go see this thing if you like ass kicking ninja action.  dude, there’s a scene where they attack the ninja compound with tanks and hummers!  ya got ninja scattering little shadowy cockroaches.  cockroaches that throw ninja stars with deadly speed and accuracy.

12. Watched New Moon and loved every single second of it. Seriously, they did something amazing to the book.

Demorei o máximo que pude para ver esse filme. Para falar a verdade, eu nem queria ver esse filme. A razão? Medo. Meu maior medo era o hype imenso que esse filme carregava em cima dele. A fita nem tinha começado sua vida nos cinemas e todos já diziam que seria “o melhor filme de todos”. Confesso que sou um pouco (pouco é muito e muito é pouco) chato. Principalmente quando gosto de algo. E sempre gostei dos filmes do Tarantino. Não, eu não acho o cara um gênio. Acho um ótimo e divertido diretor. O maior triunfo do Tarantino é saber lidar bem com o clichê. Algo que todos tentam e a maioria fede ao fazer tentar fazer isso. Tarantino trabalhava numa locadora. Ou seja, estava rodeado pelo clichê o dia inteiro. Afinal, os filmes que costumam passar nas televisões das locadoras são, em sua maioria, algo que se tornou clichê com o tempo. Junte se a isso o seu talento e ironia referente à violência e você têm um ótimo diretor. Seu primeiro roteiro foi “Assassinos por Natureza”/ “Natural Born Killers” (com Juliette Lewis, Robert Downey Jr. e Tommy Lee Jones no elenco) o qual Oliver Stone dirigiu. Talvez seu maior roteiro, mesmo sendo bastante revisado pelo próprio Stone.

O primeiro roteiro de Tarantino já mostra o quanto ele é light.

Também não vi Burn After Reading/Queime Depois de Ler pelo mesmo motivo. Muito é falado antes de o filme ser lançado. E também é de um dos meus cineastas favoritos. O fato dos irmãos Cohen terem entrado no mainstream me assusta até hoje.

Quem já acompanha as peripécias deste blog sabe que costumo mais descer o pau do que elogiar: tirando Y: The Last Man, Ren & Stimpy e Billy & Mandy eu fui só reclamações e maldições. Mas de qualquer forma, não fiz tantas resenhas assim…

Então já deve ter alguém pensando: lá vai esse chato descer o pau no filme. Mas…

…o filme é muito bom! É melhor que Pulp Fiction? Não! É melhor que Kill Bill? É igual e diferente do mesmo modo. Ver um filme do Tarantino tem sempre uma sensação parecida, mais ou menos como ver Kubrick pós-Lolita. A sensação é parecida e os filmes não. Tarantino já conseguiu deixar sua marca no seu modo de fazer filmes. Não sei como explicar, mas quem conhece o trabalho dele já sacou o que eu quis dizer. Assim como Kubrick tinha aquele modo de sempre valorizar aqueles sorrisos aterrorizantes, cenas no banheiro e outras coisas. Não me entendam mal. Não estou comparando um com o outro. Kubrick era um gênio. Um dos maiores da história do cinema. Tarantino ainda não o é. É ótimo e divertido. Mas não sei. Ainda falta algo e tive a impressão de que com Bastardos Inglórios ele deu mostras de que está à procura desse algo mais.

Bastardos Inglórios é o chamado Historical Fiction (ficção histórica). A fita se passa na Segunda Guerra Mundial (entendam que esse era mais um dos meus medos: Nazistas de novo?!). Mas Tarantino não esgotou ainda mais o assunto. O nazismo e a guerra podem passar apenas como coisas secundárias.

Agora, para não falar só de Tarantino, o elenco foi muito bem escolhido. Começando com Christoph Waltz (“Ordinary Decent Criminal” / “Um Criminoso Decente” – vejam esse filme também!) no papel de Hans Landa. Waltz é o melhor no filme. Sua atuação é bárbara e mereceu o Cannes de melhor ator. Michael Fassbender (“Bando of Brothers” e “300”) como Lt. Archie Hicox (o inglês que troca tiros na virilha no pub) muito bem também. Eli Roth (demorei a lembrar quem era esse doidão. Ele faz parte do grupo Splat Pack, que é um grupo de cineastas de filmes de terror que decidiram voltar a fazer filmes de terror mesmo – pesados, “Saw”/ “Jogos Mortais” é de um diretor desse grupo. Eli Roth é o diretor de “O Albergue” que, confesso, não sou fã) é Donny Donowitz / O Urso Judeu, impecável sua ultima aparição na qual ele atira em Hitler até o rosto dele virar pedaços de carne moída no liquidificador. Diane Kruger (a Helena em “Troy” / “Tróia” e Abigail Chase em “A Lenda do Tesouro Perdido”) interpreta Bridget von Hammersmark. Diane Kruger já foi uma modelo de sucesso na década de 90, se não estou enganado. Que bom que deixou de ser modelo, parece que sob a correta direção e em um filme bom (diferente dos citados na qual ele atuou) ela tem talento. Daniel Brühl (“Adeus Lênin” e “The Edukators”) é Fredrick Zoller, ou o herói de guerra alemão. O cara é realmente bom. É só ver os filmes que o cara fez. Til Schweiger (“Tomb Raider” e “Rei Arthur”) é  o alemão que muda de lado. O cara no filme é hilário. Não sabia que o cara era bom (afinal olha os filmes que eu citei que ele fez), mas ele o é. Mélanie Laurent faz Shoshana. Essa eu não conhecia, mas também é muito boa. Omar Doom é Omar Ulmer. Gedeon Burkhard é o tradutor dos Bastardos. B.J. Novak (“The Office”) é o Little Man (não lembro bem como ficou em português, se foi Pequenino ou algo do tipo). Mike Myers (o Austin Powers) é o general inglês que comanda a idéia do assassinato de Hitler. Rod Taylor (“A Máquina do Tempo” de 1960, baseado no livro de H.G. Wells) faz o Wiston Churchil. Denis Menochet (“Hannibal Rising”) faz o fazendeiro francês do inicio do filme. Christian Berkel (“Operação Valquíria”) é o barman do pub onde rola aqueles tiros na virilha. Jacky Ido (esse eu não conheço) faz Marcel. August Diehl (“The Counterfeiters” e “The Ninth Day”, ambos alemães) é o oficial da Gestapo, especialista em sotaques, que troca tiros na virilha. Alexander Fehling (“And Along Come Tourists”, também alemão) é o cara que está comemorando o nascimento do filho onde dão tiros na virilha. Sylvester Groth é Josef Goebbels, ministro da propaganda de Hitler. Groth também interpretou Goebbels na comédia My Leader – The Truly Truest Truth about Adolf Hitler (também alemã). Quem também interpretou Goebbels foi Martin Wuttke – que é Hitler no filme de Tarantino – no filme Rosenstrasse (alemão também, mas se tiverem tempo – e paciência para achar – vejam). Julie Dreyfus (Sofie Fatale em “Kill Bill”) é a interprete francesa de Goebbels. O curioso é que parte do elenco desse filme são também diretores. Um exemplo disso é Enzo G. Castellari que no filme é um general nazista. Castellari é um diretor italiano, conhecido pelos seus Spaghetti Western como Any Gun Can Play, Kill Them All and Come Back Alone, Seven Wichesters For a Massacre e,…, The Inglorious Bastards – Quel maledetto treno blindato. Os bastardos de Castellari e de Tarantino são parecidos. Com certeza o filme de Castellari inspirou Tarantino. Os Bastardos no filme de Castellari são soldados americanos que estão sendo levados para uma prisão militar quando um ataque aéreo alemão acaba os “soltando” ao matar todos os guardas. Os soldados decidem fugir e acabam fazendo parte de um plano que consiste em roubar o giroscópio de um foguete V-2 nazista que se encontra em um trem extremamente protegido por nazistas.

The Ingloriou Bastards de Castellari.

Ué, e o Brad Pitt? Bom, Brad Pitt é um grande ator. Quando ele não faz papéis de heróis entediados ou de galã supersexy (como Aquiles em “Tróia” ou Sr. e Sra. Smith) ele manda muito. É só ver filmes como Thelma & Louise, Across the Tracks, Kalifornia (acho que foi aí onde ele aprendeu esse sotaque que ele tem em Bastardos Inglórios), Interview with the Vampire, Lendas da Paixão, Seven (Sete Pecados Capitais), Os Doze Macacos, Fight Club (Clube da Luta), Snatch (mais uma vez ele faz um sotaque genial), Babel, …, deu para entender, né? Ou seja, quando o papel e o filme é bom, ele arrebenta. Por isso não vou ficar falando o quanto ele foi bem nos Bastardos. Tentei falar mais dos outros que, para a grande maioria, são desconhecidos.

Como não poderia deixar de ser…

…em filme de tarantino nunca falta sangue e nem Samuel L. Jackson. Ele não atua, mas é o narrador. Poucas vezes narra, é verdade, mas ele está lá.

Minha conclusão é: se não viu, veja por você mesmo. Se já viu, sabe do que estou falando.

I still think of them warmly.. The memories of times I had with them- only the fond ones remain .. The dark stormy ones are relegated to the back of the mind.. Far away in memory.. In any relationship there are dark and bad times- just as there are good and glad times.. This is to you Seamus’s Angels.. As for my previous entries- anything written in this blog should be taken not with a pinch of salt- more like the salt cubes they give cows to lick..

They were grand times.. The times we had.. I write this in memoriam.. Hoping that they will be more than memory..

I remember a time when I wanted to cause them nothing but pain- yet through immense self control I held back.. But when the time came, it was none other than I who struck the blade in deep.. And then pushed it further .. Satisfied was I? Yes.. Immensely .. But then like Kill Bill’s Bill.. I felt sorry for the choice I made .. Allowing my anger to control me instead of the other way around .. And the true test of any choice is whether you would make it again given a second chance.. Knowing what I know now- I don’t think so..

But as a dear comrade once said to me- you had fun, you had games and much more… Now its time to grow up.. And I have to say I agree.. That life was an innocent unworldly life- I am not insulting it- it was just..for lack of a better word- naive – perhaps immature.. There I’ve said it.. I know self pity is strong in me, young Sea-mus-walker..(lets see how many of you get that joke)

I guess this list reveals my penchant for sci-fi and Quentin Tarantino.

Blood: The Last Vampire 2009

Starring Gianna, Allison Miller, Liam Cunningham, JJ Feild, Koyuki, Larry Lamb, Colin Salmon and Andrew Pleavin

    I had been wanting to see this, as I am a big fan of the original anime and I was wondering how it would translate to a live action medium.  The transition from anime to live action film is handled very well.  This version of the story reminds me in some aspects of both Kill Bill and The Machine Girl.  It has wild action sequences and very bloody moments.  Some of the elements of the story are also very reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  The whole high school motif and the whole idea that there is a shadow group that is behind the war on vampires, while protecting the human race by keeping them in the dark.  The cast is very good too, Gianna is a great presence as Soya and Miller is very reminiscent of Amber Tamblyn.  The fights in the film are fast and frenetic and have you transfixed throughout the entire battle.  It is also great how creative  some of the fighting is. 

    The plot basics are this, it is 1972 in Japan and a new student, Soya (Gianna) enters the high school in a U.S. military installation.  She is not what she seems though, she is far older than she looks and is on a mission to destroy all vampires and is hunting Onigen (Kyoko), the master of all vampires.  She comes to the rescue of the General’s daughter, Alice (Miller) who is attacked by 2 vampires that are posing as high school students.  Soon, Soya has created a bond with Alice and they are now united together to stop the vampires and to finally defeat Onigen.  There are many obstacles, from more vampires too a betrayal of Soya from the Council member that is moving up his own agenda.

    This was a fun as hell film.  Nohan’s direction is great, he has a real touch for action scenes and also uses the dark and the alleyways of Japan very well.  The scene outside the bar is an excellent example of this, it is dynamic and pulse pounding.  The script is taut as well, the relationship between Soya and Alice is very humanistic and you really empathize with them.  The villains are quite good too, especially the slimy Council member who tries to eradicate Soya.  The cast is very good, Miller is very good as the human center point, Alice.  You feel her issues and root for her.  For the most part Gianna plays Soya as a cipher and that works really well.  I also liked the small part Salmon played as the fencing coach, who is more than you think.  The SFX is amazing, they use both CGI and practical effects really well.  With plenty of blood flying this will be a great treat for grue fans.  For fans of the original anime and vampire films in general this one is highly recommended.

Tenia tiempo sin ir al cine solo y es algo que me gusta. Sabes que película quieres ver, a que hora es más conveniente, llegas con el suficiente tiempo para acomodarte en el que consideras el mejor lugar de la sala y no corriendo, sabes que no es necesario una comida antes/durante/después de la película, no explicas lo que está pasando en pantalla a quien te acompañe, te aplastas y te echas tus flatulencias sin preocupación.

Bueno, pues en plan solitario llegué a ver “Inglorious Basterds” lo nuevo (aunque ya tiene rato en cartelera) del buen Quentin Tarantino, un director que tiene un estilo muy definido y grandes películas realizadas.

Como todos saben, y si no se enteraran, trata una versión alterna de lo que sucedió en la II Guerra Mundial; tan sólo imaginar a Tarantino y la II Guerra Mundial era más que suficiente para que llamará la atención. Esta película cuenta con la presencia de Brad “Me sobran niños” Pitt, Melanié “Pocos sabian de mi existencia pero estoy bien rica” Laurent, Eli “Hice la mamada de Hostal” Roth, Christoph “Saldré en The Green Hornet” Waltz y varios involucrados más que ni puta idea de quienes sean; pues Tarantino tuvo la grandiosa idea de que si cada personaje fuera de la nacionalidad correcta, no queria imitaciones de acentos.

Got Milk?

Todo comienza cuando Hans Landa, coronel nazi, visita a Perrier LaPadite, granjero francés, del cuál se sospecha esconde judíos y Landa al ser conocido como “Cazador de Judíos” es enviado para ver si el francés dice la verdad. Después de tener una conversación, con el sello de Tarantino, LaPadite termina asustado por Lans y ve por el bien de su familia por lo que delata a los judíos que escondía bajo su piso. Si bien los soldados disparan hacia los refugiados una joven logra escapar, Shosanna.

Me caso

Años más tarde Shosanna adopta la identidad de Emmanuelle Mimieux para evitar ser perseguida, además de que seconvierte en dueña de un cinema. Mientras cambia el letrero llega Frederick Zoller, soldado nazi que realiza una acción heroica por lo que le hacen una película, para exaltar el orgullo nazi, en la que él es el protagonista, quien en su afan de conquistar a Emmanuelle decide hacer la premier de su película en su cinema.

Shosanna siente desprecio por los nazis, por el ligero inconveniente de ser perseguida y el asesinato de su familia, por lo que las insinuaciones de Frederick le valen madres, pero se da cuenta de que en la premier altos funcionarios nazis estarán presentes por lo que decide cobrar venganza de lo que le sucedió a su familia asesinando a la mayor cantidad de nazis posible.

El wey de la izquierda creo que lo vi en "10 things I hate about you" ¬¬

Los Bastardos que le dan titulo a la película son un grupo de judíos -americanos, que son una especie de escuadrón sectro de la muerte, que se encargan de no solo matar nazis, sino de causarle miedo a los demás. Por lo que se hacen una de una reputación que le hace honor a su nombre.
Aldo Raine es el encargado de los Bastardos y su mano derecha es Utivich, Aldo es claro en lo que quiere y en lo que se van a meter:

Each and every man under my command owes me one hundred Nazi scalps. And I want my scalps. And all y’all will git me one hundred Nazi scalps, taken from the heads of one hundred dead Nazis. Or you will die tryin’.

Entre los Bastardos destaca Hugo Stiglitz, soldado que alguna vez fue nazi y quien gracias a su posición asesinaba a altos funcionarios de la SS, por lo que fue condenado pero en cuanto Aldo Raine se entero de él fueron a buscarlo y darle chamba, pues cumplía con el requisito de escabecharse nazis.
También en sus filas esta “The Bear Jew” un hijo de puta que gusta de jugar beisbol con los nazis, claro el trae el bat y los nazis son la pelota.

Cuando se enteran de que habra demasiados altos funcionarios de la SS en la premier de una película, en el cinema de Shossana, los Bastardos son enviados para hacer añicos a cuanto nazi se encuentren; envian un agente desde Inglaterra, Archie Hicox, para que les ayude a entrar al cinema sin llamar la atención.
Como van a a entrar de infiltrados contactan a una doble agente, Bridget von Hammersmark actriz que esta bien sabrosa, quien los cita en el sótano de un bar; donde se encuentran varios oficiales de la SS festejando el nacimiento del primogénito de uno de ellos. Debido a que van a entrar vestidos de oficiales alemanes los Bastardos que entraran serán los 2 que son nacidos en Alemania y Hicox que parece tener un buen alemán.

Todo transcurre con cierta calma hasta que tienen un problema los Bastardos con algunos oficiales, en esto sale otro oficial que estaba fuera de la acción y a quien también le llama la atención el acento del oficial enviado de Inglaterra, Hicox. Todo parece controlado, pero en un descuido de Hicox el oficial se da cuenta de que en realidad no son soldados nazis por lo que se arma una balacera donde la mayoría muere, sólo Bridget resulta herida en una de sus piernas.

Juegos para tomar

Debido a la muerte de las únicas personas dentro de los Bastardos que sabian alemán, Bridget piensa cancelar todo. Pero Aldo sabe que hasta Hittler estará en esa función por lo que a todo costa deben entrar para terminar de una vez por todas la guerra.

En el cinema se encontraran tres bandos, unos como carne de cañon y dos con el mismo objetivo: “Matar nazis”. Shosanna buscará la venganza, no le importa quienes esten en la sala, sólo que nazis moriran; planea incendiar el lugar con la ayuda de su amante Marcel. Y los Bastardos que buscan terminar la guerra de una vez por todas con bombas y balas.

Este cabrón es todo un hijo de puta, pero lo tendría como amigo =P

De eso trata “Bastardos sin Gloria”, de hecho la mayoría de lo que sucede en pantalla refleja la venganza de Shosanna y no tanto a los Bastardos; una lástima por que se ve que tenian para mucho más, el ver de que más eran capaces, ver a “The Jew Bear” o a Hugo en un par de escenas adicionales me hubiera gustado mucho. Landa es un hijo de puta y por mucho lo mejor de la película.

Por momentos creo que Tarantino exagera en las pláticas sin sentido. La sangre y la violencia es menor a la que esperaba, todo por los malditos posters llenos de sangre es que esperaba más.
La película es buena y recomendable, pero Tarantino no es cualquier director por lo que al compararla con otras de sus películas si sale mal librada; pero una película mediana de él es mucho mejor que la mayoría que hay en cartelera Es mejor que Death Proof pero no le alcanza a llegar a Reservoir Dogs, que varias partes parecieran de Kill Bill tampoco ayuda mucho. Es buena, pero esperaba mucho más.

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most controversial and most unique and visionary filmmakers of the last 20 years.  His films have such range and originality and they establish themselves as “clearly Tarantino.”  “Pulp Fiction,” “Reservoir Dogs” and “Inglorious Basterds” are some of my favorite films (all directed by Tarantino).  All of his movies stand alone as their own films.  All but the “Kill Bill” films, of which there are two.

The “Kill Bill” movies have a basic premise: revenge.  A woman (played by Uma Thurman), whose name is not completely known until the end of the second film, was wronged on her wedding day.  Actually, she was pregnant and while exchanging vows with her husband-to-be, a squad of assassins obliterates the attendees, the groom and many others in the church.  This entire scenario is not part of the film as a scene in and of itself, but rather it is told through flashbacks and dialogue between the characters.  Thurman’s character, referred to as “the Bride” in the first film, awakes after years in a coma to discover that her unborn child is gone and her life that she had known was no more.  She escapes a sadistic chain of events at the hospital she resided at for years and makes a list of the “assassins” that killed her loved ones.  And so, the story of “Kill Bill” really begins.

The two movies are titled “Kill Bill: Volume I” and “Kill Bill: Volume II” and even though they are the same story continued over the course of two films, they are in no way the same movie.  The styles are so completely different between the two that one may mistake them for being two different directors, but that’s the genius of Tarantino.  He’s able to make an homage to the kung fu films of the 1970’s (“Volume I”) and an homage to classic revenge westerns (“Volume II”).  These two styles and different films make the viewer attentive to the details and keeps them focused on the chain of events in the story, which is a tribute to the filmmaking style of Tarantino.

VOLUME I:

This film is the starting point of “the Bride” and her quest for revenge.  For this first installment, she makes a rendezvous at the house of Vernita Green (played by Vivica A. Fox).  The “meeting” soon turns into a kung fu fight that is nothing short of over-the-top stunts, but that plays to the effect and tone of this particular film.  My favorite scene in this “chapter” (the movie breaks up the scenes into clearly distinctive chapters, making it more involving for the viewer), is when Green and “the Bride” are in the middle of a sword/fist/table fight and a school bus pulls up in front of the house.  Green’s daughter walks into the house and the two women immediately try to act as though nothing is happening.  This is an example of Tarantino’s use of humor in intense scenes to break the tension.

Eventually, Green is killed and “the Bride” is off to kill the next person on her list: O-Ren Ishii (played wonderfully by Lucy Liu).  This confrontation takes the remainder of the film and the overly graphic, blood splattering showdown is so over-the-top that it’s not believable but almost laughable.  Again, this is the intentional style of director Tarantino.  The original 1970 kung fu films were not realistic and the violence was so fake that it was laughable.  This entire sequence between the showdown of O-Ren Ishii and “the Bride” features gravity-defying stunts and fast shot cinematography which gives the viewer the feeling they are right there among this chaotic blood bath.  As was the case with Vernita Green, O-Ren Ishii is defeated and “the Bride” continues her rampage of revenge, making her way closer and closer to the man that orchestrated the killings of her loved ones: Bill.  This is the end of “Volume I” and some may find this film to be so violent and so campy that the second film was not even an option.  However, I believe that this homage to kung fu films works.  The story is that of revenge and the characters, “the Bride” included, are so focused on their own personal gain.  The viewer must realize this and with this in mind, the movies become more of an enjoyable experience.

VOLUME II:

The second installment of the “Kill Bill” movies takes a complete turn and becomes an homage to western movies.  The name of “the Bride” is revealed as Beatrix Kiddo or “Black Mamba.” Beatrix continues her quest to take down Bill, the orchestrator of the mass killings on her wedding day.  But first, she has to take down Budd (or “Sidewinder”…played by Michael Madsen) and Elle Driver (played by Daryl Hannah).  Driver is the first to go in a shootout/fight scene similar to that of the Green/Beatrix showdown in the first film.  However, instead of taking place in a suburban home, it takes place in a hotel room and is more “western” looking in the shooting style.  Driver (perhaps the most sadistic of the killers) is taken down and Beatrix moves on to her next victim: Budd.

Budd is perhaps the “hippie” of the group in his laid back style.  He realizes that what he did was wrong, but he doesn’t feel remorse for his actions.  Budd also realizes that Beatrix is going to take him and everyone else down and that she “deserves her revenge.”  This doesn’t mean that he’s going down without a fight.  She shows up at his trailer house and obliterates him, leaving one target left on her list:  Bill (brilliantly acted by the late David Carradine).

Beatrix’s showdown with Bill is epic and the deep connection between the two is revealed.  I’m going to spare the details on this particular fight and the story developments that ensue, simply because I’ve exposed so many key points to the films that there should be some incentive to see these films.  Is Bill killed in the end?  Does Beatrix avenge her loved ones?  Is her daughter still alive?  Watch the movies and see…

The second film is not nearly as violent in the gory, bloody sense, but it still is graphic.  The use of violence by Tarantino is intense and the viewer should be aware that it is shocking at times, but it’s use is part of the cinematic effectiveness of his style.  Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” films are two distinctively different films but are the same story.  They are not his greatest films, but are definitely his most unique.  The acting is flawless.  Thurman is so convincing that we, the audience, actually want her to kill all these people.  Carradine is great with a subtle intensity and the chemistry between him and Thurman is really believable.  The supporting players, Madsen, Liu, Hannah and Fox, are all sadistically convincing.

The style is unique.  The soundtracks are great.  The “Kill Bill” movies are simply Tarantino.

One of my favourite songs from any movie soundtrack, this one’s another from a Quentin Tarantino film, Kill Bill.  I waver a bit, but usually, I’d say that it’s my favourite of Q’s works, with Pulp Fiction a very close second.

This song is rocking a sultry beat, and yet, the subject matter in the lyrics is not exactly pleasant.  In fact, it’s downright creepy, which makes it perfect for the film.  All the same, it soothes me in some strangely satisfying way, the melody lilting over my body, a sonic caress that lulls me into submission.  I also relate, in far too close a fashion, to the tale beneath the delicate lines.  Insomnia is an old friend, indeed…
