One of Hip Hop’s best kept secrets, Kil Ripkin, AKA The Genereal, brings forth his highly anticipated project The Quickening Vol. 1. It serves as a cosmic ride through the paradigm shift in the spirit of pure, unadulterated Hip Hop. Featuring appearances by Charles Herron, Big Treal (Joe Grizzly) and Ike Turner, this project addresses a range of topics from metaphysics, current social issues like immigration and the economy, to relationships. The soundscape features production from Raticus, Eric G, A Jacks, Eddie Cheeba, Tony Roche (The Exceptionalist) and Krutty Ranks; as well as freestyles over some of The Godian’s favorite instrumental vibrations. Down below you can also catch Kil’s video for “Not You”.

Kil Ripkin’s name might lead you to believe he is a Baltimore artist, but he actually hails from Brooklyn (Coney Island, to be more precise). He sent me some music awhile back, when I was far less consistent with adding new content to this here blog, but I did listen and very much like what I heard. I was instantly won over by the hook on this latest track, “Not You”, produced by Eric G. Making music with a message that doesn’t necessarily feel like music with a message (read: overbearing) is no easy feat, but it’s one that Kil handles effortlessly on this.

The first 25 seconds or so led me to believe this was more of a slide show, but the video, which was directed by Science Projects, starts around the 25 second mark. Nice:

Hip Hop is a culture that was created by and for the people, and when it comes to exibiting that love and passion for the art, nobody displays it like Kil Ripkin the Genereal, AKA The Ghetto Correspondent. Describing his music as soulful, truthful, spiritual and rebelious. Kil stopped by Po Politickin to discusses his musical career thus far.

Po: Sup Kil, thanks for stopping by. For our first question, could you describe a day in the life of Kil Ripkin?

Kil Ripkin: I wake up early in the morning, usually express my daily appetite by letting my pen touch the ink. Once I’ve hit either a sixteen or more, I wake my family up, and then depending on the day, I either hit the studio or the job. I do what I need to do in the studio; some cats go to the studio and smoke or drink and relax. I’m the opposite. I go into the studio prepared with a plan to one take and leave. I’m all about staying focused right now. Once I leave the studio I come home and spend time with my family. I usually contact my manager, Phill Roche, to make sure we are on the same page. I review potential beats, shows, and suggestions.
But I really don’t have a typical day. I could be shooting a video in New York with Torae one week, and the next week doing a photo shoot or playing a show. In the music business I feel a typical usually doesn’t exist.

Po: By listening to your music, I could tell that you are a very revolutionary and conscious artist? Could you discuss this? Do you believe that you will be able to reach mainstream with this type of music?

Kil Ripkin: My music is all based on my character. It is so important in my values to always maintain the truth. The revolutionary reference is something people have labeled me, but I guess it reflects the experiences I have gone through and my story, so if you want to call it a revolutionary one I’m not mad at that. I definitely have been able to reach the mainstream with my music. The more music I put out the more I realize I have no Kil Ripkin fan demographic. I mean for me to come out Coney Island what some refer to as the hood and have fans in the Hamptons is direct evidence that I am reaching the mainstream. Also what you’re seeing is a overall call for more music with integrity and spirit, people are sick of the garbage.

Po: Who were your musical influences and what would be a dream collaboration for you (Rapper, Singer, Producer)?

Kil Ripkin: Growing up in New York my musical influences were the rappers that were in my neighborhood or in my borough. Hands down Notorious B.I.G. because you could take him and have him flow over anything no questions asked. I would also say other pioneers from New York, Rakim, and Slick Rick. But I would definitely say Rakim for his complex lyrical crafting.

Po: We met thru the world wide web lol so I wanted you to discuss the importance of the internet to artist.

Kil Ripkin: The internet is an extremely helpful and reliable tool for marketing and exposure. Today it seems to be a lot more about social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and more than going store to store with a tape. If you become an internet sensation the whole world now recognizes you, so the net is extremely important in the music business.

Po: What’s your current label situation? Do you have any current projects out?

Kil Ripkin: I am signed to Soulspazm Records out in New York. I have four projects completed and a handful of videos waiting to be released. The first of these projects will be released at the end of the summer. I got a mixtape coming out with Chicago producer, The Exceptionalist, Tony Roche. I also have a project coming out with Atlanta producer, Raticus, and of course the album, The Balancing Act. I also have an album finished with Torae for our group The Coalescence. Besides that I am doing collabs with a lot of cats, but I can’t really talk about it because it is still early.

Po: Thanks for stopping by homie, appreciate it, could tell us where we can check out more of your music?

Kil Ripkin: Check me out at myspace.com/kilripkin, 2dopeboyz and type Kil Ripkin in.
Coney Island rapper, Kil Ripkin releases a conscious single, Mind Free that samples Goapele’s Closer and is produced by Don Newkirk. I could see this single on a mixtape with dead prez and A-Alikes. Is it a track you could see in your Ipod playlist? Lemme know.

We have an EXCLUSIVE LEAK for you this weekend from a GossibooCrew featured artist named Kil Ripkin the Genereal. He got a hot joint, with a smooth sample from Floetry and a street worthy style rap. The song is titled “Aftermath pt 1″ and “Mind Free,” from the new album The Balancing Act – Soulspazm Records - dropping in the summer. The shit is hot, really feeling it, definitely a car driven joint this summer on the way to the beach or chilling with your girl, you know romantic type ish.

Kil Ripkin spits he’s raps respirator and by what we listing too Kil is on his way. He’s the era rap infliction ready to take the airwaves.

But I guess you asking who is Kil Ripkin the Genereal aka the Ghetto Correspondent? He’s many things, but take a minute and see what Kil is all about. Interview coming soon.

Hip Hop is a culture that was created by and for the people, and when it comes to exhibiting that love and passion for the art, nobody displays it like Kil Ripkin the Genereal, AKA the Ghetto Correspondent. Growing up in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn N.Y., Kil set out on his journey to be the next big thing in Hip Hop. Kil began as a solo artist quietly establishing his name as some one to be reckoned with, earning the respect of his peers alike.

Kil began producing his own music working under the tutelage of his big Bro., songwriter, producer and engineer Don Newkirk (Smoking Heads). Kil also sharpened his skills working with long time engineer Filthy Rich (Yosumi Entertainment). Quickly establishing himself as an up in coming producer going under the name of (Storm) thru out the five boroughs, Kil hooked up with Boot Camp Affiliates Mighty Real and Rebel X. They formed the rap alliance called the “Supreme Forces” who featured the likes of Space, Telepathic and the Young Veteran Torae. Working on a Rebel X solo project, Kil and Reb decided to form the New York underground group “The F.E.D.S”.

The two were a deadly combo releasing several underground hits including the single released on Step in Deep Productions, titled “Drama” featuring Rasheeda. Kil has put in work with several other artist and groups like, I.G.T formerly of loud records, Get Doe Entertainment, Stix (Horror City), Kings Kounty Records, The Plague, and several compilation albums most notably “Game Over” released on Yosumi Records. Credits also include co writing and producing songs on 40 Acres, “Get on The Bus” and “Crooklyn” soundtracks, and most of the production on Torae’s “Coney Island Finest” mix tape.

After years of producing for several artists and the split of the FEDS, Rip turned his focus back to his solo career and started working on the revolutionary banger “Black Power Black Love” The Buz CD, with production from Kil, Don Newkirk and Valentine of I.G.T. The album became the theme music for the revolutionary Uhuru movement that was taking place in Brooklyn, and Kil’s passion grew even more to get his message across. Kil’s Stage prowess filled many venues thru out the New York area which made his shows the place to be. Off the success of Black Power Black Love, Kil and his Coney Island brethren Torae continued to groom there work together and with the help of then manager (Squirrel) Attic Entertainment, they linked up with up and coming DJ Vega Bennenton and his partner Wally Suede and together they formed the Hip Hop Super Group The Coalescence.

They released the underground hit “Promises” and the group was nominated for two undergroung music awards including song of the year. The Co. will be back in the lab soon but until then expect a lot of heat from the Genereal starting with the “Balancing Act” produced by Mikal Evans (Deep Rooted) Raticus and Eric G. The Music is soulful, truthful, spiritual and rebellious. Surely after one listen to Kil Ripkin you will realize very quickly what Hip Hop truly sounds like.
