Gisselle turned the big 6 this year. And sadly I had to go to work and wasn’t able to spend the whole day with her. Before I left for work, she got her Tinkerbell cake (which I ran around half a day trying to find the specific kit for the cake 2 days prior). She got here bday gifts and off to work I went. Seemed pretty stoked when I got home in the morning. Happy Birthday big girl!

It’s amazing how at the least time expected to ever be hit by inspiration, you’re hit smack in the face with it.

I was just hit with inspiration for a series, but something probably not expected from a person like myself. I already had ideas for characters in mind, so I just have to edit that a little bit and form the plot. The story will revolve around a troubled kid, who’s pretty much a “biker” (quotations because he’s not actually a biker; he just drives a motorcycle), going through the obstacles of life.

I swear, it’s not as cliche as it sounds. And no.. The characters aren’t stereotypes, either.

So, hopefully I can get that all worked out sooner or later.

My kids go through a box of fruitbars every two days. We should own freaking stock in fruitbars. They go with us everywhere- glovebox, diaper bags, in the basket under the stroller. While cleaning out my car yesterday I notivced that my daughter had been stashing them for a “rainy day” in the spot between the carseat and the seatbelt. There were fruitbars ground like a mushy paste into the carpet UNDER the floor mats. This is the price you pay for 30 seconds of fruitbar induced silence.

So T pulled my and Jo’s old Tinkertoys out of our study this weekend. He was all excited, pulls out a little instruction booklet from 1969 or something and points out something he wants me to make.

I was immediately plunged into a feeling I haven’t experienced in about 30 years, but now I can put words to it: what the HELL do you expect me to do with these sticks, anyway?!

Really. They publish a picture of a bunch of sticks stuck together with wooden hubs and tell you it’s an airplane. Um, no, that’s a bunch of sticks.

I did my best and tried to grow up and started poking sticks into hubs, and just like they did when I was a kid, you push one stick in and two others fall out. Five minutes later I was ready to break sticks and scream.

Really, this is weird. Tinkertoys? uh uh. Legos? yeah, kinda. Blocks? sure, okay. Train tracks? eh. But… coloring? YES! finger knitting? YES YES! More fiber arts? Let’s make a loom! Let’s wet felt some little felt balls! Want to paint? And can we play dollhouse? I still love playing dollhouse.

Lucky for me, Jo went upstairs and valiantly built a CRANE with MOVING PARTS AND EVERYTHING. And this morning T begged me to untie the knot so we could add other weights to the string for the crane to lift. And we did and then the crane just started to fall apart. And every time I stuck one stick back into its hub TWO MORE CAME OUT and soon that whole damn crane was lying in a heap on the floor.

I give up. I feel like I shouldn’t, but I am officially giving up on Tinkertoys. Someone else will have to tinker with him. Bad things will happen if I don’t keep away from them. I can feel it.

He wanted to do a lot but could not because there was hardly anything creative for him to do.

So he yelled.

At his friends, at his school and at his mom.

His relationship with everyone including his family members worsened with every tantrum of his. Only 11, he was already showing signs of strong rebellion.

And then he got a camera.

His life changed.

He took his camera and went out in the streets. He took pictures – scores of them - and marvelled at his shots. He loved the colors of the photos and the way everyday life got captured for posterity. He did not want to be disruptive anymore. He had a tool for creation and he was loving it.

His camera took him to places he always had hoped to go – Managua ( the capital city , 50 km from Granada), the mall, San Juna del Sur ( a beach town) and the Isletas ( little volcanic islands in the lake Nicaragua).

His camera brought cheer in his harassed mom’s heart. He had stopped yelling. He listened more and tried to help her at home. He stopped fighting with his classmates and attended school regularly.

For Empowerment International, he is one of the most dramatic success stories.

Alexander became a part of EI’s photography program in 2007 and has never looked back since. While in the program, he joined the photography teacher and the other students to several photography trips where he learned the importance of patience and focus. He has become empathetic, understanding and calm now.

He has learned how to take a good photo, what are the different positions for a photo, how to use the different camera functions like zoom, long sort and how to take a close up short. He even knows how to critique a photo.

In his words, ‘Now I am better behaved with my brothers and my mother. I help my mom by going to the market for her!’

His family, friends and EI staff are proud of him. But even more importantly, he is proud of himself.

The moniker of misunderstoodsunshinekid sounds like some teenage bubblegum nickname that reeks of ad

The moniker of misunderstoodsunshinekid sounds like some teenage bubblegum nickname that reeks of adolescence and youthfulness. And certainly not very appropriate for a man who turned 21 for the sixth time this year. There is, of course, a meaning behind this deliberate choice of words.

Coined towards the end of my time in Ngee Ann Polytechnic where I studied Mass Communication, it first appeared in the yearbook which was contributed by and distributed to every student in the cohort. The editorial team asked each of us for a photograph and three words that best described ourselves. Come to think of it, considering that I’ve not seen 90% of my school mates since we graduated, these three words would actually go a long way in helping us remember each other.

It was really amusing to see some of the entries. The more commonly used words were “Bubbly”, “Friendly”, “Outgoing”, “Sociable”, “Funny”, etcetera – basically words that were safe, correct and well, forgettable. There were some that went out of the box with “Nobody Knows Me”, “Damned I’m Good”, “Ahh Whatever Lah” and “I Am Indescribable”. But the one that tickled me most was “Humourous, Cheerful, Easygoing” and attached with the words was a really fierce, unfriendly and serious picture. Nice.

Without going into too much detail, here’s why I chose “Misunderstood Sunshine Kid”:

Misunderstood
Half my life I’ve been misunderstood for my intentions, choice of words and actions. I’d like to believe that it’s always been love-hate with me; people don’t really have a neutral feeling towards me. They either like me or dislike me. And because of this I almost always end up leaving either a great or a horrible first impression. As I age, I’ve learnt to deal with it by simply not bothering about it; I cannot please everyone, so I’ve learnt to stop having to justify or explain what I say or do. I’ve embraced this as a part of me and the only approval I seek would be that of God’s. I’ve learnt to take myself less seriously and not be so uptight about what people say or think about me. Yeah, I know this sounds very teenage/emo/angst, but hey, this term was coined when I was a 19-year-old teenager.

Sunshine
I’ve always been a positive and optimistic person and I think that it rubs off on the people that I interact with, especially with those in my sphere of influence. I’d like to I exude a “You can do it” vibe. On a side note, my heart goes out to pessimistic and negative people, but how they live their lives is their problem, not mine. I desire to be contented and always joyful. Another ethos which I live by is, “I could always be happier but I am situationally contented”. That was a phrase I coined together with PL some years ago. To an extent this word contradicts the former, but both somehow capture a key essence of my personality and character.

Kid
I’m always up to some mischief and I’ve always enjoyed being cheeky and naughty. There is a difference between being childish and childlike. I never want to lose the sense of wonder that children have. I always want to retain the kid in me, for the kid that I will have in future. I am confident that I will be a father with the “sparkle” in his eye. You know, kids are actually very sensitive and can detect sincerity from hypocrisy. I enjoy playing with kids and I think they (know it and) enjoy it too because they see it in my eyes – that I really want to play with them and I’m not afraid of embarrassing myself. I’ve always dreamt about being the father that my father never was to me. And for that to happen, I’ll always have that boyish playfulness hidden behind a now older and wiser head.

Each word could be an entry in itself so I’ll just leave it like that until I decide to elaborate further.

There are a lot of things that I really want to blog about right now. I even had my “topics

There are a lot of things that I really want to blog about right now. I even had my “topics” written so I won’t forget them. Unfortunately, I am still feeling a little tired from attending this morning’s event, the Orcom Convention in DLSU, which I’ll probably blog about, too. Instead, I opted to just open my Facebook account and back-read some posts. Upon opening, I immediately noticed the notifications. I checked them out, and learned that I was tagged by one of my friends. Curious that I am, I clicked on the link. It was a note, which I find really funny. That’s when I thought of just sharing that piece instead of what I originally have in mind.

80’s/90’s Baby Ka Ba?

1) Kilala mo sina Shaider, Bioman at Masked Rider Black

~ You probably remember these fictional characters. From what I can recall, they are just ordinary people who then become “robot-like” super heroes when the need arises. If you ask me, they all look the same to me, except that Masked Rider Black looks more like of a cockroach to me.

2) Kumakain ka ng Humpy Dumpy at Marie

~ I never liked any of those treats. Humpy Dumpy smells like, errr, “something”, and Marie is just too tasteless for me. But yeah, most of the time, these two were always included in my snack menu or in my baon menu.

3) Alam mo ang universal song na “U-WI-AN NA”

~ Who wouldn’t know the tune and the rhythm of this all time favorite battle cry every time the bell would signal the end of classes. One voice is all that is needed, and the rest of the class will follow. Soon, it’s a whole chorus, and that’s when the teacher will try to control us all. ;)

4) Nagsayaw ka ng Macarena

~ I never understood the song nor I can sing it. I can only remember the last part of its chorus, “Hey, Macarena!” Plus, I know I can dance it, too.

5) Alam mo ang meaning ng “Tympers”

~ I was always a street kid. I loved playing outside with my friends, whether it’s Sikyo, Taguan, Piko, Patintero, Ten-Twenty or what have you. Name it, I played it once; thus, I definitely, definitely know the meaning, by mind and by heart, of “Tympers!” :)

6) Alam mo ang importance ng “Period, kandado susi, no erase!”

~ Ever since I was a child, I have always engaged myself into any form of argumentations or childish debate. At the same time, I used to also demand and implement silly rules among my play mates. Well, I think we all have probably went through that stage. ) And with every such statement, my playmates and I usually end our speech with the lines mentioned above. I even remember it was a very powerful line, to the extent that no one, as in no one, was ever allowed to contest whoever threw that line.

7) Meron kang pencil case na maraming pindutan

~ Oh yes, I did have one. Not only does it had a lot of buttons, but it also had a “second floor”; meaning, an extra compartment. I even remember trying to persuade my mom so hard just so she can buy me that pencil case.;))

At higit sa lahat..

 Naniwala kang nanganganak ang kisses

rish as a kid. coz i can't find a photo of kisses, i'll just post my photo as a child

~ Crazy as it may sound, but yes, I used to think that these cuties can generate more “baby kisses”. I even had a special container for them with cottons, which I regularly change, too.

I know that most, if not all, of you guys who were born under the same years, can very much relate to what I posted. Sometimes, it’s just really fun going back to those days of innocence, when all that matters are simple things in life.
