Anthony E. Zuiker ist der “Schöpfer von CSI“, wie es gross vom Cover prangt – und das merkt man.
In “Level 26″ erfahren wir, dass die amerikanische Bundespolizei Gewaltverbrecher in 25 Kategorien einteilt, von 1 für Gelegenheitstäter bis 25 für die abscheulichsten Serienkiller. Und nun raten Sie mal, warum das Buch “Level 26″ heisst…
Mit den schlimmsten Verbrechen beschäftigt sich eine Sondereinheit des FBI, die “Special Circumstances Division”, einer ihrer besten Agenten war Steve Dark. Doch Dark kam vor einigen Jahren dem schlimmsten aller Verbrecher zu nahe. Dafür musste er einen furchtbaren Preis zahlen – und quittierte den Dienst.

Dieser Verbrecher wird vom FBI “Sqweegel” genannt, er mordet seit Jahrzehnten, hinterlässt nicht die geringste Spur (da wären die Jungs und Mädels von CSI ziemlich ratlos!) und ist – natürlich – extrem grausam. Nun plötzlich wird er in die Kategorie 26 eingestuft, die es eigentlich garnicht gibt. Politischer Druck macht’s möglich, der Verteidigungsminister der USA fühlt sich angegriffen. Und so setzt er Darks ehemaligen Chef Riggins darauf an, Steve Dark wieder ins Team zu holen. Was noch keiner weiss: genau das ist Sqweegels Plan…

Natürlich ist “Level 26″ genau so überzeichnet, wie man es von Fernsehserien wie “CSI” kennt. Allermodernste Technik, hingebungsvolle Ermittler, gnadenlose Killer. Unser Held, Steve Dark, ist so nah an Sqweegel herangekommen, weil er sich in dessen Gedankenwelt einfühlen konnte, einfach wusste, wohin sich der Mörder als nächstes wenden würde. Warum das so ist, bleibt offen – allerdings hat der aufmerksame Leser nach Lektüre des Buchs eine ziemlich gute Vorstellung von der Ursache dieser “Seelenverwandtschaft”. Jedenfalls wird Dark wieder mit dem Fall betraut, weil er diese besondere Begabung hat. Nur blöd, dass er sie nicht braucht! Zweimal trifft er auf seinen Gegner – beim ersten Mal dank eines Handys, beim zweiten Mal dank einer aufmerksamen Kollegin. Nichts mit Einfühlungsvermögen. Jeder einigermassen kompetente (TV-)Polizist hätte das so hinbekommen.
Und überhaupt: der Gegner! Sich einen Kriminellen auszudenken, der schlimmer ist als alles, was man sich ausdenken kann, ist schwierig. Genau genommen geht es nicht. Auch nicht in diesem Roman. Sqweegel ist grausam, brutal, gnadenlos – aber das sind hundert andere Roman-Killer auch. Seine besondere Begabung liegt darin, in kürzester Zeit in winzigen Verstecken zu verschwinden, dort stundenlang bewegungslos zu verharren und dann plötzlich und bestialisch zuzuschlagen. Wie genau das gehen soll, bleibt der Fantasie des Lesers überlassen. Ebenso wie einige andere Kunststücke – wie zum Beispiel schafft er es, mit einer Kugel in der Schulter ungefähr drei Stunden schneller als der ermittelnde Beamte durch Amerika zu jetten? “Mit viel Geld” ist die wenig inspirierte Antwort. Aber eigentlich kann er es, weil es sonst mit der Geschichte nicht weiter geht. Es gibt einige solcher Situationen im Roman. Auch Sqweegels Motivation bleibt – selbst nach dem Show-Down – im Dunkeln. Hinter den ganzen Effekten verbirgt sich – nichts. Wer auf einen Roman in der Qualität der “Hannibal Lecter”-Bücher von Thomas Harris hofft, der wird masslos enttäuscht sein. Wer nur auf billigen Nervenkitzel aus ist, der könnte auf seine Kosten kommen. Denn schnell und spannend geschrieben ist “Level 26″ schon. Man darf nur sein Hirn nicht bei der Lektüre einschalten…

Oh, fast hätte ich’s vergessen: “Level 26″ ist ja die erste “Digi-Novel” der Welt! Heisst: etwa alle 20 Seiten erhält man einen Zugangscode um auf der Seite “level26.com” (nach einer kostenlosen Registrierung) einen kurzen Filmclip (“Cyber-Bridge” genannt) anzuschauen, der Teil der Handlung ist. Diese Filme sind durchaus professionell gemacht und vermitteln einige zusätzliche Informationen. Mein Problem ist dabei, dass ich keine Lust habe, ständig meine Lektüre zu unterbrechen um online einen Filmclip anzusehen. Also habe ich mir die meisten nachträglich angesehen. Nun kann ich sagen, dass keine wichtigen Informationen verloren gehen, wenn man sich die Cyber-Bridges schenkt. Einiges erscheint sinnvoller (z.B. die Schnecke aus Kapitel 62, von der im Roman nie wieder die Rede ist, deren Schicksal man aber in Cyber-Bridge 12 verfolgen kann). Wichtige Infos werden später immer noch nachgereicht. Wie zum Beispiel hier: Kapitel 66, Seite 279 und Cyber-Bridge 13 – exakt die gleiche Information erhält der Leser dann auf Seite 339, vorher spielt sie auch keine Rolle.
Ein besseres Buch wird “Level 26″ durch die “Digi-Novel”-Technik nach meiner Meinung nicht. Aber vermutlich richtet sich der Titel auch an eine Zielgruppe, der ich nicht angehöre – die kurze Leseeinheiten & multimediale Inhalte zu schätzen weiss…

“And that over there is the kill jar.”

Ben turned his gaze to where Daniel, his senior orientation officer was pointing. It was sat atop a worn coffee table, in the middle of a pile of strewn magazines and coffee mug rings. The jar was about half full with coins – all of them quarters.

“Why is it called the kill jar?” Ben asked.

“Well every time you perform a successful hit, you put a quarter in the kill jar, and at the end of the year whatever’s in the jar goes to our Christmas party.”

Ben nodded. “So, kind of like a swear jar? But instead of swears, kills?”

“You got it. But we don’t try to discourage people from killing the way swear jars do with swearing. Think of it as building a better party.” Daniel smiled, and Ben faked a smile back.

“So what about advancement opportunities? What are my chances at scoring a better job here?”

Daniel’s smiled faltered and he suddenly looked nervous. “Eh, well everyone has an opportunity to advance, but promotions are strictly… merit-based.”

Ben nodded. “So basically work hard and you’ll get noticed? How long does it typically take?”

“Well that’s entirely dependent on how…enthusiastic you are. You see when you are promoted, you take someone’s place, right? So that person you want to replace, he has to… disappear.”

It suddenly dawned on him. “So what you’re trying to say is, in order for someone to be promoted, you have to whack the guy whose job you want?”

Daniel grimaced. “Yeah, you could say that.” Ben nodded again.

“So… how many times have you been promoted?” He asked as they made their way to Ben’s cubicle.

“Twice so far, but can you keep a secret? I’m planning a third one sometime this week.”

“Interesting.” Ben said and sat down in my seat. Daniel said goodbye and left him alone in front of the blinking computer screen that outlined his first mission. He sighed and closed his eyes, Daniel’s words ringing in his head. The person that you want to replace has to disappear…

Ben turned to look at Daniel’s office. It was small and nestled in an out of the way corner of the floor. The walls were faded and the wallpaper slightly frayed, but hell, it was an office. An office that Ben would thoroughly appreciate.

Ben shook his head and looked back at the screen. There were contracts from jilted lovers or desperate crims facing a long prison sentence. In other words, boring, mundane contracts. He sighed and looked at Daniel’s office again.

“Ah, fuck it.” He got up and pocketed his pair of scissors, before making his way to Daniel’s office. He knocked on the door and in a few moments Daniel opened the door and let him in. There were voices, then silence, and Ben exited the room, straightening his tie. As he walked back to his cubicle, he passed the coffee table with the kill jar.

He paused for a moment, looking at the jar filled with money. Then he smiled, took a quarter out of his pocket, and threw it in.

REVIEW:

This one didn’t seem to have the flair that is usually associated with James Bond. Maybe it’s just because of the fact that I’ve watched too many movies and have a feel for gadgets. Either way this one was a gadget-less mission.

Bond seems to be on the verge of breaking down. He keeps irregular timings, he keeps making mistakes meant for a much lower class of me, and there is an aura of forgetfulness around him.

M is then given advice by a psychologist friend to allow Bond to recover slowly by giving him a mission that will bring him back to his senses. It is then that Bond is sent for a diplomatic visit to Tiger Tanaka in Japan who is a high honcho in the secret service. To retrieve something that England needs, Bond finds himself trapped in the necessity to overcome death itself by trying to kill a world-wide crimnal who harbors an Island of Death.

Abortion. Big topic these days. But why? Why should we be talking about killing? Murdering? “Oh it’s just a fetus!” No. It is a human. Just because you decided to go get pregnant and know you don’t wanna take responsibility ain’t the babies fault. So you need to grow up and mature. Don’t just kill someone because your lazy, and selfish. Also don’t use the excuse. I can’t afford it, Ect. ADOPTION!!!! There are many people out there who are physically unable to have a baby I am sure they would be more then happy to take him/her of your hands.. ABORTION IS WRONG!!!

How would you feel to never get the chance to Breathe? Or feed? How would you feel to never get to walk? Or talk? How would you feel to never have the chance to live? Or give? We watch the blood clump like the longer we concentrate on it the longer we’ll last. We’re afraid of that tinkling. All of this is circular. The Norwegian foreign affairs committee wants to bring the case of Martine Vik-Magnussen, where Farouk Abdulhak is suspected of raping and killing her, to the UN. As of now Farouk Abdulhak is hiding in Yemen, in his fathers house. There are no extradition treaty between Yemen and England, where the heinous crimes was committed, or between Yemen and Norway, the native country of Martine Vik-Magnussen.

The Yemeni government said earlier this year that they would do nothing with regard to this case, probably due to the fact that the the suspects father, Shaher Abdulhak, is one of the richest men in Yemen.

Our remarks: There is a tremendous involvement amongst Norwegians in general, and other people from all over the world, in this case. We all want to see the rapist killer of Martine Vik-Magnussen brought to justice, to stand trial and face the evidence. Only a coward with no honor would hide in his fathers house amongst woman and children.

Running up that Heel

J’aime les filles perchées, particulièrement sur de jolis et hauts souliers. Quelques centimètres de talon affinent la jambe, fusèlent la fesse et font léviter un peu ces charmantes proies, tout en les rendant moins véloces, ce qui facilite la chasse.

Enfin, moins véloces, ça dépend des filles, parce que ces derniers temps, j’en connais un paquet qui s’entrainaient d’arrache-pied pour améliorer leur départ canon, leur foulée, leur virage et leur passage de témoin pour briller à la 2e édition de la course en escarpins.
Je m’en veux un peu de ne pas avoir assisté à la course. Tout ça pour un regarder 22 chèvres en crampons se battre mollement pour un ballon, alors que ce n’était visiblement pas la semaine du beau football en France. On ne devrait jamais délaisser les jambes des filles pour les pieds carrés des footballeurs. D’ailleurs, au rythme où le PSG s’enfonce dans la crise hivernale, je pense que mon seul plaisir en me rendant au Parc sera bientôt d’admirer l’achat de stilettos hebdomadaire de la belle Danielle…
J’aurais dû me rendre au Palais Brongniard, pour la beauté du lieu, pour l’ambiance de toute cette jolie brochette de grands malades que draine perpétuellement l’équipe de dContract, pour voir la course, et pour m’extasier devant les filles du public, qui sortent en général leur plus belle paire pour rendre jalouses les copines et briller devant les objectifs.

You Need It To Live, But Too Much Will Kill You

Seldom in history has a product worn the horns of the Devil and the wings of an angel at the same time. Loved and respected because it provides the energy we need to work, to play, even to breathe, sugar is so important to our diet our bodies take several things we eat and convert them into sugars.

However, eat too much sugar and your body will blimp up and your organs will slowly but surely break down. Never has “moderate consumption” been so important.

But what’s “moderate”? How can we tell what’s too much?

Let’s look at an example.

In our example you will eat 16 teaspoons of refined sugar all in one short sitting. Don’t worry, it will be in liquid form. Sound outrageous? That’s how much sugar is in a 20 ounce bottle of cola. In every bottle.

In general, if you look at the ingredient list of products before you buy them and see some that end in the letters “…ose” you have various different kinds of sugars. Sugars come with other name endings, but “…ose” tends to be the most common ending in packaged foods we eat. Most of them are complex sugars our bodies break down into simple ones so they can be used to burn as energy.

Sugars, along with starch, are the basic carbohydrates. Inside your gut they all become sugars, ultimately simple sugars. What your body can’t use it will expel through your colon or convert to fat for storage.

Because our bodies can only convert a limited amount of sugar into fat at one time, if you are going to eat too much sugar, eat it in a binge. Most of it you will enjoy in your mouth and you will get rid of it in the toilet the next day. Eat a little too much sugar on a regular basis and your body will store it in special cells in your body known as fat cells.

The average American consumes 61 pounds of refined sugar each year. About 25 pounds of that would be in the form of candy. That’s just sucrose, though, and the number doesn’t include amounts of any other sugars we consume.

Sugar may cause your skin to wrinkle. Called glycation, blood sugar in the skin binds to collagen so the skin loses its elasticity. Cut out excess sugar consumption and your skin may retain its elasticity. No good or easy or cheap method exists today to help skin regain its elasticity.

There’s nothing new about the kind of sugar we eat. When Alexander the Great invaded India over 2000 years ago he was shocked at how the people managed to create “honey” without bees.

Sugar cane is a plant of hot climate countries. That’s why people who live in the tropics have had it sweet for so long. Andreas Marggraf discovered, in 1747, that the sugar in sugar beets was the same as that in sugar cane. Sugar beets can be grown in much colder climates than sugar cane.

The first sugar beet factory opened in 1802. Over half of the 8.4 metric tonnes of sugar used in the USA this year–no, seriously, make that 8.4 million metric tonnes–will come from sugar beets. Sugar beets are a form of beet with white sweet roots. Only the root is used to make refined sugar.

Getting back to soft drinks, the kinds with artificial sweeteners may contribute to obesity rather than prevent it. A study at Purdue University using rats had one group consuming soft drinks with artificial sweeteners and another with sugar-sweetened drinks.

The group that drank the artificial sweeteners consumed more calories from other foods than the sugar group. The study did not consider the controversial belief that long term consumption of the artificial sweetener aspartame might cause major diseases. Rats don’t live long enough.

Like many popular discoveries artificial sweeteners aspartame and saccharin were found by accident. Lab researchers working on projects having nothing to do with sweetening mixed some test compounds and decided to taste them.

Ask yourself what kind of researcher eats his own experiment.

The artificial sweetener Splenda came about in an even stranger way. The scientists were looking for a new insecticide. [I'll just wait here while you process that thought. Prepare yourself for the next part so we don't have to pause again.]

A lab assistant had been asked to “test” the compound, but he thought he had been told to “taste” the compound. Remember, they had been looking for an insecticide. [Good thing you prepared yourself for that.]

Table sugar certainly isn’t the sweetest taste around. A compound called lugduname is actually 200,000 times sweeter. [Do you wonder where the lab assistant is today that tasted that stuff?]

Sugars are compounds of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The simplest (simple sugars) are most commonly known as glucose, fructose and galactose. Table sugar (a complex sugar) consists of one glucose molecule and one fructose molecule fused together. Other complex sugars dance with different partners.

We don’t want to avoid sugars totally because they are carbohydrates, by far the most common organic molecules in all living things. [Unless you consider minerals to be "living," which is a whole different discussion.]

An eight-atom sugar called glycolaldehyde has the ability to react with a three-carbon sugar to form ribose, a major component of RNA (ribonucleic acid), which does the real work in living things while DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) takes all the credit.

Who cares? Glycolaldehyde has been found in an interstellar gas cloud near the centre of the Milky Way. [Stay with me here.] Glycolaldehyde may therefore be a precursor of life on our planet. If it’s in space, it might have been here.

That same gas cloud, by the way, contains ethylene glycol, which most of us think of as antifreeze. Which is sweet, but lethal, as many animals have learned when they licked up antifreeze leaks.

These are complex sugars. In deep space. We must at least hypothesize that they were synthesized in space. We haven’t yet guessed how that could happen.

Sugar can be used as more than a fuel for your body. Burn table sugar (sucrose) with some corn syrup and a bit of saltpeter and you have a popular amateur rocket fuel.

It’s also sometimes prescribed by doctors. Yup, you pay a dispensing fee to buy a product called “Obecalp,” a sugar pill made to FDA specifications. It may be prescribed for mild problems with a variety of symptoms but no clear therapy. [Spell the product name backwards.]

Not only is the “placebo effect” surprisingly real according to recent studies, the sugar itself may actually help clear up symptoms. Glucosamine works as an immunosuppressant (drug that lowers the body’s normal immuneã€€response) in mice.

Immune system suppression is a mixed blessing because while it can go crazy sometimes, such as with allergies, it also protects us from viruses and bad bacteria. The sugar alcohol xylitol can be used to prevent ear infections in children.

You better have a dose of Obecalp and think about this.

His favorite is El Tonayense, which is open the latest at night. He likes the way the owner leaves round blots of meat on the tacos, and then crisscrosses them with colorful lines of sauce. Well-measured. The owner must enjoy resting his head at night on the springy, well-greased burners. The killer thinks it’d b difficult to live in a house without another purpose. L’anteprima per la stampa del film di De Maria interpretato da Scamarcio e MezzogiornoIl regista: “Abbiamo girato in un clima pesante, hanno cercato di non farcelo fare”

Dopo un breve inizio che illustra il clima degli anni Settanta, la strategia della tensione, il protagonista Riccardo Scamarcio (il personaggio si chiama Sergio, sullo schermo il suo cognome non viene pronunciato) racconta la sua storia all’interno di Prima linea.

Raccontata con tono asciutto, con una sorta di fissità e di gelo emotivo che è la cifra stilistica scelta da registi e protagonisti.

Quanto al fatto che non si fanno analoghi film su un altro tipo di terrorismo, quello di destra, lei ha un’opinione ben precisa: “Essendo il nostro un Paese essenzialmente di destra, la sinistra si sente sempre in dovere di giustificarsi, mentre la destra ha l’arroganza di non farlo”.

A study of Serial killers and what motivates them

Okay now that I got your attention here’s what I think. serial killers are cultivated by parents who needed to abstain from giving life. There should be a test that parents should take in order to pass to have a kid because any asshole in this country and this world can have a kid but no one knows for sure what they are going to grow up to become unless we select each egg and sperm carefully (that’s one way of thinking) but that is not an answer. Why? Because in one family – there may be all good kids except for one and he’s the serial killer??? How do we explain that?

We can’t so like China who does not allow more than one child in a family I think that is what has to happen here in the USA. Otherwise we are going to start having to dump spermicide into our drinking water to sterilize the water so people won’t be able to give birth. This is what a doctor friend of mine suggested to me in 1990s after she had taken care of minority people in a local city hospital – she was disgusted by the clientele and their huge welfare families. Sickening; I am sure; what she suggests is questionable but plausible and I can see people giving it some sort of consideration.
