For God’s sake don’t ask me how, but Parasuram threw his axe in the wrong direction and that created Kerala and later blamed it on God saying ‘Its his country’ (Gods own country).  Kerala the land of coco(nuts) is famous for its landscapes, Backwaters, Beaches, Houseboats and Hill stations.  National Geographic traveler reads ‘ Kerala is more popular than Taj Mahal in tourist circuits’. But, today I shall highlight one more thing that Kerala is famous for.

If you happen to stroll on any road in any city of Kerala and you’ll see people standing in a queue, well this is it. You will see guys from all walks of life rich/poor/young/old/middle age waiting patiently. Obviously they are not here for ration (we do not need it). It is for a distilled drink that contains no added sugar and has at least 20% or above ABV. Technically we call it “Liquor”, simple.  We Keralites believe that literally for any occasion, liquor and more liquor is the best way to rejoice.

Thankfully these liquor outlets are located at all major points in the city making it easy for the drunkards to bump into the non-drinkers thereby tempting them to give in.  Driver’s nightmare, if you happen to drive this way, not because you have to continuously honk the boozers to move off the road, but for the temptation.

100% literate (come on we know to read and write alphabets), the intellectual Malayalee says there is no ill effects of drinking alcohol.

No Liquor no Kerala – this is one state in India, which is fully dependent on drunkards for survival.  Kerala holds the dubious record of consuming maximum liquor.  Ironically liquor is the second largest source of income -’A whopping 150 crore each year.

Strange are the ways of Kerala, like; the above Axe-effect, we have a King called Mahabali. No one know what his business is, but His Excellency is smart enough and prefers to stay underground. They say he comes out during Onam when the liquor sales goes up.

It’s a sad-STATE-of-affair, being a drunkard state, Kerala also has the the highest divorce and suicide rates. Finally, we are not laid-back people, see us in action if we are on a strike or on a protest or in front of liquor shop and you can see the adrenaline rush. God’s own Country, can’t complain.

Forest Minister Benoy Viswom has said that the State government will organise a function in Palakkad on November 15 and 16 to mark the 25 th anniversary of the Silent Valley movement that set the stage for the environmental activism in the State.

Inaugurating a function to commemorate the late environmental activist John C. Jacob here on Sunday, the Minister said that environmental activists in and outside the State would participate in the environmental seminar and the subsequent gathering to be held in Palakkad on November 15 and 16. Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest Jairam Ramesh would attend the function, Mr. Viswom announced.

Describing the Silent Valley agitation as a major social movement that had helped creation of environmental awareness in the State, he said that the movement had highlighted certain vital issues concerning the ecology that were relevant amid the global concern about global warming.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The toilet block of the women’s hostel building on the Karyavattom campus of the University of Kerala collapsed on Saturday afternoon, triggering panic.

A postgraduate student, Uma Maheswari from Munnar, was slightly injured. Her hostel mates believe that she was caught in the hustle when they rushed out on hearing a deafening noise at 2.30 p.m., suspecting an earthquake.

Only 32 students, mostly from Wayanad, Kannur, Kozhikode, were in the rooms. Many lives would have been lost if more of the 220 hostellers had stayed back without going home for the Puja holidays.

The students rushed out to the portico, looking for the source of the noise. Some of them, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the cleaning staff had cautioned them against using the bathrooms in the three-storey building, which is four decades old.

The staff had told them that the plastering on the roof and walls was coming off and the toilets were unsafe. The drainage pipe had been leaking for a while and the walls were damp.

The university authorities had allegedly ignored their repeated requests for maintenance of the hostel buildings, and only minor repairs, such as replacement of taps and electrical fittings, used to be done. When the occupants complained about the pitiable condition of rooms and toilets, the authorities assured them that the buildings would be spruced up before the science congress to be held on the campus in January. They had promised civil works estimated at Rs.10 crore by December.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel started removing the debris. They locked the rooms after removing the possessions of the students in the evening. The students said they were scared of occupying the rooms and the authorities should take steps to move them to safer rooms at the earliest.

പെരുന്നാള് ചടങ്ങുകള്ക്ക് വികാരി റഴ.ഫാ.ദിലീഷ്, ഏലിയാസ് വൈസ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ജോസഫ് കുരിയപ്പുറം, സെക്രട്ടറി വിമല് ജോയി, ട്രഷറര് പി.കെ. ജേക്കബ് എന്നിവര് നേതൃത്വം നല്കി. നേര്ച്ച വിളമ്പ്, സ്നേഹവിരുന്ന് എന്നിവയും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

The heartbreaking incident of the tragic death of three small kids, aged 9 were really shocked all of us.  (For rest of the world – In our neighbour village, Edappon, three small beautiful kids were killed by over speeding tipper lorry.)  Parents of school going kids are becoming afraid by seeing the over speeding tipper lorries.  Lorry owners are giving reasons that, without moving fast they can’t make thier profit.  Govt. is giving statements against Tipper lorries after each tragic incident.

Only one thing we know and we want – Ours and our Kids lifes should be safe in road.  Tipper lorry owners and drivers must be little more jentle to human life.

Along with the family and villagers of Aswathy, Megha & Sreelakshmi, we are also sad about the tragic destiny of those little kids and praying for the peace of their souls.

Also, as responsible citizens, we should act against the over speeding of Tipper lorries.  Beyond statements, we are expecting strong action from Govt. of Kerala and Judiciary system to stop this madness.  Because we are afraid, tomorrow this could happen in our own village.

Further, AP Abdullakkutty of the CPM won the seat in the 13th and 14th Lok sabha elections.

Interestingly,the MP is now out of CPM and is supporting the UDF!

The CPI(M) is facing the deepest ever crisis since its formation in 1964. The party is now 45 years old. Forty five is a multiple of number 9. This is numerologically  significant.

Apr 30: A latest archaeological excavation has added more value to the historical significance of kerala, which dates back to over 2000 years. The excavation was conducted as part of the Muzuis Heritage programme. The botanical remains were found near the water logged area of Pattanam.

Bollard, canoe, rope made using plant fibre, pepper, paddy, teak, coconut shell, frankincense and cardamom were found, they are believed to be 2000 years old. M.D.Kajale, Paleobotanist of Deccan College of Archaeology has collected the samples of these organic remains for further examination.

According to a statement released by the Kerala Council of Historical Research (KCHR), the samples will also be send to research laboratories in India and other countries for confirming the exact period the organic remains belongs to. The research work will get complete by April 30 and the trench is open to public on April 29 and April 30.

P.J.Cherian, director of the project said that the layer of clay that covered the organic remains, prevented it from getting oxidised and allows it to withstand several years. The research led by KCHR is a joint effort of Southern Naval Command, State Department of Archaeology and Archaeological Survey of India. Under water excavation is also part of this research.

The excavation gives a clear indication that the area was inhibited continuously between 8th century BC and 10th century AD. Among the excavated findings are the pot shreds from Sassania and Parhia. Other things that are excavated were burnt bricks, glass beads, relics of wharf and clay utensils. Seven copper coins and a lead coin of the Chera period were also excavated.

The 12th International Film Festival of Kerala concluded on a high note yesterday, with the Argentinian film ‘XXY’ directed by Lucia Puenzo and the Iranian film ‘10+4’directed by Mania Akbari sharing the Suvarna Chakoram award for being the best film of the festival. Apart from all the movie makers and film critics, many other dignitaries were present to grace the occasion. The awards were distributed by Chief Minister of Kerala V.S.Achuthanandan to all the winning recipients.

It was the Hong Kong film ‘Getting Home’ directed by Yang Zhang which clinched the audience award and the best Asian Film award. Meanwhile the FIPRESI jury award went to the Portuguese film ‘Sleep Walking Land’ directed by Teresa Prata. And the Malayalam film ‘Ore Kadal’ directed by Shyamaprasad won the best Malayalam film award.

Manya Akbari won the Rajatha Chakoram for the best director and Lucia Puenzo walked away with the best debut director crown. These awards were adjudicated by a panel of eminent persons headed by the Iranian film-maker Jafar Panahi. It was informed that the Suvarna Chakoram award carried a cash prize of Rs10 lakh, while the Rajatha Chakoram carried a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh.

This eight day long film festival featured many film from various languages and attracted a huge number of film lovers from all over the world to participate. The festival also helped many budding movie makers to show off their talent in a big platform, now all are looking forth for the next Kerala Film Festival.
