Getting dissed because you are Punjabi is passe. Bengalis specialise in it--- they take pot shots at most other communities but Punjabis are reserved alltime favourites. The new filmmaker, Delhi resident Mr Bannerjee who made Oye Lucky as well as Khosla ka Ghosla, has gone home romping riding on caricaturing Punjabiyat. Would any Bengali suffer the same with eyes crinkling over with laughter? Ne.So what's with the Punjabis? After Khushwant Singh there is no real intellectual who is mainstream enough to be a cultural icon.Is it because the culture has remained wedded to antiquated customs?Like feoticide. There is a general pride in--- we are like this only. Punjabi films are so basic, maybe because the concerns never go beyond marriage, like the average fifties-sixties Hindi film. There is a clear difference in the preoccupations of the southern states and Punjabi aspiration. Owning money canot be a cultural meme for the long term. There is no desire to contribute to cultural /intellectual spheres on a nationl or international domain. There is no new experimentation sociologically to even wanting to belong to a cultural movement anywhere. Takers are few for Punjabi poetry. Is Punjabiyat just philistinism?Just look at the Punjabi channels:low grade all round the day monotonous immoderately unmusical songs. Or the religious preachings. Really garish generally subhuman anchors whereas there are 4-5 Telugu news channels. Why? I don't know why the intellectual tradition of Lahore vapourized in post partition Punjab? Maybe someone can enlighten and also take up the cause of the Punjabis so that they don't appear in the next 50 years as foul mouthed land grabbing louts in cultural representations.
