Kellie Pickler

Kellie Pickler will embark on her third USO tour to visit our troops overseas after Christmas, although she’s not exactly sure where she’ll be going.  Kellie says, “Honestly, we never find out where we’re going to be going until we get on the plane and they hand us our tour book, and that’ll tell us where we’re gonna be.”  Last year she visited Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Germany and England with the Zac Brown Band and Kid Rock.  This year she will be traveling with Jamey Johnson and Randy Houser and she says, “I’m very sure I’ll have some very interesting stories to share when I get back. I’m sure there will never be a dull moment.”

Where on earth do I begin? This all started as me, a young 17 year old American going to see a woman I admire and turned into this crazy event hah I’ll start at the very beginning.

My dad and I arrived at the Barnes and Noble at 11 pmTuesday evening. There were 2 tents in front of us; we were probably number 15 or so in line. It was a chilly evening but I enjoyed some good conversation from several Palin fans. We talked about Obama, Palin and just some other stuff. We sat outside in the cold, bundled up until 5:30 am. At that time they ushered us inside where we had to sit outside the B&N entrance until 7am. We received our bracelets at 7am and were told if we’d like to be guaranteed to see Palin we should remain in line all day. So I did.  I was not about to lose a chance at seeing Sarah Palin after sitting in line out in the freezing cold for hours. So I sat, and sat… I read some of her book and then the media circus began. I spotted Norah O’Donnell and Andrea Mitchell right off the bat and couldn’t believe they were there.. I mean I thought they hated Sarah Palin. I thought Sarah Palin had no impact, she was a nobody yet they send their 2 big guns to cover her book tour..but I digress.

There were 3 young girls-college aged who arrived first and they got tons and tons of interviews. After the media covered them they started walking the rope line. One by one I saw them interview people left and right of me. The day went on and then we were given the warning- 1 hour til she arrives! We were told the only thing we could bring in was our book. If we had coats they had to remain on. So I figured it was going to get hot in there with all us people crammed so I took it off…who knew that move would land me all the media buzz it did. I knew they went after people who were all decked out but I did not think my t-shirt would get much attention. I was first approached by a New York Times writer who wrote what my shirt said and then asked me a couple questions. She asked me what it was I liked about Sarah Palin. I said, “As a young female she is someone I can look up to, before her the only prominent female in politics I had known about was Hilary Clinton, whom I respect don’t get me wrong, I respect her but when you don’t agree with someone it’s hard to really look up to them. I like how Sarah Palin will speak her mind, regardless of what the media will say about it.” After that I just stood in line eagerly waiting for Sarah Palin to arrive. I then see Norah O’Donnell approach a man all decked out in Palin garb. She asked him a few questions (camera not rolling) then said she’d like to have a woman in the shot. She asked a woman who refused then pointed at me and said “Hey talk to her” So I walked over. I knew I was walking into hot water with MSNBC- thought I was prepared….Seconds later I met her… One of the many faces of liberal media bias. She asked me my name and then before going on air asked me why I liked Sarah Palin, I repeated what I told the NYT reporter. Norah didn’t seem to like that much. So what did she do? I mean she couldn’t ask me that question on television, heaven forbid her not have a biting response.. I noticed her look down at my shirt then, she turned around blackberry in hand spoke to a man, thumbs tapping the blackberry (I don’t remember if she called or not, she may have. But she was on her blackberry), then jotted down a quick note. Little did I know that note would be used against me. She told us she’d be walking up to us. You know like she just stumbled upon us. The shot began… I kept telling myself answer her question well, don’t freak out. Well, I thought she’d ask me the same question. She asked the man beside me (who by the way is NOT my dad) the same question she had before we went on air. Myself on the other hand, not the same story. She had me read my shirt and then proceeded to ask me “Did you know Sarah Palin supported the bailout” to be 100% honest I was like, are you kidding me? She is trying to use my shirt against me. I was so shocked by the craftiness she had that I was truly stumped. I asked her where she got her fact and she read her little note. Then she asked me what I liked about Sarah, and I talked about the Constitution. Immediately after the interview I said to my dad “Oh man, I have so many great responses now about my shirt” I could have said, well my shirt doesn’t say anything about Sarah Palin supporting the bailout or “Hey Norah, have you read the book? She talks about how during her debate prep she was handed a list of note cards that had questions and ‘non-answers’” Of course they told Sarah Palin to support everything McCain did. Call me crazy but it would have looked pretty bad had Sarah Palin been against something John McCain was against while they were running together. Norah also claims I told her I voted (on her twitter). That is not true. She never asked my age or if I voted. I’m 17 I couldn’t have voted…and I don’t live in an ACORN district so I didn’t have a chance to even register illegally. Making that statement by Norah completely false.

Well, the interview was over and it was time for me to meet Sarah Palin. We were taken upstairs and stood for about a half hour. And all of a sudden, the music began playing. “Red High Heels” by Kellie Pickler started blasting; I thought it was a perfect song. Then off in the distance I saw Sarah Palin make her way to the table. Before I knew it there she was. My dad went ahead of me and Sarah welcomed him by saying “Well, hey there sir how are you doing” and being the goofball he is said to her “I’ve haven’t been this excited since I visited Graceland.” Sarah responded “Oh thank you so much!” He also told her that the girl behind him was his daughter and that I had just been interviewed by MSNBC and would’ve made her proud. Sarah smiled and said “aww well good we need that!” I was up, it all happened so fast I didn’t have much time to take it in. But to my surprise she added my name when she signed my book. I’m going to back track for a second, when we arrived we were handed a pink slip with rules for the event and one read “There will be NO personalizing of books.” That is why I was so shocked. She looked at me and said “Sweetie, what is your name?” I told her and watched her sign my name in the book and then hers. I told her “Thank you so much.” and she said “No, thank YOU so much!” She was so kind and personal. She looked me directly in the eyes and looked so happy to see everyone. And just like that it was over. I had met the woman who had inspired me to become interested in politics and is one of the huge factors in my interest for learning about our countries great history. Meeting Sarah has been the highlight of my senior year so far, that is for sure!

So today. I thought about my interview and thought there was a slight chance someone; somewhere would pick up on it. Never did I think I would be featured on Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, Hot Air, Associated Content, Media Matters, Newsbusters and the Fox Nation. I found out about Glenn Beck because during school I have my twitter updates turned on on my phone and I check them in between classes. After 3rd hour I looked at my phone and click on a tweet and it said that Glenn was airing my interview. After school, I went to work; I left my twitter updates on just to see what else might happen. I got tweets about Newsbusters and MediaMatters while at work. When I got home I began looking online and kept receiving tweets and the more they came the more surprised I became. Then as I’m sitting at the computer I get a TweetDeck notification alerting me of an @ mention, I clicked it and I read “HOLY CRAP YOU’RE ON O’REILLY” luckily I had it recording because I knew Sarah Palin would be on, but really I was stunned O’Reilly showed it. I’ve been sitting at the computer now for a couple of hours now reading articles and comments and I even got to see video from Glenn Beck’s radio show of them discussing it, which made me laugh hysterically. It was not the first time I’d been mistaken for being much younger than I actually am (still get offered a kids menu).  It was nice to see/hear someone like Glenn Beck defending me. I will clear up some of the stuff he said about me. I am 17, the man next to me was not my father and I cannot stand Miley Cyrus. He was right, however, in 2 areas. I do attend a private school (parochial-Christian school) and my dad is a Bible thumping, gun toting man. I wish I could have thought quicker on my feet for that interview and threw it right back into O’Donnell’s face but I was caught off guard I had no time to think clearly, you can also add in nerves of being on live television for the first time. That certainly did not help.  

In one day I met a role model, and met the liberal media and their crafty schemes. I fell prey to liberal bias, but I’d like to think I did an okay job. We always want do-overs, and I can assure you if I had a do-over with Miss O’Donnell you’d see a much more prepared (well rested) and ready to go at it side of this 17 year old. But unlike Norah I didnt have my note cards with me. I was forced to think on the spot and answer a gotcha question. Her goal was clear, make this teenager look like an uneducated Palin supporting buffoon. To liberals, and the 5 people who watch MSNBC she succeeded. To conservatives, she was the only buffoon during that interview.

Kellie Pickler got people talking when she decided to dye her blonde hair red, but what you may or may not have noticed is that Miranda Lambert decided to dip her toe into the red hair pool.  If you look at pictures of her from the CMA Awards you may be able to see that Miranda has some chunks of red mixed in with her blonde hair.  Apparently she and Kellie had talked about going red together, but Miranda told The Tennessean, “My hair and make-up people keep trying to talk me out of going red all over.  I think they were afraid of that ‘ahhhhh’ moment when they took the towel off. I think I have a redheaded personality.”  So she’s sticking with red pieces … for now.

National media has been buzzzzzing about the CMA Awards.  Good Morning America, LIVE with Regis and Kelly, along with others have featured musical guests and live performances to feature the nominees of the show.  Even the online radio station, www.pandora.com had advertising spots pushing the show.  You have seen the likes of Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Kellie Pickler, Brad Paisley, and Tim McGraw just to name a few grace the air waves pushing their agenda and giving good press for the CMA Awards.

A few names you will not see in the general press are the nominees for Musician of the Year. These individuals have dedicated their lives to country music and they will be in small print at the bottom of press releases and breezed by on the red carpet. This town is about hard work and sacrifice.  These people leave their families and friends and travel on the road right along the side of the artists but you can’t see them cause they are standing in the shadows of the spotlight.

In honor of the years of dedication and tremendous talent – here is a little snippet about each nominee for Musician of the Year. (All the info below was taken directly from online sources – bios, personal web pages, and wikipedia)

Eddie Bayers – DRUMS

Eddie Bayers was born in Pautaxant River Maryland, being the son of a Naval Fighter Pilot, he grew up in various parts of the US, and spent 4 years of his life in North Africa.

Trained as a classical pianist, it was during his college years in California that his musical interests took a turn. “I loved playing the music … but I was in an interpretive mode. In the collegiate years you are subject to interpreting the music exactly the way the professors think you should.” Certainly not to go against that, to Eddie, it was more fun feeling it the way he wanted to feel it. Not to demean the original composer, but he was starting to see there was a creative part of music.”

Establishing himself in Nashville as one of the top studio drummers, Eddie has since worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Vince Gill, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Steve Winwood, Peter Frampton, Bob Seger, Trisha Yearwood, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Uncle Cracker……well the list goes on and on. Playing on hundreds of gold and platinum albums and numerous movie soundtracks, He received the Academy of Country Music Drummer of the Year Award for 11 straight years, something that no artist or musician as yet accomplished within the academy’s history, and has recently won his 12th award for 2004. He won the “Top Ten” award in Music Row Mag, which is given to musicians who play on the most top ten albums country in Billboard Mag. so many times, that he still has played drums on the most top ten albums in country for the past 12 years. He was put into the Honor Roll for Modern Drummer Magazine for winning the readers poll 5 years consecutive.  more info

Paul Franklin – STEEL GUITAR

Paul Franklin moved from Detroit to Nashville in 1972 to play the pedal steel guitar with Barbara Mandrell.  Later in the 70’s, he recorded and toured with Jerry Reed and Mel Tillis.  In 1981, Paul decided to quit the road and focus strictly on session work in Nashville.  Since then, he has been well received throughout the recording industry.  You can listen to his playing behind such legendary artists as Sting, Mark Knopfler, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Shania Twain, Barbara Streisand and Megadeth for examples of Paul’s musicianship.  His ability to create music outside of the country field has taken him well beyond the stereotype by which the pedal steel guitar has always been limited.  Paul’s soulful playing on this uniquely voiced instrument is clearly from the heart and makes him one of the busiest session musicians in Nashville.  more info

Dann Huff – GUITAR

Guitarist and singer Dann Huff was born in 1960 and was raised in a musically gifted family.  Dann favored the guitar. He took a few lessons; some even classical, but mostly played by ear. When he was 13, a session guitarist by the name of John Darnall spent some time teaching him a scale, and that kind of set the young Dann Huff on the career path he followed.

When Huff was only 16 years old, he began performing on demos in Nashville. By the time he hit 20, he helped form the Christian rock group Whiteheart.  Whiteheart completed three albums before Dann called it quits in 1985.  After leaving Whiteheart, maybe with a taste for something different, Dann and his brother David joined forces to create another band, Giant.  This one left Christian music behind to offer heavy metal, hard rock albums like Last of the Runaways and Time to Burn.

In the early ’90s, Dann went out on his own again, and went back to session work, something he excels at.  Over the years he has sat in on recorders for artists such as Barbra Streisand, Kenney Loggins, Reba McEntire, Celine Dion, DC Talk, Shania Twain, Michael Bolton, Luther Vandross, Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, and just about any other artists who have topped the charts in genres from country to rock to Christian and back again.  Dann Huff has also moved into the role of producing, working on albums with metal superstars like Megadeth.  more info

Brent Mason - GUITAR

Brent Mason is one of the most in-demand guitarists in Country Music.  Growing up in a musical family, Mason taught himself how to play guitar starting at age 5.  After graduating from high school in 1981, Mason moved to Nashville to pursue music full-time.  He landed a regular gig at the Stage Coach Lounge where one night Country Music Hall of Fame member Chet Atkins was in the audience.  Atkins invited Mason to play on his album, Stay Tuned, and news of Mason’s talent spread throughout Music City.

Mason has played on albums for Montgomery Gentry, Alan Jackson, The Mavericks, Trisha Yearwood and many more.  He’s also written numerous instrumental pieces for television and radio programs and performed guitar on tracks used in commercials.  Nominated 12 times for CMA Musician of the Year, Mason took home the trophy in 1997 and 1998.  Responding to requests to learn his techniques, Mason produced his own instruction video, “Brent Mason’s Nashville Chops & Western Swing Guitar.”  In 1997, Mason released an instrumental album, Hot Wired.  more info

Mac McAnally - GUITAR

The release of his new self-penned album Down By The River, his signing to a prominent Nashville label and a recent No. 1 single – as a writer and an artist – are all significant pieces of this unexpected new image.  Case in point, McAnally’s recent signing to Show Dog Nashville, the young but immensely successful independent label owned and operated by Toby Keith. When a man with Keith’s musical and business acumen puts his chips down, it means something. “There’s nobody more respected, at least when it comes to musicians and people who really know this business, than Mac McAnally,” Keith said of bringing McAnally to the company. “Getting to be a part of whatever Mac wants to do is an honor for me, and for everyone at the label.”

Next at the podium, Kenny Chesney. The man who had already recorded McAnally’s “Back Where I Come From” asked for a little help when he decided to cut Mac’s “Down The Road.” Powered by vocals from both artists, the song reached the No. 1 spot in the spring of 2009 and was nominated in the ACM Vocal Event category.

Music was the most obvious road for Lyman “Mac” McAnally to take from his Red Bay, Alabama birthplace and Belmont, Mississippi hometown.  He was a guitar and piano prodigy who performed in clubs at 13, wrote his first song at 15 and landed as a Muscle Shoals studio musician at 18.  Mac signed his first record deal, with Ariola, at 20 and launched two singles to moderate success on the Billboard Hot 100.  “It’s A Crazy World” peaked at No. 37 and “Minimum Love” topped out at No. 41.  more info

Dolly Parton held a press conference last night in Nashville to promote her new Live from London DVD and CD.  Before a screening of the DVD Dolly visited with friends who came out to support her including Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Wynonna and George Jones.  She also took questions and was as charming and funny as ever.  One reporter asked Dolly if the fans could expect to see anything new from her in this new DVD and she answered very honestly, “Oh, not a thing… It’s out, it’s Christmas… It makes a good present, and it wraps really nice! If you’ve ever seen me at all, it’s just some of what I do. It’s just me in London doin’ it!”

Kellie Pickler recently decided to dye her blonde hair red, and apparently some of her fans aren’t happy about that … and Kellie is not happy about that.  Kellie says some of her fans have responded negatively and she tells The Boot, “It’s just hair! Some people don’t even have hair.  So, while I have my hair, I’m going to play with it and experiment with it. When you get people that are just like, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re so much better as a blonde,’ it’s like where are your priorities?”  She says she’ll probably go back to being blonde sooner or later but for now she is happy being a redhead.

Kellie Pickler will be a guest Sunday night on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.  Kellie joined the team in Beavercreek, Ohio, to help build a home for James Terpenning, a wheelchair sports champion and mentor to disabled Iraqi War veterans.  Not only did Kellie perform at the reveal of the home, but she also worked side-by-side with the volunteers to help build the home.

In addition, hot emerging trio Love And Theft will host the Pre-Telecast Awards, which are given out during the half-hour before the televised event begins. Among the Awards presented during this time are the CMA Broadcast Awards, which recognize the Broadcast Personality and Station of the Year in four categories (small, medium, large, and major market) as well as the National Broadcast Personality of the Year.
