A friend of mine bought his girlfriend a birthday present over two months ago. The present was to be

A friend of mine bought his girlfriend a birthday present over two months ago. The present was to be a completed paint by numbers picture. Unfortunately, she has yet to receive the completed painting. Last I checked, the painting was about 25% done and the man swears his girlfriend will get the completed gift by Christmas. We’ll three months late is better than never. In all seriousness, aren’t there times in our lives when even the most straight forward projects get placed by the wayside in favor of the day-to-day tasks vying for our attention?

Along the lines of waiting for “things” – I myself have recently experienced a few delayed starts. For example, I recently bought a new computer bag which had to be immediately returned due to a malfunctioning handle. Cutting to the end of the story, I ended up saving an addition sum of money on an already discounted bag because the bag was reduced an additional 10% between the first and second purchase dates. Similarly, I finally decided to buy an external hard drive to back-up computer files, etc. but when a friend braved the “black Friday” crowds to purchase one for me, he was told they were out. Upon his return home (around 5:30am black Friday) he went on line and found one for less money and with a better warranty.

As we near the end of 2009 it’s true, some of us have not obtained all that we would have liked this year. For some (like my friend’s girlfriend) it’s a gift. For others it’s a need such as a new job to replace the one lost due to the economic downturn. Yet for others, it’s something in between a gift and a need; such as a new computer bag. So what’s to be made of all this? What can we deduce when we did all we could to paint inside the lines but despite our efforts, did not get the result we wanted? Conversely, what if we took a chance to paint outside the lines, taking a risk and trying something new, but still failed to obtain the goal?

Well, as best as I can see, good things do truly come to those that wait. Economies have life cycles to them, change has its seasons, and the race is not always won by the swift. So what’s this mean for us all? I’m going to go out on a limb and say that our good things are coming, we’ll pay less for them, and they will be what we should have when we should have them. To that end, I’m happy to announce that I’m going to extend my discounted life coaching offer through the end of 2009. While I can not predict when the economy will be in full swing again or when your new computer bag will arrive, I can safely say that by taking the time now to ensure you maximize your skills and talents, you’ll be well positioned to fill it with life’s blessings.

O.K., O.K. – enough already! All right, it’s really time to achieve that life goal already… Sound familiar? Have you hit that place, have you entered that season of life, or have you simply gotten fed up with being fed up? Goals, daily to-do-lists, action items, the list goes on and on. Sometimes, rather than rush in, we have to stop and take a moment to breath, a moment to prioritize our to-do-lists. Often this process is called “slowing down to be quicker”.

Years ago when I was a police cadet our range master explained the concept of slowing down to be quicker. Now while I don’t anticipate having to focus on shooting a felon in the commission of a crime any longer (given I’m no longer a police officer), the range master’s words have stuck with me over the years. In short, the concept reminds us to slow down (i.e., don’t get caught-up in emotions or adrenalin) when there is work to be done. As we know, often when we rush through a task for whatever reasons, we run the risk of creating a less than optimal outcome. That “less than” outcome then leads to a need to redo the work which causes the task to take longer than it would have had we slowed down and done it right to begin with. As you can imagine, law enforcement work does not lend itself to “do overs” when lives are at stake.

While the majority of our work does not result in life ending outcomes, there are times when the work choices we make alter our lives or the lives of others for better or worse. If you are finding yourself in a conundrum regarding your current workplace choices, now may be the time to slow down to be quicker. Every day we impact the lives of those around us; in positive or negative ways, but never with total neutrality. It’s often been said that those around us either bring us up or bring us down. As you make your workplace choices each day you’ll want to ensure that you have solid counsel around you. People who have your best interest at heart and who do not possess ulterior motives regarding your success.

http://hsmmexico.blog.com/2009/11/10/conoce-al-blogger-hub-luis-fer-martinez/

¿Qué vas a hacer?

en el libro, su propio nombre aparece debajo y con caracteres de un tercio del tamaño de los que usa para el co-fundador de Apple;

al buscar su nombre en Google, en las 3 primeras páginas de resultados aparecen apenas tres menciones sobre un libro anterior, 5 de otras personas de igual nombre en Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. y todo el resto con relación a este libro;

Gary Doucet came to the IT University in Copenhagen the 18th of September 2009 and held a keynote for the Ebuss Association. He presented the ground principles of Coherency Management which in many ways make use of the established Enterprise Architecture theories.

An important note in comperency between Coherency Management (CM) and Enterprise Architecture (EA) is that

Ross and Weill (2005) fell into a trap with their definition of EA since it is way to technology orientated. IT should be on how to improve the way the organization does its business. – Gary Doucet

and that opposite the EA perspective which mostly work with the idea of technology optimization then Coherency Management is based on the assumption that all companies have an architecture; however quite a few of them haven’t made them explicit.

If a company hadn’t an architecture then the company wouldn’t exist because the the company wouldn’t be able to do its business.

Another example of the differences between EA and CM is an enterprise wide perspective which includes the business side since CM is about making the business achieve its goals in a smarter way where EA projects often leads to dealing with technology in a smarter way.

The CM has to be put under its own office and should report the a CXO (top management) instead of the CIO since then it will often lead to a technology project.

So in a way the concept of coherency management includes the ideas and models from EA but in its way it will become a new discipline!

But he also does select corporate presentations and we book him for those as well. Take a lunch break and view this video to learn about underwater exploration. As Ballard points out, we had already been to the moon and played golf there before we did any serious undersea exploration, and the budget for NASA absolutely eclipses what we spend finding out about our own planet’s undiscovered surfaces. Check it out here.

Early this year I was asked to work on a history of the Autism Society for our Web site. As one of the younger staff members, it was especially interesting to see where this organization has come from and how much we have accomplished. The Autism Society has been there through the major accomplishments in autism the last half of the 20th Century – helping get people on the spectrum a right to a free and appropriate public education, advocating for autism research at the National Institutes of Health, and establishing the first autism tissue program are just a few examples.

This history was the launch point for the video that will open the conference on Thursday. Starting with an interview with the Autism Society’s first elected president, Ruth Christ Sullivan, we have been collecting perspectives on how the themes of the past will color the future of autism. We also spoke to Sondra Cunningham, founder and current president of our local DC Chapter; Stephen Shore, a board member and person on the spectrum; Valerie Paradiz, Panel of People on the Spectrum of Autism Co-Chair; and Martha Herbert, our director of treatment-guided research. Though we won’t be able to post the videos until after the conference, I wanted to share a bit of a preview today.

I was lucky enough to be able to travel to New York to assist in the interviews of Dr. Paradiz, Dr. Herbert and Dr. Shore. Dr. Paradiz was our first interview that day, and from the beginning her insights were enlightening. Our opening question was on what the youth could do to take up the mantle of advocacy. When we wrote the question, our thinking was, “What can youth with autism do?” but her answer focused around typical youth. It really made me think more about what I had done, and could have done, growing up with a brother on the spectrum.

As much as you work hard to protect the civil rights of other groups, perhaps it’s now time for you to think about individuals with disabilities, individuals with autism and how can you take steps to really preserve and protect and nurture those rights. Can you do it in the hallways at school, or on your campus at your college? Can you become a little more sophisticated in how you view people with autism? And what can you do to begin to meet them partway in your day to day life and truly and genuinely integrating them into the culture?

Of course, she had plenty to say about youth on the spectrum too.

I think that any opportunity for them to become more self aware for knowing others on the spectrum, and to become more self aware in what their rights are – and that it’s okay to advocate for them and stand up for them. In doing so, we actually help others along on the spectrum who either haven’t learned those skills yet, or can learn by our own modeling and benefit from all of us as we work together.

Self-advocacy was something that came up in all the interviews, but another similar recurring theme was the idea of incorporating many worldviews and perspectives as we look to the future. Dr. Paradiz put it this way:

My hope is to … be able to articulate our needs and experiences as people on the spectrum to our neurotypical friends in the professions, in schools, in agencies so that we can all work together to build bridges and create an even more diverse understanding of what autism is. Because together all of our voices count.

Stay tuned for more from our interviewees in Part II …

MISTER JOBS “FUROU A FILA” ??! Eis a questão…

Steve Jobs teria furado a fila?

We recently wrapped up a keynote presentation for one of our clients at the NABShow (National Association of Broadcasters) and tested some new technology for conducting an audience survey.

One of our ongoing challenges is collecting data about how the audience responds to the messages in the content we’ve developed. Ideally, we like to survey the audience both before and after a keynote so that we can more accurately measure the shift in opinion. Unfortunately, access to the audience is often outside of our control. Many times we are producing individual keynotes that are part of larger events produced by outside media or industry groups and the ability to survey the audience is limited.

In this case, we were limited to polling the audience very briefly at the end of our keynote. But, we still managed to generate a response rate approaching 10%!

We achieved this in two ways. First, we provided an incentive for completing the survey: a chance to win a valuable software package. Second, we made it easy to complete the survey.

We used an SMS-based instant messaging survey for the first time, in addition to a traditional HTML-based survey.

By texting the word “keynote” to a short IM address, anybody in the audience with a mobile phone was able to take part in a brief, interactive, 4 question survey. More than half the completed surveys were returned via SMS (vs. the traditional Web-based survey), effectively doubling our response rate.

There were some tradeoffs by using SMS based surveys, but we came up with some good workarounds. I’m very encouraged by the initial results and I think this will continue to be a valuable tool in our audience research arsenal — especially for younger and text savvy audiences who are used to texting.

Harness the Energy! Power Up!

Get energized this Fall with our exciting lineup of guest speakers, seminars, and special events at MHSLA’s 2009 Annual Education Conference. Every day provides opportunities for continuing education credits, for networking with colleagues, and for fun – all at an amazing low price!

We kick off the Conference with two full-day Continuing Education seminars. Measuring your impact, presented by NN/LM GMR Associate Director Ruth Holst and Outreach and Evaluation Coordinator Jacqueline Leskovec, gives librarians the tools to measure and express our value to the institutions we support – vital survival skills in this bottom-line-focused environment. GMR Techology Coordinator Max Anderson will lead Geeks bearing gifts – a fun, fast-paced, informative introduction to the hottest technology trends.

Wednesday night’s opening reception will feature food, friends and fun … don’t forget your dancing shoes! Take the opportunity to renew old acquaintances and make new friends while listening to – or dancing to – an eclectic acoustic band. Lazy Blue Tunas promise tight harmonies and loose guitars. And afterward, maybe you’ll want a dip in the Doubletree’s indoor pool, or even find your way to some of downtown Holland’s nightspots.

Don’t stay up too late! You won’t want to miss Thursday morning’s keynote. Dr. Stephen D. Cohle, Chief Medical Examiner for Kent County, Michigan is the author of the true-crime titles Skeletons in the Closet: Stories from the County Morgue and Cause of Death: Forensic Files of a Medical Examiner. Dr. Cohle’s presentation will be followed by the MHSLA Membership Meeting. After lunch, get up to date with State Librarian Nancy R. Robertson and the staff of NN/LM GMR, then earn some CE credits in Barb Platts’ workshop, Emergency Preparedness for your Library. Take some time to scope out your colleagues’ posters and vendor booths, as well. Be sure to stick around for the Exhibits Raffle at 4:45 – you must be present to win.

In the evening we’ll be whisked off to a dinner cruise on the Holland Princess. The Victorian-style paddlewheel riverboat tours Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan, cruising past the Big Red lighthouse, while we enjoy a leisurely meal. What a great way to relax!

As the week winds down, we’ll still be powering up! Friday morning, we’re off to Holland Hospital’s computer lab for a 3-hour hands-on workshop: PubMed for Experts, taught by Merle Rosenzweig and Deborah Lauseng (InfoPoint librarians, Taubman Medical Library). Update your skills, share your most challenging searches, and find out what’s new as PubMed continues to evolve.

Alternatively on Friday morning, catch your colleagues’ presentations, or try your hand, at Pecha Kucha Dutch! Pecha Kucha (pronounced peh-chak-cha) takes the snooze out of PowerPoint presentations by speeding up the action and squeezing out the fluff. What can you say in 20 slides at 20 seconds each? It’s the bullet-point version – administrators should be impressed!

After lunch, 63rd District Court judge Sara J. Smolenski will give our closing keynote. Here Come the Judge!

And there go the librarians! We’re finished at 2:00 pm, and the downtown shops are still open!

Speaking of bargain-hunting – did I mention what a great deal this conference is? The MHSLA Board has graciously agreed to underwrite part of the cost of this year’s conference. Full conference registration for MHSLA members includes three action-packed days with all CEs (up to 10.5 CE hours), meetings, keynotes, posters, presentations, vendor exhibits, 3 breakfasts and lunches, the opening reception with entertainment and “hearty hors d’ouevres,” and Thursday dinner and cruise for one low price of $250, if you register by August 21, 2009.

Can’t make all three days? There are single-day and two-day registration options for as low as $75. Not a member? Join now; a personal membership is only $15 – or pay the slightly higher non-member registration fee. We’re also offering student rates with proof of enrollment. Find the fees and options on the 36th Annual MHSLA Conference registration form, either at the Association web page (http://www.mhsla.org) or this Conference blog; find the “Conference Registration Form” link just below the banner at the top of this page.

And to seal the deal, the Holland Doubletree is offering a terrific rate of just $79.00 per night! (Plus taxes, of course.) Reserve your room by phoning the hotel at (616) 394-0111 or registering on the Doubletree website, http://www.doubletree.com. Be sure to use code MHS to assure the $79.00 conference rate.

We’re powered up! See you there!

A lot of people at Insights stopped me to say, “Hi Don, I remember you from your passionate Accpac keynotes. By the way, how did you get ready for speeches like that?” Let me answer that here.

I started by taking a long, meditative walk in the woods to select an emotional context. If you nail the emotional context and figure out how to communicate the emotional content, the rest is easy. Winston Churchill explained how best to communicate emotional content – use short words and old words. Blood, sweat, toil and tears are old words. “Defend our island home” nailed the Anglo-Saxon myth (according to my interpretation of Tolkien) using short, old words. A recent example, “yes we can”, has straight-forward superficial meanings AND deep emotional connections.

My favorite emotional context for an Accpac keynote was “protect the baby” or “protect the children”. Business partners working for years with software products treat them as their babies or children. It was my job to protect and defend the children in our family. If a competitor said that their baby was more beautiful than our baby, my answer was that our baby was the most beautiful baby in the world. If a competitor said that their children would grow up fast on stored procedures, my answer was that our children would grow up strong with platform independence.

How do you deliver this kind of message? I did it loud and strong. Any amount of passion is permissible in defense of your children.

I could say a lot more . . . perhaps another time.
