I’ve wasted too much time trying to find something when I don’t know what I’m really looking for. I wish things could be clearer and more straight forward for me sometimes, well all the time. I don’t think that by me writing on this blog or whatever is really going to tell you or anyone what I’m really like, but I need to stop being sorry for myself.

… I know this doesn’t make any sense, but I hope that it will for me soon.

I intend this blog to be a book review blog. I know there are a million and one such sites out there

I intend this blog to be a book review blog. I know there are a million and one such sites out there that do the same thing. These reviews are merely my two cents.

I read a lot. My tastes very, but in the last year or two, Romance has been my primary genre, and Regency Romances my primary sub-genre. Today, I thought I’d make a list of some of my favorite Regency Romance authors and books.

Georgette Heyer — This goes without saying. No Regency Romance aficionado doesn’t like Georgette Heyer. She’s the cream of the crop. My favorites? Friday’s Child, April Lady, The Corinthian, These Old Shades, Devil’s Cub and her collection of short stories: Pistols for Two.

Joan Smith–Often referred to as the “Canadian Georgette Heyer”, Smith stands on her own two feet, without comparison. She’s funny and she simply got the period right. Personal favorites: Dame Durden’s Daughter, Winter Wedding, Aurora, Imprudent Lady. Joan Smith also wrote as Jennie Gallant.

Clare Darcy–Another author often compared to Heyer. My favorites are Victoire and Gwendolen.

Elizabeth Mansfield–Mansfield’s regencies are great. I especially liked Love Lessons.

Barbara Metzger–Metzger is the queen of funny regencies. Almost every one of her books is worth picking up for a chuckle or two. I especially enjoyed her earlier books: The Earl and the Heiress, Bething’s Folly, not to mention a few of the later ones, like Miss Westlake’s Windfall.

Elizabeth Kidd–I loved My Lord Guardian and A Hero for Antonia.

Margaret Evans Porter–Great, great author, scarcely heard of. Find Irish Autumn, Heiress of Adara and Sweet Lavender if you possibly can.

These are just some of my favorite authors. I have many others, I promise you, so check back.

At the 10:53 mark of the 3rd quarter from yesterday, November the 25th, Dallas Maverick’s win over the Houston Rockets, Jason Kidd passed to Rodrigue Beaubois for an alley-oop. That pass meant more than just two points, more than one assist for Kidd because with that dime, his 5th of the game at the time, he passed Mark Jackson for 2nd all time in assists with 10,335.

On a day where we saw one star get pushed out of the league because of his inability to adapt, Kidd once again stands his name in the history by reinventing himself. He is not the triple-double machine he once was but by being able to understand that time passes, Kidd extended his NBA career and remains helpful on the highest level.

Sha Money XL recently inked a multi-million dollar music and film distribution deal for his Dream Big Ventures imprint. One of the first artists he has signed is former Lil Wayne label mate and New Orleans native Kidd Kidd. This song and video justify Sha Money’s interest in Kidd Kidd as he kills this beat with ill wordplay.

I walk out of my condo’s front door, with joel, kidd rock and his manager walk in, with a sales lady, and I continue with joel to his car. I have made joel 45 minutes late already, “But kidd rock is walking into my building looking for a house”.
“Joel, I have to do something”.
Joel and I walk back into my building and go up to my 7th floor condo. Kidd is on the 8th floor looking at the best condo open for the market.
I stage joel at the elevator and I go into my house to look for my last biz card. I peak out, “Has the elevator moved?” Nope.
My last biz card was found and Joel and I were at the elevator door. “What are we waiting for?’
“Like clockwork, The elevator will go up, I will click the down button, and we will be in the elevator with Kidd Rock, in my house. But we are only going to wait 5 minutes.
Four minutes later the elevator warms up and goes up one floor. My heart rate escalates, but I keep it cool.
I hear the door open up a floor above mine ,”Like Clockwork” I mention to Joel again, and proceed to click the button to go down.
The elevator stopped and opened up to my floor and there was Kidd Rock, with his agent.
Joel and I went in.
I looked across at Kidd Rock and said, “We have mutual friends”.
“Oh really?”
“Yeah, Clay Patrick McBride. (kidd rocks prime photographer/awesome dude), We taught a workshop together in NY a few years back”.
Kidd looked at me with a smile because him and Clay are good friends.
The elevator was almost to the ground when I said, ” I actually shot your wedding too”.
Kidd looked at me and said ” That was a good time”.
“Yeah, I said, it peaked for me when I was hanging at a table with you and Bob Seager”.
He reached out his hand and introduced himself as Bob.
I am Stephen McGee, nice to meet you again. I said.
We walked out to the car and I asked him if I could give him my card. He said yes. I told him “I do music videos, well not really, I do documentaries, but you probably already have someone”.
“No we always are looking for local talent.”
“Well” I ended,” thanks for being such a advocate for Detroit”.
“No, Thank you,” He ended.

Behind Chris Paul’s 39 points and 7 assists, the Hornets found in key pieces key buckets on clutch moments.

Nowitzki was infective for the most part of the game. He scored only 12 on the night. Double teamed the whole game, Dirk’s presence opened up wide open outside shots for guys like Kidd, Barea and Terry which kept Dallas in the game until the beginning of the 4th quarter when they took the lead. On the defensive event, Dirk was even more frustrated. David West’s physically warn him out time and time again until the moment he fouled out with about 2 and a half minutes to go. By that point, Dallas had a lead because of the amazing performance of Terry who would eventually lose some key free throws in the end of the game that combined with Barea’s misses allowed the Hornets to tie the game.

For the Hornets it’s a great win but also a weird situation in which they may have to re-evaluate a couple of things. Chris Paul literally carried them on his back the whole game. On a night when Dallas seemed clearly tired because of the back-to-backs and did not play one of their best games, New Orleans never had a comfortable lead. Paul just played an as good as it gets game and the Hornets suffered a lot to take a warned out Mavericks to overtime. It was clear that the Mavericks kept hanging in there and because of the outside shooting and Dampier’s nice performance under the rim Dallas took the lead on the fourth. Paul then kept the Hornets on the game until Stojakovic hit the game tying 3 pointer and then on overtime David West showed up to play and the Hornets never looked back.

The lesson that New Orleans get from this game is that Paul needs to get more help if this team wants to go somewhere this season. West is a 2x All Star and an elite Forward but at some point he’s got do more than just score the basketball, he needs to be more involved the whole game because when he’s hitting shots, the Hornets’ chances to win are way better. Also Stojakovic can’t come off the bench if guys like Mou Peterson and Julian Wright will be on the starting lineup because their inability to hit shots turns them useless. Wouldn’t it be better if Paul penetrated and kicked to the outside to somebody who will most likely hit 6 out of 10 shots if wide opened?

Nowitzki is still the focus point of the Mavericks offense even when he’s not on a good night. He was double teamed so much that it opened space for other guys to produce. Terry got hot on the 4th when he started to work the 2 men game with Dirk. When Dirk wasn’t there, Dallas seemed weird, maybe without a suitable plan to a situation like that but they were still winning and holding a comfortable lead until the moment that they started missing free throws and that was the key moment when they lost the game.

On a head-to-head battle between Southwest divisional rivals and probably playoff contenders, the Hornets take the win but should be scratching their heads because on a night when the Mavericks didn’t play their best basketball, Chris Paul had absolutely no help for 90% of the game and carried the team on his back for New Orleans to win at home. It can’t be a good sign.

Backed by their second unit, the Mavericks rallied into the second quarter but are still down at halftime 50-48. Without Paul or West, the Hornets were unable to score and allowed Dallas to come back. Nowitzki has only six points at the half but his presence on the court draw double teams coverage which opened three pointers for Kidd, Barea and Terry. When Paul returned, his extra pass ability and huge 3 pointer in the end kept the Hornets on top.

New Orleans still lead this game but as Dirk starts to evolve his game, the question about how the Hornets score the basketball without Paul and West remains. At some point those guys will need to rest and that will be the point that Dallas will take the lead for good.

After the disappoint loss to the Denver Nuggets on last season’s Western Semi-Finals, it became clear that this generation of the Dallas Mavericks led by Dirk Nowitzki won’t get it done and the rebuild process seemed to be the most appropriate alternative however Mark Cuban disagrees with me and since he’s the one that matters, the Mavs decided to take a last shot of what they already have.

Their first move of the offseason and probably their biggest one was resigning Jason Kidd back for a three year deal which implied right there that they’ll keep trying with this crew and in order to improve this formula, the Mavericks traded Antwan Wright and Devon George to the Raptors on a four team exchange that brought Shawn Marion to Texas in a tentative to emulate the Magic. The idea is play Dirk at Center and spread the floor with Kidd, Terry, Howard, Marion on clutch time and hope that at some point, somebody will get opened. Since Dirk can’t play the 5 for 48 minutes, Dallas signed Drew Gooden for a one year deal $4.5 million dollars guaranteed, it’s his 7th team in 8 years (nothing else needs to be said). The Mavs also intended to improve their second unit but then they signed Tim Thomas to be their shooter off the bench which is pathetic to me because Thomas is the guy that goes hot for a night and score 15 points but he disappears for the next 20, 25 games.

Another question mark around the team could be how Dirk Nowitzki is going to react with everything that has been happening with his personal life that unfortunately became public. During the series against the Nuggets while everything was going on, Dirk showed an amazing ability to focus and to perform under outside pressure. Now that the matter seems to be finished, expect maybe a more relieved, calm Nowitzki.

Like written before, after another disappointing season ending, it would be easy for Cuban to start trading Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard for draft picks but he decided not to. Dallas’ case is very similar to Toronto’s. With Marion starting instead of Wright, the Mavs are better than they were a year ago but that’s not nearly enough to join the Lakers and the Spurs as the top contenders on the West. The hope is that San Antonio run out of legs like they did in years before and that Artest + Kardashian sink the ship in Los Angeles and all of a sudden they are right there just waiting.

Dirk Nowitzki is my favorite NBA player and it sucks to say that he, just like Steve Nash, won’t be able to get his ring before it’s all said and done.

The title says it all…or does it?

Holding a “sin-burning” (as some would call it) is nothing new. However a Bible is the last thing you would expect to see thrown in the fire! Nevertheless, as crazy as it sounds that is exactly what one North Carolina church is doing.

The church also plans to burn religious books by such eminent authors as Billy Graham, Rick Warren, John McArthur, James Dobson, Charles Swindoll, John Piper, Chuck Colson, Tony Evans, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swagart, Franklin Graham , Bill Bright, Tim Lahaye, T.D. Jakes, Benny Hinn, Joyce Myers, Robert Schuller, Mother Teresa , and The Pope!

Tapes and CDs which contain what the pastor considers ungodly music are also on the list.

Needless to say it has sparked a firestorm of controversy. In fact the church’s website was down for some time, perhaps after being overwhelmed by visitors. But can it really be as bad as it sounds? After all, they don’t plan to burn every kind of Bible… just everything that is not the King James. Versions like the NIV, ASV, NASB, etc.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t burn Bibles of any kind. But I kind of feel bad for the poor old boy… He is trying to draw attention to the issue of Bible versions… a fact that the media glosses over with ease.

What if, next Sunday morning you attended a church where the preacher stood up and, reading from “the Bible” said, “You SON OF A BITCH?“ Well that’s exactly what he would say if he was reading from one of the first editions of the Living Bible.

In 1Samuel 20:30 the King James Version reads: “Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman…” But Kenneth Taylor’s Living Bible says, “…You son of a bitch…”

Being a Christian, I hate to even type that out but that’s exactly what it says. The editors of that version have since changed the wording because of complaints, but I kid you not, that is exactly what the Living Bible says.

Knowing that, would you still fault him for burning a Living Bible?

I’m not trying to defend Mr. Grizzard’s publicity stunt (which is all this amounts to). If I was the host of such an event I certainly wouldn’t give an interview to a reporter in my overalls like this Pastor did! I do wish he would have spell checked his flier at least before he sent it out, its littered with misspelled words.

Nevertheless, Christians should be alerted to the issue of Bible versions.

Take the NIV for instance, if you’re an avid reader, you must have noticed that it removes entire verses in some places.

Also in John 1:1 the King James Bible says, “…the Word was God.” Those of you familiar with the Bible know that “the Word” is a reference to Jesus.

The deity of Christ (Jesus being God in the flesh) is one of the most basic Bible doctrines. But the New World Translation says,”…the Word was a God.” Thus the NWT, a ‘translation’ put out by the Jehovah Witnesses, denies the deity of Christ.

There are many other examples I could list but time fails me. I simply want to say that this man who has been slaughtered by the media, might have his heart in the right place even if his methods are questionable.

WWJD?

Again, I wouldn’t do it myself; but when we ask WWJD, let’s not forget we’re talking about the same Jesus who, when He saw the commercialism in the Temple, “…made a scourge of small cords…” and then “…drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.” (John 2:15-16)

Owner: Dave Mantel

2008-09 Record: 114-74-1

Keepers: Ray Allen, Andrea Bargnani, Vince Carter, Jason Kidd, Brook Lopez, Shawn Marion

It seems like every year Dave Mantel has a bad team on paper. Still, he manages to catch a lot of people off guard, even picking up a Green Jacket in 2007. This season looks like an uphill battle for the Maddogs, but is it really safe to count Mantel out? The only manager to win at least 100 games in three consecutive seasons is out to prove his critics wrong again in 2009-10.

If Mantel wants to continue his successful run this season, he’ll have to use the same shrewd managing tactics that made him a winner the past three years. Without a star keeper and with Jason Kidd headed to Darren Sinke following the draft, he’ll rely on a pair of promising big men (Andrea Bargnani and Brook Lopez) and a trio of over-the-hill veterans (Vince Carter, Ray Allen and Shawn Marion) to keep things competitive. I’m going out on a limb and saying this is the year things fall apart.

Mantel won’t get much out of this year’s draft, either. After picking 10th in the first round, he’s without a pick until the third (28th overall). Though he has gotten by with crafty lineups before, Mantel will be hard-pressed to put together a solid squad in 2008-09.

PROGNOSIS

Not good. We’ll see if Mantel has any more tricks up his sleeve this season.

Owner: Darren Sinke

2008-09 Record: 117-70-2 (League Champion)

Keepers: Paul Gasol, Rashard Lewis, Kevin Martin, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Russell Westbrook

Late in the 2007-08 season and with a roster loaded with injuries, Darren Sinke made the decision to shut down and rebuild for 2009. Needless to say, things went according to plan. After sitting comfortably in the league’s top three from start to finish, Sinke took home the Green Jacket with a tight win over Brent Minty in the 2009 President’s Residence Championship. With a well-rounded group of keepers and an unrivaled dedication to the league, expect Sinke to be right in the mix come the end of this season as well.

Back to lead this year’s entry is Dirk Nowitzki, whose 25.9 scoring average last season was the third-highest of his career. At 31, Nowitzki figures to have at least another couple years as a top-tier fantasy talent. The big German is joined by a pair of reliable foreigners — Pau Gasol and Steve Nash — and Sacramento’s Kevin Martin, who averaged 24.6 points and 2.3 three-pointers per game in 2008-09 (albeit in just 51 appearances).

Sinke will also be picking up a veteran contributor in Jason Kidd, who he’ll receive following the draft as part of a deal with Dave Mantel that was completed earlier this month. Though his scoring numbers are down, Kidd is still one of the league’s top assist and steal men, on top of being arguably the NBA’s best rebounding guard.

PROGNOSIS

Playoffs, and a definite title contender.

Elected officials are making a mockery of our Constitution and our Government. One of the latest lowlights of the socialist agenda, is to use OUR tax money to fund pro-Obama artwork, music, and other forms of Propaganga to emplore us to support the socialist agenda. Well, Mr. President, with all due respect, this is my submission, acurately depicting my thoughts of this and other programs you and your allies are perpetrating on the American people. As you highly appeal to the Progressives and Socialists in this country, this should help boost your standing with them and encourage them to continue to aspire to a new level of sheeplehood.

Here’s a clip from Fox News Interview of the journalist who broke the story:

The art of agitprop By Alex Beam

http://www.boston.com/ae/theater_arts/articles/2009/09/01/the_art_of_agitprop/

Last month, Patrick Courrielche, a Los Angeles-based arts consultant, was invited by the National Endowment for the Arts to join a 75-person conference call “to help lay a new foundation for growth, focusing on core areas of the recovery agenda – health care, energy and environment, safety and security, education, community renewal,’’ according to the invitation.

Pardon me? The taxpayer-funded NEA is trying to recruit sympathetic artists to push the Obama agenda? Yes, it sounds wacky, and it sounded wacky to Courrielche, too. “Artists shouldn’t be used as tools of the state to help create a climate amenable to their positions, which is what appears to be happening in this instance,’’ Courrielche wrote in an Internet post. Speaking on the phone, he explained in greater detail how the organizers – NEA communications director Yosi Sargent, a promoter of Shepard Fairey’s famous “Hope’’ poster; Buffy Wicks, a former Obama field organizer now with the White House Office of Public Engagement, and three others – “said we had the ability to shape the people around us.’’

“The NEA was not created to encourage artists to address issues,’’ he said, and he’s right. State-sponsored agitprop, or agitational propaganda, is a tool usually associated with totalitarian regimes. According to its website, the NEA sucks down about $150 million a year from Congress, to support “excellence in the arts, both new and established; bringing the arts to all Americans; and providing leadership in arts education.’’ This year, for instance, the endowment gave over $1 million to Massachusetts nonprofits “threatened by declines in philanthropic and other support during the current economic downturn,’’ among other local grants.

Obama’s Sept. 8 speech to schoolchildren from Michelle Malkin

http://michellemalkin.com/2009/09/01/obamas-sept-8-speech-to-schoolchildren/

President Obama told a student reporter last month that he would be making an address to schoolchildren on September 8…

The Daily Paul picked up the story last week and linked to teachers’ manuals pegged to Obama’s address, which have now been linked on Drudge.

The documents have a heavy activist bent:

During the Speech:

• As the President speaks, teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful. Students could use a note-taking graphic organizer such as a Cluster Web, or students could record their thoughts on sticky notes. Younger children can draw pictures and write as appropriate. As students listen to the speech, they could think about the following:

What is the President trying to tell me?

What is the President asking me to do?

What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?

• Students can record important parts of the speech where the President is asking them to do something. Students might think about: What specific job is he asking me to do? Is he asking anything of anyone else? Teachers? Principals? Parents? The American people?

• Students can record any questions they have while he is speaking and then discuss them after the speech. Younger children may need to dictate their questions.

After the Speech:

• Teachers could ask students to share the ideas they recorded, exchange sticky notes or stick notes on a butcher paper poster in the classroom to discuss main ideas from the speech, i.e. citizenship, personal responsibility, civic duty.
• Students could discuss their responses to the following questions:

What do you think the President wants us to do?

Does the speech make you want to do anything?

Are we able to do what President Obama is asking of us?

..The goal of the speech and the lesson plans is to challenge students to work hard in school, to not drop out and to meet short-term goals like behaving in class, doing their homework and goals that parents and teachers alike can agree are noble,” Tommy Vietor, a White House spokesman, told FOXNews.com. “This isn’t a policy speech. This is a speech designed to encourage kids to stay in school.” But in advance of the address, the Department of Education has offered educators “classroom activities” to coincide with Obama’s message. Students in grades pre-K-6, for example, are encouraged to “write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.” Teachers are also given guidance to tell students to “build background knowledge about the president of the United States by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama.” During the speech, “teachers can ask students to write down key ideas or phrases that are important or personally meaningful.” For grades 7-12, the Department of Education suggests teachers prepare by excerpting quotes from Obama’s speeches on education for their students to contemplate — and ask as questions such as “Why does President Obama want to speak with us today? How will he inspire us? How will he challenge us?” Activities suggested for after the speech include asking students “what resonated with you from President Obama’s speech? What lines/phrase do you remember?”

Michael Kidd and his wife Jean have been living out of a tiny room for months. They have lost control of their money, their home, even their car. They say they’ve been robbed of their dignity and their voice. And who do they say is responsible? The State of Texas.
A year ago, no one in the political establishment would have believed that a bill to thoroughly audit the Fed would have almost two-thirds of the House (including every Republican representative and nearly one hundred Democrats) and a quarter of the Senate on board. Certainly, no one would have bet that three-fourths of the American people would support such an audit. As many of you may have heard by now, recent statements from Representative Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, have indicated that the House will vote on Audit the Fed in the next few months. However, rather than voting on HR 1207 as a standalone bill, many in Congress hope to roll it into the comprehensive regulatory reform package recently proposed by the White House. This reform package grants new, more comprehensive powers to the Fed and strengthens the government’s control over our economy. Campaign for Liberty and other friends of liberty stand in opposition to this proposal, as well as any other attempt to convert this historic movement for transparency into yet another rubber-stamping of politics as usual. It is imperative that Audit the Fed come before the House and Senate on its own merits. The American people stand behind a thorough audit of the Fed, and we should not be adding additional powers when we don’t fully know what is being done with the ones they currently have. Call Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office today at (202) 225-0100 and urge her to stand with the American people by giving the Audit the Fed bill full debate and a standalone vote on the House floor.

http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx?RsrcID=53243

A United Nations group that supports teaching 5-to-8-year-olds about masturbation is partly funded by the United States, which will contribute $78.1 million in the 2010 fiscal year to the group, according to the State Department. As CNSNews.com previously reported, the U.N. Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) released its International Guidelines for Sexual Educationin June, and among the topics to discuss with 5-to-8-year-olds, according to the report, is “masturbation” and that “girls and boys have private body parts that can feel pleasurable when touched by oneself.” Although the United States endured tension with the group and even withdrew its membership for two decades, President George W. Bush announced in 2002 that the United States would rejoin UNESCO, with funding to re-commence in FY2004 at $84.1 million. Since then, the United States has contributed nearly $536 million to the organization. Bush told the U.N. General Assembly in 2002, “As a symbol of our commitment to human dignity, the United States will return to UNESCO. This organization has been reformed and America will participate fully in its mission to advance human rights and tolerance and learning.” UNESCO’s biennial budget for 2008-09 was $631 million, or approximately $315.5 million per year in that period. The United States gave $75.1 million in 2009, which is about 25 percent of UNESCO’s annual budget. While UNESCO was originally set up chiefly to advance education, some critics say the Internet has rendered that task obsolete, and the lack of a clear mission has now translated into concerns about waste, fraud and abuse. Additionally, UNESCO has taken controversial, far-left positions and has been perceived as increasingly anti-American since its ranks grew to 193 nations, many of them from the third world.

A newly released report by the Institute for Medicine and the National Research Council details strategies for local governments to combat what it calls an epidemic of childhood obesity, including enacting zoning and land-use regulations that would “restrict fast food establishments near school grounds and public playgrounds.” The report, “Local Government Actions to Prevent Childhood Obesity,” was compiled by the Committee on Childhood Obesity Prevention Actions for Local Governments, a committee of health care professionals, academics, and policy makers. The report offers nine “action strategies” for healthy eating and three “actions for increasing physical activities.” The report, unveiled at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington on Tuesday, also advises local governments to impose higher taxes “to discourage consumption of foods and beverages that have minimal nutritional value” and to mandate that chain restaurants (those with 20 or more stores) provide caloric information on menus. When asked by CNSNews.com if regulating where restaurants can be built could harm communities by taking away jobs, committee members said the report presents “options” and that studies show that fast food restaurants are disproportionately located in low-income and minority neighborhoods.

Life in the Eighteen Sixties in Carleton Place is recalled in the present fifth installment of a ser

Life in the Eighteen Sixties in Carleton Place is recalled in the present fifth installment of a series of annals reviewing events in the first hundred years of this community and its surrounding district.

The location of Carleton Place at a waterfall on one of the larger tributaries of the Ottawa River and on one of Eastern Ontario’s first railways proved in the Eighteen Sixties to place this community in a position of some advantage in the lumber economy of the Ottawa Valley. A number of new industrial firms were established here. Among them were two sawmills and a foundry each of which grew to become a substantial employer of capital and labour and a leading industry of the town.

Prince of Wales

1860 – Archibald McArthur (1816-1884), reeve and prominent wholesale and retail merchant, enlarged his business premises here by building a store of stone construction in 1860 near the corner of Bridge and Mill Streets.

The young Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, viewed Carleton Place while travelling by coach and railway through Lanark and Leeds Counties in the course of a tour of Canada.

Patrick Struthers (1830-1907), merchant and later magistrate, became postmaster of Carleton Place. He continued in charge of the local post office for over forty-five years.

New Saw Mill

1861 – A steam-powered sawmill was built in the area of the present Riverside Park on the south bank of the river. The old Muirhead sawmill, which was located near the present electric power plant, was leased and reopened by Robert Gray.

Brice McNeely Jr. (1831-1920) began a forty year period of operating the long established tannery. The town bridge across the Mississippi was rebuilt.

Findlays Foundry

1862 – In the infancy of the town’s present leading industry, a new foundry was opened on the Perth Road, now High Street, by David Findlay (1835-1890) for the manufacture of stoves, ploughs and other castings.

Canadian military preparations were begun in view of risks of the United States Civil War leading to war between Britain and the United States. At Carleton Place a volunteer rifle company, with newspaper editor James Poole as its captain, was equipped to take the place of the townships former militia regiment. A new infantry company was formed at Almonte.

In a match at the Almonte exhibition grounds between the Carleton Place and Almonte cricket clubs, the Almonte club’s resplendent uniforms featured white caps, pink shirts and white pantaloons.

Militia Training

1863 – The Ramsay lead mine at Carleton Place resumed operation. A woollen mill at Appleton built by Robert Teskey (1803-1892) was opened under the management of his son John Adam Teskey (1837-1908) and son-in-law William Bredin.

In a target shooting competition at Carleton Place between the local Rifle Company and the Almonte Infantry Company, the rifle company appeared in its new uniforms with green tunics, grey pants with red facings, and dark belts. The infantry uniforms had scarlet tunics, grey pants and white belts. The impressive headpiece of both companies’ uniforms was an ornamented cap known as a shako.

Railway Extension

1864 – The Brockville & Ottawa Railway Company’s line was extended and opened from Almonte to Arnprior, providing rail transportation between the St. Lawrence River and Grand Trunk Railway at Brockville and the Ottawa River at Sand Point. George Lowe became the station master at Carleton Place.

Temperance Movement

1865 – A temperance society known as Temple No. 122 of the Independent Order of Good Templars, was formed at Carleton Place to oppose the sale of alcoholic beverages. A proposal to apply a local option Temperance Act to Beckwith township including Carleton Place was rejected by a majority of thirty votes.

The Beckwith municipal council elected for 1865 was Patrick Struthers, reeve, and Archibald McArthur, Donald Carmichael, George Kidd and Alexander Ferguson.

Gillies & McLaren

1866 – This town’s first large scale business had its start in 1866 with the opening of the Gillies & McLaren lumber mill with thirty employees. James Gillies (1840-1909) came as its manager. Five years later John Gillies (1811-1888), who had founded the firm in Lanark township, removed to Carleton Place. Both remained here for life and were leaders in the town’s industrial growth. James Gillies for over thirty five years was head of the later widespread lumbering operations of Gillies Brothers, a position occupied from 1914 to 1926 by his brother David Gillies (1849-1926) of Carleton Place.

A shingle mill also began business here in 1866, managed by John Craigie. He was the builder of the town’s first two steamboats, the Mississippi and the Enterprise. The local grist and oatmeal mills were bought by Henry Bredin from Hugh Boulton Jr. They continued to be operated by James Greig (1806-1884), who ran these mills from 1862 to 1868 after the death of Hugh Boulton Sr., founder of this first industry of the community.

The union of Lanark and Renfrew Counties was ended in 1866 by the establishment of a separate Renfrew County council and administration.

Fenian Raids

Raids from the United States upon border points were made in 1866 by groups known as Fenians, whose professed objective was political independence for Ireland. The Carleton Place and Almonte volunteer companies were dispatched to Brockville in June. Captain of the Almonte company was James D. Gemmill. Total of all ranks serving from Carleton Place numbered fifty-seven. Under local officers Captain James C. Poole, Lieut. John Brown and Ensign J. Jones Bell, they included such Carleton Place and township family names as Burke, Coleman, Cram, Dack, Docherty, Duff, Enright, Ferguson, Fleming, Hamilton, Kilpatrick, Leslie, Lavallee, Moffatt, Moore, Morphy, and McArthur, McCaffrey, McCallum, McEwen, McFadden, McNab, McNeely and McPherson, Neelin, Patterson, Pattie, Rattray, Sinclair, Stewart, Sumner, Williams, Willis and Wilson.

Volunteers from these and other Lanark County areas served also in the Fenian Raids of 1870. Drill halls built in 1866 at county centres including Perth, Carleton Place and Almonte were used for many years. The Carleton Place drill shed was at the market square between Beckwith and Judson Streets, at the present site of the skating rink. Almonte’s military quarters were combined with the North Lanark Agricultural Society’s main exhibition building then being erected.

Confederation

1867 – Canadian confederation was hailed in Carleton Place by a day of celebration which extended from a sunrise cannon salute to an evening of torchlight processions and fireworks. There were speeches by the clergy, a military parade with rifles firing, a costume carnival and sports events featuring novelty races.

A new sawmill was built by the Gillies & McLaren firm to employ up to a hundred men. At Arklan Island a smaller sawmill was built by William Bredin. Erection of a large frame building on Mill Street for use as a woollen cloth factory was begun by Allan McDonald. The Allan McDonald foundry was reopened by John Grant and operated for four years, producing stoves, ploughs, ploughpoints and other castings. A local house construction boom was under way. Daniel Galbraith (1813-1879) of Ramsay township was elected to the Ontario Legislature of North Lanark. He represented this constituency in the House of Commons from the following election until his death in 1879.

Another Railway

1868 – Building of the Canada Central Railway between Ottawa and Carleton Place was begun and was completed two years later. In ceremonies marking the start of construction, held at the Carleton Place end of the line and attended by Richard W. Scott, Q.C., M.P.P., of Ottawa, the sod turning ritual was performed by the Rev. J. H. Preston of St. James Church, Carleton Place.

Caldwell Sawmill

1869 – This towns second large sawmill business was started by Boyd Caldwell (1818-1888) and managed by his son William Caldwell. It operated for twenty-two years on the site of the present Riverside Park.

An enlarged stone grist mill building was erected by William Bredin on Mill Street, together with buildings occupied in the following year by Joseph Cram as a planing mill and by John F. Cram as a tannery. A stone church building for the Zion Presbyterian congregation was built at the church’s present Albert and Beckwith Street location.

The Mississippi Navigation Company was incorporated to build locks at Innisville and Ferguson’s Falls and open navigation from Lanark and Playfairville to Carleton Place. Its directors were James H. Dixon of Peterborough, Abraham Code, M.P.P. (then owning mills at Ferguson’s Falls) and Robert Bell, John Craigie and Robert Crampton of Carleton Place. The company’s brief existence ended with the building of a steamboat, The Enterprise. Bought by the Gillies & McLaren firm , The Enterprise plied the Mississippi Lakes for about twenty-five years in the service of the lumber industry and provided transportation for many of the town’s public events of bygone summer days.

If you believe everything you hear in the media right now you would think the Nuggets have no chance

If you believe everything you hear in the media right now you would think the Nuggets have no chance to do anything this upcoming season and will be fighting with the Clippers for draft picks the following spring. Now, I understand that this is a slow time of year for sports writers and they are struggling to fill air time and white space with stories, but giving playoff spots away is a bit premature.

All the crying is over who the Mavs, Spurs and Lakers have picked up in the off-season. Along with the Nuggets, these four are considered the top teams to beat in the West. So, let’s take a look at what has really transpired instead of the hype.

Lakers – Picked up Ron Artest and sent Ariza (who gave the Nuggets problems in the playoffs) to Houston. I think this bodes well for the rest of the West due to Artest’s attitude problems and he’s never won a ring. Can’t see Phil zenning Artest to play nice with Kobe and team. The Lakers will still make the playoffs, but when it gets tight there will be too much infighting to win another ring.

Mavs – Resigned Kidd who can still manage the floor at 36 years old, but the Nuggets have the speed to compensate for intelligent play. They traded youth and upside with Bass going to Orlando for experience and potential attitude problem in Shawn Marion. They did get tougher on defense to help Kidd by picking up Quinton Ross. Looking forward to K-mart and Marion tussles.

Spurs – Finely is coming back for another go at a ring, but at 36 not a major factor. The Dyess Man signed with the Spurs (with Denver contributing $3m towards his salary) after dissing the Nuggets as part of the trade that brought Smooth back to Denver. At 34 and with a history of injuries he isn’t the force he showed signs of as a youngster while in the Mile High city. The Spurs did get some fresh young legs with the signing of Haislip after trading backups Oberto and Thomas for Richard Jefferson. A backcourt of Jefferson and Parker will be a tough defensive match-up for any team, but Denver has the speed to keep them in front.

Out of the three I would say the Spurs probably made the best moves for their team and have the best chance to keep peace in the locker room. As we have seen with the Yankees, it isn’t about star power but playing as a team that wins championships.

I think Denver made the steal of the draft with Ty Lawson going at #18. He’ll get playing time this year and can learn from one of the smartest players in the league at the guard position – Mr. Big Shot. Plus, the Nugs re-signed Birdman which was huge for fans as well as the team. There are still a couple of possible opportunities to bring in another big man, where the Nuggets need some depth. No need to start making bag faces for this season, the Nuggets are far from Clipperland.
