What are you thankful for?

I’m thankful for the fact that this year, Muslims are given an opportunity to be way more thankful to Allah on this American holiday. It just so happens the 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah, referred to as the day of ‘Arafat, is the same day as Thanksgiving. It’s a blessed day where fasting is highly recommended.

Abu Qatadah reports the Prophet (may Allah’s Blessings and Peace be upon him) as saying:
“Fasting the Day of Arafat will be credited by Allah with forgiving one’s sins of the previous year and the coming year.”

I’m thankful to Allah for the enormous reward given for fasting on this day. Though, the irony of this year’s timing is quite hilarious, but also something to think about. My friend Abdullah, from Orlando, posted this interesting thought on Facebook:

So true.

A Muslim fasts in order to obey his/her Lord, and to appreciate what s/he has been given. It applies two very important concepts in Islam:

1. Sabr – the patience to deal with not eating or drinking from sunup to sundown, as well as refraining from vulgar speech, anger, and relations.

2. Shukr – thankfulness for the food, drink, and the other blessings that Allah bestowed on you.

The American way of celebrating is to cook a large meal (eating much of the day) for dinner where all the family comes together to eat. The Muslims stay away from even water all day, until the night when they can really “say grace” (i.e. Bismillah wa ‘ala barakatillah) and appreciate the meal before them (whether it’s large or small).

Thanksgiving is a beautiful holiday with honorable values embedded in it such as thankfulness (obviously) and kinship.

But the truth is, who’s really going to be celebrating Thanksgiving correctly? The Americans, or the Muslims (from America and even in foreign countries).

Keep in mind that this day upon us is here to serve a purpose and send one message: Allah is Dhul-Jalali-wal-Ikraam (translated as the Lord of Majesty and Generosity).

One day. One message. Even though it technically is two different ‘holidays’.

Enjoy this day, and try to remember about turkey!

UPPER DIR, Paquistão, 23 de novembro de 2009 (BosNewsLife) – um comerciante que vendia CDs na província noroeste da fronteira do Paquistão com o Afeganistão continuam em internado em estado crítico, depois que supostos militantes muçulmanos explodiram sua loja por que ela tinha à venda um filme sobre Jesus e outros filmes cristãos.

“Treze lojas vizinhas foram também parcialmente destruídas” durante a explosão de bomba no Centro Comercial Saleem, situado no bairro de Upper Dir District da cidade de Kas, disse o comerciante Muhammad Taos Khan que concedeu uma entrevista no hospital.

O Sr. Khan, 41 anos, disse que uma criança lhe deu uma carta ameaçadora cerca de 30 minutos antes da explosão no dia 11 de novembro de 2009. Ele disse que inicialmente “sacudiu sua cabeça e riu da carta”, mas logo ficou “extremamente impressionado” ao notar que a criança – um menino – estava olhando para ele com ódio nos olhos. “Quando eu tentei conversar com ele, ele correu e desapareceu entre as pessoas que estavam na rua”, disse Khan.

“É evidente pelo teor ameaçador da carta que eu fui atacado por vender o filme Jesus (sobre a vida, morte e ressurreição de Jesus Cristo) dublado nos idiomas Pashto e Urdu, bem como filmes muçulmanos e cristãos sobre (os personagens bíblicos) Abraão, Isaque e Adão e Eva. Nós temos muitos desses filmes em CDs”, disse ele.

A polícia paquistanesa e Khan ligaram a bomba ao grupo “Ideological Supremacy to Uphold Islam in the World” (Supremacismo Ideológico para Patrocinar o Islã no Mundo), um dos vários grupos que lutam para estabelecer um governo radical muçulmano e aplicar a lei Sharia muçulmana naquela província do Paquistão.

Não houve confirmação se o grupo muçulmano assumiu a responsabilidade do atentado a bomba e nenhuma prisão foi informada.

“Alá é grande e viva o Islã”, dizia a carta mostrada para a agência de notícias BosNewsLife. A carta também incluía slogans tais como “Morte aos EUA, aos Cristãos e todos os Judeus do Mundo”.

O comerciante Khan disse que a carta também acusava os comerciantes de vender CDs que “propagavam a vulgaridade na sociedade paquistanesa”. Você “não apenas vê os filmes sobre os profetas, mas também os aluga para o povo…”.

Khan disse que a carta também exigia que ele e outros comerciantes “em vez de atacar os valores muçulmanos deviam ensinar o Alcorão” considerado um livro sagrado pelos muçulmanos “para as crianças”.

Ele e outros comerciantes também foram “amaldiçoados” na carta. “Eles vão ir todos para o inferno e merecem o castigo divino…pelas ordens de Alá Todo Poderoso”, adicionava a carta mostrada à agência de notícias BosNewsLife.

According to various news sources Amir Khan has expressed a desire to fight Manny Pacquiao after his first WBA Light Welterweight Title defence against Dmitriy Salita.  While that does sound like a mouth-watering clash between ‘young lion’ and ‘old lion’ in Khans own words the reality is that it would be the relative rookie taking on the seasoned professional – not to mention one of the best boxers of this generation.

Khan's 'glass jaw' is his biggest weakness

Therein lies the problem for Khan, he is still a rookie professional boxer.  Yes, he is a champion and has picked up some impressive wins en route to the title, but each fight was against vastly inferior opposition excluding Breidis Prescott – who knocked him out in 54 seconds.  The fact is it’s far, far too early in his young career to even be thinking about taking on a man of Pacquiao’s calibre in my opinion.  He also mentioned a potential fight with fellow Brit Ricky Hatton, but despite his fall from grace in recent years the two are still worlds apart.

In a fight against either Pacquiao or Hatton not only would Khan’s relative inexperience let him down but also what’s known as his ‘glass jaw.’  In case you hadn’t guessed that means he has an incredibly weak chin, and naturally taking blows to that area of the body happens frequently in a boxing match.  Both of the veterans he one day plans to fight would have no trouble exploiting his weaknesses and beating him with relative ease, other big names in his weight class like Juan Manuel Marquez and Floyd Mayweather would do the same as well.  Amir Khan needs to work on his defensive skills before challenging the big boys of boxing as well as get a lot more wins under his belt.  The guy is only 22 and has had as many fights in his pro career, whereas Hatton has 47 and Pacquiao has 55. He’ll need to notch up at least another eight wins or so (against better opposition than he’s faced so far) for me to take his challenge seriously, there’s no denying he’s a good boxer with a great future ahead of him but it’s simply far too soon to be thinking about challenging Manny Pacquiao.

I attended the “Seerah: The Sheperd’s Path” course these past two weekends, from Al-Maghrib Instiute taught by Shaykh Abdul-Bary Yahya.

One of the best fun facts (I guess it could be a GEM (Genuinely Enlightenng Moment)) that I’d learned this weekend deals with Star Wars.

In the battle of Badr, in the Seerah (life of the Prophet Muhammad salallahu ‘alayhi wasallam (upon him be peace)), there were about 300 Muslims against 1,000 of the Makkans that expelled them. The Muslims had two horses, while the non-Muslims had hundreds of them. The odds were obviously against the Muslims.

However, in these battles, Allah would send the angels to help, in the same numbers as the non-Muslims, so He sent 1,000 angels to help the Muslims. So, no matter what, the Muslims are never outnumbered (with the exception of Uhud). The angels fought, even though no one could see them. A Muslim man would raise his sword, and find the enemy already defeated, because the angel had already done it.

They even, after the battle, could tell who was killed by an angel, and who was killed by a human. The people killed by angels had a very, very clean cut, and a little burn mark left.

Years and years later, the Shaykh said he saw a documentary of the director of Star Wars. The director, when developing the concept of the movie, turned to many different religious sources for ideas (Buddhism, Scientology, Christianity, Islam, etc.). He read about these angels that aided the Muslims. And he decided that he wants to make a sword like the swords of these angels of Allah, the clean, clean cut sword that would sometimes burn people. Thus, the light saber was created.

(By the way, don’t take any of this out of context, there were reasons and causes of war during the Prophet’s time, do NOT take my post as a fully sound source, because it’s not. A recommended book to learn more about the Seerah is Ar-Raheeq al-Makhtum, The Sealed Nectar).

So, naturally I became interested. (When I hear that a feature film which has gone through so much success is getting ideas from Islam, I want to know more!)

Basically, I found a great article, written by a Muslim, that cites a lot of sources on the role of Islam in the movie. Even the Jedi’s lifestyle is very similar to Islam. (I mean, long beards and thawbs with hoods, what do you expect?).

So, Islam is truly the best way of life, for all times, and all peoples. It’s all around us, even when we don’t know. So, when we learn more about Islam, we look at things in a different way, from an Islamic perspective. Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah) for that.

With the success of J.J. Abram’s take on the Star Trek franchise, it was only a matter of time until the rumor mill would begin churning away. I’m just surprised it took this long for anything to come up again.

According to CommingSoon.net, Nestor Carbonell has been tapped to play the infamous Star Trek villain, Khan.

Daniel Day-Lewis version 2, much?

Both CommingSoon.net and Empire Movies pointed out that casting Carbonell as Khan would make perfect sense since he resembles a young Ricardo Montalban, the original Khan, and that Carbonell works closely with J.J. Abrams since he plays Richard Alpert on Abram’s show, Lost.

However, rumor control agent Anthony Pascale, over at TrekMovie, claims a trusted source says that “Carbonell being on some sort of short list is ‘total BS.’” My gut tells me to believe the people over at TrekMovie, since Star Trek is their biznazz – that was until I read this. Pascale mentions that “the only name that members of the Trek ‘Supreme Court’ have discussed as a possible Khan is Javier Bardem…”

Now, I don’t know about you, but the only way I’m letting Bardem play Khan is if he was in character as Anton Chigurh. Imagining Chris Pine yell “KHAAAN!” to that face makes my heart happy.

Depois do lançamento do DVD e Blu-ray de Star Trek, o que todo mundo quer saber é sobre a aguardada continuação. O mais provável tantos pelos boatos, quanto pelas entrevistas do diretor J.J. Abrams e dos roteiristas, é que o clássico personagem Khan seja o vilão do filme.

Segundo o site ComingSoon, Abrams já teria um nome para o papel, seria o ator Nestor Carbonell, que já trabalhou com o diretor e os roteiristas em Lost, no misterioso papel de Richard Alpert.

Sou completamente a favor de Kahn aparecer em Star Trek 2, o personagem é o melhor vilão da franquia, sua presença foi marcante tanto na série quanto no cinema em Jornada nas Estrelas: A Ira de Khan de 1982, onde foi interpretado pelo ator Ricardo Montalban.

The “Star Trek” DVD/Blu-ray release party was at the Griffith Observatory in LA. The sequel is still being written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman so nothing is known regarding plot and what characters will be in it. J J Abrams still isn’t sure if he will direct it.

Fans seem to want Khan to be in it, but I’m not sure if I do. I think they should go with an all new story with new villains. However, if Khan is in it then Nestor Carbonell (the awesome Bat Manuel in The Tick, the mayor in The Dark Knight and Richard Alpert in Lost) appears to be the favourite to play him.

Most of the cast attended the Blu-Ray launch party and MovieWeb managed to speak to Nimoy (Spock) and Bruce Greenwood (Captain Pike).

First up was Leonard Nimoy:

“I am very happy with the direction J.J. took this particular film. He has a great cast, and he’s in great shape. I was fortunate enough to work with an exceptional group of actors, and the fans really seemed to enjoy the film.” Nimoy went on to say, “I don’t think there is room for me to return in a sequel. I don’t think they need me. I am happy to see Zachary continue on with the role. I don’t believe a second film would benefit from me being a part of it. If J.J. asked me to come back, I would consider it. But I don’t think it is necessary, nor do I think that is part of J.J.’s plan.”

“I know they’re writing the film right now, but I’m not sure if we’ll see Pike or not,” Greenwood said. “He was mainly there to bring Kirk aboard the Enterprise and it’s hard to say if he’ll be popping up in the sequel.”

Greenwood also spoke about his history with the series and what he learned from his predecessors who played Captain Pike in the past.

“I did go back and look at Jeffrey Hunter’s performance in the original series,” Greenwood said about his preperation for the role. “This is obviously a very different kind of Star Trek, but it was nice to see the history of the character unfold.”

Star Trek Fans aufgepasst! Nach dem gigantischen Erfolg des 11. Teils der Star Trek Saga – eigentlich des 1. Wiederbelebungsteils – wird bereits an einer Fortsetzung gearbeitet. Star Trek 2 soll 2012 in die Kinos kommen und wird wohl auch diesen Namen tragen, denn die Zählweise wird korrigiert, nach den Ereignissen des ersten Teils befinden wir uns ja auch quasi kurz vor der Fernsehserie…

Egal wie der Film auch heißen mag, J. J. Abrams soll angeblich wieder die Regie führen. Die Drehbücher, die eigentlich bereits Weihnachten im Kasten sein sollten, verzögern sich leider – so dass erst Mitte 2010 mit einem Drehstart gerechnet werden kann. Die nun neu eingeführte Crew soll komplett wieder mitspielen und hat bereits die Vorverträge unterzeichnet. Noch offen ist, er dementiert nicht, ist der originale Spock noch einmal mitspielen wird – Leonard Nimoy zumindest meint, die Rolle sei ausgespielt und der Übergang zur neuen Serie geschafft. Laut einem US-Interview mit Abrams jedoch, kann er sich weitere Zeitreisen und damit Begegnungen auf alten Enterprise-Folgen (Kirk, Spock, Khan) durchaus vorstellen… Für Khan ist übrigens Lost-Star Nestor Carbonell im Gespräch.

Letztlich glaub ich: Viel Spekulation! Der jetzt auf DVD erschienene Star Trek (Teil 11) ist schließlich auch ganz anders geworden, als man ursprünglich gedacht hat. Witzig, ursprünglich und näher am Original. Hoffentlich schafft das Abrams mit Teil 2 (12) ebenfalls!

Arguably one of the biggest fanboy faves in the Star Trek Universe… Khan Noonien Singh… stabbed at us with hell’s heart in the old Star Trek series, and later in Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan.

Played so perfectly over the top by Ricardo Montalban, it’s hard to think of anyone EVER taking up the mantle of Khan in the newly minted J.J. Abrams Star Trek universe. However, the moment a sequel was mentioned, the internet went a flutter. Will we would see our lovable, tortured Spaniard?

“Dealing with Khan would certainly be a challenge, but we had an equal challenge in finding our crew of the Enterprise.” – J.J. Abrams

Although nothing has been confirmed, I think it’s a pretty obvious that we are going to see Khan in HD and covered in lens flares.

The question NOW is, “Who do WE think is capable and worthy enough to play him?”

Mainly because, (although I have no way of confirming it,) I have heard from reliable sources that Armchairmogul.net is where J.J. Abrams gets most of his ideas.

One thing is for sure, no matter who you pick. Shatner is not going to be happy.

P.S. I have just as hard of problem doing this, as I would having to recast Terrance Stamps’ Zod. It’s almost like they don’t exist as actors, the only exist in these roles…what say you?

In preparation for my purchase of J.J. Abrams’s reboot of Star Trek on blu-ray, I’m revisiting the film that made all of the other sequels possible: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. I try to watch this film once every couple of years, and it never disappoints.  I came late to the Star Trek party overall, not being a fan of the original series and only being a casual watcher of TNG in the 90’s.  My mom is the Trekker of the family.  Back when mail order VHS tapes were the rage, my mom bought every Star Trek episode that Time Life offered.  They’re still piled in her closet to this day.  I watched Star Trek: Generations and Star Trek: First Contact when I was in junior high, and at the time it was only because I liked sci-fi action.  I followed the TNG films through the years.  I didn’t think Insurrection was that bad.  The film just felt more like a long episode of the TV series.  Nemesis was a good try, and there are some very good acting moments, but it just felt like another TNG series finale.

It’s 2002, and I had pretty much given up on the Trek.  When First Contact premiered on Special Edition DVD, I went to Best Buy to pick it up, and I also saw that Paramount had released a Special Edition of Star Trek II.  All of my trekker friends insisted that it was the best film in the series and that I was crazy for never seeing it.  I don’t like to be looked at as crazy after all, so I picked it up on a lark.  I don’t usually buy DVDs sight unseen, but I had a good feeling.  Thank Starfleet that my feeling was right, because right away I was hooked.  I was 21, yet I felt like a 10 year-old again.  Every room on the Starship Enterprise looked like a swinging 70’s bachelor pad strapped to a warp drive.  The early special effects were bright and interesting.  The acting was classic.  Nimoy may have been the talent, but Shatner was the charm.  James Horner’s score was lively and made the scenes even more fun.  The action sequences were large and reckless, yet had the timeless poise of an old sea epic.  If Shakespeare were alive, he might have been a script doctor on this film, especially for Khan’s dialogue.

All in all, Star Trek II renewed and expanded my love for the Star Trek series.  Every time I come across the original series on TV, I watch at least a few minutes if not the entire episode.  TNG is a bit more involved, and I’ll only watch it if I catch it at the very beginning.  In addition to the TNG films, I’ve now seen Star Treks II, IV, and VI.  I’m planning on writing a review of the odd numbered Trek films very soon.  I’m a little afraid, since I’ve heard less than positive things about them, but that’s what makes writing about them so fun.
