Conto de Fadas? Realidade?

UPDATE 08/11/09: Now it appears the film will involve the battleships fighting aliens! More here.

Universal has set 1st July 2011, for the release of Battleship, confirming Peter Berg as director of the live-action pic based on Hasbro’s naval combat board game.

According to Variety the deal is part of a two-picture pic pact Berg has made where he’ll follow Battleship with an Afghan war drama Lone Survivor.

Aside from “Battleship” and “Stretch Armstrong,” Universal is separately developing “Clue” with Gore Verbinski, “Monopoly” with Ridley Scott, “Candyland” with director Kevin Lima, and “Ouija” with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes.

Personally I find the whole adapting a board game into a film a bit strange. Although the original Clue (Cluedo to us Brits) was rather funny. Mind you I would love to see adaptions of board games such as Dark Future, Zombies!!!, Arkham Horror and Descent.

For Berg, the picture realizes a passion for ship-bound war stories that he picked up from his naval historian father.

“I’ve been consumed with doing one of these since I tried to convince Tom Rothman at Fox to make a film about John Paul Jones, the founder of the American Navy,” Berg said. “As a kid, I was dragged from Navy museum to museum, and spent so much time on ships, listening to my father talk about the great battles of WWII, I did my high school thesis on the Battle of Midway. When this came up, it didn’t take me long to find a take for a film that is filled with raucous action-packed naval battles.”

That does sound cool though. Lots of ships blowing the crap out of each other. As long as they get a good cast involved then it could be a great war movie.

Berg called the film “a contemporary story of an international five-ship fleet engaged in a very dynamic, violent and intense battle” — but he would not disclose any details about the enemy force.

The film will be the next directorial assignment for Berg. Obviously this means that some of Berg’s other projects such as Hancock 2 and a remake of Dune will be pushed even further back.

What do you think of a Battleship film? Any other board games out there that should be made into a film?

Steven Zeitchik and Borys Kit – Hollywood Reporter Johnny Depp is coming off an acclaimed rol

Steven Zeitchik and Borys Kit – Hollywood Reporter

Johnny Depp is coming off an acclaimed role in “Public Enemies” and stars in one of the most anticipated movies of this weekend’s Comic-Con, “Alice in Wonderland.”

But the Mad Hatter is facing an unusual situation: Like the character he plays in “Alice,” he soon could be killing time.

Depp is attached to a number of high-profile development properties but is facing a landscape devoid of “go” pictures — those ready for production. Instead, there are a dizzying number of possibilities and schedule permutations, none of which seems likely to result in a produced movie for him anytime soon.

Producers have been interested in Depp for the title role in Warner Bros.’ “The Incredible Mr. Limpet.” Kevin Lima’s remake of the 1964 fantasy comedy that would continue a whimsical, if slightly less drama-intensive, streak for the actor. He has not signed on, however, and in any event the pic would not go into production until next year.

Meanwhile, the fourth installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean” remains a priority for Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. At an earlier point, it was going to be the next picture for Depp, who toplines as Jack Sparrow. But with Gore Verbinski no longer directing the franchise, the ship has slowed.

Disney is seeking a new director, a process that could take time. Although the studio is believed to want an established helmer of franchise and action fare, it has put the word out to agents that it would be open to younger directors and new ideas, potentially prolonging the process. That could mean as much as a four- or five-year hiatus since the 2007 release of the previous picture, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”

(Disney also would like to scale back the size and budget of the next movie compared with previous installments; for that reason, it likely won’t bring back relatively pricey Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.)

Because of the “Pirates” lag, a Depp project that was supposed to go into production after the Sparrow-fest, “The Lone Ranger,” could end up getting pushed back further, though there’s also a possibility it could shoot ahead of the nautical tale.

For the moment, though, “Ranger” also remains locked in the stable. “Pirates” writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio have written a script for the Disney/Bruckheimer update, but the studio could wind up commissioning a polish or another draft. There’s also no director, and Depp is attached to play Tonto, with the title role still to be cast.

Finally, Warners’ feature update of the ghoulish TV series “Dark Shadows” — a Depp/Tim Burton collaboration that might have shot later this year or early next year — also might be back-burnered. Burton still has work to do on “Alice,” which opens in March, and tends to spend a lot of time on prep work.

What the possibilities boil down to, besides head spinning, is that there are projects with momentum that Depp has not signed for, and projects he has signed for that don’t have a lot of momentum.

In other words, it’s a very 2009 phenomenon brought on by a star’s choosiness on the one hand and studios’ increasing caution on the other. (In what might be an emerging mini-trend, Will Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio happen to find themselves in similar situations.)

The result is that Depp could face a year or longer without appearing on the big screen.

That might not sound like a major departure, but for moviegoers, it will seem like a shift. Depp has been in one of the most fertile periods of his career: The actor also stars in the Hunter S. Thompson adaptation “The Rum Diary” and had a supporting role in Terry Gilliam’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” which hasn’t yet been released in the U.S. In the past nine years, Depp has not had more than two movies come out in any 18-month period; if “Imaginarium” gets a release by the end of 2010, he’ll have had four.

Then again, the absence of a new role might mean a respite from his breakneck schedule. Even a pirate needs some time off.

By Steven Zeitchik – Hollywood Reporter

Kevin Lima will direct an update of the 1964 film

The “Enchanted” director is attached to helm Warner Bros.’ update of “The Incredible Mr. Limpet,” a story about a man who turns into a talking fish.
Don Knotts starred in the studio’s 1964 original, which centered on the title character, an otherwise bland sort who after his transformation becomes a World War II hero when he helps spot and thwart enemy warships for the Allies.
The picture was a live action-animated hybrid, with Arthur Lubin directing the live sections and Robert McKimson helming the animated parts.
The new project, which also will be a live-animated blend, has been through several iterations, with Robin Williams and Jim Carrey among the stars for whom it previously had been developed. Mike Judge was at one point attached to direct.
Akiva Goldsman, Bill Gerber, Paula Weinstein and James Lassiter are producing, with Chris Chase producing. Greg Silverman is overseeing for the studio.
The WME-repped Lima is attached to several Warners projects, including the period sorcery tale “The Spook’s Apprentice” and the studio’s update of Tom Thumb, titled “Thumb.” He’s also on board to direct Universal’s big-screen version of “Candyland.”
This project would be another in the latest round of live-animated hybrids that began when Fox turned “Alvin & the Chipmunks” into a hit in 2007.
Warners has several such projects in development, including a Yogi Bear update. Lima is considered one of the more respected practitioners of the form, with “Enchanted” and “Thumb” falling in the live-ani category.

Title: Enchanted Year: 2007 Director: Kevin Lima Writer: Bill Kelly Starring: Amy Adams, Patrick Dem

Title: Enchanted
Year: 2007
Director: Kevin Lima
Writer: Bill Kelly
Starring: Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Timothy Spall
Music: Alan Menken
Length: 107 minutes
Synopsis: a Disney fairytale princess comes to the real world
How I saw it: on video (rented from Netflix), July 2008
Subjective Rating: 6/10
Objective Rating: 5/10 (points off for dialog, cinematography, special effects/design, acting and music)

Fun movie, only good for one watch. There were lots of chances to turn this into a terrible movie, but they managed to get through. It would have been nice if they’d used old school animation for the fairy-tale world; instead it’s a modern style, which is strange since modern “2D” animation isn’t typically used for much other than TV shows. Although the acting and music are both bad, it doesn’t really hurt the movie; they’re both what they need to be.

On the day she is to marry her fairy-tale prince, Andalasian commoner Giselle is pushed into the real world by the wicked Queen Narissa. Prince Edward arrives to rescue her but true love may have other plans.

So the movie opens with a chap who takes a mentally-disturbed babe back to his apartment and then insists his six-year-old daughter spend the night in his bed. Yeah, you try that. Kevin Lima’s fantasy romance has a heart-warming reputation but that wasn’t what I felt. The morals are: don’t get married after a day (dump him and marry someone else after knowing them for a day), think only of yourself (if you follow your heart it’s fine to steal someone’s else fiancée; in fact, the fiancée will appreciate it) and spend obscenely using the real magic of the credit card; at the time, of course, the Disney company motto. The only positive aspect is James Marsden’s Prince Edward with his fabulous floppy hair, irresistible grin and boundless enthusiasm ("thank you for taking care of my bride, peasants"). Alan Menken’s songs and score are notably bland, especially with the clear echo of Menken’s classic scores for The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Watch them and this back-to-back and weep for Walt.

This movie contains fantasy violence, mild fantasy peril.

Hollywood is apparently so starved for ideas that even board game film adaptations no longer seem like such a bad idea.

According to Variety, Enchanted director Kevin Lima is attached to a live-action film version of the popular Hasbro board game based on a screenplay penned by Etan Cohen, the comic genius who wrote Idiocracy and Tropic Thunder.

Believe it or not, Candy Land isn’t the only board game movie in the works. Slash Film reported back in November that Ridley Scott was enthusiastically attached to a film adaptation of Monopoly.

Now, most “Best of 2008″ movie lists you see around the web include only movies released that actual year. But I live in New Zealand – we don’t get too many movies as early as everyone else and even if we did – I tend to not go to the theatre. Most of movie watching happens with DVDs with me. So this is going to be a best of movies from 2008 and 2007. Frankly, I’ve barely seen any movies with a 2008 after it on IMDB. That number comes to three.

My next post will focus on all movies I watched this year. Only the top five from this list will make it to that list of twenty.

I’m finally back to the “writing about movies” fase, and this time I hope it isn’t a fase at all! So I’m back and I started thinking about which movie should I pick as my “great comeback”: a drama-oscar-worthy-type? Nah. Maybe a mind-numbing-lars-von-trier? Guess not.

So I thought instead that I should just write about a movie that fits my mood today, so that would be Enchanted, by director Kevin Lima.

Enchanted (2007) – ★★★★

If you were one of those kids that loved Disney’s classics such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Sleeping Beauty (1959), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and every other good “princess movie”, you should definetely watch this one. This movie pays homage to every Disney classic, and gives a twist in the story line by bringing the fictional characters and their “lifestyles” into the real word, more precisely: 2007 New York!

It could have turned out into a pathetic attempt at comedy but Amy Adams makes sure to avoid that by giving an extraordinary perfomance! The thrity-something actress transforms herself in her character Giselle, the sweet and naïve princess that dreams of marying an elegant prince and has her future threatened by the vil stepmother. Her singsong voice, actions and facial expressions are simply perfect for the role, and if you just let yourself get into the mood, you’ll be singing along just as you did when you were a little girl/boy. And by the way, the lyrics are clever and “outrageous”! Pay attention to the one called “Happy working song” (one of the three that were nominated for an Oscar) and you’ll understand what I’m talking about.

Of course there’s always a possibility that one of your cynical-sour-friends decides to come along for the film and ends up making every possible acid joke about the impossibility of certain things and that can ruin your mood (be aware! I speak from experience). But common, we’re talking about a Disney movie! A princess one, nonetheless. So, if you’re ready to open your mind and heart this will be an unforgettable classic full of laughter and romance, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll see things a little lighter and even give this “happy ending baloney” another try.

It’s a wrap. And hope to be back soon!

Director Kevin Lima (Enchanted), who is currently in pre-production of The Spook’s Apprentice, a medieval fantasy for Warner Bros, already has his next project lined up. Also for Warner, it will be a new interpretation of the medieval folk tale Tom Thumb. Interestingly written by Robert Rodat (The Patriot), the untitled film departs considerably from the classic tale.

An arrogant knight who’s shrunk to 6 inches while assigned to protect a princess and then discovers what it means to be a real hero.

No word on when production will start or as to who may star, but Warner believes this will be one of their big money earners whatever the year is when it’s released. Tom Thumb will apparently be a CGI creation while the rest of the film will be live-action…it sort of works with animals but will it be realistic enough for a human being, whether he’s tiny or not?

Oare felul cum e privita iubirea in basme are sanse sa supravietuiasca in lumea reala?

Scenariul este scris de BILL KELLY (“Premonition,” “Blast from the Past”). Producatorii executivi ai filmului sunt CHRIS CHASE (“Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch,” “Return To Never Land,” “Tarzan”), SUNIL PERKASH (“Premonition,” “Blast from the Past”) si EZRA SWERDLOW (“Invincible,” “Little Manhattan”). Filmul include melodii originale compuse de o echipa apreciata: compozitorul ALAN MENKEN si textierul STEPHEN SCHWARTZ (“Pocahontas,” “Hunchback of Notre Dame”).

Woodcock,” “Shall We Dance”).

Combinatia de imagini cenusii din Manhattan si imagini sclipitoare de basm este realizata de o echipa de creatie din care fac parte directorul de imagine DON BURGESS (“Eight Below,” “The Polar Express”); designer-ul de productie STUART WURTZEL (“Charlotte’s Web,” “Little Manhattan”); editorii STEPHEN A. ROTTER (“Yours, Mine and Ours,” “The Parent Trap”) si GREGORY PERLER (“Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” “Tarzan”); designer-ul de costume MONA MAY (“Haunted Mansion,” “Miles from Home”).Muzica filmului MAGIE IN MANHATTAN este realizata de compozitorul multi-premiat cu Oscar® ALAN MENKEN si STEPHEN SCHWARTZ (“Pocahontas,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”).
