It’s totally done. I’m now officially in my new writing space!

While designing my haven, I held close the five senses:

Sight ~ Hearing ~ Touch ~ Smell ~ Taste

By incorporating these within the physical room, I’ve provided myself with the inspiration to include all five senses in every scene I write. The gentle reminders bring awareness so I can write to ultimately enrich my reader’s experience.

• Sight – I selected a soft pink for the walls with white ceiling and window/door trims. The “slipper” pink is soothing and brings comfort. Each picture I’ve selected to dress the walls hold special meaning. Using Aunt Lee’s original desk, my doll collection finally sees the light of day: Chatty Cathy and American Girls Mia and Nellie. Anne of Green Gables stands on top of the bookcase and my baby doll is nestled against the love seat. 
• Hearing – It’s a long awaited quietness except for the ceiling fan spinning or the occasional animal sounds coming from the cows, cats, or birds outside. Whenever they find me, I can immediately hear toenails tapping against the new handscraped hickory floors as my Dobie girls, Beth and Anna, enter the room. Neither a television show nor a YouTube video is heard unless I want to hear! Celtic Harp cd is ready in the player, waiting patiently for me to press play!
• Touch – Different textures fill the room and top my desk. The white lace curtains hanging in the windows blow softly against the breeze as if reaching out to touch me. Each time I pass one window to get to my desk, I do gently, purposely touch the lace before it reaches me. The quilt top covering the daybed has thousands of stitches causing puffs to the all cotton fabric. This provides an interesting texture as I smooth the covering from the latest use by Beth or Anna. The brushed corduroy swivel rocker next to the twill upholstered love seat offers a choice of textures, depending on my mood. Even my spinning wheel is in here!
• Smell – Fortunately the fresh paint smell has dissipated and the lemon oil polish used to give all the wood furniture a nice drink is fading. I never realized how fragrant a soy candle can be when not burning. I love the one I bought when Mother, Linda, Leasa, Leslie and I went on our girls’ day out. It is a scented mixture of eucalyptus and lavender and was purchased specifically with this room in mind.
• Taste – Coffee! I retired my Christmas mug I’ve used for over ten years and now exclusively use the mug I bought in Ireland almost a year ago! How can coffee taste so much better with a special mug? It must be the room!

As usual, there are always more bridesmaids than best man
(only to add the best man is a pretty cute Japanese guy).

Two, when they start to use like those specific scientific terms on lungs, I became the artfy farty people who snorts when smart people are around. These bunch however is the coolest, the most down-to-earth AND gorgeous doctors (in a semester’s time) to-be.

All imported, the two minahs are the noisy bunch.

Three, I love simple weddings have I told you that?
The simplest, the sweetest.

My 2nd installment to Songsang and I’m glad I didn’t fancy them up.
This time round, my greatest thanks for Erika & Wani for allowing me to exploit them this way.

Inspired by the first one, I had so many ideas and inspirations to do the 2nd,
a better one and I hope it is.

Tony Scott and action sequences aren’t the best of friends, throw in some horrific casting and a group of characters so dull that it defies belief and you’re somewhere near where Domino starts it’s pre-title descent into insignificance.

Apologies; small history lesson coming up. Quiet at the back.

Georgiana (pronounced Geor-jay-na) Cavendish was the Duchess of Devonshire at the end of the Eighteenth Century, and a more newsworthy and gossiped-over cause celebre it would be difficult to imagine. Except, of course, it wouldn’t. In fact, it’d be the simplest thing in the world, for Georgiana was born a Spencer and, among her descendants, famously, and inescapably as her story develops, is Diana, Princess of Wales, hovering above this tale like the ghost of Tabloids Future. Even the film poster’s tittle-tattle tagline gloats that “there were three people in her marriage”.

Now, Georgiana – affectionately, ‘G’ – was the first wife of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, and a celebrated beauty and a socialite. Around her, she gathered a circle of literary (Sheridan, for one, who satirised her to great effect in School for Scandal) and political figures (Charles Fox, notably, one time Foreign Secretary and keen abolitionist), and she brazenly used her patronage to great effect in winning votes for the Whigs.

Early on in her marriage her childlessness proved to be a matter of grave concern, but, after numerous miscarriages she finally gave birth to two daughters, before eventually producing a son and heir. During these difficult periods, where her relationship with her husband faltered, she introduced the Duke to his future mistress and second wife-to-be, Lady Elizabeth Foster, despite ‘Bess’ being widely believed to be G’s best friend. Admittedly, Devonshire had been having significant troubles himself, in keeping the family jewels securely fastened inside his riding kecks, and had already fathered at least one child via a servant girl, whom G adopted as her own. The child, that is. Not the servant girl.

Georgiana also ‘enjoyed the especial and close intimacy’ of thrusting new Whig bright young thing Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey to you, or Viscount Howick if you prefer, who much later on became – praise be! – Prime Minister.

Quite a dysfunctional little tale, all told, but genuinely fascinating stuff, especially with the historical resonances that inevitably linger long after the telling.

Saul Dibb’s remit for The Duchess, the BBC Productions take on this tangled web and seriously crowded marriage, is perforce a tough gig. How do you play all of this without tipping over into melodrama and bodice-ripping silliness? Well, carefully, obviously, and for much of the film’s length the care is ladled on tangibly. Joining the clenched straitjacket of due diligence is an emotional incontinence from many of the players who are understandably scared of letting go and running, hair tossing and big blousy shirts agape, across windswept moors to the strains of Vaughan Williams. But, oddly, it just about works. It’s a thin wire they have to walk along, but one or two instances aside, walk it they do.

Chief clencher is Ralph Fiennes, as the dour uptight Duke, who brings new depth to the utterance ‘Hmmm’, whether he’s foisting one of his bastards on his appalled new wife, stripping her for the first time, seducing his mistress, eating swan stuffed with snipe, or doing the estate accounts. Fiennes is pretty damned good, all told, and knows that like most Englishmen his real passions are dogs and horses, and that rogering is regrettably the one thing he can’t delegate. His is the glummest performance you’ll see all year, but he has the best line, and it’s also the finest observation in the whole thing when, looking out the window at his many offspring playing in the garden he says, with the thinnest smile of all time, “how wonderful it would be to feel that free,” and in that instant you understand the limitations he has felt all his life. For such an unsympathetic character to elicit that level of understanding says much of Fiennes’s delivery.

The rest of the cast do pretty well, apart from Dominic Cooper, of course, as Grey, who proves as he did in The History Boys and Mamma Mia! that he’s just a clothes horse with the ability to recite stuff. You want gravitas and depth and – because he nearly destroys G by asking her to leave her children for him – some possible reason as to why she might even consider such an option. Not for this pretty little popinjay, I’m afraid. Can’t he get a job in a boy band or presenting CBeebies, or something?

Newcomer Hayley Atwell, ah now, that’s different. As the pulchritudinous Bess, she’s the revelation in the mix, filling the screen with a lusty busty reason for living, luring the gloomy Peer into her bed while G is off out being all socialitey.

And that leaves Keira Knightly, of course, as G, who I’ve not yet mentioned, because, well, as I write this, she’s everywhere; on buses, bus stops, magazines, newspapers, the TV, everywhere. Does she really need any more publicity? Well, strangely, perhaps a little, because much to my amazement she’s actually pretty good. She’s also clenching away like crazy (and with good reason, being married to Ralph’s Duke would make anyone tense) and this suits her limitations. Like Cecilia in Atonement, that ice maiden thing works well for her, and although I wouldn’t give up a life of political high office for her, she’s pretty believable as the Duchess, and her many faults, outweighed by her love for her children, come across making her a difficult but winning figure.

Surprisingly, there is a very dark seam running throughout the film, and it gives it a much more grown-up feel than you might expect. A fairy tale it isn’t, and it’s all the better for that.

What began as my own personal crusade to defend the honor of the Great Lady, Kiera Knightley, against the barrage of contempt expressed by my office coworkers lead to a startling discovery. Of course, I went on IMDB, search under Kiera’s filmography, and came across the film noted above.

Another WWII melodrama. You might ask, what’s wrong with Kiera, what does she typecast herself in old-fashioned gowns and regalia from bygone eras? Even though it was the role as a secondhand soccer player that shot her to stardom, leaving her Indian co-star in the dustbins of ER repeats, she still managed to insert herself perfectly into any period, whether it was Austen’s England or revisionist Camelot. Perhaps, it’s that bone structure, the always anorexic look that resists the flux of standards defining beauty at each stage of human history. She’s not a chameleon, a label more fitting for the likes of Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman. At the same time, her distinct physicality and pompous Britishness leaves female viewers in the throes of envy and disgust, while straight men can only admire indiscriminately.

It was Pride and Prejudice that made me appreciate the acting chops of Ms. Knightley. Her interpretation of Elizabeth Bennet uncovers a hopeless giddy schoolgirl behind the peasant garments and abrasive wit, supplying a dimension refutably absent in past adaptations and Austen’s own novel. The look Lizzy gives to the Big D (Mr. Darcy) as he lifts her off onto the carriage brims with a pleasant radiance of utter shock and conflicted pleasure. But enough of my praise since her “Cecilia” in Atonement sealed the deal for me. Transforming from the frigid aristocrat to the riches-to-rags girlfriend in waiting, Kiera outdoes the stereotype and draws our attention towards the film’s cathartic reveal.

I have no doubts about her upcoming role, but I loathe the marketing strategy of Lionsgate (the distributor) who dares to blur the glaring differences between the two films. Relocating a familiar face and setting into a totally new context is the ultimate practice of deception in the world of images and its self-conscious irony. “You know it’s not the same, but you’ll believe it nonetheless.” A review from a women’s magazine, She, contributed to the outrageous quote for this post.

Considering that both movies involve the existence of a writer, as historical figure (poet Dylan Thomas) or overarching narrative God (Briony), the underlying connection lies closer to matters of the heart—LOVE between men and women, or if the lesbian undertone isn’t explicit enough, between paparazzi icons of their generation (denied by the producers, championed by the press). If Atonement was marketed as romantic epic like its predecessors, then The Edge of Love no longer is an effect of that lineage, but a bastardized duplication of the 2007 film. Again, I’m not attacking the film but how it is advertised: the innocuous frolicking along the beach, the insistent repetition of “Come back,” and most of all, a meat shot of a TYPEWRITER. You’re not Briony, Dylan Thomas. Coyly promising an emotional impact as poignant as its half-sister, the trailer delivers less of a preview, than a recap. Blasphemy, indeed!

Kiera is back, war casts a bleak future, and all we can think of is the fragility that hangs within our reach. If you’re a fan of the former, then you can sift through the compare-and-contrast stills below and spot the original, not necessarily the fraud.

Cecilia and Robbie

Personal bubbles are these invisible spaces, which dictates that measurements for other earth beings. Although most of the time others are un-aware to these spaces until with usually violent outburst from the possessor of the bubble attacks them. Most time people have a specific personal bubble size that stays similar all the time-although it does change for people who are of trust and liking. After a few tries people learn the boundaries each person has.

But there is a second person. One like me who has a constantly changing personal bubble. Mine varies directly on mood. For most the time my bubble is non-existent and I will have no fear of hugging or attacking people. This is due to my usually cheerful demeanor-unlike Dan Laser I find happiness almost everywhere. Once in a while my bubble expands 200 percent; this is due a change in mood. Due to the fact that I am stressed, frustrated, mad, annoyed or have been ditched.

So, if I say I have a personal bubble today. It is really for your best interest that you take it to heart and stay whatever space I put between you and myself.
