Unlike the N97, the Nokia N900 takes advantage of its QWERTY keyboard and utilises some helpful shortcuts to allow for certain actions or to just make some a bit quicker.

Here I’ll compile the keyboard shortcuts for the N900. I don’t know them all yet, some I only picked up yesterday thanks to your tips [some, like 11/12 found by accident in seeing what happens if I did Ctrl+Alt+Del], so if you know some I’ve missed out, I’d love to add them please .

Caps Lock

Secondary Symbols/Numbers

Additional Symbols Menu

Highlight Text

Copy Text

Paste Text

Print Screen

Quick search for contacts

Quickly go back a page in web browser

Lock phone (alternative to lock switch)

Quick Multitask View

Delete lines of text without highlighting

The image below is just for clarification. I’m calling ‘Function’ key “alt” and backspace “delete” btw.

Note I’ll be adding pictures/screenshots soon to this post but have lectures and an exam to go to. On the upside, it’s Friday ^_^.

1. Caps Lock

To use capital letters either press

Shift once and the letter you want

or

Shift twice to turn on Caps Lock – all future letters will be in CAPITAL

you should see a message “Caps Lock on”

to turn Caps Lock off, just press shift again

2. Secondary keys (Symbols/Numbers Row)

To access the alternative keys, e.g. on “D “we have “#” press

Alt and the symbol, e.g “Alt” and “D” we get #

or

Alt twice

you should see “Fn is locked”

3. Additional Symbols Menu

Not all the symbols can be used via the tip above. e.g. [SQUARE BRACKETS]. You can access secondary symbols by pressing

Alt first and then Ctrl (maybe just start with Alt and roll your thumb to Ctrl)

You should see a grid of additional symbols

4. Highlight text

You can either use the touch screen or

Hold Shift and left/right arrow

depending on the direction of where your cursor begins.

To select a bigger block of text

Hold Shift and up/down arrow

You can then use the left/right arrow to refine selection.

If you want to highlight text in web browser that’s not in text editor

Swipe from left of the screen, an arrow cursor in a square pops up. Press it again to hold, then just drag and highlight [you can copy and paste using tips 5 and 6]

5. Copy text

After highlighting text just:

Hold Ctrl and “C” simultaneously

You may get a notification saying “Copied” across your screen

6. Paste text

After copying text :

Hold Ctrl and “V” simultaneously

7. Print Screen

This turns what you see on the N900’s screen into a picture – no third party apps necessary. Just:

Hold Ctrl and Shift and “P” simultaneously

8. Quick search for Contacts

When in desktop view, just

Start typing name of contact via keyboard

The contacts window will appear instantly

9. Instantly go back a page in the Web Browser

If you misspress a link, you might just want to go back a page instantly, and not go through the carousel of your browsing history. If so just press

Delete

And you’ll go back to the previous page.

10. Lock Phone

This technically isn’t using the keyboard but it’s a nice button shortcut alternative to the lock switch. Just press

On twice

11. Quick Multitask View

To view your multiple windows without having to press the button on screen, when you have an app running

Ctrl and Delete

You’ll instantly switch to view the live thumbnails of any open application.

This means you don’t have to exit full screen view of the web browser to switch windows.

12. Delete Lines of text without highlighting

To quickly delete whole lines of text without holding the delete button or highlighting a line of text:

Hold Ctrl and Shift and Delete [Simultaneously]

You’ll delete blocks texts one line at a time.

_________-

I remember there was another shortcut (something plus X to bring up X-terminal, but I highly doubt that you won’t know that shortcut already if you know what X-terminal is for)

OK – forgot about this post -for even more list of tips, Nokia Experts has a great bunch of N900 keyboard shortcuts ^_^

Everything in our world is about convenience: saving time because it’s priceless. Thus, the invention of keyboard shortcuts doesn’t really come as a surprise, but I’m still very grateful to whoever came up with such a concept (probably someone who didn’t like using a mouse). Most are pretty conventional, such as ctrl + i for italicise, ctrl + s for save, ctrl + n for new file/folder, so on and so forth. Substitute “ctrl” with “command/apple” key for Macs. So I never really understood why ctrl + z was undo, instead of something like, say, zip the file. I know ctrl + u is underline, so that’s taken, but why not make the underline shortcut ctrl + shift + u, and use ctrl + u as the shortcut for undo? Then it clicked: the “z” key is closest to the ctrl/command key. Hence one doesn’t have to stretch one’s fingers allllll the way over to the “u” key and waste all that energy and effort. What an ingenious decision!

Still, there are downsides to ctrl + z. Sometimes when I write or draw something on paper, and make a mistake, I catch myself doing the “ctrl + z” motion with my left fingers. It’s a big disappointment, especially when nothing happens. Oh well. If even real life could be controlled by shortcuts, everything would get too fast, and I won’t be able to catch up with myself. Otherwise, I love my keyboard shortcuts. Especially in Photoshop.

When coding new features or making big changes to existing functions, I end up moving around a lot of code by typing something, deleting it, copying another line to modify it slightly, moving another line up or down, etc. Deleting a line is also more common than you think.

Instead of selecting lines and using standard copy, paste and delete to copy, move or delete lines, I’d rather use only single keystrokes. Why? Because selecting a line is slow since you have to move the beginning to fully select it. Then you have to copy, move to the new location and paste. Also, it impresses any colleagues watching me code.

Eclipse has single keystroke commands to do this type of editing. BTW, this works in most editors (Text, XML, HTML, etc), not just Java editors.

Shortcut

Action

Ctrl+Alt+Down

Copy line(s)

Alt+Down

Move line(s) down

Alt+Up

Move line(s) up

Ctrl+D

Delete a line

Tip: You can also selected a range of lines and copy, move or delete them. Be careful of moving blocks of lines from one method into another or across large distances – Eclipse tends to mess up the formatting and get confused. For this scenario I use the normal cut and paste (Ctrl+X, Ctrl+V).

Not convinced? Watch the following video to get an idea of how smoothly it works. Just makes me want to edit some code…

Author: Mary Ann Richardson

Copying formulas in Excel is a relatively simple operation – unless you need to copy down through dozens or even hundreds of cells. Here’s a foolproof little trick that will knock out the task for you.

Excel provides a number of ways to copy formulas. You can use Excel’s Auto Fill feature or, as an alternative, select the cells you want to copy to, enter the formula in the active cell, and then press [Ctrl][Enter]. These methods are fine for copying formulas down a column of cells — unless the column extends down hundreds of rows.

For example, say Column A in your worksheet lists 100 products and Column B lists the wholesale price of each. You would like to enter a formula that calculates the retail price for each product and displays the results in Column C. Selecting 100 cells is a time-consuming and error-prone process, but you can copy the formula down Column C without having to select the cells. Follow these steps for foolproof cell copying:

Click in C2 and enter =B2*300%

Press [Ctrl][Enter].

Double-click the fill handle (the small black square in the lower-right corner of the cell).

Excel will stop copying the formula when it reaches a row with a blank cell in Column B. To ensure that you copied the formula correctly, click in C1 and then press [Ctrl][Shift][End]. [Source: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/msoffice/?p=1688&tag=nl.e056]

If your Word sessions often wind up with a lot of open documents, this obscure command can streamline the process of closing them and saving your changes.

This simple technique comes in handy when you’re working in multiple documents and want to make sure you’ve saved your changes to all of them.

If you use Word 2007 … you can add the Save All command to your Quick Access Toolbar:

Click the Office button and click Word Options.

Click Customize in the left-hand column.

Select Commands Not In Ribbon from the Choose Commands From drop-down list.

Scroll down and select Save All (Figure A).

Click the Add button and then click OK.

Every Thursday, Jason Goodrich puts on an event called TechThursday at OfficePort. It’s a mult

Every Thursday, Jason Goodrich puts on an event called TechThursday at OfficePort. It’s a multifaceted opportunity that I have attended more than once. I admit to being decidedly bummed when I missed the previous week due to a significant technical glitch that required all hands on deck. Not to mention an academic technical glitch the previous day that required grading papers and exams by hand.

Alas, I digress.

TechThursday. Multifaceted opportunity. It’s a chance to network, of course, and to see a local person/group/company show off a new (and usually interesting) product, but it is also a chance to engage in self-reflection and take stock of your own situation, your own direction. I’ve found myself doing this quite a bit lately. For me, I think it takes a few months for things to kick around in my head and not panic. Not panic so much as question. I question. Often. And that can be both helpful and demoralizing.

Last Thursday, I attended a presentation from 4 guys, the “Dudes” (Jon Buda, Dave Giunta, Mike Laurence, and Matt Puchlerz), who showed off an app created during the SocialDevCamp Hack-a-thon. The app is called Shortcts.in which embodies, to some extent, and idea I have had of a central dashboard from which to navigate to the myriad of Web apps I use every day. But Shortcts is decidedly more focused and as they explained how they came up with the idea, I found myself enthralled.

I should note I played no part in this app what-so-ever. The app just reminded me of the central dashboard idea that keeps popping into my head (and I keep tweeting about).

The purpose of the site is to make it easy to find keyboard shortcuts for applications like FireFox, Photoshop and even BaseCamp. For the moment, it is Mac specific, which is cool. I’ve often gone trolling for something and found thousands of Windows options, and 0 Mac options. So it is refreshing to see a Web app created specifically geared toward the Mac.

Hearing them talk about the process was eye-opening, and I was somewhat surprised I could so easily identify. They pointed to the strict 24-hour deadline, more than once, as the real decision engine. Meaning they made decisions based on what they felt comfortable delivering at end the of the 24-hour hack-a-thon, and what they could push off for later. The result earned them the Design award at SocialDevCampChicago, and they have since continued working and refining the app.

Two things struck me about the presentation that made me erase…err…think about the myriad of questions of I have been asking myself lately.

The first thing was building an app for fun. An audience member asked about their monetary strategy, and they currently don’t have one. Why? Because the app wasn’t built with the intention of making money: it was built to solve a problem (improving on finding short cuts) and for fun. One of the members can never remember shortcuts, and all the sites that came up in results were pretty much useless. And the four of them had wanted to do something fun for awhile, the opportunity presented itself and they seized it.

Money is constant issue, which I certainly don’t have to say but did anyway. It has been a constant source of pressure for me since being laid off last April, and it’s hard to push it out or bury it for any length of time. But seeing the app in action, and hearing them talk, made me realize that I have been asking the wrong questions. And I have been asking the wrong questions because those are the only questions people ask. Part of this stems from my own internal struggle, too.

The second thing that struck me was the “false starts.” They’d tried a few projects together that didn’t pan out for one reason or another. It took a few tries, and one time-sensitive event to bring an idea to fruition. And bringing an idea to fruition is much harder than simply having an idea. I’ve discovered that the idea is the easy part, despite what people say. Shortcts.in wasn’t so much an idea, per say, as a solution. Remember, one of them could never remember some shortcuts, and found websites with shortcut lists rather useless. So why not create a better way to find shortcuts for themselves?

One thing I’ve found in my thought process is that I immediately seize on my lack of technical expertise. Technical expertise, I should say, in terms of programming. I know enough to be dangerous, but not enough to be deadly. And to make an application like Shortcts.in you need to be deadly. My lack of programming skills has been a source of frustration for me. It seems to inhibit my ability to do what I want, which is kind of ridiculous, if you think about. I have a broad skill set already. Do I really need to add programming to the mix and risk pigeon-holing myself? No. I’ve acquired such a broad skill set because I’m a curious individual, constantly searching for new things. That’s one of the reasons I read so much.

Anyway, it was enlightening to see a 4 guys each bring something different to the table. I found myself slightly envious, but also encouraged as I ponder my new venture. Being self-employed/entrepreneur, it’s easy to feel isolate, to think that you’re toiling by yourself and no one else understands. That’s only partly true. Friendships and partnerships aren’t formed overnight. It might take a few “false starts” to find the right combination or people, or the right project, and that is OK.

There is some truth that a person can only take so much rejection and negativity, but it is stories like Shortcts.in that can snap you out of that, even just for a moment.

I, for one, am a fan of Shortcts.in and look forward to the next TechThursday event at OfficePort.

I’ve been using Windows since its Windows 3.1 days and I was still in grade school during that time. When I first got my hand on Windows 95 (which superseded Windows 3.1, by the way) I immediately noticed something new – the introduction of the first Windows Start menu. The Start menu has now become a staple feature every modern versions of Windows but that’s not the only thing that got introduced. Another one of the most obvious changes to Windows computing during that time was the birth of the Windows key.

My first sight of the Windows key immediately triggered my curiousity which, of course, led me to pressing it eventually popping out the Start menu on the PC’s monitor. Yet, it is worth noting that before I had the chance to use a keyboard with a Windows key, the shortcut that I knew could open the Start menu without a mouse was the Ctrl + Esc key combination. Now the Start menu is nothing but a key press away but most people still take for granted this useful little key.

Useful, I say?

Most people know the Windows key to be nothing but a special key that one can tap to invoke the Start menu. Well, it actually has a lot more under its sleeve and if you don’t know what I am talking about read on.

The Windows key may be used in combination with other keys for special functions. Below is a list of Windows key shortcuts that will work on Windows XP and above (some may even work on older versions):

Windows + B selects the first icon in the Notification Area located at the Taskbar opposite to the Start menu button.

Windows + D shows the desktop or show the hidden windows when pressed a second time.

Windows + E can be used to open the Explorer or what most people know as My Computer (Windows XP and below) or Computer (Windows Vista and above).

Windows + F opens a window to search your computer for files.

Windows + Ctrl + F opens Search for Computers. This requires Active Directory Domain Services. If you don’t know what that is then you might not actually need to use this shortcut.

Windows + F1 opens Help.

Windows + L can be used to lock the desktop or switch users.

Windows + M minimizes all open windows.

Windows + Shift + M restores the windows that were minimized with Windows + M.

Windows + R opens the Run dialog.

Windows + U opens Utility Manager (It is known as Ease of Access Center in Windows Vista and above)

Windows + Pause opens System Properties. The Pause key is usually located at the top right section of the keyboard.

Windows + S is used to take screenshots using OneNote. That is, if it is installed and running.

Windows + N is another OneNote shortcut which is used to open a new side note.

Windows + Shift is used to open OneNote itself.

New shortcuts were introduced in Windows Vista and these are:

Windows + G can be used to select the next Sidebar Gadget item.

Windows + Space shows the Sidebar.

Windows + X open Windows Mobility Center (on laptops and other portable computers only)

Windows + Tab switches through windows using Flip 3D. This requires that the computer supports the Aero interface. An lesser alternative to flipping through windows is Alt + Tab and this can be used in all Windows versions.

Windows + 1 to 9 starts the appropriate Quick Launch Toolbar program accordingly.

Windows + Alt + Enter starts Windows Media Center.

Windows + T focuses the cursor on the first button, application or window on the Taskbar.

… and a few more for Windows 7 users like me:

Windows + Space activates Aero Peek mode which lets users view their desktop without actually minimizing Windows.

Windows + P switches projection modes between clone, extend, single, multiple monitors, etc. This is useful only to people using multiple monitors like I do.

Windows + Up Arrow maximizes the active window.

Windows + Down Arrow restores the active window to the default size.

Windows + Left Arrow or Right Arrow aligns the window to the respective side of the screen.

Windows + + zooms into the screen at the mouse cursor position and launches the Magnifier utility if it isn’t activated.

Windows + - zooms out if screen is magnified currently.

Such an extensive list shows the hidden talents of the Windows key!

No one actually needs to memorize all of them. Just take a note of the ones that you might use often and that should suffice in making your Windows experience much more effective and smoother.

So do you use the Windows key often? Please take the time to answer my poll. Thanks!

Speed Up Your Work Flow

No matter what softward program you are working in, knowing keyboard shortcuts will dramatically speed up your workflow. A little while ago I asked my good friend Jeff Dykhouse to put together a “Top 20 Pro Tools Keyboard Short Cuts” so that I could do just that – increase my work flow. Unlike Jeff, I’m not a Pro Tools Master so I came to him for help. In doing so I noticed that many people were downloading this list so now I wanted to put it in one more place, here at 3 Penguins Design.

This is a PDF document, simply right-click on the link to download. I just ask one small favor – use it to make GREAT music. Thanks!

Remembering keyboard shortcuts is tough enough when you’re working on some no-pressure project at your desk. Get in front of an audience, and your mind may go totally blank. Your focus needs to be on the material you’re presenting and how you’re connecting with your audience — not on ” How do I back up to the previous slide?” That’s why it’s a good idea to pick a handful of the most useful shortcuts and make them second nature. When you find yourself delivering a presentation via the keyboard, these shortcuts will see you through.

We all spend lots of time using and enjoying our computers…and we use our keyboards as our main means of communicating with them. Did you know that there are lots of keyboard shortcuts to help us get things done? There are general Microsoft shortcuts, Office shortcuts, Internet Explorer shortcuts, and Vista even has programmable shortcuts. Keyboard shortcuts save time because it’s much faster to touch two or three keys simultaneously than clicking on a menu function and then selecting one of the menu choices.

The shortcuts I use most are the following:

Windows Logo Key (the key on the same keyboard row as the space bar, usually to the left of the space bar) + L locks your computer…handy if you want to leave the PC and don’t want anyone to use it. All aspects of your session remain exactly as you left them. You’ll need to use another shortcut, Ctrl+Alt+Del to unlock it.

In Word or Open Office Writer, I like to use the Ctrl+C to copy text, Ctrl+X to cut text, Ctrl+V to paste text, Ctrl+B to bold text, Ctrl+A to select all text or items in the current window, Ctrl+U to underline text, Ctrl+I to make text italics, Ctrl+Z will undo the last command and there are many more.

Check out this link for all the shortcut lists http://www.microsoft.com/enable/products/keyboard.aspx

There are probably many more shortcuts you’ll find interesting at this site. Print them off for use as a quick tips sheet, or bookmark the page for future reference. However, you’ll find that you’ll quickly remember the shortcuts you use most and will use the references less and less.

Remember, home computing is a blast…keep it productive and enjoyable.

Working with Excel data is a whole lot easier when you know a few shortcuts — like these easy efficiency-boosting keyboard tricks.

Trick 1: Fast navigation

When you press Ctrl and any arrow key (north, east, south, or west), you jump to the last populated cell in that direction. Think of using the Ctrl-arrow key shortcut as an alternative to pressing Page Down to find the bottom row of a data set or pressing Tab to find the last column. Bonus tip: Hold down the Shift key while you press any Ctrl-arrow key shortcut to select all the cells between where you are and where you jump with the Ctrl key.

Trick 2: Noncontiguous selections

You can select any cells you want, regardless of whether they’re next to each other in a row or column. Hold down the Ctrl key while you click on a cell or click and drag through a range of cells. As long as you hold down the Ctrl key, you can click and select to your heart’s content.

You can also use this in conjunction with the AutoCalculate function on Excel’s status bar to analyze any combination of individual cells or blocks of cells. Just select the values you want to analyze, right-click on the status bar, and choose the desired function to see the results (Figure A).

Figure A

Trick 3: Fast data entry

Suppose you want to put the same string, number, or formula into two or more cells. Using the old-fashioned approach, you’d type the string, number, or formula into the first cell and then copy and paste that entry into the destination cells. But there’s a little-known tip that makes short work of placing the same entry in multiple cells. First, select all the cells you want to populate. Type the entry, but don’t press Enter. Instead, press Ctrl + Enter. When you do, Excel will copy what you typed into all of the selected cells. [Source: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/msoffice/?p=1118&tag=nl.e056]

As someone who does most of his work on the web, I’ve developed some habits to allow me to work quic

As someone who does most of his work on the web, I’ve developed some habits to allow me to work quickly, without distraction, so that I can get my work done easily.

When I see others browse the web, it sometimes surprises me how far behind they are, and when others see me browse the web they’re surprised at how quick I am.

I’m not bragging — I know there are web monkeys faster than me. But I thought I’d share some of my tricks for the masses, in hopes that it’ll be of some use.

First, understand that everyone has their own personal style of browsing, and I don’t think you should adopt every tip below. This is what works for me. You probably won’t like it as much.

Second, understand that my philosophy is one of minimalism: I don’t like a lot of bells, whistles or distractions, and I like fast, lightweight programs that aren’t bloated or slow. I also like to work quickly, using the keyboard mostly, so that I can get my work done without friction.

So here are my tips — some of these will be old hat for web veterans, but they bear repeating.

Use a fast, minimal browser. First, if you’re using Internet Explorer and you don’t absolutely have to, please do yourself a favor and switch right now. It’s bloated and slow, insecure, and doesn’t render the web correctly. If you can’t switch, please start educating your IT or HR department about modern, standards-compliant browsers. Second, I’ve long been a fan of Firefox because it’s generally awesome and extensible, but lately I’ve switched to faster and lighter browsers that do what I need with a minimum of bloat. So on the Mac, that’s been Operaand lately Camino. Both are great and do what I need. On the PC, there’s no contest — it’s Google Chrome, as it’s the fastest I’ve tried.

Use tabs, not windows. This should be obvious but many people still open a new window each time they’re going to a new site (including my mom). Instead, configure your browser to open new tabs instead of windows. When you are reading a post, for example, and want to open a link in a new window, Command-click (on a Mac) or middle-click (on a PC) should open the link in a new tab. Now you can switch between tabs without needing to find where each window went.

Learn keyboard shortcuts. Again, this is obvious to most web monkeys, but it’s so much faster that you need to take the time to learn the shortcuts. Some common examples (using Mac shortcuts): Cmd-T to open a new tab, Cmd-L to go to the browser’s location bar (to enter an url), Cmd-D or Cmd-K (depending on the browser) to bookmark, Cmd-K (on some browsers) to go to the search engine box (the Google box), Cmd-W to close a window or tab, and so on. Each browser and OS have different shortcuts, but you can easily learn them by looking at the shortcuts in the menus of the browser. It just takes a few minutes to learn them, and then you’re golden.

Set up keyword bookmarks and speed dial. Most browsers have keyword bookmarks, and it takes just a few seconds to set up each one. Basically, for all of your common sites, you’ll want to create a bookmark, and then go to the bookmark and enter a keyword for quick access to that bookmark. To do this, go the the Properties of the bookmark and set the keyword. I recommend short keywords — common ones for me include “gm” for Gmail, “rd” for Google Reader, “cal” for Google Calendar, “bog” for my bank website, “tw” for Twitter, “st” for my blog’s stats, “post” to create a new Zen Habits post, and so on. Speed Dial is an Opera feature that other browsers seem to be copying — you set up your 9 most oft-used websites into Speed Dial, and then can go to any of them with the press of a key (i.e. Cmd-1 for Gmail, Cmd-2 for Twitter, etc.).

Set up keyword searches. Same as above, but these are saved searches you might perform commonly besides a regular Google web search. Examples might include Amazon, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, IMDB, Ebay, and Flickr searches. For each saved search, you’ll have a keyword, and then you can just search from the location bar (Cmd-L to get there) — for example, “im alyssa milano” will search IMDB.com for Alyssa Milano (once you set it up of course).

Set up keyword bookmarklets. In Firefox and a couple other browsers, there’s the ability to create javascript bookmarklets that have some kind of functionality — for example, a bookmarklet for Tumblr (to create a new post from the page you’re reading) or Instapaper (to bookmark an article for reading later) or Twitter (to tweet a page) or is.gd (to create a short url for a page), and so on (some good examples). Other browsers (Opera is an example) don’t allow you to drag and drop a bookmarklet into the bookmarks toolbar, but you can still create them: 1) create a regular bookmark , 2) copy the link url of the bookmarklet using Control-click or right-click, 3) paste this url into the regular bookmark in your bookmark manager (Cmd-B in Camino), and then create a keyword for this bookmark. Now, if I want to create a short url for a page, I go to the page, press Cmd-L (to go to the location bar) and type “is” and press enter — and instantly have a short url. This works for any javascript bookmarklet.

Fast online bookmarking. Beyond creating keyword bookmarks for common sites, searches and bookmarklets, I like to bookmark resources and pages to be read later using online tools. In the past I used Delicious (for bookmarking resources) and Instapaper (for reading something later), but these days I use Pinboard (by the writer of the excellent blog, Idle Words). It’s in beta, but it’s fast, and has both bookmarking and to-read features. Using a service like this allows me to access my bookmarks from any computer.

Block Flash. Adobe’s Flash format is everywhere on the web these days — popular sites like YouTube depend on it for video, and you’ll find it in ads everywhere, and some entire sites are built on Flash. It’s annoying, frankly. Flash is slow, and I prefer to turn it off by default … but have the option to turn it on if I want to watch a YouTube video or something. In Camino, it’s simple — just turn it off in the preferences. In other browsers, you might need a plugin or extension to turn off Flash but give yourself the ability to turn on Flash elements with a click.

Distraction-free reading and videos. I love reading without the distraction and clutter of most sites. So I use two bookmarklets: Readability for reading articles, and Quietube for viewing videos.

Turn off most extensions. Firefox is great for all its amazing extensions, but if you use a lot of them they can cause the browser to get slow and bloated, and often buggy. So when I do use Firefox I turn off almost all extensions (except Google Gears for offline access), and on Camino I use none. It makes for much faster browsing.

Don’t have a million tabs open. This is a common web-surfing mode for a lot of people, but it slows down the browser. I tend to open lots of tabs at times, but when things get too cluttered I bookmark them for later reading (using Pinboard) and then close the tabs, so I have only two or three open at any time.

Clear most of your toolbars. I like minimal toolbars, so I turn most of them off on the browser and remove most buttons, so the content is all there is.

1password or KeePass. Good tools for easily storing all your passwords — otherwise, you’ll either have to remember them all or use the same ones over and over (not very secure).

Tuning out the Internet. When I need to do serious work, I try to remove distractions by closing the browser to do actual work. If I find myself opening the browser too much, I’ll use a utility (such as Freedom) to shut off the Internet altogether.
