Part three of our November roundup looks at debuts from Norwich indie-pop upstarts The Kabeedies, US sensation Kid Sister and the homemade charms of Lady Lazarus.

Norwich’s keenest The Kabeedies bounced onto our radar with a triumphant performance at Glastonbury 2008, and they’ve been picking up momentum ever since. Following on from an enjoyable pair of EPs comes the irrepressible band’s debut full-length, appropriately named Rumpus. A jauntily pop, heels-in-the-air, loop-the-flipping-loop of an album, it successfully marryies compulsively danceable rhythms with vocal melodies so infectious the government will no doubt soon be putting up posters in bathrooms telling you how to wash your ears.

Lead single ‘Petits Filous’ is a quirkily lovable bashabout with all the hallmarks of classic tweee indie: male/female dual vocal, speak-singing in the verses, ‘80s pop culture references and earnest similes a-go-go. Not that the song isn’t greater than the sum of these parts, but those of you who feel like whipping out your indie bingo cards, like the rest of us, will not be disappointed. There are stronger tracks on the album though – the athletically jangly ‘Lovers Ought To’, for instance, or the No Doubt-esque sunshine pop of ‘Comic Splendour’ – so anyone who finds their interest piqued by ‘Petits Filous’ should find that there are plenty more sweet treats in store.

After much stalling, it seems that all the behind the scenes creative tweaking has paid off for Chicago native Kid Sister, aka Melisa Young. Continuing on from the bright, buzzing promise of 2007’s ‘Pro Nails’ single, which featured her part-time mentor Kanye West, Ultraviolet includes production from a slew of respected studio including Sinden, XXXChange, Herve, Yuksek and, most predominantly, her boyfriend A-Trak. Bridging slick pop with dizzy rap and grimey, expert electro, the tracks melt seamlessly into each other like one big laser-bright party. Every track is club worthy, with catchy hooks and feelgood vibes reverberating over slick beats and big sounds.

Where lesser rappers might struggle, Young’s tight rhymes and rapid-fire flow show she’s more than capable of keeping pace. She also keeps true to her girl-next-door moniker, avoiding the easy route of sexploitation female MCs. As she raps on the sweetly down to earth ‘Let Me Bang’, “I’m trying to rap more about some normal girlie shit rather than bump and grind”. From the retro rap feel of ‘Life On TV’ and the ‘80s pop of ‘Daydreaming’ to the party crunk of ‘Step’ (guest starring Estelle) and the soca-charged electro of ‘Switchboard’, this is a super fun, solidly crafted debut.

California’s Melissa Ann Sweat hasn’t long considered herself a musician but she’s been involved in artistic pursuits – writing, drawing and painting – since childhood. Playing keyboard, glockenspiel, accordion and ‘found instruments’ on this debut EP from her Sylvia Plath-derived alter ego, her musical naivety is well disguised. Sweat makes a convincing stab at Karen O channelling PJ Harvey, resulting in a consistently interesting and complex collection of songs.

Relationships pepper this personal record, with Sweat looking for a lover on ‘Bones’ and waving goodbye to another on ‘My Dear Man (Unrequited)’. There’s no hint of sentimentality though, more thoughtful introspection and an appetite for all life has to offer, both good and bad. Highlight ‘Master & Servant’ is not the Depeche Mode cover you might expect but a simultaneously charming yet terrifying original (“Lately the devil’s been talking to me / he’s been saying I’m some woman I’d rather not be”). The minimal arrangements and work-in-progress production affords a sense of immediacy that might have been lost beneath a studio polish. While at times the lo-fi sound can get frustrating, Sweat paces through these seven tracks in under 15 minutes and all are release-worthy compositions.

Chicago’s Kid Sister finally saw the release of her debut album, Ultraviolet this week. The single Right Hand Hi has been out for awhile and is very, very catchy.

She’s playing with Flosstradamus (featuring her brother and DJ J2K) at House of Blues the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 25). The video is from a show in Los Angeles last month.

I literally just got back from seeing Kid Sister at MTV, it was a great midday break and worth not taking a lunch break at work for! KS played a few songs from her fantastic debut album Ultraviolet (out now!) including banging party anthems Right Hand Hi, Big N Bad and Pro Nails (sans Kanye.)

She was accompanied by two masked dancers and sported an awesome bedazzled Aaliyah T-shirt for the set. Unfortunately I will not be in town for her set at Webster Hall next friday with Flosstradamus but make sure you are, definitely will not be dissapointed! Make sure you pick up Ultraviolet ASAP, it’s an absolute must for any party! Spotted at the show: Maggie Horn.

when i sat down to think about this week’s top 5, it was so painfully obvious who i would feature with tuesday’s release of kid sister’s CD, ultraviolet. ahhh, yes: women who rap. women who produce damn good beats. bad ass women who do their thang (yes, “thang”) without a care.

This past August I was pumped for seeing A-Trak side by side M.I.A.’s bestie, Rye-Rye, but the girl had to go and get prego and cancelled her remaining tour dates. As I pondered who would make a great sub for the act I naturally considered Kid Sister, aka Melisa Young, ironically, the elder sister of J2K, aka Josh Young, one half of Chicago based duo, Flosstradamus. Alas, A-Track, little brother of Dave 1, aka David Macklovitch, vocals and guitarist of MTL based electrofunk duo, Chromeo, dawned the stage alone. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing the MTL native turned international sensation and exclusive Kanye DJ, can attest to the fact that the night was nevertheless something to bewonder (Aside from the fact that there was no air conditioning in the subterranean hot-box). Still, the whole experience left me wondering when the heck we would see the likes of kid Sis again. Her collabs with Tittsworth (who’s recent mix is a little bit of disappointment, if i may use this opportunity to say so) and Loudmouth West offered the Illinois born lyricist critical acclaim and made her into a near instant star in the minds of hipsters and collar-poppers alike.

Well she’s back. This past Tuesday, too much anticipation, kid Sister released Ultraviolet. The album contains past jams like Pro Nails and Control, and opens with the recent single, Right Hand Hi. I’m not sure Right Hand Hi will live up to the successes of the aforementioned hits but it is sure going to get more that your ear-drums shaking.

Kid Sister’s debut album, Ultraviolet, finally came out yesterday after a couple years of hype. I need not get into the whole drama, cuz many others have already done so. The point is, 2 years ago we heard/were amused by the song “Pro Nails.” Kanye was slightly less ubiquitous then, so when he guested on that song, peeps’ ears perked up, and Kid Sister got a hometown boost from fellow Chicagoan Kanye.

I have just one thing to say to Ultraviolet’s haters: this album should be heard in the context of what we hear on the radio. The production sounds like it cost about a million dollars more than any Jay Sean/Jason DeRulo/Treyz Songs/Drake/whoevs ’90sesque club single. Defmute asked me, all concerned, “Are there Chris Brown synths?” This means: “How generic and cheap does her production sound?” My answer: Not bad. Heard on hi-def headphones, the opening eurodisco stomp of “Right Hand Hi” sounds pretty darn expensive.

True, Ultraviolet is not in league with genre-bending high-minded pop, a la Kanye or M.I.A. But let’s not punish this album for what it never tried to be. This album is a cheerful throwback, all ’80s neon and Bassment Party rap reminiscent of last year’s big shit The Cool Kids. This album is a more successful Santigold, because I am certain that no one, other than the critics who ludicrously endorsed her, actually listened to that album. I think people will listen to and enjoy Kid Sister–she’s goofy, she’s pretty, she raps about Payless and Bath & Body works (that is to say, she is humble), and she has some good producers. This album also taught me a couple things about dance genres, and though the experts might scoff, dudes, I don’t know what kind of manic tom makes good juke, and if I hear some distortion that reminds me of MSTRKRFT, I will be happy. Hence Kid Sister sounds like fun dance music to me.

Not all songs are solid gold, but I would say that 50% of the album is great, including “Right Hand Hi,” “Life on TV,” “Control,” “Get Fresh,” and “Switch Board.”

So check it out and stop hatin. And for god’s sake, Pfork, don’t say Sister’s rhymes remind you of “actors in teen movies rapping for laughs.” Maybe it’s cuz you haven’t heard a woman rapping and having fun at the same time… like, ever.
