Istanbul is surrounded by beautiful water: the rolling Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara. I think it’s the city’s most lovely feature. The water reflects the mood of the city. On gray days, the sea is like churning concrete. On sunny days, it sparkles turquoise.

However, all of this water is not swimmable.

There is a solution to this conundrum if you know where to look. I didn’t… but my friends did.

The secret is Kilyos, a village in Istanbul on the Black Sea with a glorious hidden beach.

One delightfully warm April day, I joined a group of Erasmus students and Turks on an adventure to the secret beach at Kilyos.

Much like our trip to Rumeli Feneri, it was a long bus ride to Kilyos. Once we got there, everyone stocked up on snacks and booze, and we started to hike to the beach.

We walked through winding back roads and clambered over cliffs. After a steep descent, we were greeted with an amazing sight. This diamond in the rough. This glorious beach.

Kilyos.

Apparently this beach is on land that used to belong to a military base. The base is long-gone but most people don’t know that; the majority of the people who come to this beach are Kilyos locals.

Even though the day we went was spectacularly summery, it was still April—the water was FREEZING. We tried to swim anyway… but it was so cold that it was actually physically painful!

Otherwise, we spent the day lounging in the sunshine, kicking around a soccer ball, and making new friends. It was our own private paradise, an escape from Istanbul’s relentless crowds. We left the polluted Bosphorus for a delicious slice of the Black Sea.

The first sweaty heat waves of summer are just arriving in Istanbul, so you’ll know where to find me—hiking down to our secret beach in Kilyos.

I spent a day with friends, eating a kilo of strawberries from our local market and looking out over the Bosphorus.

I had a day off from school for May Day, or Labor Day. This happened, but I was far away from the protests.

A friend and I took a day trip to the beach at Kilyos, located on the northern end of Istanbul on the Black Sea.

I visited Hannah and Ryan for a barbecue. This morning, we walked along the Bosphorus in Sariyer and saw a sailboat race.

Currently: hearing the celebrations for Galatasaray’s Champions Cup win – virtually every car driving by is honking its horn, there are fireworks going off in multiple places in the city, and I’m hearing a lot of chants… “bir, iki, üç, dört!” (one, two three, four – the number of goals Galatasaray scored in this particular game).

The Princes’ Islands, an archipelago of nine islands in the Sea of Marmara, were places of exile for Byzantine princes.Today, during the summer months, Istanbul’s wealthy escape to their cool sea breezes,clear water and elegant 19th century houses. Buyukada is the largest of the islands. Here you can enjoy a ride in a horse-drawn phaeton (carriage) among the pine trees, after having relaxed on a beach in one of the numerous coves that ring the island.The other popular islands are Kinali, Sedef, Burgaz and Heybeli. Regular ferry boats connect the islands with both the European and Asian shores.A faster sea bus service operates from Kabatas in the summer.

On the European side of the Black Sea coast, 25 km from the outskirts of Istanbul, Kilyos’s long, broad sandy beaches draw crowds of Istanbul residents in the summer months.

The Belgrade Forest,inland from the Black Sea on the European side, is the largest forest around Istanbul. On weekends Istanbulites drive out to its shade for family picnics and barbeques Seven ancient reservoirs and a number of natural springs refresh the air. The Ottoman aqueducts, of which the Moglova Aqueduct built by Sinan is the most splendid, lend a majesty to the natural surroundings.

On the Asian side, Polonezkoy, 25 km from Istanbul, was founded in the 19th century by Polish immigrants. Istanbul residents get away to its pastoral landscape for walks, horseback riding and to enjoy the traditional Polish food served by the descendants of the original settlers.

On the Black Sea, 70 km from Uskudar, Sile’s sandy beaches, fish restaurants and hotels make it one of the most delightful holiday places near Istanbul. Sile bezi, cool cotton clothing, popular with tourists, is fashioned here.

The charming fishing town of Eskihisar, southeast of Istanbul,boasts a marina where yachtsmen can moor their boats after a day out in the Sea of Marmara. In town, the house of Osman Hamdi Bey, Turkey’s great 19th century painter, has been converted into a museum. Neighboring sites include the tomb of Hannibal between Eskihisar and Gebze, and a Byzantine castle.

On the southern shore of tne Sea of Marmara, the popular resort of Yalova has been visited since Roman times for its thermal waters which aid in the cure of rheumatism. The baths of the main resort a few Kilometers out of town are set in pleasant gardens adding to the relaxing atmosphere. In the town of Yalova itself, many inexpensive hotels and guest houses provide comfortable accommodation. Seventeen Kilometers west of Yalova, the relaxing resort area of Cinarcik has lovely beaches and modern holiday complexes.

Many Istanbulites have summer homes near Silivri, the popular vacation area about 65 km from Istanbul. A large holiday resort, it offers everything from casinos to sporting, health and fitness facilities to excellent dining. The conference center attracts business people who escape the city’s hectic pace for a working holiday. A regular sea bus service connects Istanbul to Silivri.

Öyle demeyin ya. Biz de bugün boş oturmadık, çamurlar içinde, neş’eli mi neşeli bir aktiviteye katıldık. Macera Akademisi’nin düzenlediği Mud Race‘den bahsediyorum tabii ki.

Mud Race, adı üstünde bir “çamur” koşusu. İki kategori, 5K ve 10K, aynı parkur üzerinde koşuluyor. Parkurda çamur havuzu, tırmanma duvarı, dik bir tepecik gibi 6-7 değişik engel var ve her yarışmacı bu engelleri geçmek zorunda, yoksa diskalifiye oluyor. Çamur havuzu filan da öyle hafife alınacak birşey değil, bildiğiniz balçık gibi bir maddeyle dolu. Bütün bunlar Kilyos’ta bir ormanın içine kurulmuş, dolayısıyla koşu yolu biraz engebeli de olsa gerçekten çok güzel bir antrenman oldu.

Yarış sonunda artık temizlenmek için mi yoksa havanın güzelliğinden mi bilmem ama herkes kendini denize atıverdi oracıkta. Epey eğlenceli bir aktiviteydi anlayacağınız.

Ama olayın organizasyon tarafında hafif bir sıkıntı yok değildi. Su geçirmez chip’leri son dakikada dağıtacağız diye yarış 10.30 yerine 11.30′ta başlayınca öğlen sıcağında patates olanlar oldu. Üstelik benim chip yarış başında çalışmadığından  yarışa biraz geç başlamak zorunda kaldım.

Neyse ben kadınlarda 26. olmuşum. Bir an şüphelendim ilk duyduğumda acaba yalnızca 27 kişi mi katıldı diye ama daha fazla insan varmış neyse ki..

What does one think about when you hear the word beach? Sandy beaches, gentle waves lapping the shore, kids running around building sandcastles.

Istanbul is nearly surrounded by water. The Bosphorus runs through the middle separating the European and Asian sides; to the north you can dip your toes into the Black sea and covering the south Istanbul is the Sea of Marmara. So there are plenty of places to visit to cool off during a melting summer day.

The first beach in Turkey I was introduced to was Caddebostan; it is situated on the Asian side about 10 minutes’ drive from Kadikoy. It’s quite a unique experience and not like the beaches I described above. I have asked many of Turkish students what they think about Caddebostan and responses include ‘it’s for the uneducated’ and ‘it’s a very dirty beach’.

To get there from Kadikoy you can catch a Dolmus, a 7-seater yellow van. You are dropped off in front of a car park with a Migros and Burger King on either side. Walking to the back of the car park down some steel stairs you are greeted with green grass, a children’s play area, basketball courts and neatly assigned paths that lead you to the water side and beyond. The first visit was built with anticipation, finally going to a beach in Turkey. This is what you are greeted with…

To be honest it’s not a pretty beach at all, it provides a function of being able to jump into the sea and cool down. There are some small sandy areas but really most of the beach is surrounded by concrete. You enter the water through the little entrance ways, carefully sliding in minding the distance from the edge and the surface below. There is no sand that you gently walk through; the sea bed is made up of jagged rocks covered in moss and muscles, a slippery and sharp surface to be mindful of as you wade out to sea. Once in the water it’s blissful, the temperature is amazing, there are no waves crashing overhead, it can be very relaxing in the water. When you get out of the water there is very little relaxing to be done. You are often heckled by the local gypsies, leered at and often followed by the men hungry for Western blood.

The judgement is yours, you can visit this beach and experience tranquillity in the water and get the very best of the Turkish community out of the water or you can find another more suited watering hole to take a break from the exhausting heat.

Catching the metro and a bus from the city centre and heading north will get you to Kilyos; the journey takes about an hour and provides a great alternative to Caddebostan. The image described earlier is what you are presented with as you enter this beach. There are sun-beds with umbrellas at the ready, children running around, and digging holes in the sand, soft white wash lapping the shore line.

The disappointing aspects of this beach are the area you can swim is very limited and you have to pay for the privilege to swim in this limited area. You are caged in by ropes that stretch out less than 300 metres from the shoreline. The water itself only comes up to your shoulders in places. So what does any person do when you a vast sea stretching out before your eyes and a flimsy rope stopping you from swimming out..? Of course, we climbed easily over the rope to swim and relax on the other side of the rope. This was rudely interrupted by the screeching and consist whistle blowing by the ‘life-guards’. They eventually swam out to tell us that under no circumstances are you able to swim on the other side of the ropes. Apparently there is a dangerous undercurrent. So back on the right side of the rope in huff of disappointment, the afternoon is whittled away in the water and relaxing on the sun-beds.

So far I have been greeted with many obstacles when visiting the beaches in Istanbul but the purpose of finding relief from the increasing temperature and no air conditioner has been fulfilled. With Istanbul surrounded by water I will continue the quest to find the perfect beach where you can swim where you want, where the water is clean and cool, where you are not bothered by the locals and there is a nice place to relax and improve your tan.

AKP, ‘İstanbul projesi’ için düğmeye bastı

Projenin mimarlarından AKP’li Mehmet Demircan, İstanbul’un 2010 yılında Paris gibi olacağını söyledi.

Hükümet, üç bin yıllık tarihiyle dünyanın sayılı metropollerinden biri olan İstanbul’u, 2010 yılında modern bir kent haline getirmeyi amaçlayan ‘Üç İstanbul Projesi’ için düğmeye bastı.

Hedef 15 milyon turist

İstanbul’u bir dünya başkenti yapmayı ve yıllık ortalama 1.8 milyon olan turist sayısını altı yılda 15 milyona çıkarmayı hedefleyen proje kapsamında şehirde üç ayrı çekim merkezi oluşturulacak. Eminönü ve Fatih ilçelerinden oluşan tarihi yarımada bir müze kente, Beyoğlu kültür ve moda merkezine, Kilyos da kongre ve tatil kentine dönüştürülecek.

Projelerin finansmanı için Başbakanlık tarafından 100 trilyon liralık kaynak ayrılırken, Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü’nden yapılacak aktarımla rakamın 2004 yılı için 500 milyon dolara ulaşması ve yerli-yabancı kredi kuruluşları ve yatırımcılarla işbirliği yapılması planlanıyor.
İstanbul’da şu anda 22 turizm merkezi ve bunların 15 bin 93 yatak kapasitesi bulunuyor. ‘Üç İstanbul’ projesiyle turizm alanı ilan edilecek Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu ve Kilyos ile birlikte, bugün yılda 1.8 milyon olan turist sayısının 15 milyona çıkarılması ve yılda 10 milyar dolar gelir elde edilmesi hedefleniyor.

‘Dört mevsim turizm’

AKP Turizm Komisyonu üyesi Mehmet Demircan, Üç İstanbul Projesi tamamlandığında Türkiye’nin yeni bir vizyona sahip olacağını söyledi. Demircan, proje hakkında şöyle konuştu:

İstanbul’u tarih, kültür ve finans merkezi yapmak doğrultusunda kararlı adımlar attığımızda kent 2010 yılına kadar bir Paris gibi olabilir.

Doğa, güneş, kumun istendiği kitle turizminde Antalya var. Kültürel değerlerin ön plana çıktığı, insanların çevreyi gezip para harcadıkları turizm tipi için de İstanbul’u destinasyon merkezi yapacağız. İstanbul sadece yazları 2 milyon değil, 12 ay boyunca milyonlarca turist ağırlayacak.

İstanbul’a 2 milyon turist geliyor. Çünkü bu kongre, turizm ve tarih turizmine ve 12 ay sürecek turizme yönelik planlama yok. İstanbul’u baştan aşağı organize ederek markalaştıracak yatırımlar gündemde.
Kentin şehir mobilyalarının elden geçirilmesinden, restorasyonla tarihi dokunun ortaya çıkarılmasına kadar pek çok proje gündemde. İstanbul Türkiye’nin lokomotifi.

İstanbul’un böyle bir turizm merkezi olmasıyla, işsizlik sorununun çözümü, bütçe açıklarının kapatılmasına yarayacağı gibi, buradan memnun ayrılan turistlerin yurtdışında sizin lobiciliğinizi yapması, ihraç ettiğiniz ürünlerin orada daha çok kullanılması sağlanmış olacak.”

Nefes alınacak mekân

Başbakan Tayyip Erdoğan’ın İstanbul’u 2010 yılına hazırlayacak üç vizyon projesinden biri olarak dile getirdiği Kilyos projesi, eski maden ocaklarının İstanbul’a kazandırdığı topraklar üzerinde hayata geçecek. Projenin mimarlarından İstanbul Orman Bölge Müdürü Faruk Çebi, bölgenin halk için de nefes alınacak mekânlardan biri olacağını söyledi.

Ormanlık alanda bulunan bölgenin doğal yapısının korunmasına dikkat edeceklerini belirten Çebi, “Bölgenin bir tarafı deniz, bir tarafı orman ve doğal gölet. İstanbul’un gelecekte nefes alacağı bir mesire yeri olarak bölgenin projesini yapıyoruz. Plajı, marinası, spor merkeziyle muhteşem bir proje. Burası kurulacak ulaşım ağıyla İstanbul kent merkezinden 20 dakikada ulaşılabilecek bir mesafe” diye konuştu.

Müze kent Sultanahmet

Tarihi yarımada projesiyle, bugün Eminönü ve Fatih ilçelerinin yer aldığı 3 bin yıllık tarihiyle üç imparatorluğa ev sahipliği yapmış bölgenin müze kente dönüştürülmesi planlanıyor. Proje kapsamında Ayasofya Müzesi ve Sultanahmet Camii’nin bulunduğu alanda yeni çevre düzenlemeleri yapılacak.

Tatil merkezi Kilyos

Projenin son ayağını Kilyos projesi oluşturacak. 2006′da başlanması planlanan projede, eski maden yataklarının bulunduğu ve bugün terk edilmiş görüntüsü veren Kilyos bölgesinde kongre ve eğlence merkezleri, golf sahaları ve golfçü villaları, otel, tatil köyleri ve ahşap evler, yat limanı, deniz sporları merkezi, doğa parkı, kanallar ve plajlar oluşturulması ve böylece bölgenin doğa ve eğlencenin bir arada bulunduğu tatil cennetine dönüştürülmesi hedefleniyor.
