Urgh I give up…yet again!

After attending a remarkably bad comedy open mic this weekend, I have realized that the future of comedy is not stand-up, instead it’s online, which is a good and a bad thing. Unlike an open mic, there are fewer uncomfortable moments. If you hate the video you can press pause, if you dislike the live comedy, you can get heckled by the stand-up, knock over a few chairs, and run out of Chuckle Hut stifling a scream. The downside to Youtube is that the comedy is not bright. This is not meant in a bad way, but if you grew up on Mel Brooks or Danny Kaye, like I did, you are in for a disappointment. The comedy I looked at for this blog article was roundly some of the worst of my life. Who are the new web 2.0 comedy entrepreneurs and what do they stand for? I scoured the internet for the profiles of some of the brightest lights out there in internet-land and found, well, not much.

First, there’s Fred nee Lucas Cruikshank, who is the second-most subscribed person on Youtube. He is sixteen years old, according to Wikipedia, and has already eclipsed Miley Cyrus in terms of an online profile. In fact, according to online gossip, soon he will be appearing in an episode of Hannah Montana. His shtick is to edit the pitch of his voice to headache high. Already he has made the leap from famous to rich, through merchandising, profit-sharing with Youtube and other means.

Full honesty, I could not get through an entire episode of Fred. The voice was just too high for me. On the positive side, I think it is quite incredible that a sixteen year old can be this motivated to market his “act.” Sure, every teenager dreams of being a star, but few spend this much time making that happen. I just wonder what pushy mother or father is behind this quest for uncharted Youtube fame, and cannot help but feel a little sorry for the guy. C’mon, you think this is all accidental? Have you watched a video of his? Explain to me how millions of people could find this entertaining.

Kevjumba is a bit older and a lot brighter than Fred. In fact, watching him spar with his more traditional Taiwanese dad in a recent interview led to many genuine LOL moments. Kevjumba may not have the capabilities of a Hollywood studio, but he has been able to mine the humor of his suburban environs with nothing more than a Handicam with ease. I have watched a couple of his videos and over time they are improving in quality, making me wonder what the future of this enterprise could be. His comedy at its best is very personal, and rightly so. A little more viral than the vlog, it exists in a realm of comedy not unlike stand-up, except, well, a bit less distant. Kevjumba is not content to talk about something that happened in his life, he will reenact it too and then invite you to be his “friend” and “rate” the quality of this experience.

Youtube comics generally live in an “anonymous by choice” environment, a comfortable home in a suburb or an apartment in Anytown, U.S.A. While it used to be comedy came from Hollywood or Burbank, now comedy is broadcast from anywhere. This is freeing but also a little depressing. There was nothing like the dream of Los Angeles. When the next comics come out of Auburn, Michigan or San Anita, Texas, will it be half as fun?

The Youtubers’ camera work is frustratingly amateur; constant jump cuts jar the viewer. The sound quality is always spotty. The acting, well, none are trained, and I have never said this before, but it shows. But who cares? The very nature of Youtube is to share lives with others, until the gap between the viewer and the viewed has shrunk enough that your fifteen minutes are their fifteen minutes of fame—reviewable for all time on small simulcast screens or iPhones. No one will die in the future, they will just lose web presence. The medium is very much the message here, and it needs constant reloading.

Most of these comics are young men, usually in their teens. Their fan base, as far as I can tell, are not other young men but, who else, teenage girls. Like any great popular phenomenon, a pack of screaming tweens is not far behind. Who is to blame them for making videos and posting them online, though? If I were sixteen in 2009 I probably would have done the same thing. Me, I did things the old fashioned way: daydreaming.

Commenters, please let me know there is intelligent life out there! Who do you subscribe to? Why?

I have a thing or two to say about Facebook:

Once you get on, it’s absolutely ADDICTING.

I just came back from my daily dose of HappySlip and KevJumba (both of which are awesome, and you should totally check them out), but all the while I was there, I had Facebook on the other tab, and every few seconds, I would be checking to see who decided to put that little red number on the notifications button, and by the time I had finished giggling over whatever was one there, and commenting, and liking, the video was already over.

I went through that process for another hour or so, before finally getting off Youtube and realizing that I had a project to do which consisted of using the computer. So, maybe for thirty minutes, I was about a quarter done with my work when, the internet icon winked at me.

No, seriously. It WINKED.

I first thought it was a hallucination, before trying to ignore it. Then came my immediate response:

“WTF?”

Needless to say, I was freaked.

But I decided to take it as a sign. I went online. Minutes later, I was transfixed with the beauty of Facebook. Then, I went to my profile, where I had posted an update of this blog, and remembered I had to make a new post.

So here I am, project still not done.

Wait. Oh damn. Now that’s blinking too.

So I’ve come to the conclusion that the members of Quest Crew or not human. No my friends, they are advanced androids from the future. This is the only explanation for why they are able to do what they do. They dance to remind the human race how untalented and restricted we are by our human bodies.

Eddie and Projekt NewSpeak went to the San Diego Asian Film Festival recently. Eddie was invited to speak on a YouTube panel with the likes of KevJumba, David Choi, Paul Dateh, Jennifer Chung and it was moderated by Phil of Angry Asian Man.

I know… why was Eddie there? Well, he killed it anyway. Yay, Eddie. We so proud of you!

Even though they are goofing off and just hanging out you gotta love how all these talented like minded individuals across different mediums have gathered in one room just to chill and hangout. HappySlip posted up this clip of a whole rack of people chilling in Victor Kim’s house.

We need more of this in the community. All you talented fools, go and be friends! HAHA

I’m just going to share this video that I was just watching which I find pretty funny.

This video is actually supposed to be about girls and interracial babies (huh?). But I really like the part where Kevjumba talks about how gullible his dad is.

LOL! MK can sort of relate to Kevjumba’s dad, because she has been called gullible numerous times herself.

In fact, I was the victim of a very similar prank which a friend of mine played on gullible little MK after he himself had been pranked.

After helping the community out the day before, Wongfu Productions and Far East Movement were more than ready for the next night where they would be in front of their fans at San Gabriel Mission’s Playhouse for ISA LA 2009 on September 6th.

Get ready for another picture heavy post.

The night started off well with the introduction of the artists to the press. All the artists seemed pumped up for the show and were feeding off the energy from the fans in the VIP line as screams and flashes (not necessarily from the press) went off each time an artist exited the door and into the press area.

After a wrap up in the now sweltering San Gabriel heat, fans, some of whom were waiting since noon, and guests were finally allowed into the house where they would be able to finally enjoy the much anticipated show.

First up, the MCs of the show Tom Ngo and Lydia Paek pumped up the crowd by utilizing the theme of back to school.

GLP started the night off strong with a medley of songs. From “Power Rangers” to their personal favorites, the group fed off the crowd’s energy.

Next was the lovely Kina Grannis with her acoustics. She had a quiet presence on stage but that provided a change to the crazy fan girl status that came with GLP’s performance.


After Kina, it was none other than Quest Crew to pump up the crowd yet again with their powerful performance to not only their own mixtape but also to a medley of Black Eyed Peas songs. The acrobatics and choreography definitely made the performance worth watching. There’s no doubt that they deserved to be season 3 winners for MTV America’s Best Dance Crew.

During the brief intermission, the audience went out to get free glow sticks from the Verizon Wireless booth and also sign up for a raffle for a free EnV Touch. When they all came back, none other than KevJumba took the stage along with Tom Ngo to get the crowd’s energy back into the performances.

They did a nice job with David Choi as KevJumba carried him onto the stage and set him up nicely for his performance. Not only that, but Kina came back for an encore performance with David. David’s performance on the ukulele was unforgettably cute.

As David wrapped his performance up, a huge screen dropped down to start playing pictures of Wongfu Productions on the screen, which we found out they took inspiration from some Big Bang covers. As soon as these pictures went up, you couldn’t hear Tom nor KevJumba try to introduce them. As you know they don’t really perform, but they did give the crowd a special screening of a short that won’t be up for the general public for another month or so featuring HappySlip, KevJumba, and David Choi.

After the crowds shushed their way through the video, platinum artist Cassie Ventura hit the stage as a guest host introducing none other than Far East Movement, who gave a strong performance as well as a lot of free goods to the crowd who were all on their feet jumping and dancing to their performance.

Overall the night ended well with lines that ran down the block with fans waiting for their favorite artist’s signature.

So for those of you who missed the third ISA no fears, because according to a couple of little birdies the next one is already in the works somewhere.

If you look closely, there’s a “I heart FM” poster in the reflection in his sunglasses.

Apparently Quest Crew has a girl on their team? My verdict? Coool.

What is ISA?

ISA is the acronym for International Secret Agents, which is the “passion project Wongfu Productions and Far East Movement (FM)” geared towards uplifting the community while “showcasing he brightest and premier talent among Asian and Asian Americans.” With their last two sold out successes, the boys undertook their third endeavor in Southern California at the San Gabriel Playhouse on September 6th.

With that said, on September 5th, the boys of Wongfu, FM, David Choi, and many other artists and groups came together to give back to the community by holding workshops for kids who could otherwise not receive such mentorship in the arts at the San Gabriel Asian Youth Center.

They held classes for dance, film, photography, music, and even business. After the instruction period, the kids and artists came together and showcased what they learned in front of their peers.

After the press conference, private interviews were held where even we learned a thing or two about what the artists themselves and even got to catch up with some of our friends.

PS!: What’s your next project?
Kev: We’re working on a new album right now and we’re throwing around different names right now. It’s more along the lines of “Girls on the Dance Floor“. “Animal” was kinda like a learning process, trying different styles and “GDF” was one of the last songs we did for that. The public reception has been so good on it that we kinda wanna make a lot of songs along that vein.
Proh: We are going on a 50 city tour with LMFAO and Shwayze.
PS!: You’re all up in the mainstream.
Kev: That’s the goal. Our goal is to lead by example and break into the mainstream and cross over by doing music we love. We love party music, we’re not deep dudes, and sometimes we do deep songs but right now we’re heavily into the dance scene and the party scene. You can’t deny it when you enter a club…y’know.
Proh: We’re also concentrating on doing another ISA and doing more 4C the Power things. Trying to do as much as we possibly can. We don’t really have a lot of time in this world, so you gotta make as much impact as you can. We wanna work with as many people and artists as possible and get more out there and help the community as a whole.
PS!:What do you think of Korean Entertainment in general?
Kev: We have a little interesting story.
Proh: Tonight we’re meeting up with Deux’s _____ for his birthday at where Crown J is performing. He actually called to invite us.
J: I’m a big a$$ fan
Proh: Yeah, we got the whole old school CDs that came in the plastic bag and everything.
Kev: We got that song with Se7en for his American album. I don’t know what’s going on with that but….yea, but we have a lot of respect for a lot of these artists. We didn’t know a bunch about it, but as we got to know it, they opened our eyes, even websites like PS! and a lot of the KPOP websites, we hadn’t discovered until we started working with the artists. Dude, it’s a movement. It’s a serious crazy movement. We’re blessed that they are accepting of us because there are superstars out there and we are just here.
Proh: The one thing we realized is you can’t do this by yourself and having more great artists doing different things makes everything so much easy. As long as their making music and you stay connected it just gets the word out faster.
PS!: What would you advise for people who are wanting to get into the music scene?
Kev: Go to 4C the Power.
J: Nice… hahaha.
Proh: The number one thing is you gotta stay serious and dedicated to your craft. As long as you focus and keep going towards it, that’s a huge thing. It may seem weird going to different events and meeting people, but you never know who you’re going to meet.
Kev: One in particular was there were only four people in the crowd but one person was from E! Entertainment and put us on the “Daily 10” on E!.
Proh: You just gotta stay dedicated and take your practice as seriously as possible.

PS!: Just for fun and to add some spiciness, what are some quirks you guys have?
J: I can’t say. Hahaha.
Kev: Every night before I go to bed… when I wake up in the morning there are ice cream wrappers and I’m like “Where the…” and then I realize that late at night I go to the freezer and I have to have an ice cream before I go to bed.
Proh: I never knew that…
Kev: Yeah, I know it’s addicting like crack. It’s a bad habit. I can’t walk by a freezer and not look at what flavors they have.
J: I’m all about the old school ice cream you know like “Jaws” and this grape icy…
Kev: When he’s bored, he puts his hair in his mouth.
J: ???
Kev: Naw, just kidding
Proh: I don’t know about quirks but we breathe music. If we’re not making music we’re working on music, if we’re not doing that we’re on facebook, myspace. We’re internet nerds. All the tweets and facebook that’s all us.
Kev: We’re not very spicy that’s what he’s trying to say. We’d be tofu…
J: We’d be Jook.
Kev: Yeah, just plain jook with no spices.
Proh: But you know what we gotta lot of banchan around us (points to the other artists).

PS!: Anything new? Working on anything new?
Dav: I’m still working on my second album. I’ll be in Korea in October working on a couple of things. There’s some Popular DJ doing Monday shows, doing some famous festival in the first week of October, going on a West Coast tour with Kev, Happy Slip and Quest Crew, going to SDAFF. In November, I’m doing a West Coast tour here in Vancouver Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, LA, and San Diego. So yeah…
PS!: Excited about Korea?
Dav: Yeah, I’ve never been there in my life and my dad’s side of the family is there. I’m looking forward to the food, sight seeing, the festival, I’m just looking forward to seeing the culture and that.

PS!: So any new developments on the girl front?
Dav: Do I have a girlfriend? No, I’m so busy. I’m really busy, I can’t do anything…

PS!: What triggered your first video ever?
KevJ: It was just me and my friends making a music video, and we did like two of those and I found out it wasn’t as cool as we thought it was. So then I started watching video bloggers and they would talk about their life, and I was interested in video blogging, but I didn’t want to be like one of those video bloggers where they talk about your life. I thought it was boring, so I mixed up stand up comedy with video blogging and that sort of created vlogging. I think I was one of the first Asians to do it, and being one of the first Asians to do it, they sort of latched on to it and now it’s grown to where it is now.

PS!: Are you working on something right now?
KevJ: I just put one out the other day and right now I’m working with ****** on something hush hush. It’s more of a higher production. People are usually used to seeing me video blogging, but I kinda wanna show people I can do acting and other types of comedies, so we’re trying to produce higher produced content. I also have another channel called Jumbafund, where we put more casual contents.
PS!: What do you think of Korean media/entertainment?
KevJ: I’ve never been to Korea but I have Korean friends and they listen to Korean pop, and I know the whole look you’re talking about. It’s interesting, I haven’t really delved into that demographic or that particular genre, but it’s an interesting media and I look forward to maybe participating in it.
