Whoo chile! Why am I sucked in to watching the BET Awards every year? They are not solidified as a credible awards show but another way for black folks to show “the man” that we need our own network to chuck-n-jive for the whole world to see. I won’t say that the show overall was a complete failure but their so-called “tribute” to Michael Jackson was null and void. The only tribute that is worth mentioning was Ne-Yo’s “beeeyoootifull” rendition of MJ’s “Lady In My Life”. I was moved to tears because: A) One of my fav MJ songs B) Ne-Yo did it justice and made me miss the King of Pop even more!

I thought there would be a long set with an MJ medley and a host of artists singing on stage together but instead they chose Ciara to sing “Heal The World”, New Edition to funk (and I so mean another word) up a few Jackson Five songs and Ne-Yo and Jamie Foxx gave an encore performance of “I’ll be There”. At least Joe Jackson was in the audience (a lot of questions as to why but I didn’t care that hard) and Janet made a strong appearance, thanking everyone on the behalf of her family: “to you all Michael was an icon. To us, Michael was family.” She was very emotional and didn’t speak for long but I commend her for even showing up.

PERFORMANCES

Jamie Foxx was the host but what made you think he wasn’t going to perform one of the hottest songs of 2009? I must say that I was impressed at how he switched up the ending of “Blame It” with a rock twist by adding Travis Barker on the drums at the end. Jamie grabbed a guitar but whether he was actually playing it or not was up in the air.

What did it for me was T-Pain’s appearance. I must say that he is a modern day “sambo” that we all love to watch. This guy had me cracking up with his chain and as ignorant as it looked, I kinda wanted one! (It got worse when I was singing along to SouljaBoy’s “hopped up outta beeeeeeed turned my swag oooooooooonnn…” It’s spreading)!

With the half-empty bottle of Nuvo, too? Or is it half-full? Hmmm...

Beyonce, Beyonce, BEYONCE…ok, y’all know she’s my girl so I’m a smidge biased! I just knew after she sang the first round of “Ave Maria” from her “I Am” side of her latest album that she was going to snatch that white robe off and shake a tailfeather to “Ego” or “Single Ladies…or both!

EH-EH…instead she opted for an attachable Alice In Wonderland-ish wedding gown…

…and she continued to sing Sarah McLaughlin’s “Angel” and then back to “Ave Maria” in Italian, I believe, don’t quote me. Anywho, I understand the artistry of it all…but it was the BET awards, Bey! I understand the “I Am” side of you but those watermelon-eating, chicken finger-lickin, jiggin clowns don’t. They only understand “Sahsa Fierce’! You could hear a pin drop in the place. This is Oscar or Grammy material…BET Awards? Not so much…But I appreciated it

I have to say that Ne-Yo won my heart for the show because he put together his “Year of The Gentleman” showcase with Keith Sweat, Guy, and Bell Biv Devoe! I was jumping up and down and all around my living room as I re-lived my pre-teen years JAMMIN to the hits these guys performed last night!

I think I’ve heard “Trust” by Keyshia Cole featuring Monica a few times on the radio. I love the song and was surprised that the original “Ms. Thang” of R&B made an appearance with K.Cole on the show. The performance was awesome and I was so pleased to see Monica poised and full of class and still carrying her classic, signature soulful pipes! Might I add that her hair and makeup was fierce AS ALWAYS. She’s been puttin’ it down since 1996!

The O’Jays were honored as recipients for an award that I forgot, lol! I do know that it was for lifetime achievement as entertainers and “dancin’ and sh*t” as Eddie Levert so eloquently blurted out on stage while they were receiving their award (and BET FAILED to censor this along with a host of other curse words from other artists). The best part of their tribute was TYRESE!!! Trey Songz, Johnny Gill and Tyrese came out suited in black and had all of the O’Jay’s signature moves down as they sang “Backstabbers” and “Stairway to Heaven”. All I  could think about…HONEY…was TYRESE!!! He sang his arse off! Forget the other two busters…well, not Trey cuz I semi-like him as well…but not as much as TYRESE!!!!

You know I had to add the performance of my new theme song “God In Me” with a guest appearance by Queen latifah! I was groovin and the “Mary’s” gave an awesome performance while lookin’ uber-haute!

And last but most defenitely NOT least…a man who went into an eight year hiatus and has emerged with a new album set to come out in about 2 weeks. You know that BET is anti-real music nowadays so when he started to croon his sexy vocals into the mic everyone in the audience started shaking and spitting green goo out of their mouths and eventually turned into gremlins (real music is the industry’s kryptonite, ya know)?! I am referring to Mr. “Pretty Wings” himself…Maxwell!

The feathers were a nice touch!

This is by far, the best thing BET could have done for me that night. The song, the vocals and the suit are sending me “swangin” (like Mint Condition- a real band that you prob don’t know about). I can not wait to see him in concert with Chrisette Michele!

Any other performance was simply not worth me talking about…point blank and PERIOD!

Overall, in my opinion, and mostly all of my Twitter fam (lol), the BET awards was really the Jamie Foxx Awards, hahaha! He wasn’t corny and he made some pretty good jokes as well as helped everyone celebrate the life, music and style of our beloved Michael Jackson. But, BET has the poor man turning and he hasn’t entered a grave yet! Hopefully MTV will do a better job at the VMA’s and give him a proper memorial that we will remember for years to come.

Well a real mixed review of the BET AWARDS 2009…. A suprising opening act in New Edition, an energetic host in Jamie Foxx, a fitting tribute to the legendary OJays finished off with one of many tributes to the GREATEST performer of our era – MICHAEL JACKSON.

My favorite performance was the OJays tribute by Tevin Campbell, Tyrese, Johnny Gill and Trey Songz though have to give a shout out to Jamie Foxx’s band…. They tore it up on ‘Blame It’ of course with an added Snoop Dogg and Travis Barker to add flavour to the already HOT track…. Could’ve done more to acknowledge the ‘King of Pop’, though all in all an OK awards show….

If I ever had a reason to appreciate my family beyond the holidays and gatherings watching Ms. Frankie Lons, birth mother of R&B superstar Keyshia Cole, in action would be it. Her bubbly personality and sometimes-questionable antics have won over the hearts of fans from around the globe, yet her journey to get where she is today has many raising their eyebrows. I know one of the main reasons I tuned into BET’s “Keyshia Cole’s The Way It is” was because of the charming trash-talking Chihuahua-like woman. Spontaneous and responsible for classic sayings such as “man down” & “code ten” Frankie does what she wants, when she wants. That feisty attitude along with drive has helped her to conquer a severe drug addiction although many beg to differ, lifted her from the lucrative yet risqué prostitution business, and reunited her with her children.

This weekend while drifting from airport to airport, I grabbed the latest issue of Sister 2 Sister magazine with Frankie & Neffe (Keyshia Cole’s sister) on the cover. The ladies are set to premiere the “Frankie and Neffe show” that will debut on BET August 25^th.  The interview was very thorough and for all the naysayers who may feel that Frankie is profiting from Keyshia’s success, Frankie revealed that she now has a hustle of her own- walkthroughs?

For those who don’t know, a walkthrough is when a celebrity gets paid to show up at events such as clubs or private parties. Ms Frankie Lons revealed that she gets paid between $2000-$3000/walkthrough.

I only wish I could earn a living by walking through my office from the front door right out to the back!!!!!

Many may perceive Frankie Lons as a leech feeding off of her daughter’s success, while some believe she is a star in her own right. After all I’m sure the ratings stayed a float on “The Way It Is” because of the impulsive outbursts and catch phrases, comedic relief if you will. I feel as if this woman has come a long way, her presence on the camera and in her daughters’ lives have helped make the family more cohesive.

Frankie has audiences captivated because she represents that family member who we get embarrassed by. I cried while watching this interview (don’t tell anyone!), although I never experienced living with a parent who was into drugs or prostitution I’ve personally had to deal with the an absentee father, and a mother who battled with chemically unbalancing ailments. In many ways I can relate to both Keyshia Cole and Frankie. Growing up I was surrounded by friends with stable two-parent families and always felt the odd one out. Even to this day when colleagues reminisce of their summer family vacations to Disney world, I remain silent.

Over the years, I’ve built up the strongest defensive game known to mankind; The strategy was that if I hold in my emotions like my body was a piggy bank, I’d come out stronger and successful and I would “show them all”. Yet from time to time the strategy gets side tracked with fantasies of how it would be if they (parents) would just “get better”. I suppose that’s why I cry. I cry because I know that we have to love what we are given, even if it’s the short end of the stick and we do, even if the love is buried deep inside our colons.

I know my family or Keyshia Cole’s family may not mirror that of your family, but how do you deal with the family member who has embarrassed or hurt you? Is it possible to love your blood even when they have constantly let you down? And more importantly will you be tuning in to the Frankie & Neffe Show?

Have ya’ll seen pictures of Keyshia Cole and her new man, Cleveland Cavaliers point guard,  Daniel ‘Boobie’ Gibson? Well every time you see them she’s always hanging all over him, up in his grill, nipping at his heels, sitting in his face. Damn, Keysh can he breathe? After only a few months, they say she has a tattoo with his name on her shoulder. Keyshia pump your brakes just a bit, sit back and play your position. Remember it wasn’t that long ago when Young Jeezy said Keyshia bought him a ring and proposed to him. He turned her down and said she was moving too fast, and even started stalking him after they split up. Who has to stalk Young Jeezy? Seems like Boobie’s a good dude. Let’s just hope Keyshia doesn’t run him off.
