News reports on the Fort Hood rampage say that the alleged shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, used an FN Herstal Five-SeveN pistol — described in some reports as a “cop killer” gun.

What, exactly, makes the Five-Seven different from other handguns?

The Five-Seven is chambered for the 5.7 x 28mm cartridge, ammunition originally developed by FN Herstal for the FN P90 Personal Defense Weapon. The P90 was conceived as a compact, powerful weapon that could be carried by aircraft crews, vehicle drivers and other troops who needed a weapon that was smaller than a carbine but larger than a pistol.

The P90 — like a competing personal defense weapon design, the 4.6mm Heckler & Koch MP7 — is supposed to pack more punch than submachine guns that fire a standard pistol rounds (9mm, say, or .45). And personal defense weapons are supposed to be capable of penetrating some kinds of body armor. As it happens, the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, has been mulling the requirements for a personal defense weapon for a few years now, although it’s far from clear the Army would procure a weapon built around a new cartridge.

I’ve seen a range demo of the MP7, and it can indeed punch through a “soft” vest or a Kevlar helmet (whether it could penetrate SAPI plates is a different matter). Gun control group The Brady Campaign says it bought and test-fired a Five-Seven, and that it successfully penetrated a police vest. That said, it doesn’t seem quite accurate to call the Five-Seven a pocket-sized assault rifle. Its barrel would give it a lower muzzle velocity than a PN90; likewise, it strikes me as unlikely that it would give a shooter much more accuracy and effective range than a standard pistol. And plain-vanilla pistol round can be devastating enough: Think of the Virginia Tech shooter, who used a Glock 9mm and Walther .22.

We don’t know at this point a lot of the details: Exactly what kind of ammunition the shooter used; how many shots in total were fired; and at what range. That will take a lot of police work, and a lot of patience.

Still, the tragedy at Fort Hood seems likely to renew debate: Both on gun control, and on the kinds of measures to protect troops while they are on base, and unarmed.

UPDATE: Hasan bought the gun on August 1st — less than a month after he was transferred to Ft. Hood, a law enforcement official tells Newsweek’s phenomenal new Declassified blog. “At the same time, Hasan also bought several high capacity 20 round magazines that allowed him to rapidly fire off multiple rounds during the attack without reloading, the official said.

Fato, atualmente tenho duas armaduras e vários utensílios pra me tirar de qualquer enrascada. Minha mochila nunca foi tão útil. E adoro meu trabalho.

Peter on a trip to the past.

Season one finishes off with a trans-dimensional bang, and quite the cliffhanger. This episode was refreshingly easy to watch.

This episode is debunked at Popular Mechanics and Polite Dissent, and you can read more about it at Fox, IMDb and the A.V. Club.

Random thoughts

Mr. Jones shot Nina at point-blank range – surely he could have killed her if he’d really wanted to. Perhaps he just reckoned without the Kevlar-coated ribs (which would probably not have worked exactly Wolverine-style as several layers are needed for decent bullet resistance).

Wait, Nina’s “priority one grid search” on Walter couldn’t have been used to spot a highly-conspicuous guy in sunglasses and bandages?

There are shades upon shades of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy here, with references to alternate worlds, weak points between them, children as a resource and the opening and closing of crossings.

So the fundamental constants aren’t as fundamental as we think? A gradual decay would have appalling repercussions, and this is a particularly unsatisfying explanation for the “weak” points between realities.

And, of course, there are no known parallel dimensions – though it’s nice to see this sci-fi staple getting another airing.

I got outed on the elevator the other day. A co-worker spotted knitting needles in my bag.

I rarely have a chance to knit these days, and compensate by indulging in the next best thing: looking at weird knitted art online.

Listening to this week’s show, I remembered an odd, thought-provoking site that can add to Jeremy Deller’s “Conversations about Iraq .” Artist Dave Cole has a series entitled “Kevlar Baby Clothes”, which features exactly that: baby clothes created from bullet-proof vests discarded from the war in Iraq.

David Cole, Kevlar Baby Line

Cole’s work often juxtaposes the harsh realities of our world against the sentiments of childhood: a hand-knit, porcelain baby blanket (made from an “Extreme Temperature Refractory Ceramic Textile”); a teddy bear knit with fiber glass; an AK-47 that appears to be made from bubble gum. But something about the Kevlar onesie put a lump in my throat. I am knitting for a little man who will be here this January. I can only hope he’ll have to look up what Kevlar and suicide bombs mean when he grows up.

War has plagued humanity since one caveman discovered that using a heavy stick got him what he wante

War has plagued humanity since one caveman discovered that using a heavy stick got him what he wanted a lot quicker than his fists did. Since that discovery, humanity has come a long way in the development of weapons, from bronze spears to compound bows to cannons to nuclear missiles. Now of course, there is nothing wrong with this- be it saber-tooth tigers or serial killers, humans will always have something to fight. What is wrong with this, however, is that there are those who take advantage of this fact. I’d call them “human vultures”, but that would be an insult to the birds- after all, vultures don’t attempt to instigate, prolong, or exacerbate conflicts. You probably know these people as the “Industrial-Military Complex”.

Now of course, “Industrial-Military Complex” is a term often misused. Conspiracy theorists warp the definition to describe supposed shady corporations controlling the military, or vice versa. In reality, however, the term “Industrial Military Complex” is simply used to refer to companies and corporations that develop and/or sell weapons for combat (as opposed to hunting and recreation). Now is there anything wrong the research and manufacturing of arms? Of course not- every government in the world has a need to defend itself- to spend money and effort on maintaining a strong defense force is both right and natural. The problem is the Capitalist system allows for all forms of commerce, from advertising to research to fast-food to prostitution. Anything and everything can be produced and sold- including weapons.

Now the issue here should be obvious- if a corporation creates a products (a fighter jet, for example), it isn’t enough to simply have a supply of the product- you have to sell it; to sell something, there must also be a demand. As you can imagine, a fighter jet isn’t exactly cheap- selling it is going to make you a massive profit. Of course, you’re going to need someone to sell your fighter jets to, and let the facts be faced, people aren’t going to wake up one morning with a sudden urge to buy one. So now you have two options: (1) scrap trying to sell fighter-jets and sell something else or (2) create a demand for fighter-jets (and whatever other weapons you might be selling).

Now let the facts be faced; people who feel secure don’t attempt to fortify their houses or stock up on assault rifles. People only raise the drawbridge when they feel threatened- either by violence or the fear of violence. Of course, it is in the interests of those selling the weapons to promote either (1) violence or (2) fear (which, incidentally, is the definition of “terrorist”). How does one go about doing this? There are a number of ways. You could make sizable campaign contributions to “hawk” (pro-war/pro use of military action as a first resort) politicians. You could make sizeable campaign contributions to politicians in hope to buy their sympathies. You could advertise- try to convince the public that they live in a dark, scary world filled with monsters they need to protect themselves from. You could attempt to- through any number techniques- disrupt the attempts of peace negotiations (after all, the more war, conflict, and violence there is, the more weapons people will pay for).

Now this obviously isn’t right. To feed off of fear and conflict and escalation is- frankly- sick. War is and always will be a tragic but often necessary event in human history. To incite, encourage, prolong, or exacerbate violent conflict for profit is perhaps the height of immorality, and yet by the Capitalist standard the industrial-military complex is not an abomination but simply free trade- the production and exchange of goods for capital (money).

Now my message here is simple. War is being sold to you- don’t buy into it. Don’t be frightened by stories of monsters under the bed when you have the real monsters trying to scare you into buying their automatics and Kevlar. Don’t be imprisoned by paranoia.

Be brave.

Just to recap, I’m a NTRP 4.0 player who plays on average 6 hours a week. My game style is mostly baseline with pretty heavy spin & I tend to go through strings very quickly. Because I’m such a frequent string breaker, for the past several years I’ve been using mainly kevlar hybrids like Prince Pro Blend or Gosen Aramix. Many and most people claim that kevlars have almost no playability and just feel like hitting with a board. They’re probably right, but I don’t have a touch game and I like the “feel” of kevlars a lot, mainly because they have a lot of bite. So I thought, since kevlars last so long, why not try a thinner gauge kevlar for even more bite/spin.

And that’s where Forten Thin Blend comes in. It’s an 18 gauge kevlar main paired with a 17g synthetic gut cross. Boy do these strings have bite! The only string I’ve used with more bite is Solinco Tour Bite which is a square poly.

From their site:

Thin Blend is a durable, powerful, yet playable combination. The main string is FORTEN’s New Age 18. The cross string is Sweet 17 string. The two team up to provide durability, enhanced power, terrific spin control, and astonishing playability. This string truly represents the dawning of a new age in racquet sports.

After just a few minutes hitting with this string they were plastered with ball fuzz. And compared to standard 16 gauge kevlar, these do have more playability as well, more springiness in the string bed. I really loved these strings, I hit great with them. The only con is that they don’t last, I’ve used these about 3 times now and they always break right around 3 hours of actual hitting. Your mileage will vary. But I would think a non-kevlar 18 would probably also break in that time. But at $5.75 a set, they’re pretty cheap overall and deliver wicked spin at a low price. If you’ve never tried kevlar and would like to try possibly the most durably 18 gauge, these are probably a good place to start.

My Rating:
Playability – 7/10
Spin – 9/10
Durability – 4/10
Value – 7/10

Story of the day: He turned on the emergency lights

In the Encourager, Charles Mylander writes:

Los Angeles motorcycle police officer Bob Vernon saw a red pickup truck speed through a stop sign. This guy must be late to work, he thought to himself. He turned on his emergency lights and radioed that he was in pursuit. The pickup pulled over, and the officer approached.

Meanwhile, the driver thought, The cops already know! He rested his hand on the same gun he had used a few moments before to rob a 24-hour market. The sack of stolen money was beside him.

The officer said, “May I see your–”

He never finished his sentence. The driver shoved his gun toward the policeman’s chest and fired. The cop was knocked flat seven feet away.

A few seconds later, to the shock of the criminal, the officer, stood up, pulled his service revolver, and fired twice. The first bullet went through the open window and smashed the windshield. the second tore through the door and ripped into the driver’s left leg.

“Don’t shoot!” the thief screamed, throwing the gun and sack of money out the pickup window.

What saved the policeman’s life was Kevlar, the super strong fabric used for bulletproof vests. Only three-eights of an inch, Kevlar can stop bullets cold.

Quote of the day: Douglas Rumford

“A lasting work requires extensive preparation.”

Bible verse of the day: Ephesians 6:11 (NKJV)

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Today I put on the full armor. May I stand firm in truth, prepared with the gospel of peace, holding onto the the shield of my faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, always watching and praying daily. I thank You for guarding my heart, mind, and Spirit, with this full armor of protection. I love You and thank You for this blessed day!

Kevlar is the registered trademark for a light, strong para-aramid synthetic fiber, related to other

Kevlar is the registered trademark for a light, strong para-aramid synthetic fiber, related to other aramids such as Nomex and Technora.

Developed at DuPont in 1965 by Stephanie Kwolek it was first commercially used in the early 1970s as a replacement for steel in racing tires. Typically it is spun into ropes or fabric sheets that can be used as such or as an ingredient in composite material components.

Currently, Kevlar has many applications, ranging from bicycle tires and racing sails to body armor because of its high strength-to-weight ratio—famously: “…5 times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis

When Kevlar is spun, the resulting fiber has great tensile strength (ca. 3 620 MPa), and a relative density of 1.44. When used as a woven material, it is suitable for mooring lines and other underwater applications.

There are three grades of Kevlar: (i) Kevlar, (ii) Kevlar 29, and (iii) Kevlar 49. Typically, Kevlar is used as reinforcement in tires and rubber mechanical goods. Kevlar 29’s industrial applications are as cables, in asbestos replacement, brake linings, and body armor. Kevlar 49 has the greatest tensile strength of all the aramids, and is used in plastic reinforcement for boat hulls, airplanes, and bicycles. The ultraviolet light component of sunlight degrades and decomposes Kevlar, a problem known as UV degradation, and so it is rarely used outdoors without protection against sunlight.

Kevlar is well-known as a component of some bullet resistant jackets and vests. Actually Stephanie Kwolek (born July 31, 1923) is an American Chemist who invented poly-paraphenylene terephtalamide—better to be known as “Kevlar”. It has varied uses and is being used by many diverse industries in world but our concern is its use regarding as safety clothing, especially in the areas which padding such as shoulders, back and elbows.

Lightweight and flexible it is, Kevlar has evolved over four decades of innovation and technology and it has all to do everything from helping to save thousands of lives around the world; making their ridings safer and better protected. If it needs to be light, strong and nonparallel safe, it must be “Kevlar”.

It is now being used for motorcycle jackets. A Kevlar motorcycle jacket has a lot more merits than other riding jackets. Unlike Leather jackets they don’t give hard time in scorching summers, and are far safer in case of unexpected accident. Icing on cake is that these are easier to maintain, even easier than leather jackets. One would definitely need to buy a protection and cleaning solution to maintain and polish leather jackets. Leather jacket may also need professional cleaning once after some time but a Kevlar motorcycle jacket can easily be cleaned in a washing machine, any time.

Coming towards benefits of a Kevlar motorcycle jacket; for a polymer, Kevlar has very good resistance to high temperatures, and maintains its strength and resilience down to cryogenic temperatures like (-196°C); indeed undoubtedly, it is slightly stronger at bit low temperatures.

One of the first benefits of a Kevlar is that they’re great to wear during hot weather. Other materials such as leather are too warm to wear when the weather is hot outside. Kevlar breathes better than nylon and leather, so they are more comfortable to wear during hot weather.

No one ever wants to face any accident while their riding. Unfortunately if you ever do down sliding on the asphalt while wearing any other polyester, you are likely to have permanent skin damage. Fact behind this general idea is that in actual polyester has a low melting range and poor abrasion strength, so because of the high fraction with ground/surface, it may melt into your skin, also you will be bruised all over.

And on contrary a Kevlar riding jacket is much safer to wear; beyond the words. It has high abrasion and fraction resistance strength and an extremely high melting range, so it won’t melt into your skin; if something unseen and unfortunate comes……………….

Well, I went today to test kayaks and buy a new heavy-duty cart for the Outback – the current cart just can’t handle the trips down and up the hill to the water and back. I also got a rack put on my car.

They had 32-lb kevlar kayaks. Which handle up to 300 lbs capacity. Which I am now well under. So…

I got one!

I also got a PFD, and a paddle at the same time. I don’t even want to THINK about how much $$ I spent. The good news is that this yak is so light I can lift it onto my car by myself and carry it easily. So I’ll be able to just carry it on my shoulders 0.7 miles down the hill to the water in the evenings after work and just GO, without it being a big production.

My summer MS student came along and while they were installing the rack we went on a nice 3-hour paddle (from points 3 to 6) down some moving water and some flat water. I ended up christening the boat by falling out pretty soon after putting in. But after that got better at avoiding the slipstreams of rocks, etc. This is definitely a lake boat. It tracks great, but isn’t so maneuverable in a creek.

The picture above is from Ron, who obligingly went out for an hour with me in the evening when I got home. We paddled down to the state park beach, swapped kayaks so he could try the new one, and then paddled home in each other’s boat. Then I swam and he went home to change and brought back wine and we sat on the shore and gossiped about our neighbors and solved the world’s problems until both the sun AND moon set. It was beautiful out. A really good way to end the week.

Why do they still compare the strength of steel with other things? I was watching a documentary the

Why do they still compare the strength of steel with other things?

I was watching a documentary the other day, and they made a comparison between steel and a spiders web, saying the web was 6 times stronger. I don’t understand why they still compare strength against steel anymore though, as it seems to have been x times weaker than loads of stuff for as long as I can remember.

Having a quick Internet search though, there are less things than I expected, but even so, if steel isn’t the strongest thing, why don’t these others take over from it if they’re stronger again?

In most cases I suspect it could be down to the name. ‘Stronger than buckypaper‘ anyone? No, thought not. It’s made up from another contender – nanotubes, but now that they’re only part of buckypaper, the chance is gone.

Transparent Alumina is another, though the page I found for that looks like someone’s homepage from about 1997. It’s lighter than steel though, 3 times stronger, and see through!

Back to our arachnid friends, and it gets a bit confusing. I thought web was already 5 times stronger than steel (by weight of course), but another article claims that a metal enhanced version is 3 times stronger, at 5 times stronger……. Some disagreement in the spider camp then.

Nanotubes make another appearence in astrogel, though it doesn’t say by how much, one article says aluminium (well, aluminum) though it’s in one specific case, and even wood gets a mention, though using two different methods of measurement in a comparison means I can’t actually tell if it’s stronger or not (…..the building would normally have required approx. 22 tonnes of steel, and the builders have decided to…….get ready for this…….replace this with 50 cubics of locally grown and manufactured wood products), and it was for one day only, so maybe it was a space-time anomaly. I’m not a scientist though, so I have no idea whether any of these comparisons can be verified. I was surprised at how far down the search results I went before seeing kevlar, and a long way into the list, this one about superthread snuck in.

So I suppose we’ll have to stick with steel for now. At least until the theories about Neutron Star Crusts can be proved, when that should definitely take over.

They need a shorter name for it though. I nominate Scrutons.

Nope, nothing will ever be stronger than Scrutons, and we can put the whole thing to bed.
