this term was really good because we went to Te Papa museum to work on patterns. My job was to inteterview 20+ people on how patterns related to their lives i got answers like: Paisley, stripes, koru, hexagon, geometrical and tribal tattoos. I liked the fact that we learnt Russian and Chess. Chess was challenging because some of us couldn’t play it and thanks to Mr. Newton we leant. Russian was challenging too because its a really difficult language. Russian is difficult because it is made of completly different sounds to the English language and I can’t roll my r’s. We are doing some work on the lakeview stream and Elton Perry came to talk to us about the life and plants in the stream. Elton put his net down to try catch some mayflies and very skinny worms he caught a short finned eel that was heading upstream to hibernate. We hoping to fix the stream so that there is clean water in the stream so it is restored to its natural self.

This movie was made from scratch. I did it in one day which is good compared to the other ones that took two days. It usually depends on the ideas that we get from them and about how we are going to set everything up. My task was to create an animation that had three characters but i added one more and the rest were stationary and at least four gallery objects to create a scene of my choice. keziah. here is a website to watch some egs

I enjoyed Term 1 especially when Mr Newton came in and worked with us on chess. I liked the challenges that he wrote fo us that we had to work through. I also liked learning Russian with Victorya. I have learnt how to say my name and some tbasic words….like good and thanks. I also enjoyed doing patterns. The ohio star was fun because it was challenging getting the triangles coloured correctly so that it actually was an ohio star and not another pattern. I like doing the colleges too. We couldn’t always identify the pictures but we could tell they were patterns. The portrait was cool too but it was tricky getting the colours correct because it was not easy to look at your face without a mirror

After two plus years in our urban(esque) rowhome, we’re out of excuses for not having paint on our walls. My challenge is to choose based on the actual color rather than my enthusiasm for having walls called Tate Olive. Which really could be a baby name, or possibly a sibset.

But it’s actually a shade of green that might be in our living/dining/kitchen room.

Speaking of design, anyone else think Bravo’s new show 9 by Design likely to up the number of baby girls called Bellamy in 2010 and beyond? Even without the Novgoratz clan’s delightfully named brood, she’s a successor name to popular pick Avery and a tailored way to get to Bella, too. Bellamy has yet to appear in the US Top 1000.

Another reality show name that could pop? Tinsley, as in socialite Tinsley Mortimer, now appearing on The CW’s High Society. I’m not watching HS, but I can imagine Tinsley taking off.

Elsewhere online:

Via Daddytypes, an unusual sibset spotted: Apollo, Diana, Athena and Hermes – and they were kids in the 1960s, proof that Extreme Baby Naming is not a 21st century phenomenon;

Babynamelover spotted a Troyden Cooper, a little brother for Bentley and Rexton. It’s interesting to watch a trend morph, isn’t it? While Brayden and Caiden aren’t feeling original anymore – even to those who don’t obsessively follow baby name news – there’s still room to take a DIY approach to baby names, adding a -den, -ley or -ton to nearly any plausible first syllable;

For Real Baby Names brings us Awesome Lee Sunshine - it’s a girl. As 4Real wrote: “It takes a lot to surprise me these days when it comes to baby names, but this one did.” While Lee is a pretty neutral choice, the combo is wildly over-the-top;

Sebastiane at LegitBabeNames covered Polish rarity Cieszygor and Japanese staple Haruko – charming, because they showed up in my Google reader back-to-back and I found myself thinking up scenarios where a couple answering to the names met and fell in love – and named their kids Jane and Michael;

Via Elisabeth at You Can’t Call It “It,” I found the blog Design Mom. Which would be great all on its own, because, as I mentioned earlier, I could use some inspiration. Written by Gabby Blair, she and husband Ben also have five nicely named kids - Ralph, Maude, Olive, Oscar, and Betty – plus #6 is on the way! Elisabeth suggests ideas for baby Blair and the comments are fascinating;

Another megafamily, with a very different naming style, can be found at BakersDozen. The kids are Jubilee, Ezra, Mordecai, Boaz, Adalia, Hezekiah, Kalina, Keziah, Avi, Tilly, Enoch and Judah. And mom, Renee, is also pregnant! They’re not quite like the Duggars, though – about half the kids were adopted. Renee is also a truly gifted children’s photographer – too bad she’s in Bellingham, Washington, or I’d be calling for an appointment;

She’s an Old Testament matriarch and a twentieth century staple.

Thanks to Kelly for suggesting Rebecca as Name of the Day.

Choose your fictional Rebecca. From Vanity Fair’s opportunistic Becky Sharp to the buoyantly optimistic Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, the name has been worn by dozens of characters.

Real life Rebeccas are equally plentiful. In the US, the name peaked at #10 in the 1970s, but has never truly fallen out of favor. Even in her least popular year – 1926 – Rebecca ranked #185. In 2008, she was #119 – past her moment, but still in steady use. She’s also in the Top 100s in Italy and Denmark, Canada and the UK.

And why not? The Old Testament Rivkah was wife to Isaac and mother of Esau and Jacob. She’s considered a compassionate and loyal character. Along with Isaac, Abraham and Sarah and Jacob and Leah, she is believed to be buried in the Cave of the Patriarchs near Hebron, south of Jerusalem. It’s among the holiest sites in the Ancient World for Christians, Muslims and Jews.

Some link the name to the word for noose or binding, while others suggest that it actually means connected – a similar word, but with a very different spirit.

Rivka became Rhebekka in Greek. During the early seventeenth century creation of the King James Bible, the Rebekah was favored. Both names were in amongst medieval Jews.

Rebecca is generally considered the Latin form, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a woman using the spelling much before the 1600s. That’s around the time she caught on with Puritan parents and came to the American colonies. Unlike fellow Biblical picks Keziah and Jemima, Rebecca has remained.

Besides the two literary characters mentioned earlier, there’s:

Television’s Becky Conner, one of the daughters on Roseanne and Rebecca Howe, Kirstie Alley’s character on Cheers;

More recently there’s Becky Bloomwood, heroine of the Shopaholic chic-lit series turned movie;

Similarly, Rebecca Dopplemeyer graduated from the pages of the Ghost World graphic novels for a big screen adaptation;

Actresses wearing the name include Rebecca Romijn, Rebecca de Mornay and Rebecca Gayheart;

“Rebecca Came Back from Mecca” was a popular song in the 1920s.

But the most memorable Rebecca might be the one we never see. Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 novel Rebecca was a hit and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 Oscar-winning adaptation remains a classic. Despite the fact that Rebecca is unseen – and not blameless – the name benefits from the romance and drama of the story.

Just like Damien was boosted by The Omen, Rebecca’s ascent was helped along by the book and film. In 1937, Rebecca ranked #166. By 1941, she was #86 and would climb every year into the 1970s. A German-language musical version debuted in Vienna in 2006, and it is said to be headed for Broadway.

As for Rebekah, she’s a valid variant, but far less common in recent years. She reached the 140s in the 1980s and 90s, and stands at #354 today.

There’s nothing unusual about Rebecca, but she remains a solid choice – steadfast but with a touch of romance. For parents today, she might strike that elusive balance of familiarity without being shared – at least not by other girls in her class.

On a warm planet, close, close by, a powerful force was stirring in the underworld, patiently awaiting the time for it’s release. This force was to be realized in the epic pairing of Pale & Telly as the Heroes 4 Hire, and their quest for pure listening pleasure. As up and coming producers in the burgeoning music scene of Baltimore, they hope to attract eyes and ears to their diversely influenced brand of hip hop.
Looking for a Biblical pick that’s less common than Hannah, but more accessible than Zipporah?

Looking for a Biblical pick that’s less common than Hannah, but more accessible than Zipporah?

Thanks to Julie for suggesting Keziah as Name of the Day.

Remember Cassia from Monday? Keziah is her Hebrew equivalent, one of the long-suffering Job’s daughters in the Old Testament.

Job actually had three girls, born as a blessing after his sufferings – besides middle child Keziah, there was big sis Jemima and little sis Keren-Happuch. Because all three sisters received an inheritance from dad, some think of the phrase “Job’s daughters” as signifying equality between genders.

Just like Cassia, Keziah means cinnamon – or, technically, cinnamon-ish. (Cassia is actually a separate herb.)

Also like Cassia, she has multiple possible pronunciations. But while most make Cassia a two-syllable name, the three-syllable keh ZEE ah is probably closest to correct in this case.

It’s far more difficult to pin down Keziah’s spelling. You’ll also find Kezia, Ketzia and Ketziah. Like many an obscure Biblical moniker, she was in vogue from the 1700s onward.

This lends Keziah a certain colonial cool. She appears on the list of colonial names for girls over at Nameberry, along with other Biblical rarities and virtue names. She’s the perfect sister for Selah or Patience.

There’s a royal and a presidential twist to this name, too. Kezia Obama was the first wife of Barack Obama, Sr. (And mom to our 44th president’s half-brother, Malik.) Then there’s the twentieth century Princess Kezia of Toro, later the Queen. (Yes, Toro is a lawnmower. Turns out it is also a traditional kingdom within modern day Uganda. Who knew?)

Keziah has never ranked in the US Top 1000, but a related name has fared well in recent years. Contracted, two-syllable form Keshia or Keisha became a popular choice for African American parents in the 1970s. Keisha, the most common spelling, ranked from 1967 through 1998. The elaboration Lakeisha also appeared in the Top 1000 from 1972 until 1993.

Two young actresses wear the name:

Keshia Knight-Pullman rocketed to fame as Rudy, the youngest of The Cosby Show’s Huxtable clan. The name rose with her;

Then there’s Oscar-nominated child actress Keisha Castle-Hughes. The New Zealander is now semi-retired from acting and mom to Felicity-Amore.

But most Keishas are twenty-something, if not thirty-something. Today, she sounds rather dated. (Even masculine variant Keyshawn is on the decline.0

There’s also Kizzy, a diminutive for all the Keziah-related names. Alex Haley used the name for a character in Roots. Kizzy debuting at a dizzying #223 in 1977, but was out of the US Top 1000 by 1979. Today, with the Roots reference far less familiar, she sounds too lightweight to stand on her own.

Which brings us back to Keziah. Closer to her original form, she sounds unexpected and intriguing. Job’s daughters were considered virtuous and lovely – there’s no downside to this Biblical pick. Besides Kizzy, Kes could serve as an appealing short form.

If Old Testament names are your style, she’s certainly one to consider.

Looking for something more feminine than cowgirl Cassidy, but less elaborate than the tragic Cassand

Looking for something more feminine than cowgirl Cassidy, but less elaborate than the tragic Cassandra? Here’s a nature name that just might suit.

Thanks to Laney for suggesting Cassia as Name of the Day.

First off, the Cass- family is made up of completely unrelated names, though two of them rose together in recent years. The Greek Cassandra, she of ancient myth, peaked at #49 in 1990 and stands at #284 today. The Gaelic surname Cassidy peaked at #99 in 1999, a few years after morning television’s Kathy Lee chose the appellation for Cody’s little sister. Today, she’s #228.

Cassia herself can claim at least three derivations, and just as many pronunciations. There’s:

KAH shah;

KAH see uh;

kah SEE uh.

Parents choosing Cassia circa 2009 are probably thinking of the nature name. She’s more subtle than Willow or Sage. She’s less common, too – Cassia has never appeared in the US Top 1000.

Cassia cinnamon is an evergreen found in the Far East. The bark and buds alike are used as a spice. Technically, cassia is not true cinnamon. (That’s cinnamomum verum - also an evergreen.) But most of the cinnamon you’ll find in the US is actually cassia. (The good stuff is more readily available in Europe.)

Still, cassia is no fraud. She’s preferred for some recipes, where true cinnamon is a notch too sweet. And she’s just as ancient – Moses used cinnamon and cassia, as well as other spices, to anoint the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament. Job’s daughter was called Keziah – a Hebrew variant of cassia. (Some have speculated that modern American names like Keisha are derived from Keziah.)

The Chinese knew about cassia, too – as did the Ancient Greeks. In myth, it was one of the phoenix’s preferred materials for nest-building. And while two bucks will buy you a Cinnabon at any shopping mall today, back in Rome, cassia was pricey stuff. Ancient cookbooks mention it, as do temple rituals and medical guides.

But if Cassia’s status as an also-ran to cinnamon makes you nervous, there are two other derivations for the name:

The Cassius family was a big deal in Ancient Rome. The Via Cassia was a significant part of the Roman road system; members of the family founded the city we now know as Lisbon. Saints wore the name, as did an American abolitionist – which is how boxer Cassius Clay ended up with the name he’d eventually shed to become known as Muhammad Ali;

Spelled Kasia, it is the Polish equivalent of Kate – a diminutive of Katarzyna. Head to Warsaw or Gdansk, and you’ll meet plenty of women wearing the name.

There’s also a county in Idaho known as Cassia, named after the Cassia Creek. The creek, in turn, is thought to be named after James John Cazier, an early settler, or possibly the term cajeaux, described as a “peasant French” term for raft.

Overall, Cassia is an appealing rarity. She’s a possible short form for Cassandra or Katherine, but stands well on her own. Sassy nickname option Cassie makes her wearable for a child. She offers a nice balance of standing out and fitting in, too.

i just don’t know how many times i fall, but i remember how many times God never stand straight as when he stoop then took the fall, and that was only once, every time when i fall. the sweetest surrender of all was being empty in submitting him my all, just to make me filled with His presence. i believe, His mercy calls me when I’m faraway from Him…it’s just sometimes i never learn how to listen to it carefully. i know i would stumble and i see it with my own strength but i am not when His eyes over me watching. i don’t have to learn how to question when all answers are here spoken but only ask for direction to where His hands carry me. i told Him bout my mistakes before. i expected circumstances after all, and yes there were burdens and circumstances He placed on me but it turned out to be blessing after i accepted it and trusting His ways. and the great change that took place FROM THE INSIDE OUT OF MY VERY SOUL.

In my heart, in my soul, Lord I give you control
Consume me from the inside out Lord
Let justice and praise become my embrace
To love You from the inside out

Your will above all else, my purpose remains
The art of losing myself in bringing you praise

Everlasting, Your light will shine when all else fades
Never ending, Your glory goes beyond all fame
In my heart, in my soul, Lord I give you control
Consume me from the inside out Lord
Let justice and praise become my embrace
To love You from the inside out

Chorus 2x
Everlasting, Your light will shine when all else fades
Never ending, Your glory goes beyond all fame
And the cry of my heart is to bring You praise
From the inside out Lord, my soul cries out

Well friends, it’s my shameful week of excitement… my daughter turns 1 in about 50 minutes. Can’t believe it. Today, Ezra and I dropped Natalie off at a group thing she does every Tuesday, and took Keziah to the mall to pick out a new doll. Ezra pulled a few off the shelf for her, and she screamed with excitement at each one. We finally nailed it down to one, and she clung to the box all the way to the cashier! The mall excitement begins… and she’s not even 1 yet!!!

Zi Pie… we love you babe. You’re precious and beautiful. This has been the fullest year of all our lives cus you’ve become an intrigal part of it (I’ll explain that word in a few years . Here’s to another awesome year sweet pea. Daddy loves you.

Last night there was a concert held in our church, featuring a local choir called His Sounds for the project of the UMYAFs (United Methodist Young Adults Fellowship). We, the youth, went early as each of us have different tasks–audio, lighting, video, ushers, prayers, visuals etc.

My task goes along with pianist Joshua, and we'll be handling the children's solo performance in the intermissions that night.

This is Ruth, one of the kids who will sing, while we are at the office and she was dreadfully nervous, but then again Ate Grace (our deaconess), Kuya Melvin (her husband) and I (the ate) just joked around so she forgot all about it for a moment. We practiced her song last saturday, so there's nothing to fear about, I said.

And so it started.

Sorry, I was in the front, so I didn't get a good view of the whole choir and the background (Hopefully Moe did, and it'll be better if the video comes out) The choir was amazing! His Sounds is an all-Chrisian choir, and they sing inspiring music. It's their way of evangelism, I think, and music works well in the hearts of people, especially if it beautifully done. They first sang 5 songs…and then the children's intermission.

Loved the lyrics. The song is very simple but true.
"Trust, trust in the Lord,
Lean not on your own understanding
In all of your ways acknowledge Him…
He'll make your paths straight."

And so goes our kiddy singers-in-the-making. I had my fingers crossed everytime they try to reach the hight notes (which is really good, but with more practice they can get better next time, hehe)

But something that's not to be missed in the concert is the youth's own representative–Mico. Mico is a soprano, she came from a family of singers (and her uncle Kuya Kenneth is a member of His Sounds choir), currently a Praise and Worship song leader and a violinist. She sang "The Light of a Million Mornings".

And everyone was like holding on to their seats, amazed at how such a young kid [15] would dare take on a high-pitched song. But she sang it with a true Suprano grace; not only her voice is beautiful, but the words are really amazing…

"A light of a million mornings filled my heart
A sound of a million angels sang my song
The warmth of Your love, so tender
Touched my life, and suddenly
A light of a million mornings dawned in me."

I wonder when can I write lyrics as beautiful as this?

The whole concert was marvelous, I was enjoying the heart-felt songs and the spritely melodies, everyone would be nodding their heads to an energetic a capella then calms down to a piano led ensemble. Heartfelt, that's all I can say, especially when they sang Filipino contemporaries like Sa Yapak Mo (in Your Footsteps) and classics, like Somebody is Praying for me. This experience is very refreshing, like taking a break from the noisy world and get back to hear wonderful songs of inspiration. I do feel energized, hope everyone who watched are too. Let's not forget…

To God: Please bless the choir, their wonderful voices, the songs they will sing, their families, their jobs, their lives, and the lives of all the people they will sing to. May they continue to glorify You, and may it be so. Amen

Read Job 42:1-17.

[Stuff we're skipping:

* God gives Job a whole lot more questions that He knows he can't answer. Finally Job says he'll stay quiet. God challenges Job even more just to bring home His point.]

1. Job basically says that he knows God can do anything, and he’s the guy who’s talking without knowledge here. So far, a humble confession.
2. Job says that he feels dumb because, before all he knew about God was what was told to him; but, now that he has seen God, he feels really dumb for questioning him like he did. Is there a difference between questioning God and wondering what He’s up to?
3. Job’s friends aren’t spared from God’s anger. Not only that, they are supposed to make sacrifices for Job to bless them. In other words, Job wasn’t completely right; but he was a whole lot more right than you quacks!
4. He got twice what he once had back. Amazing. That’s cool for donkeys and camels, but do you still feel bad that his original kids died?
5. All of Job’s family rallied around him. That’s nice.
6. Job went on to have three beautiful daughters (I guess the other three weren’t that great?). And one, the kids of Keziah and Keren-happuch had an Aunt Jemimah. She made really nice syrup. It’s interesting that it says that Job gave his daugters the same inheritance as her brothers. This was totally against the culture of the time. Why do you think he did that?
7. I like Job.
