One of Sony’s flagship first person shooting franchises, Killzone is coming to the PS3 on October 23 as a trilogy box. The trilogy will be priced at $40 (Rs. 2,200 approx.). The PlayStation Blog says that like the Collection line-up so far, the original Killzone has been treated with the signature 720p HD makeover, along with full Trophy support.

The blog goes on to say that in addition to Killzone HD, the Trilogy also includes Killzone 2. Act 2 and Killzone 3 to round out the set. Not only will the Trilogy include the three games, but it will also include all the Killzone 2 and 3 multiplayer map packs free of charge. The details of the map package are as follows:

Steel & Titanium Map Pack

Flash & Thunder Map Pack

Napalm & Cordite Map Pack

Killzone 3 Map Pack Bundle

Killzone 3 Steel Rain Map Pack

Killzone 3 Retro Map Pack

Killzone 3 From The Ashes Map Pack

If you have a 3D compatible TV then you will be able to play all the games in 3D. If you are a fan of Sony’s motion controller, all the three games support the PlayStation Move.

We have seen quite a few of PS3 classic franchise get remastered and come in a box set for the PS3.

Playstation fans, Sony isn’t slowing down on delivering terrific values to you in the form of their “Collection” series. Following the release of the God of War Saga, InFamous Collection, and Ratchet and Clank Collection late last month, Sony today announced that the Killzone Trilogy is coming to stores on October 23rd and will retail for $39.99.

The collection includes PS3 titles Killzone 2 and Killzone 3, as well as all of the multiplayer map pack DLCs for both games. A lot of PS3 gamers already have those two games though, but the collection also includes Killzone HD. Killzone HD is the HD remastering of the original Killzone game that launched on the PS2. If you missed out on Killzone for PS2 (as I did), then this is great news. Killzone HD is packing full trophy support too, and thankfully there’s no online multiplayer with Killzone HD so it at least won’t be super hard to Platinum.

Of course if you already own the two PS3 Killzone titles you probably won’t want to get off $40 for Killzone HD, and the good news is that Killzone HD will be available as a standalone download on PSN. Price hasn’t been revealed, but I’d imagine it’ll be $14.99.

Check out the screens below for Killzone HD (720p HD).

If you missed the original Killzone back in 2004 and have spent the last eight years praying for a chance to play it in glorious high-definition, your wait will be over soon. Today on the Official PlayStation Blog, Sony announced their next multi-game PlayStation 3 collection: The Killzone Trilogy.

Maintaining a pattern established by releasing HD remakes of all of their other popular franchises that began on the PlayStation 2, the Killzone Trilogy will feature an updated version of the original game with 720p graphics and Trophy support, as well as Killzones 2 and 3 and all the multiplayer map packs that Sony released for the two games. Plus, if you already have the sequels (or refuse to own them for some reason), the first game will be available as a separate download on the PlayStation Network.<del>
</del>

The collection’s box art (which you can see below) proudly touts PlayStation Move and 3D TV compatibility, but it isn’t clear if that refers to all three games or only Killzone 3 (which already supported Move and 3D). We’ve reached out to Sony for clarification but have not yet received a response.

I’ve also asked Sony whether or not the Killzone Trilogy will allow Remote Play on PS Vita (like the God of War and Shadow Of The Colossus/Ico collections) and will update this story when we have an answer.

What we do know is that the Killzone Trilogy Collection will be available for the PlayStation 3 on October 23 for $39.99. For more information, check out the Official PlayStation Blog’s announcement, which also contains a trailer showcasing the franchise’s history of rousing space Nazi rallies.

Game: Killzone 3

Release Date: February 22, 2011

Publisher(s): Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE)

Developer(s): Guerrilla Games

Genre(s): First-person shooter

Platform(s): Playstation 3

Story/Plot:

Killzone 3 takes place as the third game in the Killzone series, set in the era of space colonization sometime in the future. The game takes place on the planet “Helghan” which is populated by the enemies of the ISA (Interplanetary Strategic Alliance), the Helghast. With their former leader Scolar Visari dead, the Helghast have turned to their new leader, Admiral Orlock. There is a war being waged between the ISA and the Helghast and Thomas “Sev” Sevchenko wishes to end it once and for all. Sev and his comrade Rico Velasquez must move quickly to stop the impending doom of Earth, and the brutality of the Helghast. Admiral Orlock is not the only problem though, Jorhan Stahl is a much more deadly adversary and as the head of Stahl Arms Corporation, he is a deadly foe. It is up to Sev and Rico to put a stop to all the madness, and bring peace back to Earth and humanity as a whole.

Gameplay:

As a first-person shooter, the gameplay for Killzone 3 is pretty straight forward. The player will be able to choose from a variety of different weapons, ranging from assault rifles to rocket launchers. At any given time the player will be able to carry 2 heavy or main weapons, a pistol, and frag grenades. The enemies faced are tough and relentless, making the game difficult to “run and gun” through, even on the lower difficulty settings. The player will need to be resourceful and careful when facing Helghast head on. Other than the Helghast, no other true enemies are found. The Helghast do arm themselves to the teeth, though, and they also use machinery such as small jets and robotic armor suits against their foes. There are a few times in which the player will be given the ability to use a jetpack, which breaks up the gameplay and adds an interesting touch. The most unique thing about the game is the use of the Six Axis in the Playstation 3 controller. Placing mines and turning valves requires the use of the Six Axis which breaks up the monotony of the basic gameplay. This game also supports the Playstation Move motion controls, though I did not personally use them.

Visuals/Presentation:

The visuals of the game are interesting since it takes place on an alien planet. There are certain areas that are visually stunning and are very unique which make the player really think about their surrounds. Other settings are plain and are what to be expected, but nonetheless keep with the mood of the game. For the most part, the game itself feels unique visually and separates itself from other games in its genre. The presentation itself is stunning, since the graphics of the game are so crisp and clean. Regardless of the settings, everything in the game is extremely realistic aesthetically and lives up to the Playstation 3 exclusive expectation of having amazing graphical content. The soundtrack is nothing special. It sets the mood in the right way and gives validity to the feelings the player will experience. Voice acting in the game was done well, other than Brian Cox, who is the voice of Visari, none of the other actors are extremely well known. They do a good job though, and are easy to differentiate from each other.

Final Score:

8

My Thoughts:

This game was a very fun game to play, and very challenging. I typically play most games on the middle or normal difficulty setting, and even there the game really put up a fight. I felt that even though the game was fun and had a good story, it was still a typical first-person shooter. That isn’t really a bad thing, I love first-person and third-person shooters, but I suppose I didn’t feel like it was unique enough to get any special attention. I would recommend this game and its predecessors to anyone with a PS3 who is looking for a fun shooter.

This game is so abjectly mediocre, I simply stopped playing it near the end and left it so for over a month. Now I finally pushed myself to play through.

So, how’s it compare to Killzone 2? It’s exactly the same, but this time you can shoot out of cover with less hassle. And that’s “cover” since you still get shot while in it, even if the enemy is on the same vertical plane.

The story? Well, in the end you commit genocide on the Helghast. That’s the most interesting part, the rest is just this grey paste that dribbles out of the screen in its blandness. Also, Malcolm McDowell is a crazy sonovabitch in this.

Killzone 2 is EXACTLY what you think it is. A military themed futuristic shooter with amazing graphics, a flashy campaign mode and a few classy dick jokes. I know, it’s 2012. At Pietriots we game according to our budgets and we take our time, because games are fun. Despite being an old predictable shooter, I felt the need to write about it because I was having a good time. The gameplay is quite impressive and the battlefields really feel alive, it was all going gre-

“COLLECT INTEL DOCUMENTS TO UNLOCK CONTENT AT KILLZONE.COM”

… what the fuck? We’re in a warzone and you want me to fire up my personal computer and think about the internet? I THOUGHT I WAS FIGHTING ENEMY DUDES, I THOUGHT THIS WAS IMPORTANT. I don’t care how cool the official Killzone website is, put it in the manual. I’ve got a game to play! As I was saying, the battlefield is very active and it somehow feels like there’s a million bullets flying out of 8-10 soldiers. The haphazard clutter of explosive sound and visual laser discos in the air combine to make a truly-

“FIND & DESTROY ALL THE HELGHAST SYMBOLS TO UNLOCK A TROPHY”

WHOA THERE get out of my way! I can’t see where this grenade is going! SHIT, that was close! … A TROPHY YOU SAY? OKAY THEN, i’ll take my eyes off this mission and leave my comrads to die while I hunt down some symbols. So I wander off the scripted path, and immediately all my buddies start bitching incessantly; “let’s go!“, “come ooooon buddy, we ain’t got all day here!“. Fuck off guys i’m busy, have you seen how cool the Killzone website is? Hold on, i’m checking my Twitter feed.

I would feel bad about making my team wait if they weren’t so hopeless, often my buddies would run out onto the battlefield and just spin around in circles until they die. They rarely shoot, and when they do they don’t hit anything. Their stupidity extends beyond this lack of spacial awareness, to the point where they actively sabotage you. Listening to your team is a great way to die, someone will say “run up the stairs!” where ten enemy soldiers await you in the perfect position.

In fairness, this stuff is only stupidly distracting because of how detailed and impressive the world is in this game; surprisingly the bullshit trailer Sony first showed at E3 wasn’t bullshit. The developers created an intensely buzzing world, and I excitedly explored every inch I could. The special effects really stand out as well with some insane explosions and particles flying everywhere, and enemies have impressive reactions to things; including their own deaths. Unfortunately the great graphics are masked by a black-grey filter that robs the colour from the entire game. It’s seriously bland; it makes Fallout 3 look like fucking Robot Unicorn in comparison. As a result it takes away a lot of the impact of the detailed graphics until you look closer. I suppose it’s feasible that our hero is colorblind, it affects 1 in 10.

On the whole, that’s pretty much the extent of annoying things covered. It was quite a smooth experience all through the rest of the campaign with no other annoying bits, quite an accomplishment for a shooter of this style (TROPHY UNLOCKED). The gameplay is a lot of fun despite a few shortcomings with the controls. By shortcomings I mean this;

Dual-analog shooters feel like complete shit to me after playing so much Conduit 2. It’s still functional and you can aim where you want, but it’s less responsive and less fun. Furthermore, Killzone 2 feels more stiff than other dual-analog shooters i’ve played and the cursor bounces around a bit on its own guidance. It looks like Killzone 3 may have solved this problem with Move implementation, but i’ll reserve judgement on that until I play it.

Moving on, the game is still fun because it seems like it wasn’t designed for precision aiming. Many scenarios involve coming in at enemies from the right angle and knocking them out in close combat, or taking down giant enemy drones and tanks. I very rarely went for headshots, it felt pointless when 5 bullets could still bounce off their helmets. The most satisfying gun is the shotgun, much to my glee. One or two hits with the shotgun will do as much damage as 30 with an assault rifle; it’s damn satisfying to mow enemies down with steady, powerful shots and clever movement. Strategy is important and you can’t just bunny hop your way through a battlefield; I learned this while trying to revive one of my hopeless teammates who decided to run into the enemies camp on a whim in the middle of a shitstorm between both armies.

Another thing that feels great is the running, holding down sprint almost triples your speed and it actually feels fast. It’s refreshing to play a modern shooter where the character doesn’t jab a steel rod halfway up his arse before a run.

The campaign is pretty short, it took me 7 hours and I wasn’t playing on easy. The story is interesting if you like jokes about smelly assholes followed by loud “YEEEHAWWW” laughter and high-fives. Which I do. Apart from that it’s very basic, one army fighting another for reasons none of the soldiers understand. That’s about what I expect for a shooter, the rest of the action lies in online multiplayer. I had a few goes and I thought I was winning until I realised the red number was the number of deaths. Killzone 2 is a fairly typical, blunt, average game; but it doesn’t apologise for it. It’s generic fun and I enjoyed it enough that i’m going to hunt down Killzone 3 for some more action.

Killzone 3 (PS3)
Developer: Guerilla Games
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

Both of the previous Killzone installments were positioned by both Sony and Guerilla Games as the ‘Halo Killer’ for the Playstation brand. Such comparisons created bloated expectations that never helped the Killzone brand prosper. All told, Killzone 3 is another shooter amid a dozen others with its own set of advantages and flaws. When competition is as fierce as it is in this genre, making the best game you feasibly can is the only way to succeed. Comparisons rarely serve the underdog well.

Comparisons certainly do not help when the narrative in Killzone 3 is as terrible as it is. Rather than having the conflict be between the ISA (good guys) and the Helghast (bad guys), the two sides bicker amongst themselves. Worse yet, none of them present interesting points of view – everyone just yells at each other, ignorantly protesting that they are right instead of explaining why. And Sev, the protagonist, is a pacifist who, up until the end of the penultimate act, complains about the orders given to him yet chooses not to voice them. Poorly edited cutscenes, involving break-neck cuts, result in jarring events. Atrocious lip-syncing technology further disrupts these scenes. The start of Killzone 3 is also oddly incorporated – the chapter starts off six months after the events of the previous game and is used as a tutorial. After the chapter ends, you are taken back to where the previous game ended, and when you revisit the tutorial portion, events unfold differently.

All of these narrative flaws prove so irritating because the setting of Killzone 3 is gorgeous and meticulously detailed. The diversity of environments is staggering: snow-caped mountains, a junkyard, a Helghast space station, and a perilous tropical jungle are the highlights as they punctuate the more generic, dystopian battlefields. Colorful light sources, such as blindingly light pinks, rich reds, intense oranges, and many more, are subtly incorporated to creatively avoid the all-too-common brown-drenched settings of similar games.

The pacing in Killzone 3 is downright relentless yet inconsistently crafts unique experiences around its core gunplay mechanics. Killzone 3 is still one of the few first person shooters to incorporate a cover system. Battles feel more organic and realistic because of it – you will be immediately punished for attempting Rambo-style tactics. Set-pieces are crowded with Helghast scum for you to blast to itty-bitty pieces and the brutal pacing guarantees little downtime. Battles move with steady momentum as objectives are constantly changing – requisite sniper and rocket-launcher segments are included – but little else is integrated that properly excite. Environments are rarely designed to create subtle, unique scenarios. On-rail turret sections are in abundance yet their inclusion act more as visual showcases of the game’s sophisticated technology rather than engaging diversions.

These customary additions vastly outnumber the few instances of inspired variety. An early stealth-focused level set in a dangerous yet vibrant jungle has you sneaking around baddies. If you are spotted, survival becomes unlikely as a new Helghast variant rapidly approaches you, dagger in-hand. This level is perhaps the most intense in the entire game, and a definite highlight. With one new enemy type introduced, gameplay is altered to craft a unique experience that still shares the same focus of the core gameplay – heart-pounding minute-to-minute action. Jetpacks are the other highlight. Platforming is incorporated, as are more vertically oriented battlefields. The jetpacks empower you in such a way that you wish you could always use one – approaching an enemy from above and blasting him with a stream of infinite bullets is an absolute pleasure. The above portions of the game were adored because they were hugely successful at varying the basic shooting mechanics in new ways. More concepts should have been included to keep the solid gunplay from becoming as numbing as it does towards the end.

Many of the game’s single-player issues vanish when battling online. Team deathmatch is present, as is an oddly designed variant that has you either defending or capturing set points for the entire duration of the match, but the most exciting one is called Warzone. The objects are constantly changing in Warzone (get more kills than the other team, assassinate or protect a certain player, capture or defend certain spots, etc.), which helps it maintain the intensity of the single-player campaign’s action and ratchets it up to absurd levels of craziness. Killzone 3 delivers the most chaotic yet accessible online experience I have ever experienced.

It will not take long to craft a build that suits your playstyle online, thanks to an intuitive, streamlined experience point system. You are awarded points by performing certain actions in battles, just like the plethora of other online shooters, but progression is not locked. You earn skill points that can be used to purchase abilities, guns, and perks for whichever character class you prefer. Within just a few matches, you will have a competitive build. Even with my brief experiences online, repetition already reared its ugly head – everything had immediately become too comfortable.

Beyond Killzone 3’s often-epic set-pieces and varied locations, the game is absent of personality. The repetitious act of regularly switching from relentless gunplay, to awkward cutscenes with downright atrocious characters no one could like, to all-too-frequent railed segments, desensitizes you to its few commendable aspects. When it comes down to it, Killzone 3 is a competent, if a mechanically indistinctive, shooter that excels online. But without all the clout and bolstered expectations the previous titles endured, gamers can more easily ignore its flaws and play the best installment in the Killzone franchise.

Fergal Gara, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK, has been talking about sales of the Playstation Move periphal, saying, “I’d say we have a solid foothold. Could it, should it, have done more? I think so.”

In an interview with industry magazine MCV, Gara pointed out the importance of having strong software to support sales of the Playstation 3 motion sensing device. “We’ve had a widely different performance from the various Move titles. Sports Champions is by far the most successful, selling a couple of hundred thousand units, which is a healthy performance. But it does vary thereafter.“

Gara was referring to UK sales, but, with the exception of Sports Champions, sales of Playstation Move games have been generally indifferent worldwide. At the time of writing, worldwide sales for the ‘Playstation Move Heroes’ game stand at 102,111 units. Move based game ‘Start the Party’ has worldwide sales of 370,731 and ‘Eyepet and Friends’ has only sold 52,916 units worldwide. Sports Champions is way in front of its rival Move games, with worldwide sales of over 3M, but it must be remembered that this game comes bundled with the Move starter pack in the U.S.

Pondering the future for Playstation Move, Gara said, “We are in the market, we have got a shout. Forthcoming titles are going to be important. We take some encouragement from things we can mention, such as Sorcery which is on the schedule, and other things that we know are bubbling under. It is a focus from a studio point-of-view to bring out stronger titles.”

Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Jim Ryan added, “There are few things that we have got a lot more clear-minded about in terms of targeting the family, social markets, and not being all things to all men with Move.” Ryan remains positive about the future of Move, saying, “Our developers are making a step-change in their ability to do exciting things with Move software. And the fruits of that will be seen in 2012 and beyond.”

Sony has implemented Playstation Move controls in many of its games since the device launched, including core titles such as Killzone 3, SOCOM and MAG. One of 2012’s most anticipated games, Bioshock Infinite, will also be supporting the Playstation Move peripheral.

Is The Original Killzone Coming To PlayStation 3? The Killzone franchise didn’t really make its mark

Is The Original Killzone Coming To PlayStation 3?

The Killzone franchise didn’t really make its mark until the PS3 came along. While the original PlayStation 2 title was dubbed as Sony’s “Halo killer” at the time, the final product ultimately fell short. Sure, the PlayStation Portable spin-off, Killzone: Liberation, remains one of the best entries in the series — but it wasn’t until Killzone 2 that the franchise ultimately captured the enthusiasm of the wider gaming community.

With the Killzone brand now commanding a much larger fanbase, a re-release of the original Killzone doesn’t seem too far fetched. And an ESRB listing has hinted at exactly that, with Guerrilla’s gritty debut listed as a “PlayStation 3″ release on the ratings board’s website.

Chuck in some trophies and we’d be up for the re-release.

Let’s see what’s to come, only time will tell.

I’ve been playing Killzone 3 in coop mode and I’m loving it. I’m playing couch coop with my father in law. The only issue with some coop games is the screen only takes up some of the real estate. I game on a 40″ tv so it’s not really a huge issue but I don’t care for that in my couch coop experience. This game is fantastic. I don’t think I would call it a Gears of War killer, but very fun none the less. I really like the colors and draw distances. The enemy AI is pretty stellar. They get right up in your face and even flank you when needed. The different types of troops are pretty cool too. There are these super soldiers that bum rush you and stab you in the face with their super blades on their forearms. You can counter with a melee attack if you time it right. If so, there are different types of animations and you either snap knecks or stab them. It’s a pretty great feeling when accomplished. Were almost finished with the game. It’s not very long but well worth a rental or pick it up for a $20. I give it 4.5 Ricks.

Another Year, Another Milestone Sony fans had to deal with a lot this year. While that phrase does h

Another Year, Another Milestone

Sony fans had to deal with a lot this year. While that phrase does have a negative connotation to it, there are some great things that happened this year as well. But through all the ordeals and triumphs, the end of the year has finally arrived and we now look back on this year for the PlayStation 3 and Vita.

Only on PlayStation

Sony is bringing back the classics.

As always, Sony takes pride in giving players a multitude of PS3-exclusive games to choose from, and 2011 was no different. Killzone 3, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3, inFamous 2, SOCOM 4 and Little Big Planet 2 were the console’s heavy hitters. The first three games have made a name for themselves over the years and it looks like they are coming to a close. Two of the three made their start on the PS3 and it is amazing to see the many achievements each series has earned with every title. As for the rest, it is safe to say that we will see a few more iterations in the future, and we can expect them to raise the standard in their respective franchises.

One thing does stick out as a disappointment: There was a dry spell in the fall in which no exclusives were released for the PS3, and it didn’t pick up until November when Uncharted 3 came out. Maybe next year we can see a more spread-out release schedule for PS3 exclusives.

While we are on the subject of games, what of the HD remakes and collections that lined the store shelves? Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, The Sly Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Prince of Persia Trilogy and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Trilogy all made appearances this year. Each one brought nostalgia to players as they played through their favorite moments again, and this time in glorious 2011 visual clarity. These collections were a big hit and you can expect more of them next year.

A New Challenger

Aside from the exclusives and collections, the think tanks at Sony were also hard at work on creating its next generation of handheld consoles. During the days that led up to E3, we were all spellbound by the countless rumors about Sony’s new handheld, codenamed “NGP”. It has only been a couple of weeks and the PlayStation Vita has already made waves in Japan, especially with selling 300,000 units at launch. Its many features captivated us and its pricing meant that it would give the Nintendo 3DS a run for its money. Developers were lining up left and right to put their game on the new handheld, as evidenced by the amount of games announced for the system at E3.

Only a few more months and the Vita will be available to the whole world.

Despite all of the hype for the Vita, details such the pricing of memory cards, a cap download on 3G data and number of accounts per system were a big disappointment. The news may have had people cancelling their pre-orders before launch, but only time will tell whether it may cripple sales when the Vita releases worldwide in February.

Jumping the Gun

There were two things that Sony had in 2011 that had the potential to be developed upon but remained quietly understated. First off, the PlayStation Move. It’s been on the market for about a year and a half and while there might be games out there that do incorporate the peripheral in really cool ways, it has not really captured the attention of most fans. I think that the big issue is that there isn’t a game that has been a smash hit with the Move as its main controller, and only a handful of games incorporate the motion controller whatsoever. If there’s anything that is to be learned about motion control gaming with Move, it’s that it needs to be in games that use the peripheral in innovative ways. Otherwise, it’s not worth it at all.

Seriously, how many of you bought this?

Secondly, there’s 3D gaming, and this, in my mind, might be difficult to work on because the requirements for 3D gaming – like a 3DTV – are still very expensive. Nevertheless, a lot of games for the PS3 are 3D-enabled. I have spent some time checking it out, and there really is no difference to me than playing it on a regular HDTV. The bullets and debris might have the illusion of flying right in your face, but it really is nothing to write home about. I think it would be best if Sony took a short hiatus from the 3D scene and came back to it when the 3DTVs become more affordable and advanced.

The Big Screw-Up

We come to it at last, Sony’s one big trainwreck of a screw-up. If you owned a PS3 earlier this year, you know exactly what happened. For almost a month, the PlayStation Network was shut down due to attacks by rogue hackers, which exposed a lot of private user information, specifically credit card information. By the time users were warned of the situation, the information was already compromised and it quickly turned into a huge mess that left many gamers furious.

Never again...hopefully.

That dark period has come and gone, but for Sony it will continue to be a thorn in their side; gamers will no doubt struggle to place their trust back in the company. The incident caught Sony off guard and extremely unprepared for the consequences, so let’s hope their eyes are a little more open to potential threats in the new year.

To the Future!

There you have it: the year in review for Sony. Needless to say it was a very eventful year that featured a lot of highs, a few iffy moments and a major disaster. We have seen the release of new exclusives and a reincarnation of older games; a new handheld has just entered the Japanese market and will enter the global market in coming months; and new safeguards have been added to the PSN to prevent further attacks.

Mistakes have been made and lessons have been learned. New technology has been introduced that can advance games and the accompanying technology to another level. With any luck, Sony can learn from the past and take advantage of the many opportunities available to make 2012 an even better year.
