This is war.

No seriously, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 gives you that feeling that you are fighting for territory.

That every kill counts in the grander scale of things, that while you cautiously push forward or even make a daring renegade dash for the enemies base that you are making difference.

I’d been playing and enjoying the multiplayer on Modern Warfare 2 for a few weeks when I stumbled upon a link to a site offering access to the beta for Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Needless to say I leapt at the chance.

Graphically the game is stunning, despite the level being mainly desert – it has three sections to fight through, each with a slightly different flavour – and the destruction of buildings is something to marvel at (not for too long though or someone will kill you ).

The gameplay is as you’d expect, likewise with the controls – fairly standard.

They seem to have pitched it between Killzone 2’s more realistic heavy handling and Modern Warfare 2’s almost comedic light handling, which is (in my opinion) just about the right balance.

The inclusion of a selection of vehicles (tanks/jeeps/quads etc) is a great touch that adds to the proceedings.

There are a few problems – mainly a seemingly invisible force pushing you back (could be done on purpose if it’s supposed to be desert wind but still a bit annoying) and also the occasional glitch leaving me unable to walk or stuck trying to get in a door (which I was also actually having in the finished product of Modern Warfare 2 )

However it’s the beta so I’m guessing those will be straightened out by the time of release.

You get a few classes to choose from, all regular stuff (Medic, Engineer etc) – not sure how many different classes there will be in the final product.

However it’s the aforementioned destruction damage that means that nearly every round is different.

You can’t have a regular hiding place, at least not for long, because chances are if there is a hint that you’re there tank shells or grenades will destroy whatever cover you have.

For the record I have to also say that the beta is only one level and one game mode! Yes, it’s this good and that is all I’ve played.

I honestly haven’t touched Modern Warfare 2 since I played this.

To give this some perspective I offer a further viewpoint as well as my own.

A work colleague who is also on this beta said, having played multiplayer of both games, “I don’t think I’ll bother picking up Modern Warfare 2 now, might as well play this, it’s much better.”

I cannot praise it enough and I just hope it can maintain this level of awesomeness until, and beyond, it’s release in March 2010.

I had been meaning to write a piece on demos and then the guys from Epic Battle Axe discussed it on

I had been meaning to write a piece on demos and then the guys from Epic Battle Axe discussed it on their weekly podcast so I thought I’d better pull my finger out and get on with it!

Infinity Ward’s decision not to release a demo before launch for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 struck me as odd – I’m usually very suspicious of a game that doesn’t have a demo.

Got something to hide? Just not quite as good as everyone thinks? (Hi Prototype )

For sure Modern Warfare 2 probably doesn’t need a demo pre-release of the game with the hype it’s had but in most cases a lack of demo is often a sign of a weak game.

PES 2010 Demo: Unfinished

And sometimes even putting out a demo just makes things worse, especially as the demo is usually months old and sometimes not finished properly (hang your head in shame PES 2010).

But there is also a flip side to this argument. There have also been a few games where the demo just hasn’t done the game justice.

Take for example Batman: Arkham Asylum – one of my favourite games this year. The demo wasn’t great.

The makers were obviously trying to show off both the combat and stealth sections but for some reason taken out of the context of the game it didn’t really work.

Batman Arkham Asylum: Too good to fit into a demo?

I think some people were put off by that demo but hopefully the universally high review scores will have made them think again.

My good friend Hollow Snake always says he thought the Infamous demo had it right – give you all the powers and let you run riot.

Show what you could have if you get the game and stick with it. I can certainly see the logic but I’ve often wondered if that would overwhelm more casual gamers, who might be looking to get into a new title?

inFAMOUS: The way a demo should be done?

I know of at least one person that couldn’t be bothered to even finish the demo as there were too many control instructions.

I often prefer games that give you the first level (or some of it) to play through, like Killzone 2 or Brutal Legend. (Having said that I think Brutal Legend’s demo is pretty misleading – making you think it’s a hack ‘n’ slash rather than an RTS game)

Either way I’m glad that we are now given a chance to easily access demos and I am firmly in favour of them. To be honest they have been one of the best things about the PSN for me.

So what do you think? Does a demo often do more harm than good? Should it be a grass roots beginning experience or an all out glorious spree of the game’s potential?

As usual, I find myself on my soap box ranting about the gaming media. I can’t help it, with each and every bit of media being released by the gaming press this generation, the more fuel they add to the fire in regards to their complete lack of objectivity, consistency, and above all else, journalistic standards.

I’m not a journalists, nor do I consider myself to be one. I’m simply a guy that loves his video games, and loves talking video games with like minded gamers.

Last night, I got a chance to spend a good 3 hours with Modern Warfare 2, the latest FPS title from developer Infinity Ward, and publisher Activision. I don’t fall for hype, but it has to be noted that, considering that Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare was one of the biggest games of 2007, it’s sequel has garnered a fare bit of attention from the gaming media.

Many an outlet couldn’t contain the hyperbole in declaring MW2 the best shooter of 2009, 6-12 months BEFORE it’s actual release.

It also must be noted that 2009 saw the release of another rather huge FPS title; Killzone 2, an exclusive title for the Playstation 3. Killzone 2’s history is not as rosy as Modern Warfare 2’s and while I won’t go into too much detail, Killzone 2 was shown in CGI Target Render form that was too good to be true at an E3 many years ago. The gaming media and the gaming community alike did not believe the actual Killzone 2 game would look as good as the CG. In short, it DID, and a lot of people’s feelings were hurt. They tried to attack the gameplay, nitpicking things like controls, the war torn color palette, and the “meatheads with guns” protagonists. Despite all that, Killzone 2 is quite possibly the best FPS to release this generation. The multi-player component was also top notch, expanding upon elements introduced in FPS titles like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Team Fortress 2, and adding it’s own unique spin to it (like being able to cross-class your soldier, a Valor Points system, and more).

Other FPS titles, like Operation Flashpoint 2, were talked up before their release, but quickly pushed under the rug when their game play failed to surpass Killzone 2 and the upcoming Modern Warfare 2.

Well, now, Modern Warfare 2 is on the store shelves, the reviews are flooding in, and they are more than positive. They are glowing. The praise for the title is unending, despite some poor PR from Activision and Infinity Ward, as well as some questionable design decisions that have soured the mood a bit (ie, pairing down MP from 32 players to 18, and removing dedicated servers from the PC version of the game).

The reviewers are quick to praise Modern Warfare 2 for it’s gritty presentation, robust multi-player, tense game play, and amazing graphics that rival the recently released Uncharted 2.

After last night’s session with the game, I can’t help but think I’m playing a totally different game.

I’ll leave Uncharted 2 out of this, and stick with addressing FPS vs FPS, but I have to say I walked away from Modern Warfare 2 very underwhelmed.

The first thing you notice about the game is the rather poor voice-acting. I’ve played many a game with terrible voice acting, and Modern Warfare 2 certainly isn’t the worst, but I found the narrator’s attempts at a tough-sounding, gravelly voiced hardened soldier more comical than intense. The chatter from squad mates is pretty much relegated to mission only (which I assume keeps it realistic). The dialogue isn’t very inspired either, and lacks any and all characterization. It’s pretty much dialogue that sets up your next mission, or, in game, points you to your next objective.

But I’m not one to get hung up on dialogue and voice acting, so I easily shrugged it off, given that the game is about war, where keeping to the task at hand is more important than witty banter. After the initial cutscenes (which were just flashy images of a satellite view of the Earth and the names and logos of characters and battalions), I was really eager to get into the game and see the visuals that I had been assured were “amazing,” and “rivaled” games like Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2.

First, the good. The guns in the game look fantastic, with a great attention to detail, and are overall the high point of the visuals. I’m playing the game on a 40″ 720p Samsung, and while the graphics are sharp and clear and crisp, it only serves to highlight one of the game’s most glaring visual issues: poor quality textures.

Character models look good when observed from far away, but when you get up close and scrutinize them, they lack any real attention to detail. The faces are flat, with little to no real detail in their expressions. Their uniform details are flat as well, with all of the clothing looking like molded plastic with a little bump mapping thrown in to try and make it look like it has depth.

This lack of real detail is also evident in the environments. Like the character models, when viewed from a distance, the environments look rather good. When up close they are just as bland and flat as everything else. There is also very little real ambient details present that sell an environment as a believable place. There is some debris here and there that floats across the map, or snow flurries, or dust blowing across your vision, but because they opted to make the image super sharp and clear, it looks…fake. Which is a rather silly thing to say when talking about an environment in a video game, but it’s the truth. The environments just don’t feel like real locations. They feel like multi-player maps tied to a very flimsy story (there isn’t really anything in the way of story cutscenes, just briefings for the next mission, then off you go).

There are certainly uglier games out there, and don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Modern Warfare 2 is an ugly game, far from it, it looks rather good in HD, and visual effects like how the screen splatters with your blood when you are taking damage are solid, but when the gaming media is comparing it to, hands down, the two best looking console titles on the market in Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, well, you can’t blame anyone for having rather high expectations. Modern Warfare 2, in it’s own right, is a visually good game. It just simply doesn’t compare to Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2.

Beyond the visuals, which, again, I can brush off (it’s not like it looks like Legendary: The Box, or Conflict: Denied Ops; not even; Modern Warfare 2 DESTROYS those games hands down), I was then eager to play the game and get a feel for what has been talked up as the best FPS experience out there.

The first thing I noticed were the controls. They feel like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and most other FPS titles out there that try to emulate the smooth, “twitchy” controls of a keyboard and mouse. So, while Modern Warfare 2 certainly has smooth, responsive controls, it still feels like you are controlling a floating gun, instead of an actual human being moving about and grounded to his environment. I really liked the iron sight lock on, trick, which has players bringing up iron sights with the L1 button, and having it immediately “lock on” to the nearest enemy.

Which brings me to the actual game play of Modern Warfare 2. I can overlook a lack of interesting characters, or a deep, complex plot. I can even overlook visuals that are by no means ugly, but not the top of the industry as many have stated. But what surprised and disappointed me the most about Modern Warfare 2 was how completely uninteresting and uninspired the game play was.

It was almost as if the single player campaign was created using the Big Book of FPS Design Cliches. Even the open streets of Afghanistan amounted to nothing more than a corridor shooting gallery. I was willing to accept the more realistic take on warfare that MW2 was selling, until I had to flee enemies on a snowmobile in something that seemed ripped out of a James Bond flick, and very out of place for a game that, initially, was attempting to be a very grounded, realistic shooter. The moment that I managed to jump a 200 foot gap on my snowmobile is the moment my suspension of disbelief snapped.

The weapons in the game are standard FPS fare, so no complaints there. I mean, there are only so many weapons you can have in an FPS before it starts to feel samey (although the PS3 exclusive Resistance franchise is known for having unique weapons, like guns that can shoot through walls, put up force fields, and fire off tags that cause subsequent shots to flock to the tagged enemy; and yet Resistance is often called generic, bringing nothing new or interesting to the FPS genre…).

But I found the level design to be rather uninspired. It’s literally a by the book shooter. Even a segment that has your character deep undercover, and working with some Russian terrorists who are casually strolling through an airport, slaughtering innocent civilians by the boatload it seems felt like it was on rails and heavily scripted. Not to mention incredibly over the top for a game praised for it’s realism. The gunfights in the game are fast, as I imagine they are in real life, but they don’t have an impact on the player. I never felt white-knuckled, like I was getting by by the skin of my teeth, or that I was actually a part of a real war, with comrades fighting and dying beside me.

I can’t help but feel that Modern Warfare 2 and it’s flaws are given a free pass from the media. After all, the game has a 5 hour single player campaign. Multi-player, while still relatively the same as the first, has been paired down from 32 players to 18. Beyond new maps, there really isn’t much that Modern Warfare 2 is offering that you can’t get in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and yet the game is getting universal praise and adoration from the gaming media.

This is the same gaming media that called Killzone 2 generic, uninspired, with a weak cast of characters and excellent online. Killzone 2 is hard sci fi, with a deep, complex world, which is, unfortunately, barely skimmed in the narrative of the story. The main cast is most certainly weak, but no different than the “meatheads with guns” cast that is in Gears of War, and certainly more than the non-characters in Modern Warfare 2. The narrative is interesting enough, following a squad of soldiers on a mission to capture the Helghan Prime Minister Skolar Visari. They discover a few Helghan secrets, and the game ends on a rather ominous, if not thought-provoking note. Nothing so deep as Saving Private Ryan, but it’s more than just, “here’s your next mission kid, go get em!” like in the presentation of MW2.

Game play wise, Killzone 2 is hectic. Waves of Helghast soldiers try and take you down, using incredible AI and tactics that I haven’t seen in a console FPS game. The first person cover system (something new to the FPS genre, conveniently overlooked by the gaming media that harasses Killzone 2 for not bringing anything fresh or innovative) is surprisingly useful and well implemented, and the environments, despite being confined to the Helghan home planet, range from large, wide open bridges and valleys, to small corridors and rooms and factories. The single player campaign will also clock in at a good 10-12 hours. Over twice as long as Modern Warfare 2’s single player. The controls were also rather unconventional for an FPS, with characters and weapons having a heft and weight to them that had many people complaining about “sluggish” controls, when it was a design decision intended to increase immersion in the game’s highly detailed environment. It succeeded, but due to a bitter and jaded press, developer Guerrilla Games ended up issuing a patch that allowed gamers to adjust the controls to a more Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare style sensitivity.

The multi-player in Killzone 2 also supports up to 32 players (unlike Modern Warfare 2’s 18), and a class system that allows players to earn badges, which in turn can be used to customize a character more to their play style. For example, it’s possible to mix the Saboteur’s Primary Badge with the Scout’s Secondary Badge, and get a player that can disguise himself as the other team, and use the Scout’s scan ability to reveal the enemy team’s positions to his own team. Being able to mix and match the Primary and Secondary badges of the 6 classes was a unique feature for console FPSes, and yet it also went ignored or downplayed by the media. Killzone 2 also included “Skirmish mode,” which allowed players to seamlessly segue from one gameplay mode into the other without having to quit out into the lobby. For instance, transitioning from Team Deathmatch to Assassination to Search and Destroy was done in game, with no break in the game play. This forced players to think on their feet, and adjust their tactics to the new game mode on the fly. It made the online battles that much more exciting and unpredictable, but this was also ignored and downplayed by the press.

So, here, we have Modern Warfare 2 which barely iterates over the original release, has just as short of a single player campaign, and scaled back Multi-player, with bland, uninteresting level designs and characters, getting no shortage of praise and worship from the gaming media.

And on the other hand, we have Killzone 2, which defied all expectations, set a new bar for visuals in the console FPS market, and actually added to, and improved upon standard MP features by adding it’s own twist, and it was called everything from uninspired to generic.

There are media outlets that claim to value “originality,” and “innovation” in games when scoring it high marks, giving PS3 exclusives like Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted 2 lower marks for lack of originality and innovation, and yet those same outlets have scored near perfect scores to Modern Warfare 2, despite it’s lack of originality and innovation.

This isn’t a call out of Modern Warfare 2. Far from it. The game is most certainly a solid FPS title, despite it’s shortcomings. This is calling out the gaming media for being hypocrites and completely discrediting themselves and the review system with their double standards.

If you are going to call out a game for being “generic,” or “unoriginal,” or “uninspired,” then do the same for ALL games, and not just games you have a bone to pick with. Don’t give Modern Warfare 2 free passes on short length, downscaled multi-player, and uneven game design, but tear apart a game like Killzone 2, which features a long campaign, fully featured multi-player, and rock solid, tense game design, just because you have a soft spot for Modern Warfare.

This does more damage than good, because it encourages a lack of progress in the industry, while punishing the developers out there willing to try and do something new and different to help push the industry forward and keep it from stagnating.

There is room for FPS games like Modern Warfare 2 AND Killzone 2. They are different sides to the same coin, and both have their merits. You don’t have to tear one down to build up the other. No, Modern Warfare 2 doesn’t have to match Killzone 2 in graphics to be a good game, nor does Killzone 2 have to have the same exact controls as Modern Warfare 2 to be a good game.

Unfortunately, baiting the reader garners hits on their websites, so they continue to do it. They continue to build up hype for games, by calling them a “insert popular franchise here Killer,” and talking up unreleased games to the point where the gaming community is willing to believe what they have read and heard, without experiencing the games for themselves.

I had heard so much overwhelming praise and hyperbole for Modern Warfare 2, that my experience with the game was marred. I usually don’t take such hyperbole to heart, but when the review scores and statements from the press are saying a game surpasses another in all areas, you will most certainly go into the experience with a bit more expectation than usual.

I miss the days where there was less fanboyism in the gaming media, and more genuine gamers that were able to report on the games as they are, not as what they could, should, or would be if something or other had been done instead.

As it stands, I think they are doing a great injustice to Modern Warfare 2, as well as Killzone 2 with their questionable tactics, double standards, and outright hypocrisy. The fact that they don’t even seem to realize that they are doing it is the worst injustice of it all.

Guerilla Studios amazed us with Killzone 2 and we’ve been anticipating an announcement for the third game for quite awhile. According to an article from Connected Consoles, an employee from the game studio states Killzone 3 is in development and could be out by 2011, maybe even late 2010. Hopefully this title won’t take forever to hit the store racks like it’s counterpart.

Looking back through some old articles I came across this list of the best single player games on PS

Looking back through some old articles I came across this list of the best single player games on PS3: Linkage.

This list was only written in April and yet the time since has probably been the best 6 months of my gaming ‘career.’

Not only have some fantastic solo player campaigns been released but I have also caught up on some single player epics I missed when they came out.

I knew the list needed to be extended and improved, as too many great single player games were missing.

So here you go – the top 10 is now a top 20 and any game from the initial list has it’s original chart position in brackets. You can also check out my full reviews (where possible) by clicking the title of each game:

20. PROTOTYPE

In Prototype you take on the role of Alex Mercer as he awakens during his autopsy ,wondering what the hell is going on. He quickly escapes, realising he now has various superpowers.

Mercer needs to find out what the hell has happened to him and why New York is infected with a virus that has turned half the population into zombies.

Prototype is definitely a game worth playing despite it’s various faults – it was a blast to play through if a little frustrating at times.

19. RESISTANCE 2

After saving England in the previous installment Hale is back in business to rescue the U S of A – since his incapacitation the Chimera have launched a full attack on America and Hale, as part of the Sentinal squad (made up of soldiers injected with the Chimera virus but kept under control), have to step in and stop them in their tracks.

A hard hitting but fun first person shooter.

18. MIRROR’S EDGE (10)

Mirror’s Edge wowed everyone with it’s crisp, clean graphics and it’s unique first person perspective.

The view takes a while to get used to and it had a few really annoying parts where it was difficult to time jumps etc because of the view but Mirror’s Edge is certainly worth playing through as it offers a style of gameplay that is totally unique in the current games market.

17. RAINBOW SIX VEGAS (9)

If you like your first person shooters with a bit of brain behind the brawn then Rainbow Six Vegas may be the game for you.

With a good old fashioned SAS vs Terrorists style plot and lots of fun set pieces Rainbow Six Vegas is definitely worth a shot.

16. RESIDENT EVIL 5

For all it’s faults Resident Evil 5, taken as a whole, is a brilliant game and one that I would recommend. Graphically it’s stunning and while it isn’t a hugely difficult game you’ll enjoy playing through and unravelling the story.

It survives the huge expectation of following Resident Evil 4… just. This is a game that everyone should play as Resi comes to the new generation of consoles.

15. KANE AND LYNCH (8)

You take control of Adam ‘Kane’ Marcus, a criminal on his way to death row for crimes committed in Venezeula. Kane is busted out of his prison van by a mysterious group called The7 who he worked with previously. They think Kane stole the money from their last job and stashed it somewhere.

If he doesn’t get them the money back in three weeks his wife and daughter will be killed. Kane claims he doesn’t know where it is but he does know who took the cash and will hunt them down. And so begins a thoroughly enjoyable ride into the desperate life of Kane…

14. BATTLEFIELD: BAD COMPANY

Chock full of explosions and with some really impressive destruction of buildings etc, Battlefield: Bad Company is like a huge big budget Hollywood blockbuster.

It’s a great, mindless blast of a game. Add some memorable characters into the mix and you’ve got yourself a very enjoyable, and playable, package.

13. HEAVENLY SWORD (7)

Another game that didn’t garner the respect it deserves, primarily because it didn’t live up to the pre-release hype.

If you like God Of War you will like this game as it’s similar in style but it looks gorgeous in HD and I believe did a few bits (combos/blocking etc) better than the first two God Of War games.

12. ASSASSIN’S CREED (6)

In Assassin’s Creed you play through Desmond Mile’s repressed ancestrial memories as Altair in the Medieval Holy Land (with brief interludes as Desmond struggling to find out what is going on in the present day).

You will need to research targets and carry out assassinations using a variety of options – sword, hidden blade, knife etc.

This game is great fun and I’m looking forward to the sequel which is on it’s way shortly.

11. GHOSTBUSTERS: THE VIDEO GAME

Ghostbusters: The Video Game’s plot is essentially the third movie – set in 1991 you’re a rookie who’s been drafted in to help with the ever increasing ghost workload. A huge paranormal blast sets off a chain of events that only one group of guys can deal with…

For me Ghostbusters was a short (5 hour) game that had me chuckling and geeking out despite it’s flaws – it won’t be to everyone’s tastes but it has a good single player storyline.

10. KILLZONE 2 (5)

Killzone 2’s biggest achievement is, possibly because of the brilliant graphics, sound and AI, that you feel involved and become embedded in the Killzone universal whenever you pick up the pad.

It’s not perfect by any means but it’s easily the best first person shooter I’ve played and I recommend anyone with a remote interest in this genre to check this out immediately!

9. BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM

With some wonderful voice acting from the cast of the animated series, Batman: Arkham Asylum’s story moves at a good pace and familiar enemies are used to good effect throughout.

With such a vivid setting and a memorable selection of bad guys from Batman’s career it’s no surprise that Arkham Asylum is such a great game.

Despite the odds being stacked against it, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a quality title that has had a lot of care put into making it. I’d recommend this to anyone.

8. INFAMOUS

So good it’s the only game this generation I’ve played through twice (seeing it’s rating bumped from 8/10 to 9/10), Infamous is a great game.

You control Cole McGrath, a courier who just happens to be carrying a package containing an electronic bomb when it goes off, devasting the city. Somehow Cole survives and, after coming out of a coma, realises the explosion has given him electrical superpowers.

From there on out the city is your oyster and there is plenty to do as you try to track down the people behind the explosion.

7. BIOSHOCK

Bioshock has a great story to tell and it does it well with some interesting objectives and brilliantly designed levels.

There are several twists and turns in the plot, most of which are not obvious and it’s no surprise to me that a film version is in the works (although I believe currently suspended due to budget concerns).

Dark worlds like Rapture aren’t to everyone’s tastes but you really would be missing out on an awesome story if you decided not to book a trip to the underwater city.

6. GRAND THEFT AUTO IV (4)

One the biggest selling games of this generation GTA IV features the fortunes (and lack therof) of Niko Bellic – an immigrant arriving in the US at Liberty City to find empty promises and broken dreams from his cousin Roman.

As you work your way up the criminal ladder you’ll encounter all sort of dodgy characters and befriend even more.

Liberty City is a wonderful, if run down, place and Niko Bellic’s story is one you will enjoy playing through so make sure you pick this game up as soon as possible.

5. FALLOUT 3

After a tough few hours at the start you will find yourself rewarded greatly for sticking with this awesome FPS / RPG.

The story line sprawls across the world depending on your actions and you’ll find yourself taking a break from main missions to explore the wasteland or help out other characters.

I could go on and on about various things that happened and how cool it was, how great the story was or whatever.

But Fallout 3 is a game that needs to be experienced first hand and your story will no doubt play out differently to mine.

4. METAL GEAR SOLID 4 (3)

Hideo Kojima’s tale of Solid Snake’s final mission is a brilliant showcase of the Playstation 3’s power.

This is a game that often gives you three or four different ways of approaching things – whether you realise it or not.

Metal Gear Solid 4 rewards those patient enough to stick with it by giving them a great gaming experience, with some memorable boss battles, that they won’t forget.

3. DEAD SPACE (2)

Coming on somewhere between Event Horizon and Aliens, Dead Space is a third person survival horror game.

You take on the role of Isaac Clarke, a ship engineer who finds himself trapped onboard a stricken spaceship infested with an alien outbreak which is threatening to take over the ship.

This was one of the best games I played last year, it’s use of sound is immense and the fear of the unexpected they create is awesome.

I am not a big fan of horror movies or being made to jump all the time but Dead Space kept on the right side of all that by being unpredictable enough to be enjoyable as a ‘horror’ experience.

2. UNCHARTED: DRAKE’S FORTUNE (1)

Uncharted maps the journey of Nathan Drake as he tries to find the lost treasure of El Dorado encountering, among other things, rival treasure hunters and mercenaries.

The graphics are unbelievable and the gameplay is well paced and well thought out. The characters and story and really well conceived and Nolan North, who voices Drake, is absolutely spot on with his irreverent humour and wisecracks.

At its heart Uncharted is an action adventure game much in the vein of Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider but, and I say this as a fan of both of these, it is better than either of them.

1. UNCHARTED 2: AMONG THIEVES

Uncharted 2 is a complete gaming package. There is plenty of taking out bad guys, lots of puzzles and some wonderful dialogue.

Naughty Dog really have done a great job on the voice acting and the expressiveness of the character models. It is easily the best I’ve come across (though Heavenly Sword was a close second).

I won’t spoil the story but for those who don’t know, Nathan Drake gets pulled back into that murky world of treasure hunting for hire. I loved the story of this game – with a few twists I saw coming and a few I didn’t.

If you own a PS3 there is no reason not to own this game – if you only have an XBox 360 or Wii then get yourself a PS3 Slim and enjoy one of the most finely crafted games I’ve ever experienced.

—————————————————————————————————————

So it’s a double for Nathan Drake as he takes the top two spots with his exploration adventures.

With 5 new games in the top ten it’s great to see the wide variety of game styles on offer to PS3 owners these days.

Hopefully people out there will find this list helpful – feel free to drop me some comments below on the games or if you’d have put anything else in the list?

Killzone 3 is deep in development according to the December issue of Playstation: The Official Magaz

Killzone 3 is deep in development according to the December issue of Playstation: The Official Magazine. This information comes from the article entitled “Secret Games of 2010″.

“Insider slips reveal three big names you can already pencil for the next year. Killzone 3 is reportedly deep in development, Insomniac’s Full Moon Show podcast hints at a project we can only conclude is Resistance 3, and a Treyarch employee’s online mentions a Call of Duty: World at World sequel.”

I don’t know if a 2010 release of Killzone 3 is a good idea. Killzone 2 is still fairly new and fresh. The 2nd installment of Killzone came 5 years after the first, creating quite a buzz among gamers who enjoyed the original. Killzone 2 has the best graphics to date and an awesome campaign story. I think this is mainly because they basically had limitless time to perfect the game. The game basically came perfect out of box with a few updates. Guerilla Games has kept up the game releasing some DLCs and actually listening to the Killzone fan community. I am looking forward to a Killzone 3, but not this soon. I would like to see a 2011 or 2012 release personally or maybe even later. This is of course just a rumor, but it’s in Playstation’s magazine. I don’t see why Guerilla would want to release the next game so quickly. The only reason I think would be pressure from Sony. Sony obviously wants to beef up it’s exclusive releases, and 2009/early 2010 has a pretty good lineup. I think they can do without a Killzone 3 release and just give Guerilla the time it needs to make another perfect game.

It is time to go in the backlog of shit. 2009 is the year for Sony, which triple A titles from Infam

It is time to go in the backlog of shit. 2009 is the year for Sony, which triple A titles from Infamous to Uncharted. Well it is pretty much those two are the big hitters. One of the most overrated and worst game I have ever played. Words can explain how bad it is. Well here is an attempt; it is so bad, putting the sun right on your eye while being sucked off by a black hole knowing that you will never see your penis again. Well that was worth a shot, now the review.

Killzone, spoiler, is rated F for fucking retarded.

Let’s break down why it is retarded. Remember I do the $5 per hour? Killzone is a $5 game with the worst multiplayer I have seen. It takes from everything then puts it into shit and poops out more shit. Anyway, the game is too short for a $60 game. The final time I put in was about 7-9 hours, 2-4 hours of dying. Game is too fucking hard. Upside, the story is quite cool. Brain Cox is the voice for the main villain. He does an amazing job.

Spoilers?

Some shit goes down; you invade a planet that invaded you first. You land in the shit and shit doesn’t go well. You think you guys are winning. You follow some chick to the outland to destroy a power plant. Bitch gets caught. You try to rescue her. Your team gets fucked up. Nuke goes off kill everyone. You go to the capital by a stupid train. You get to the main palace and do a 2 hour boss fight where waves of stupid guys come out with rocket launchers. Once you done with the waves, you get to the guy second in command. Shit is retarded beyond belief. He has cloak and does instant kill if he gets close. I played it on easy.

Spoilers are above so read it for the damn story

Now it goes downhill from here. Shit upon shit of shit is to come. Controls are just utter shit. I don’t understand how people can play this game. Throughout the game I am fighting the controls. Point, they need to update the PS3 controller if they are going to do more shooter games. PS3 controller is only good for 2D games. We live in a 3D world and a stick closer to thumb, like the 360 controller, is needed. Who the fucks binds melee to look stick button, R3.

Install the fucking game is not possible. They want you to do loads every fucking turn. It is just retarded. I would rather wait 20 minutes of install and do something else instead of have 4sec load times every fucking where.

Weapons are just utter shit. Rock launcher is shit. The enemy machine gun is just utter shit. All the fucking weapons are shit except the ally one. Fuck I don’t remember the name. It is the one that has the scope thing. It is nice and balanced. Shit, they have this grenade launcher that is just stupid as hell. You would think the grenades would explode on impact. Nope, it is timed.

Vehicles are pretty cool when you use them. Just the one mission where you take a mech and blow shit up. It is not cool really. It is retarded because you are so slow and weak.

Multiplayer is the shit of all shits that takes the shit crown. I don’t know what the fuck they were thinking. It is just too stupid. What happens is you have 5 game types: TDM, VIP, CTF, Hold Point, Search and Destroy. Be default they are 5 minutes a mode and the server will run through all 5. It is too hard to explain. It is just stupid shit. Before I stop playing, most people were playing TDM. What is retarded is the developers don’t understand that the other modes blow. They made it so the first team to 100 points in TDM wins. On a busy server, that is done in a few minutes. You can take more time loading the server than playing.

They also ripped of a class system. Instead of being balanced, they make them all unbalanced. You get new ranks with ranking up and the higher the rank the more overpowered the class is. They have a sniper class that can go cloaked and just cause a bunch of bull shit. The last class, the saboteur, is just new levels of bullshit. It is like the Team Fortress 2 spy except bullshit on the highest epic levels. It can disguise as the enemy, just like the spy. Here is when it gets bullshit; it has the best gun in the game with a high magazine size, shoots fast, and accurate. And the cherry on the cake; when you disguise, it takes a few seconds to change to the original state. This is just amazingly shit when you are on a friendly fire server, which is pretty much all the servers. A saboteur can be shooting you and you don’t want to shot back because you don’t want to take the pointless. There is a shit ton of people that team kill in the game. Just amazing.

Download content is pretty much the norm for games now, especially for FPS. Well this shitty game has some shitty DLC. Fucking rip off too. The game comes with 8 maps then they released 3 map packs with 2 maps per pack. Halo 3 has 3 map packs with 12 maps for about the same price as the Killzone 2 map packs. It is just a rip off on epic level. Killzone 2 is supposed to be the Halo 3 killer. From what I have read, no more map packs are coming for Killzone 2

So, the final countdown is here. This is one of the worst games I have ever played and maybe the most overrated game. As I stated in the ODST review, too many reviewers skip on shit or something. How are these games I review are so shitty for me but great for the rest. Also I am calling this the Shit Review because in a 1,051 word review, I have said shit 30 times. 31.

KILLZONE 2 = F-

I have traded in this game at Game Stop for $30. From what I have seen when I last played the game, no one plays compared to when it was first released.

Not long ago… (Ok, quite long ago judging by the apparent death of this blog in recent months

Not long ago… (Ok, quite long ago judging by the apparent death of this blog in recent months.)

I’ll start again…

A while back Giles raised the point of fanboyism. I responded to this post with the story of my resisting the PS3 and how i went from being a Sony fanboy to a hater.

My resistance to the PS3 was pretty much one part feeling of betrayal and two parts baulking at the price tag, with the second definitely contributing to the first. This meant that when the PS3 Slim came along, what was once stubborn refusal soon gave way to a nerdish desire. I had always coveted Little Big Planet and have been a big fan of the Sony exclusive God of War series, so having an opportunity to acquire these, or at least the console that would let me play them, and at a more palatable price, got me down to Game and putting down a preorder.

In the time after getting it, i’ve restricted myself to PS3 exclusives, favouring the Xbox for the cross-platform games due to having more Xbox owning friends. I’ve not done the maths but it strikes me that there aren’t that many must have PS3 exclusives. I picked up Little Big Planet and Killzone 2 immediately, and have regretted neither. Shortly after i also got Uncharted : Drakes Fortune, Infamous and Ratchet and Clank : Tools of Destruction. Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank have had considerable play time, Infamous considerably less (due mostly to the outstanding quality of the other games when compared to it!)

It didn’t take me long to get reacquainted with the PS3 controller, very familiar, light and a good rumble pack, but let down by stubby lower shoulder buttons – i guess i’m spoilt by the great big triggers of the Xbox 360 controllers. I did find that for £3 handy plastic extenders could be bought that made them a lot more user friendly.

Getting online was pretty easy and completely free, and the online store uses real money, so no guessing how much you’re actually spending when using it. The web interface is usable and allows access to both iPlayer and Youtube, which is nice.

It’s also practically whisper quiet which means little to no distracting whirring when playing a stealthy part of a game – i always find that a bit of a mood breaker on the Xbox, even when i think i’ve got used to it.

All this said, i’m quite aware that it doesn’t appear to be an essential purchase. If you’ve got an Xbox and are focussed on the games available for it, then you can happily live in ignorance. However, if, like me, you’ve looked at the world of games and seen several gems that will always be out of your reach and find it hard to live with that, then i would say go for it. There’s very little comparable to Little Big Planet and the upcoming Uncharted 2 on the Xbox. It’s also free to go online, but with sparse to non-existent party and comms support. (Surprisingly a mixed blessing as i’m also yet to experience the pain of an annoying 12 year old screeching abuse at me when playing online.)

(Note : It’s yet to be seen whether Playstations other big steps towards game types outside of the Xbox’s scope (MAG and DC Universe) will be additions to the list of must-haves, but the potential i’ve seen and the lack of lag i’ve experienced in other games bodes well for both of them. That and i’m a massive DC comics fan. )

Well I’ve just had an hour or so playing the online beta for Uncharted 2 – effectively a demo for the online section of the game – and I am extremely impressed.

Firstly let me just say I was struck by a problem that is often apparent in multiplayer betas, the fact that it seems to take 3 or 4 minutes of searching before you can join a game. I’m sure that this will be ironed out for the full product though.

Other than that I can’t think of a negative to report back

After a few rounds the controls felt natural and intuitive, especially the climbing and vaulting mechanic. The cover system is well implemented – a tap of circle will see you take cover against the nearest wall.

Graphically the game is superb and the layout design of the levels feels brilliant – with several levels of verticality in each there are plenty of options.

There are all sorts of game modes – one I played was like ‘Capture And Hold’ in Killzone 2, which was good fun but other than that I only seemed to be able to get a game in one of the various iterations of Deathmatch.

There was one punishing version called Elimination that was superb – literally one life. You die, you’re out until the end of the round. Harsh but challenging for the harder gamers amongst us.

There are co-op online missions as well, which I believe will support up to 4 players.

It’s been a while since I’ve been blown away by a demo of a game but Uncharted 2 certainly fits the bill. I can’t wait to get this and play alongside my mates.

Download it for free from the PSN Store now and enjoy what just could be the Playstation 3’s jewel in the crown.

In the market for a new system? Having owned both since their respective launch dates, i can safely say you should get a Playstation 3. Why Storekeeper i hear you say? Following are my reasons on why to get a PS3 instead:

1. Though the Xbox 360 does have a fairly large database of games, i honestly believe the PS3 has a better gaming catalogue based on quality. Especially with Sony’s in house software house which produces games like the new upcoming God of War, and Naughty Dog’s Unchartered 2 out 13 October 2009, and not to mention classics like Game of the Year 2008 Metal Gear Solid 4 you can’t go wrong. Halo is so like Lady Gaga, everyone just wants you to disappear now.

2. I’ve had to bury 4 Xbox 360’s because of the doomed Red Rings of Death. First Playstation 3, still kicking and screaming. I don’t care if the new 360’s don’t fail, you’ve still failed in my eyes microsoft for launching a faulty product. Come time for the new Xbox, i’ll wait 3 years first.

3. Bluray movies kick ass.

4. Killzone 2 anyone?

5. PS3 rumble remote controller is out of this world when playing fighting or first person shooter games.

6. Free Online Multiplayer for PS3. Microsoft it’s time to stop charging me 49.99$ a year to play online. Especially since in the first place I bought that game for another 59.99$.

7. Better graphics on the PS3. In gaming, that matters a lot.

With the new price cut on the PS3, which is now priced at 299.99$, its a lot better if you invest in a PS3. Just my thoughts.

Here’s a link for UNCHARTED 2 coming out October 16,2009, and PSM (playstation magazine) reviewed the game 21/20. I think its time you went out and picked up a PS3. http://n4g.com/ps3/News-394102.aspx

Signing Off,

Ok boys and gals. With the holiday season coming up and the inevitable console wars discussions that

Ok boys and gals. With the holiday season coming up and the inevitable console wars discussions that are due from both systems being evenly priced, I thought it would be a nice time to take an honest look at both platforms and see who truly has the better lineup. These areas will be judged upon the past, present, and future (in terms of future sales, we will obviously be looking at estimates) of both systems. Enjoy !

Shooters:

This easily boils down to a two on two match up of colossal franchises as you have the biggest first person and third person shooter of each of the two titans.
I don’t think anyone can be honest and say halo 3 doesn’t absolutely blow away killzone 2. Between much greater sales numbers, a much more robust online community, 4 player co-op, and multiple expansion packs it easily takes the FPS crown. Oh, and a little known title called Halo 3 ODST is set to “drop” down on us…and on the sales charts.
Now, in regards to the third person shooters, its a lot more even (or will be) come this holiday season. With Uncharted 2 bringing online multiplayer and a 3 player co-op mode to what is already a massively well loved franchise, it looks to match up well against Gears 2 love it or hate it multiplayer mode and the ever popular horde mode. TPS is a tie (unless uncharted 2 drops the MP ball).

The Better Shooters: Xbox 360

Action Games

Since Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry are both multi-platform, there are really only two titles I can think of that fit the bill of exclusive action games. For the 360, it is the rightly overlooked and underwhelming Ninja Blade against the upcoming finale in the well acclaimed God of War Series for the PS3. This isn’t even a contest, as God of War has produced incredibly epic titles two times over and is more then set to finish strong. Ninja Blade was barely par for the course and it’s exclusivity didn’t make a dent in anyone’s plans.

Better Action Games: PS3

Open World Games

All gamers can fire up a game of GTA 4 or Prototype, so what are the big guns in regards to open world games? In my opinion, you’d have to put Infamous up against Crackdown as both are very well received games and new IP’s of this generation. Crackdown blew gamers minds as you can leap over tall buildings, toss cars like coke cans, and blow up virtually anything (or anyone) in sight. As for infamous, this game not only helped sony defend itself against the “you have no games” argument and it got a lot of attention as a potential GOTY candidate. However, we now are getting ready to see Crackdown 2, which not only will have competitive MP but a four player co-op campaign. Since a new studio is developing it though, quality won’t be known for sure. I think it’s an honest draw.
(You could argue Infamous should win it for the PS3 due to its depth in story and choices, or that 360 should get the edge due to its exclusive GTA4 expansions and the upcoming Crackdown sequel)

Better Open World Games: Tie

Racing

This is without a doubt the closest competition of all the groups as you have Forze 3 on the Xbox 360 against Gran Turismo 5 on the PS3. Both are graphically delicious, both are tight racing sims, and both offer a vast array of cars and options. This is a dead even draw.

Racers: Tie

Role Playing Games

This is by far the hardest one to compare as some of sony’s biggest arguments aren’t even available(stateside at least) and the 360 has lost some key exclusives in recent news. But let’s try to compare as best we can. (Keep in mind, Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata both went multiplatform after being “exclusive”)
In terms of exclusives as of today, you have the mentally prolific (yet non-intensive) Lost Odyssey and the blockbuster smash hit Fable 2 against Folklore. So as of today, its a no contest win on the 360. However, Demon Souls and White Knight Chronicles both appear to try very distinct approaches to the genre in addition to being very well previewed. I have to give it to the 360, simply because not only do we have better role playing games as of today, we do have the much anticipated Fable 3 set to hit us sometime in 2010.

Better RPG’s: Xbox 360

Stealth

If there was ever a system selling franchise, it was Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3). this title not only concluded one of the most engrossing story arcs of modern times but also busted out a fairly enjoyable online component. On the other end of the gaming pool, we have been treated to no exclusive stealth games. Keep in mind, as of today, we are the sole players able to enjoy the upcoming conviction entry for splinter cell. And we are also getting the next major Metal Gear Title, dubbed uprising. But as of today, you have to give it to Sony.

Stealth: PS3

Fighters

Considering the fact that virtually every fighter known in existence is multi-platform, this is a hands up win to the 360 for having Dead or Alive 4 in its library. This classic title showed gamers what the term hardcore means and is still graphically impressive even by today’s standards.

Fighters: Xbox 360

So there you go. In the overall look between the two consoles, as of today the 360 is the superior system for great gaming experiences. But with so many variables in the upcoming months, we can’t say for certain that will remain fact and not fiction. Will Crackdown 2 and Uncharted 2 live up to the hype? Will Demon Soul’s and White Knight Chronicles be able to topple the lionhead legend of Fable 3? Will the 360 be able to release any action game anywhere near the caliber of God of War? Can Left4Dead2 being “console exclusive” help the 360 this holiday? Only time will tell.

Live and let game.

Back in the day when we were all regularly playing Killzone 2, I noticed that you could stick C4 mines to other people.

Armed with this knowledge, I set myself a challenge. To place a mine on the face of an enemy player.

I documented the results and created the above video, which has been viewed over 2,000 times and counting, and tweeted about by Killzone’s own development team!

For the first time in a long while I have not been sucked into the hype for a big triple A game.

I just wasn’t excited about Modern Warfare at all – a mixture of not getting on with the first title and a general disappointment from the multiplayer footage I’d seen.

Upon firing up the single player mode I was struck by how good the graphics were and after a quick run through the training camp I was on my way.

The campaign mode sees you take on the role of several characters and while the story is full of big set pieces, the lack of depth in any of the characters you control leads to a sense of confusion at times.

This is also one of the games biggest weaknesses – without any sort of attachment to any of the characters it was difficult to care about what was going on as I worked my way through set piece after set piece.

The set pieces themselves were great when they worked but on the whole were another weakness in my opinion.

Take the snow mobile ride. Now I know someone who did it in one flowing attempt and thought it was amazing. It took me 3 or 4 goes to nail it – on one occasion failing right on the last jump as I wasn’t going quick enough – and was just a disappointing pain in the ass.

I just feel sections like that should be very hard to mess up, not knocking into one tree kills you (as realistic as that is).

Overall the single player is a bit of an enjoyable mess, with a story that is all over the place.

But no-one is going to be buying Modern Warfare 2 for the campaign mode… it’s all about the multiplayer.

And it’s a pretty good experience.

It’s been patched 4 times in the opening two weeks after release which I think may be a record – and it certainly struggles at times.

I’ve been kicked off because ‘the server is full’, disconnected from lobbies, been unable to party up, got stuck in doorways, had the cpu move for me when I was trying to stay still and had general connection issues.

Having said all that the actual gameplay is polished, and while it took a while to get used to the speed of moving (having been used to the slower Killzone 2), Modern Warfare 2 is fantastic fun online.

They have incorporated some features from other games and improved their own stuff from the previous installment.

The best thing for me are the Deathstreaks, where instead of being rewarded for killing opponents you get a bonus for dying. Very helpful if you’re having a bad round or just starting out.

Modern Warfare 2 is a vast multiplayer experience, with a ton of unlocks and perks to get over time. It’s a rich and deep set of abilities and weapons, which will keep you busy for a while to come.

As an overall package though Modern Warfare 2 is a lopsided beast.

The single player lacks any depth and would be no great loss to skip and the multiplayer, while fun and engaging, is extremely glitchy and suffers from connection problems.

Better than I thought then but not quite the second coming everyone was raving about.

Rating: 8/10
