods as she remained in her home out of sight, or so she thought. The Ancient forest’s trees blocked out the sun for the new child’s life as she learned to walk, scavenge, and interact with her surroundings. Within a year her antlers broke from flesh into two tiny knots resting upon her head, and a light hue of spots began to appear along her sides and creep up.
But the times came to a fierce end, war broke out across the land, outside the ancient forest where they could not have known, the holy war of all ages, one forged from fire and spreading with all the rage and chaos hell could muster upon humanity. The ranks of heretics were marched straight through the forest and directly to the hut of the little faun and her mother on the exact date of her 6th year alive by sheer fluke as they were marching to their next targeted territory. The men surrounded them in number that made the little fauns head spin, the ground seemed to shake as they engulfed the hut in numbers, staring at her spouting off nonsense that she didn’t understood as words to one-another. The little faun’s confusion disturbed her to a great extreme, she wouldn’t know what to do if it weren’t for her mother shielding her with dear life, weeping upon the fauns head in despair.
Then in an instant she was gone, snatched away and replaced with a horrified sound she had never heard before… screaming. Screaming coming from her mother, so overwhelming that the little faun could no longer hold herself up, she lost balance but before her knees could touch the soil, she too was snatched up, her eyes closed as the sounds of her mother echoed in her mind, “Forgive! forgive! forgive!” in crackled screams that have been haunting her for years and only ending with her mothers demise, the unforgettable sound of her neck snapping.
It was always dark and the never-ending snow couldn’t even light the black stone fortress. Her captivity proved to become a normality for her, they called the obsidian prison The Village. Mostly built underground, only a few were ever allowed to even see the sky. She had learned her existence proved to be unnatural from the others, two centuries passed and 3 generations of heretics had come and gone, death taking the toll of them, the generations marked by those dieing from old age alone. It didn’t take her long to learn to speak, hearing the guards and copying them, but she was isolated from all the others for over 70 years before they let her out of that cell, she was the prized jewel of all the captured. barely looking a day over twelve after a hundred years and only now being questioned if trustworthy.
The others that accepted their fate and did not die over an attempt to escape had grouped together forming a community-like family inside the nightmare prison welcoming the faun with open arms, all knowing about her existence already by word of the guards, they had over time come to call her Keiko. She was surprised and flattered, so happy with the feeling of belong but that too was a swift end in itself as they too died and were replaced by those who wished to use her to grant their freedom. They were the only ones to have ever escaped, them alone though. The little faun, not as little anymore was left behind, she looked in her early twenties now as she sat shackled waiting for execution, not sad in the least that she was traded in for freedom, to her she saw it as she herself set those men free, she will die for it, but there never was anything else for the jewel of The Village.
For months they tortured her, leather engraved her back, and the unknown chemicals they used to knock her out for transport had rendered her blind. She did not resist once, no longer conscious of time passed she had developed new found hearing abilities, she could feel throughout the whole facility with vibrations which became her new eyes. But she waited, and listened, and heard… heard the guards outside, speaking of the people who got away, about how they didn’t get away. They didn’t… get… away.
Without a moment to count her eyes turned red, blood red with the hue of lava, her hands became shadowed talons, her teeth sharp and her hair white, white as the snow. With a simple movement she stood up without any effort, her binds appears to have simply fallen off as she walked up to the guard that had the honor to watch her all day, and gave him the blessing to die first, and another and another, continuing for three weeks until The Village was nothing but a frozen slick of red, she was blinded by rage, no filter for her crimes, guards and prisoners alike, now lifeless and barely bodies to recognized scattered everywhere. Her talons raked along the obsidian stone as she traveled to the lowest bowels of the facility where the obsidian was still warm, the ice had melted into a lake where there was no end to be seen, she looked at her reflection, seeing herself for the first time, covered in red. She allowed herself to fall in the red clouding off of her body and slowly began to clear as she returned to herself, motionless she drifted in the warm water only to snap back to reality when her eyes met a shadow drifting across the water, a man?
She peered just barely above the water line to meet him as he held out his hand down towards her
“Take my hand and I will lead you across, your life will be anew, but you will not be able to come back, not without cost. All of your memories of life in a place you’ve never been. Choose now or never again, and it will be as you see it.”

At the very moment, I took his hand without hesitation, no
thought of what I had done, of what I was doing. The instant
my hand grasped his he began to laugh. The very first time
I have ever heard a person laugh.

For background on a continuing series of posts about whales, the story of Keiko is illuminating.

Keiko–which means “Lucky One” in Japanese–was a male orca who was captured off the coast of Iceland in 1979 at the age of one or two and sold into the marine park industry. After spending three years at an aquarium in Iceland, he was bought by Marineland in Ontario, Canada where he performed before the public. In Canada Keiko began to develop skin lesions indicative of poor health. He was then sold to Reino Aventura, an amusement park in Mexico City where he performed again, spending a decade alone in a tiny tank designed for bottlenose dolphins filled with heavily chlorinated tap water. He was so long and the pool was so shallow, that when he was simply floating his tail nearly touched the bottom.

Reino Aventura

In 1992 Hollywood filmed him in Mexico as the star of the movie “Free Willy” about a boy who rescues a killer whale from a rundown marine park sideshow.

Media reports surfaced after the film’s release revealing the state of Keiko’s living conditions at the Mexican park and the fact that he had chronic health problems. Public outrage was extreme. Stung by the bad publicity, the film’s producer, Warner Brothers, approached Earth Island Institute looking for a way out of the dilemma. With a $4 million contribution from Warner Brothers, and agreement from Reino Aventura to release the animal into their care, Earth Island founded the Free Willy-Keiko Foundation to rehabilitate Keiko with the hope of possibly releasing him back into the wild.

School kids around the world held fundraising events for the Keiko Foundation. The fund got more promotion as the film Free Willy 2 was released in 1995. Free Willy 3 was released in 1997.

An aquarium in Newport, Oregon agreed to take him in on the condition that he would not have to perform, and built a pool for him at a cost of more than $7 million.

Keiko took up residence at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in 1996. By the end of his first year there he gained more than 1,000 pounds. By 1997 he was lesion free, weighed upward of six-tons and measured 35 feet long.

He was also starting to eat live fish in preparation for release into the wild.

In September 1998 he was flown to the site of his capture 19 years before: Klettsvik Bay in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland where an ocean pen had been built for him.

His rehabilitation was put in the hands of an international team of experts. Returning a captive whale to the ocean had never been done before, so his keepers just did what Keiko seemed to want to do.

Photo: Sam Lobo.

He was fed herring, taken for supervised swims in the open ocean and looked after 24/7. The annual bill for his upkeep was in excess of half a million dollars.

Keiko and his longtime keeper Stephen Claussen in Iceland (Photo:stephenclaussenmemorial.com)

In the summer of 2000 he was gradually reintroduced into the wild northern ocean. For a while it looked as if the relocation effort was succeeding. Fish were provided for him but he appeared to be catching a few wild fish on his own.

Keiko was released from his pen in July 2002. Two months later he followed a boat into the harbor of the village of Halsa on the shores of western Norway, 870 miles away. He was quickly identified and became a huge celebrity. He allowed fans to pet and play with him, even crawl on his back. He became such an attraction that the authorities imposed a ban on approaching him.

He soon stopped feeding himself, and it became obvious he would again need human care.

Keiko in Iceland (Photo: Orcalover555)

Desperate to wean him from people and begging for handouts, with help from the Norwegian government he was shifted to Taknes Bay, a more obscure fjord; a clear, calm pocket of coastal water deep enough that it doesn’t freeze in winter. Keepers fed him, but he was free to roam and did, often at night. He was equipped with a tracking device that let his four handlers pinpoint his location provided he stayed within a range of about five miles. His keepers reported that the whale seemed to be adapting to living in the wild, evidencing behaviors common to wild orcas.

They took him on “walks,” leading him around the fjords from a small boat at least three times a week.

In 1993 he showed signs of lethargy and was given antibiotics. He died quickly, beaching himself up against a pier, seeking human consolation. He was somewhere between 25 and 27 years old, an age not unusual for male orcas, whose average longevity is thought to be around 30 years. Pneumonia was later determined as his probable cause of death.

Thorbjorg (Tobba) Valdis Kristjansdottir, a keeper who spent two years working with Keiko in Iceland, calls him “an unbelievable animal. He absolutely had a definite personality. I spent a lot of time alone with him, and I talked and talked and talked to him. He would just kind of dance in the water.”

Andrew and I met at approximate 9:27PM to start exploring the QIIME online interface and get a bette

Andrew and I met at approximate 9:27PM to start exploring the QIIME online interface and get a better feel of the data that is generated by QIIME (http://www.microbio.me/qiime/). We were able to download a .jnlp file after doing a test meta analysis and this file contains an OTU table.

Using the tutorial here (http://www.microbio.me/qiime/docs/tutorials/tutorial.html), I was able to figure out how to upload metadata. It entails choosing different MIMARKS compliant fields then generating a template. This is downloaded as a zip and has three files: field reference (information about the different fields and what you can actually input. ex Y/N or [text]), prep_template, and sample_template.

The prep_template and sample_template must be saved in the .TXT (tab delimited) format. In order to upload onto QIIME web-based interface, the two files must have the two files.

After doing a test meta analysis, I downloaded the zip archive and cut/paste the information from meta_analysis_tmpyoeE07rp6FgSBwGn4VnM_map.txt file into Excel. I later cut and paste appropriate information from this file into the prep_template and sample_template generated earlier. I data such as BASE %BF AVE (from the meta data file we have) into the sample_template. Fields (column names) must have only a-z characters and numbers (NO SPACES).

The upload of a zip of these two files was completed with a few fixable message errors (changing the field names so that they were lower case or removed spaces from the field names). Another upload of the zip went through. However the sample names I took from the metadata do not seem to match whatever is already on the website. After successful upload, QIIME asks me if I want to overwrite the current file because the names differ.

Questions to ask in tomorrow’s lab meeting:

What sample names should we be using?

Where are the meta data after baseline measurements?

Allow me to paint a picture…

Begin with an ever-tightening wide shot of the front of your average Bujinkan school, settling to an establishing shot of the sign. Adorned with various script in that mystical language that sparked our imaginations in time gone by. Cross dissolve as we pass through the sign, through the wall, and enter the school. No trophies occupy it’s walls, there is no gift shop. The walls would be bare if not for racks on each that hold the wooden library that allows us to peer into the history of our art.

Students perform various jutaijutsu kata in an attempt to capture the spirit of the source hanging palpable in the air. The source is here, though the mouth of it’s fountain lies in Chiba. Uke enters and grasps for control, tori drifts rearward imperceptibly forcing uke to reach 2 inches farther than he intended for the control that his fear pleads with him to retrieve. The trap is set, the bait taken. Tori can feel that this is the moment to capitalize, he pauses to contemplate the next technique…. his prey escapes. The once palpable sense of connection to the Bujin dissipates, replaced with strong frustration, self loathing, and desire to recapture. Training is ruined for now. One cannot connect with the lessons while possessing a sickness of heart, coupled with the desire for impressive performance.

It is this desire to perform<del> impressively</del> No, it is the value placed on impressive performance, on victory, that causes you to fail. Causes you to evaluate the moment. The moment is not there for you to evaluate. It is there to be reflected upon. I believe it has to be thought of as having already happened.

This is why your teacher tells you to move slowly. When you begin with any technique, if you move slowly and smoothly throughout to completion, this habit of stopping with be nullified. Moving literally in bullet time gives you the time needed in the early stages to contemplate how the pieces will fit together. As long as you make a point of moving continually through to completion, you will, I believe, cure your stop-motion taijutsu.

I am not an instructor, I don’t teach martial arts. As always ask your instructor before taking the advice of random douche-bags on the internet. If you’re an instructor and you take issue with specific points above, I’d love to hear your thoughts. I won’t take offense and I can only improve as a result. Though I might take a shot or two at you for shits and giggles… This is the internet after all…

http://qiime.org/tutorials/tutorial.html

This tutorial explains how to use the QIIME (Quantitative Insights Into Microbial Ecology) Pipeline to process data from high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing studies. If you have not already installed qiime, please see the section Installing Qiime first. The purpose of this pipeline is to provide a start-to-finish workflow, beginning with multiplexed sequence reads and finishing with taxonomic and phylogenetic profiles and comparisons of the samples in the study. With this information in hand, it is possible to determine biological and environmental factors that alter microbial community ecology in your experiment.

Here is a short/free article about advantages of QIIME.

Although Keiko Matsui is an internationally acclaimed musician whose career spans three decades, believe it or not she has never performed in Brevard county… until now! I am excited to welcome her to Melbourne on October 14, 2012 and hope many of you will join me!

Thrilled to experience her introspective compilations LIVE! She has a unique spiritual view of composing music and has said music is “the great gift from the human souls from the past, for the children of the future.” She is not afraid of fusing world music – combining jazz, Latin and funk music to make a sound all her own and that people across the globe have come to love! With over a million and a half albums sold and scores of sold out concerts around the world, Keiko Matsui is one of the brightest stars in instrumental music.

Hoping you will join me as she shines on at the Henegar Center in Melbourne on October 14, 2012. Tickets are still available at BrevardMusicGroup.com. Hope to see you there for a night you won’t forget!
