(8,2/10)

Fave Lines: “Say whatever you have to say, I’ll stand by you…”, “Be whoever you have to be, I won’t judge you…” , “Cause I need your sway, because you always pay for it / And I, and I need your soul because your always soulful / And I and I need your heart, because your’re always in the right places…”
Fave Lines: “Something’s getting in the way / Something’s just about to break / I will try to find my place / In the diary of Jane so tell me how it should BE!…”
20. Who You Are Without Me by Kate Voegele
Fave Lines: “I’m not a mirror / Look inside yourself / I’m not a hero / You know too well / I’m not your saviour SAVE YOUR energy / to find out who you are / yeah who you are without me!”

I saw two movies this weekend… on the same day. I fulfilled my melodramatic love with “

I saw two movies this weekend… on the same day. I fulfilled my melodramatic love with “The Time Traveler’s Wife” and then exploded into “The Hurt Locker.”

Both films satisfied, but which one came out on top?

I went and saw Timetraveler’s wife with my Mom at 2 because we had both read the book in the family and were excited for the movie. We shrugged off that it was delayed for 6 months… So, first thoughts on seeing the trailer for it on television was “Oh my god… it’s totally a chick flick” and “Goddamnit.”

To counter those thoughts, I have to say that this movie isn’t totally targeted towards women. I got some enjoyment out of it. The goddamnit thought probably remains true.

The core problem to this movie is that the viewer needs to read the book for the film not to seem as goofy. They don’t really change anything from the book, but they do leave a bunch out (all of which they left out was for the greater good and I agree with the Screenwriter’s decisions). Whenever the timetravelling guy has to explain an awkward situation to a friend or a little girl he’s just like “well, I’m a time traveller…” as if it’s a totally normal thing. I guess it’s just not made to be as big of a deal about the whole travelling thing. Plus, as a viewer, you really need to let all of the paradoxes of time travel go to really enjoy the film. I got caught up on a couple things and that soured a couple of scenes for me.

Overall, the acting’s good and the cinematography is standard. The movie was better than I thought, but not amazing.

However, the best part of the film was who just happened to be the band playing at the wedding….. a stripped-down quartet version of Broken Social Scene. My Mom can attest to how giddy I became as soon as I saw them.

See? See? That’s them back there! WOOOO HOOO!

Aaron and I saw “The Hurt Locker” in the evening at 8, and I have to say that I strongly believe this is an Oscar contender.

Okay, I guess I have to admit that I really haven’t talked too much about movies here on the blog… you know, it’s been “Comic Books! Comic books! Comic Books!” which can get a little tiresome for some of my friends or other people who just aren’t into it. Film’s a more accessible medium to most people (just because it’s in the media more… I believe comics are as, if not more, accessible than films…) who are out there. I’m actually a Communications Major with an emphasis on film and comics…. so, I probably should talk about the former more often. I suppose you should just expect a lot more in the winter when all the Indie/Oscar-y films come out.

This film follows Staff Sergeant James and his 3 person squad consisting himself, Sanborn, and Eldridge. They’re an elite military bomb squad scowering the streets and counting down the days to their rotation. Now, James has just been brought in after the last guy lost his life when a bomb exploded and killed him. James takes risks. Such as, why wear the bomb suit when the shit that’s in the car will kill anything within a couple hundred meters?

This film is by the writer of “In The Valley of Elah” which I actually wrote an 8 page paper on. So, the whole time I was thinking, “What would be the thesis for this film? What does this say about the Iraq War? How does this influence, change, and/or expand Iraq War Cinema?”

I believe Mark Boal, the writer, further comments on this new breed of PTSD that’s curdling up from the Iraq War, and how the ingredients and the signs of it are already in the soldiers in Iraq. This is mostly reflected in Eldridge’s character because he often seems disenchanted and assuming that he’ll die. However, the other characters in the unit break down at multiple points to show their vulnerability and unstable mind. Sanborn seems the most clear-headed, but there’s still something off.

Kathryn Bigelow does a phenomenal job shooting this film as the director, and she supplants hidden cues in her filming such as only having static shots when James is back home or shooting above (in this picture) to demean, but it eventually empowers.

Without getting too scholastic, this film is entertaining, engrossing, and well worth your money and time. Plus, it raises important philosophical and moral issues. With each new war comes brand new problems.

Oh yeah, Ralph Fiennes also makes a cameo.

Dark Was the Night, a comp featuring a who’s who of indie talent, was a no-brainer purchase for me.

The Books? Grizzly Bear (playing on a ton of tracks no less)? Sufjan Stevens, Blonde Redhead, Riceboy Sleeps, Iron & Wine and Bon Iver? Yeasayer, Yo La Tengo, Cat Power, Andrew Bird?

Conor Oberst? Ok, I’ll let that go …

Besides, that’s not even the whole listing; it would take me the rest of tonight to list the entire lineup of this monstrous comp. Just rest assured in the knowledge that, if you don’t have this yet, you might just miss your chance because it’s really, really awesome and, you know, people are talking …

I even overheard a few fellas talking about it at a record store the other day, how good this comp is (“And comps usually SUCK!”). Don’t sleep.

The first effort that catches my eye — though the Dirty Projectors/David Byrne cut is nice — is Vashti Bunyan’s “Train Song,” as interpreted by Feist and Ben Gibbard. Gibbard doesn’t at all have the chops to compete with Feist’s siren singing and they sound funny together. I don’t care; it works because the song is so solid as a folk document.

That’s pretty much Side 1 for me; Bon Iver’s boring and Grizzly Bear’s “Deep Blue Sea” is previously released and plods-plods-plods to boot. Bummer.

I’ve never been a fan of The National and “So Far Around the Bend” isn’t going to change that, though I can at least glean their appeal now. This is symphonic indie-rock for bedtime, right? As for Yeasayer, I’m officially interested in a second date. They sound like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah with less ball-clinching vocals and a lot more atmosphere. The ’80s are chronicled with the “whoah-oh” straight out of “The Beds are Burning” and pretty much any William Idol song, yet it all strikes a modern pose when you put all the pieces together.

My Brightest Diamond lay down a track with a lot more dark-alley charm than I initially gave them credit for. “Feeling Good” swings like a backyard playset, channeling Fiona Apple (that’s a good thing, btw) and Beth Gibbons (big-time; BIG-TIME) before a HUGE big-band outro signs off. I was expecting another lull as Side 2 progressed, and I didn’t get it. Kronos Quartet absolutely murder “Dark Was the Night,” originally a Blind Willie Johnson number, with killer string-bending and haunted-guitar environs, while Antony/Bryce Dessner and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver to the late person)/Aaron Dessner succeed in making their collaborations natural and canny.

I see Side 3 as the Pop Shot; this is where the comp’s curators went for the kill: Consecutive cuts by Spoon, Arcade Fire, Beirut, My Morning Jacket, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Dave Sitek.

Holy god, now THAT’s starpower! The first two bands on this side scarcely need me to validate their talents. Neither have blossomed the way I’d like them to over the years but I respect their mettle. Beirut is another solid group I don’t quite rush out to partner up with; come to think of it, I don’t actively consume any of these groups.

In a pinch I’d say My Morning Jacket makes the best impression of the bunch — and like everyone else I love Jim James’ Jerry Garcia larynx — but it’s all pretty good stuff if you’re of the indie persuasion (though Sitek is the only one I’ll be looking up after this review is over). And let’s face it, if you’re not you didn’t buy Dark Was the Night in the first place.

Then we (finally) get to the side of wax I’ve been waiting to mention this entire review: Side 4, featuring “You Are the Blood” by Sufjan Stevens, a cover of a Castanets song, apparently. I don’t what the fuck this guy’s been up to or what he’s going to do after that short tour he recently planned, but “Blood” lets us rest easy: Our man is still in charge of his big heart and future, albeit with a mechanized tint that sees our banjo-totin’ multi-instrumentalist hitting up digi-drum beats, tinkling piano runs, wack samples and lurid loops.

His gap-toothed, soft-serve croon is the same as ever, as is his compositional prowess. “You Are the Blood” is addictive from the get-go and full of out-of-nowhere surprises and attractive add-ons, including a shriek sample that sounds like those crazy high-pitched bleeps on Star Trek that would always cause Spock to cover his ears and bend at the knees …

From here I feel more elaboration is anathema to both the readers’ and my stamina, so I’ll just mention a few remaining names and Yay or Nay:

The New Pornographers’ “Hey, Snow White” — NAY

Yo La Tengo’s “Gentle Hour” — YAY

Iron & Wine’s “Die” — DOUBLE-YAY

Riceboy Sleeps’ “Happiness” — TRIPLE-YAY

Cat Power and Dirty Delta Blues’ “Amazing Grace” — HALF-YAY

As for the Blonde Redhead/Devastations cut, the remix of “You Are the Blood” by Buck 65, the Feist/Grizzly Bear union, the Conor Oberst + Gillian Welch tandem, and many more, well, you’re going to have to plumb their depths on your lonesome. Good luck!

(MM)

* # *

“They all want to love the cause/ Because they all need to be the cause/ They all want to fuck the cause.“

I’m Still Your Fag”.

(Marcus Martins)

* # *

O que torna You Forgot It in People um disco singular, no entanto, não é a proposta. (Ruy Gardnier)

* # *

(Bernardo Oliveira)

so aj and i saw one of the rare performances from broken social scene last night and it was definitely a treat. granted, some of the big names (e.g. leslie feist, emily haines, amy millan) were not in attendance, but kevin drew and his army performed (see: runner-up) the best set at this weekend’s summerfest. drew did mention that this was the last show for BSS for 2009, so that’s also a huge brag for the thousands on hand at eleanor tinsley park.

in any case, aj’s going to be writing the show recap because i’m going to make him, but i felt that these videos drew specific attention and deserved their own post. stay tuned for the entire weekend recap sometime in the next two days. for now, enjoy the video for “fire eye’d boy” posted above, along with “kc accidental” and “7/4 (shoreline)” after the jump.

Interpol frontman Paul Banks recently released his first video for his new solo project under the name Julian Plenti. The video for ‘Games for Days’ features Emily Haines (of Metric and Broken Social Scene ) and is rather dark but somehow also charming. The two get to know each other and then trash the place. Classic love story. Paul Bank has not only has returned to his old label Matador to release his record ‘Skyscraper’ but the album tends to sound a bit similar sounding to the first Interpol record, ‘Turn on the Bright Lights.’ This my friends is a good thing. We can’t wait to see more videos from Julian Plenti.

We’ve been thinking about writing a letter to K. Drew… a special thank you note for all the good things their music has brought to us. I’ve been a music lover all my life and I still remember the day I first discovered BSS. For me it was on one of those Friday night’s where I didn’t want to go anywhere. I was still in high-school then and in that soul-searching mode. But that night, cooped up under my favorite red blanket between 1-2AM, I was watching The Wedge – an all-indie hour on Much Music… and yeah, I don’t know if they still have this show on anymore, but back then that was the only hour when you would find some decent music. All I know is that I was all scrunched up under that blanket, my head probably leaning on a forty-five degree angle against the wall… and on comes this scratchy video with the wavy, faded voice and heavy bass, clapping… I didn’t know what to make of it, but on that day I fell in love with music. And I knew it in my heart and I followed it. It brought me here and I became a romantic when it came to all things and the world was all of a sudden fucking beautiful and sometimes just really horrible, but what I began to understand were the little things. And those little things are for me, the greatest things. And this is why I am thankful for BSS because it brought me a love for all things, not just music, but fucking everything… I don’t swear much, but even that word fucking became a romantic thing. So that’s the story. I fell in love with music, with a girl, with the world. It’s a really beautiful thing. I could go on… but here is that video that was my rebirth to love…

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH IT’S NEXT WEEK!!

This year will be my fifth year in a row and it’s going to be ammazing. The overall lineup is probably the best it has ever been in terms of being well rounded. I’m going to be a poor man for a few weeks afterwards. My tentative schedule is at the very bottom to save the eye sore.

Here’s some Bonnaroo stuff that’s just making me twist & turn in preparation (I know, last time I posted some Passion Pit, too, BUT, this CD is just too incredible and it’s just about the happiest thing in the world. Some perfect summer music)

Then, for a few random songs I’ve really been getting into, I give you Mission of Burma and The Antlers. The Antlers are a relatively unknown act out of Brooklyn, but their single, “Two” is really good. But on the other side of things, Mission of Burma are a very influential act from the early 80’s (their only album with their original lineup with members, Vs., inspired Pearl Jam to name one of their albums just that in tribute). This song, “All World Cowboy Romance”, is the finale of their first EP. It’s instrumental and it is definitely epic.

This particularly isn’t new at all, it’s been out since January and I’ve already mentioned it way back but I didn’t realize that I didn’t post the two most incredible songs on it (DAMNIT). Not posting these is damn near criminal.

And to throw in a little electro feel, I recently stumbled on this track and it’s pretty freakin’ bad. “British Mode” by Goose, but remixed by Jester. Enjoy this one, I had to look extra deep to find a good version of it (much less ANY version of it to download). Check out the myspace:

Prepare to hype or hate. It’s that time once again to praise some of the world’s best selling artists for follow up albums. Canadian super group Broken Social Scene are finally recording a following up to their self-titled third album, full band and all. Radiohead are also quick to start recording the follow up to their hugely successful 2007 album In Rainbows.

Which one am I more excited for? Go ahead and reference the title of this column for the answer to that one. Radiohead is good and all (sort of) but the coordination and complication that comes with Broken Social Scene recording a full band album makes their news all that much more exciting than lame Thom Yorke and co. recording some stuff.

Here are the official words from each camp on the recording of the albums:

Radiohead -”It’s at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out and we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re just looking at all the bits and thinking what’s next?…It was very noisy and chaotic and really fun.” via Bassist Colin Greenwood.

Broken Social Scene -”I can’t tell you what this record will sound like, who from the other great bands will be involved, but I can tell you it feels amazing to be in Chicago recording.” Guitarist/everything man Kevin Drew.

Radiohead is recording with their longtime producer Nigel Godrich. Broken Social Scene is recording with mastermind John McEntire, of Tortoise and Sea and Cake fame. I guess I’ll really be a dick about it when both sure-to-be-amazing albums hit the shelves. Until then, enjoy these tracks!
