The countdown ends tomorrow with the shocking loss of two main characters.

It is a complicated year for many reasons. It’s not only the arduous task of classroom management in a notoriously difficult school, not only because we are in the midst of a teacher inquisition, but most importantly because of the obstinacy to education, not just in my students but in policy makers as well.

I’m not fond of teaching religion but I have to. Today, in the middle of a jeopardy game I stopped for that teachable moment to explain that Jesus was a Jew. Obviously I did this for a reason. But I was stunned with the determination of my students to refute this.

After accessing their previous knowledge and referencing the text, we concluded the debate in short order. I guess I should be proud of what I accomplished. But it won’t show up on any standardized test, which to be honest makes my job harder. The students openly talk about what is and what is not on our state standardized tests. They finally concluded correctly that Social Studies is not. So to them Social Studies and American history are not important. The values of a nation have been lost as the mission of educations transfers from producing citizens to producing employees.

I cannot be proud of what my generation has committed itself to.

My father and father-in-law won a world war, ended separate but equal, saw that women gained equal rights, and questioned national authority when their sons were sent off to fight another war, one they did not believe in.

My students asked me what I am most thankful for. I never answered. But I’m going up to bed now and give her a hug. Tomorrow I’ll dine with my father in law and best friend, and I am thankful for that. But when his generation is gone, I do not believe mine is fit to carry on.

Oh gosh I miss having Keith in my life.

Just an FYI, Edgar had personal matters to tend to and Keith Wick placed a bit lower in the overall cuz, although he busted some major Muska stuff, he didn’t land some of them =(

JLo falls onstage...then pops up and keeps it moving

Last night,Dick Clark and ABC television hosted the annual American Music Awards, where all kind of crazy and cool happenings went on,and Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert still stood out.

I like it how every year some new act feels the need to shock and push the limits of the public morals to the breaking point, and this year the winner for that category is Adam Lambert.

Adam,the runner-up for last seasons American Idol competition,decided to out do Katy Perry who kissed a girl, or at least had a hit record about it, by kissing a guy on stage.

And, as if that was not enough to get his point across, he then grabbed a male dancer, and had him kiss,…or do something like that, to his crotch. Many guys have done this on stage before,except with women.

I think the best one was that awards show on Spike TV hosted by Jamie Foxx,when he grabbed Halle Berry’s nice behind and laid a good kiss on her…remember that.

…Oh yeah…as usual,like clockwork…Lady Gaga got down!…she is the most interesting performer out there currently, and whenever she performs…I simply can not take my eyes off of her,because of her performances.

She has way more concept than the rest of her fellow performers,and I can tell she is having a big influence on others stage shows. Good going Gaga….

LONDON (Nov. 21) — Computer hackers have broken into a server at a well-respected climate change research center in Britain and posted hundreds of private e-mails and documents online — stoking debate over whether some scientists have overstated the case for man-made climate change.

The University of East Anglia, in eastern England, said in a statement Saturday that the hackers had entered the server and stolen data at its Climatic Research Unit, a leading global research center on climate change. The university said police are investigating the theft of the information, but could not confirm if all the materials posted online are genuine.

More than a decade of correspondence between leading British and U.S. scientists is included in about 1,000 e-mails and 3,000 documents posted on Web sites following the security breach last week.

Some climate change skeptics and bloggers claim the information shows scientists have overstated the case for global warming, and allege the documents contain proof that some researchers conspired to manipulate data.

The furor over the leaked data comes weeks before the U.N. climate conference in Copenhagen, when 192 nations will seek to reach a binding treaty to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases worldwide. Many officials — including U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon — regard the prospects of a pact being sealed at the meeting as bleak.

Within a decade, summers in the North Pole will be dramatically different: no ice and just an open sea. That is the prediction released Oct. 14 by explorers who have hiked through the area. Here, research vessels on an unrelated expedition break through ice near the North Pole in 2004.

A new report examines the human cost of climate change, which it said causes more than 300,000 deaths per year. The report, released in May, shows the impact of climate change on population displacement, malnutrition and diseases, such as malaria. “Climate change is not something waiting to happen,” said former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

In one leaked e-mail, the research center’s director, Phil Jones, writes to colleagues about graphs showing climate statistics over the last millennium. He alludes to a technique used by a fellow scientist to “hide the decline” in recent global temperatures. Some evidence appears to show a halt in a rise of global temperatures from about 1960, but is contradicted by other evidence which appears to show a rise in temperatures is continuing.

Jones wrote that, in compiling new data, he had “just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i.e., from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline,” according to a leaked e-mail, which the author confirmed was genuine.

One of the colleague referred to by Jones — Michael Mann, a professor of meteorology at Pennsylvania State University — did not immediately respond to requests for comment via telephone and e-mail.

The use of the word “trick” by Jones has been seized on by skeptics — who say his e-mail offers proof of collusion between scientists to distort evidence to support their assertion that human activity is influencing climate change.

“Words fail me,” Stephen McIntyre — a blogger whose climateaudit.org Web site challenges popular thinking on climate change — wrote on the site following the leak of the messages.

However, Jones denied manipulating evidence and insisted his comment had been taken out of context. “The word ‘trick’ was used here colloquially, as in a clever thing to do. It is ludicrous to suggest that it refers to anything untoward,” he said in a statement Saturday.

Jones did not indicate who “Keith” was in his e-mail.

Two other American scientists named in leaked e-mails — Gavin Schmidt of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, and Kevin Trenberth, of the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research, in Colorado — did not immediately return requests for comment.

The University of East Anglica said that information published on the Internet had been selected deliberately to undermine “the strong consensus that human activity is affecting the world’s climate in ways that are potentially dangerous.”

“The selective publication of some stolen e-mails and other papers taken out of context is mischievous and cannot be considered a genuine attempt to engage with this issue in a responsible way,” the university said in a statement.

Des jeunes qui arrivent à maturité (Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane…), une attaque explosive, juste assez de robustesse, une défense solide et équilibrée (Brian Campbell, Brent Sopel, Duncan Keith…), l’ajout de Hossa et d’un joueur d’expérience en John Madden, tous les éléments ici sont.

Tous ? Non… il y a une position qui semblait avoir été oubliée. En effet, avec le départ de Khabibulin vers d’autres cieux, c’était à Cristobal Huet qu’on donnait la tâche la plus importante de l’équipe. Évidemment, cela a fait douter les experts et les fans : Huet, malgré ses performances impressionnantes à Montréal, avait été chancelant à sa première année dans l’Illinois et n’avait joué que 41 parties. De plus, il n’avait rien prouvé lors de ses trois présences en séries éliminatoires. En fait, “Bulin” lui avait volé le poste lors des séries de 2009.

Et voilà que le début de saison de Huet est venu confondre même ceux qui croyaient le plus en lui. Il n’a eu qu’une seule victoire à ses quatre premiers départs, incluant une performance affreuse durant laquelle il a accordé 3 buts sur… 5 tirs avant d’être sorti du match. Antti Niemi, son suppléant, qui l’a remplacé dans ce match-là, a réussi à l’emporter dans une remontée spectaculaire de 5 buts de son équipe. Huet perdait des points, le jeune Niemi en gagnait.

Mais Joel Quenneville, le coach, n’est pas idiot, et il sait que son Français a du talent. Il lui a mis un peu de pression en donnant des matchs à la recrue Niemi, avant de re-tester Huet. Et ça a eu l’effet escompté : après avoir été “plus ou moins” bon, avec quatre victoires en sept matchs, il s’est repris et est sur une séquence de quatre victoires et de huit gains en onze possibilités.

Évidemment, on pourra toujours dire que sa défense ne l’abandonne pas et limite les tirs adverses ; en effet, Huet n’a pas reçu plus de 29 tirs en un match à date, ce qui est assez impressionnant ! Ce à quoi je vous dirai qu’il maintient quand même une moyenne en haut de ,900, qu’il est solide au bon moment (en prolongation et en tirs de barrage, entre autres) et qu’il s’est bien implanté et semble apprécié des joueurs.

Avec tout ça, qui peut arrêter les Hawks maintenant, eux qui dominent la section Centrale et ce, sans avoir compté sur les services de Hossa pour un seul match, lui qui est blessé depuis le début de la saison ? Difficile à dire. Une saison, c’est long, mais pour moi, les Blackhawks sont d’ores et déjà de sérieux prétendants à la victoire finale.

Three years ago my husband and I packed up our new family of four and moved clear across the country. I was moving home. You might already know that my husband is from Zimbabwe and my kids were both born in Calgary. Me? I was born in Newfoundland. Coming home was pretty exciting. What I wasn’t prepared for was that all my old friends had moved away so returning home meant living in the city where I knew nobody. That also meant three year olds, I didn’t know any three year olds. So being the responsible mother I knew one day I had to become I decided to put my baby in pre-school. He needed friends, he needed to socialize and grow and learn to love his new home too.

That’s where Liam met Liam. For two years they played together at school and grew some kind of pre-school bond that I did not know was possible. Liam and Liam were separated this past September as they started kindergarten in different schools. My Liam is not jaded, he states just about every other day that “Liam is still his best friend’.

And that’s how I met this family. Whenever I move to a new city I’m reminded how much heartbreak, unrest and loneliness can follow you. With a little hard work it doesn’t long to be reminded that the best part about moving is new friends; new people are waiting in each place to be a part of your new life.

This past weekend I spent a beautiful mild Saturday morning with Liam’s best friends family.

They love to take their kids to the Fort Amherst area.  We shot at 9:30am to catch a softer morning light. And I say it again, “I must have the best job!”

This is the other Liam.

And this is his ‘little’ brother! He stops for nobody or nothing and yet makes a great subject for my camera!

How do I shoot into the sun successfully? A lot of you have been noticing that I shoot into the sun a lot.  Most of the these images were indeed taken that way.  The first thing you have to do is start shooting in manual.  Surprisingly a lot of point and shoots can shoot manual but it’s not always easy to access those settings.  In order to succeed at getting what you want from your camera YOU have to be in control. So, my first piece of advice is start shooting in manual mode. You’re camera manual is a great place to start if you have no idea what ‘manual’ even means.  When you’re comfortable with that I’ll tell you what to do next.

And so that mom and dad don’t get a bad rep I had to share this one where they are happily smiling for me and the kids are doing what kids do best!

This is a same day edit from Amanda & Keith’s beautiful wedding day at the Belles of Montgomery. Thanks to Alex White for additional camerawork and editing assistance. Also thanks to Mary at The Caroline House featured at the beginning, she’s such a sweetheart and was very hospitable.

I embarked on my first (albeit, brief and very rough) collaborative drawing.  I decided it was best to enact it in a social setting with someone, so I invited my friend Taylor Ashbrook.  We went to a bar near Hynes in Boston, and found several people who were willing to draw with us.   In fact, I only completed one of the drawings below.  It was great fun to see people enjoying themselves while studying and talking with other people, making drawing more like a social event than a solo sojourn in a studio.   A guy named Keith said to me, “I really liked this project, thanks for letting me draw.”  PoS became exciting last night!

Next time, I will be sure to video tape this event.

Ignorance really, really is bliss. It’s possible to go through your entire life blissfully unaware of what’s going around you on a personal level and be completely happy. Granted, this isn’t always the case. I’d rather not be ignorant about things like global warming and animal testing. Big pictures, they should be taken seriously. But I’ve found out that petty stuff like friendships or people being rude to you is something that you can just ignore and be a little more happier.

But surely it’s possible to cross the line somewhere.

Dustin Kessler is a 17-year old German boy suffering from cardiac insufficiency, a rare heart disease. His heart pumps blood at a rate inadequate to fill tissue metabolic requirements. Two years ago, Dustin had his first heart attack, and subsequently, the attacks became more frequent, and his condition became worst. Thankfully, earlier this year, the doctors managed to find a suitable heart donor and through a 60-hour surgery, they successfully engrafted the heart of a 23-year old in Dustin.

The surgery cured Dustin from cardiac insufficiency, but his new heart was too weak for his body. It pumps only 10 times per minute, a rate so slow the blood in his veins started to dry up. This would cause the arteries and blood vessels in his body to clog up, making it more difficult for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body.

Through countless surgeries, a 2-week coma, a pacemaker and medical pumps, Dustin’s life expectancy is down to 1-2 weeks now. He’s feeling the strain, and he’s giving up hope.

If I were ignorant about Dustin, I definitely won’t be too cooped up worrying about his condition. But if I wasn’t, I don’t think I’d be more… mature?

I dunno, this opened up new doors for me. How could people be so happy about mediocre things such as shopping sprees and manicures while the other half of the world is dying?!?!

Life sucks.

On the bright side, Jason, Jonathan, Shu Qi and Keith have all arrived safely in their respective destinations. I’ve talked to Jason, Jon and Keith, and they all seem to be okay and more or less contented. Thank God.

I really really really miss my friends. Ivan made me smile today, I’m going to message him tomorrow to thank him. The stupid boy is offline already, he has school tomorrow morning (hahaha). GUYS WHERE ARE YOU? SAVE ME FROM THIS LONELINESS! LET’S GO OUTTTTTTTT!

X's and O's

Last week we got off to a slow start – we were down by 11 early. After a timeout, we emphasized making a commitment on the defensive end and really stymied our opponents. But not before Keith and O got exposed (just a little). I may have been the first player in league history to nearly post a triple-double without scoring a single point. Big Game James was a set-up man this week after exploding for some crafty buckets in the previous game. Everyone else scored in double-figures with Chip (24 points) leading the way. We did a solid job at the charity stripe, which was different for us as we almost lost our first game due to Shaq-Fu from the line. The story of the game was how we really buckled down on defense, forcing a shot-clock violation and several consecutive turnovers that really made the difference in the outcome. The game was hardly uneventful in terms of highlights. O got crossed something disgusting in the final minutes. After the game O commented, “I didn’t wanna foul him, so I just let him go by.” Uhhh, that’s not what it looked like from my angle bruh. Keith swatted a couple of shots around after giving up a few lay-ups. Martin put on his hard hat (no pause) and toolbelt and went to work in the paint… Again. Ro had a smooth 14 with short jumpers and drives to the cup. Chip hit a mean step-back J right in the face of the defense. Oh and Chip hit somebody with one of the most devastating ball fakes I’ve ever seen. While keeping his dribble he fooled his defender into thinking he was shooting. HIs man held turbo while he pressed Y for the swat. I think he was still in the air by the time Chip finished the lay-up. I shot a mean free-throw… from the 3-point line. All in all, it was a great win.

Why are you watching your man score Keith?

We play tomorrow at 5pm. Please be on time. The other team is talkin’ trash so we have to make a statement with this one. They’re disappointed that we’re accepting a forfeit while playing them instead of giving them a chance to win with subs (non-registered players). Let’s push our streak to five games fellas!
