Sugar Minott “Dancehall Showcase 2″ KM6217

-

Skip James ” I’d Rather Be The Devil – The Legendary 1931 Session”

Recently, an MF DOOM interview surfaced on hiphopdx, and I figured I should write something about it

Recently, an MF DOOM interview surfaced on hiphopdx, and I figured I should write something about it because noone’s heard SHIT from DOOM as far as interviews go in a long while. Instead of being a lazy bastard and just posting the link or some gay shit like that, I’m gonna translate DOOMian speech to those who might not as of yet have a full comprehension of the villain. This won’t be the whole interview, just some parts that translate well into common english…

HipHopDX: So just to get it out of the way, can you address the recent scandal where you were allegedly sending an impostor to perform in your mask at DOOM concerts?
DOOM: [Laughs] Alright. Here’s how I look at it, because the wording in there is kinda funny. “Impostor.” Impostor would imply that the character. I liken it to this: I’m a director as well as a writer. I choose different characters, I choose their direction and where I want to put them. So who I choose to put as the character is up to me. The character that I hired, he got paid for it. There’s no impostor.

DX: But the fans are presumably going to see you, as that character.

People need to think outside of the box, Hip Hop is not just what you expect it to be. This is a growing genre, it’s a creative field. So when you come to a DOOM show, I’m letting all the cats know now, come to hear the show and come to hear the music. To see me? Y’all don’t even know who I am! There are certain times I did shows and shit, I took a year off, and I went back to doing the character. I couldn’t find nobody to do the character so last minute I said, “Fuck it, I’ll do it.” [I] came back, did the show, lost a little weight. You know, I’m trimming down, watching my diet. I come back, do the show, sound was excellent. But as soon as I get off the stage, they’re saying it wasn’t me. Alright, it’s never me. I’m the writer. It’s a show. That’s where it’s getting twisted in Hip Hop. It’s all visual. People want to go see the guy with the big chain who’s bragging about all these cars that he has. That’s where it gets twisted. This is music. Technology makes it possible for me to still do music and not have to be any particular place. I’m using all that. I’m using every aspect at my disposal to project my creative thoughts. Either people gonna get it or they not. But I’ll tell you one thing, if you’re coming to a DOOM show, don’t expect to see me, expect to hear me or hear the music that I present. And it’s gonna be a unique experience every time. So that’s all I have to say about that.

TRANSLATION:

I’m as guilty as OJ.

OJ

DX: What’s the status of the album with Ghost?
DOOM: Now that this one is out the way, progress will be picking up. It’s about 40% done. Forty-two percent done, if I had to say. But then it’s hard to gauge because everything is speeding up now, so it could probably be done real fast, within two months I could have it done. Madvillain seems like it’s closer to being done. I’m working on the shit now. That shit’ll be done within the next two months. I don’t know when they gonna put it out. Otis [Madlib] is the producer, so I don’t really have to do too much. I think on this record, we’re mixing it up. I’ll have more production on this one. We’re thinking of doing half and half on production and half and half on content. I’m also working on a record for Williams Street, that’s Adult Swim’s record company. I think I’m gonna do [the alias King] Ghidra on there. I’m not gonna set that in stone, but I think Ghidra might be coming out on Williams Street. So by the end of the year, all of them will be done.

TRANSLATION:

Fuck Tyler Perry, he’s not funny at all.

(Now I know that one might be hard to grasp, but I know that Tyler Perry’s not funny, I hope YOU know Tyler Perry’s not funny, and DOOM strikes me as having good taste, so I’m gonna assume HE knows Tyler Perry isn’t funny, so this is the translation I got out of it.)

DX: Is it hard for you to channel that essence with your brother being gone?
DOOM: Anytime you lose a family member there’s a grieving period. But it’s not really no different, it’s just a different realm, just a different form of communication. We’re all gonna go to that realm eventually. As long as you know that you can still know how to communicate with them. They’re not gone, you just can’t see them with the naked eye. The naked eye only picks up a certain spectrum of light. What else don’t we see and what side are we on? Maybe that’s the right side and we’re gone. Connections never break. Energy can never be created or destroyed. Anything that it changes to is just change. If you know how to tune into it, it’s the same thing. So to me, any of my brothers that are on the other side, I can just still tune into them. If I’m thinking about them I’m talking to them. I can hear them, I still laugh around them. It might look weird like I’m laughing in the room by myself, but I’m laughing with Bukowski, I’m asking his permission, I’m talking to [J] Dilla, I’m talking to Sub. To me, that’s how it is. I think we’re all headed in that way of overstanding, but to get over the emotional hump is what’s important. When people feel like they lost somebody that they love, to know that they’re not gone. There’s no such thing as out of existence. They’re just in another realm. They can hear us and all that from that realm, we just can’t see them and hear them with these tools that we have. Or we do have the tools to see them and hear them, we just have to go inside and utilize those tools. Not to get too mushy with the shit.

TRANSLATION:

I’ve smoked a LOT of weed in my day…

And there you have it, DOOMian speech translated into common english. If you ever need help with something like this in the future, come crawling back to me.

Born of tragedy and betrayal, a villain reigns throughout the underground. An evil genius and hip ho

Born of tragedy and betrayal, a villain reigns throughout the underground. An evil genius and hip hop iconoclast, infamous and tormented, he is shrouded in mystery, hidden behind a mask of metal. Few know his real identity. He’s been called Vicktor Vaugh, Metal Fingers, Danger Doom, Madvillain and King Geedorah. But to most, he is simply DOOM…

The legend begins circa 1991. A man, calling himself Zev Love X, creates the hip hop trio KMD with his brother, DJ Subroc. Armed with a major label deal with Elektra and heavy play on Yo! MTV Raps and Rap City, KMD was destined for success. Their critically acclaimed debut, Mr. Hood, was their ticket to the American Dream.

But two short years later, tragedy struck. KMD was set to release their sophomore album, Black Bastards when DJ Subroc was killed in a car accident. That same week, they were dropped from Elektra and Black Bastards was shelved.

Reeling from the loss of his brother and exploited by a duplicitous music industry, Zev Love X became noticeably absent from the scene. Dealing with depression and “recovering from his wounds,” he swore revenge against “the industry that so badly deformed him.” During this time, the unreleased Black Bastards tape was bootlegged and his legend permeated every corner of the underground.

Four long years passed and Zev Love X and KMD were merely memories. Only the Black Bastards tape lived on. Hip Hop was still recovering from the losses of 2 Pac and Biggie. And the genre was on it’s way to monetary success and societal irrelevance. It was during this tenuous time, a man began freestyling at the Nuyrican Poets Cafe in New York. He wore a mask and spit fire. A legend reborn

Zev Love X was back, reborn as MF DOOM. Inspired by the comic book villains with whom he identified, he set out to exact his revenge on mainstream Hip Hop.

DOOM bucked fast growing trends like bitches, bling and fake gangsta posturing. He didn’t show up on 106th and Park with his hypeman and jewels rambling about his $90,000 watch. T-Pain never sang a hook on one of his songs. He never fed the machine of Hip Hop commercialism.

Instead, he embraced Hip Hop’s roots with his masterful flow, turntablism, and sick punchlines. He appeared on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and talked to a wad of meat. He featured Charles Bukowski on records. He became the epitome of independent Hip Hop.

From 1999’s Operation Doomsday to last month’s Born Like This, DOOM embodied the authenticity and developed the cultish following major label artists crave. But, not once, did he lose his integrity. Not once, did he deviate from his plan of exposing mainstream Hip Hop as the fraud it become.

So who won the epic battle of DOOM vs. The Mainstream? Let’s compare.

It’s 2009 and Hip Hop has been dead for a while. We’ve seen a number of faceless “artists” rise to the top only to be forgotten as soon as the next fad comes along (anyone remember D4L or Baby Huey or Shop Boyz?). Flo-Rida, Soulja Boy and T-Pain dominate the charts right now, but they will be the next victims of a fickle marketplace (teenage girls).

At the same time, MF DOOM has ruled the underground for ten years. He’s amassed 17 solo albums and countless other appearances. He’s worked with Madlib, Rhymesayers, Danger Mouse, J Dilla and so many others. Born Like This even debuted on the Billboard Top 100, proving that DOOM can beat the industry at their own game. Say hello to the motherfucking bad guy.

What…you thought I was gonna put up Born Like This Premonitions and not end up doing a review? Erroneous.

Since I already told you my feelings on the songs that leaked, click on that link if you wanna refer back to the songs I already reviewed, but for the sake of time and space I’m not gonna re-do those reviewings.

Born Like This Album Cover

Lemme start by saying this is the most badass incarnation of the mask so far, and also, I figure I should mention that for this album he has AGAIN changed his name, simply to DOOM. This name change is again accompanied by a slightly different rhyming style, although nowhere as drastic as rhyming like a 3 headed alien or a futuristic badass urban legend. This time around, DOOM is a supervillain (which he has called himself before but never devoted an entire album to).

The one last thing I think I should mention is that somehow (I didn’t think it was possible) DOOM’s voice has deteriorated even FURTHER, making it at times impossible to hear what he’s saying. He sounds like he’s been on a steady 1950’s diet of tobacco and whiskey

Tobacco and Whiskey cologne? Really?

since, well…the 1950’s. Let’s get it goin…

SUPERVILLAIN INTRO

Pointless other than the fact that it clues you in to DOOM’s new persona.

GAZZILION EAR (9)

This production is hot as SHIT. More than makes up for Dilla’s (RIP) slip up with Lightworks…although DOOM didn’t hafta choose to rap over it. Whatever. Both the original beat and the beat change are hot, and DOOM spits over them both equally aptly. At over 4 minutes, this is ALOT longer than I would ever expect a DOOM song to be, but at least it’s good.

BALLSKIN (8)

See Premonitions

YESSIR (8)

Although DOOM doesn’t spit at all over this, he does hook a beat up for Raekwon to spit one whole flow over the entire song on. I love the twist on UFO, the original song this was sampled from…I mean you can hear it in like nearly any old school song ever, but always in the background, never the main beat like this.

ABSOLUTELY (7)

Along with Cellz, this track is supposed to be about the future of the world, in which DOOM is a supervillain because the world has gone down the wrong path and even the superheroes are fighting for un-ideal justice. Interesting, but only solid.

RAP AMBUSH (9)

This shit is SICK. In kind of an apocalyptic setting that DOOM describes for us, the way rap battles take place is like an actual war…I’m between this and Gazillion Ear for best track on the album.

LIGHTWORKS (DB)

See Premonitions

BATTY BOYZ (8)

This track is interesting and funny as shit. DOOM would put out a diss on superheroes. Clearly this helps create the Supervillain atmosphere, and also gets props for mentioning John Henry who is the coolest folk hero.

When John Henry was just a little babyyyyyyy

STILL DOPE (6)

Funny, how’d he know I listen to his album in hopes of hearing Empress Starhh Tha Femcee?

MICROWAVE MAYO (7)

Except for the line “rapper jocks need to put a sock in their chatterbox” this song is kinda just…there.

MORE RHYMIN (DB)

That’s exactly what it is…more rhyming. Just rhymes. About nothing. Just words that rhyme.

THAT’S THAT (6)

See Premonitions

SUPERVILLAINZ (6)

This song doesn’t fit since they DON’T RHYME LIKE SUPERVILLAINS AT ALL. And even though I understand that the auto-tune is supposed to be a joke, it’s still annoying.

BUMPY’S MESSAGE

A phone call from Bumpy Knuckles talking about how good DOOM is. Useless.

THANK YAH

Why couldn’t he rap over this instead of Lightworks? Love the soul sample, although this is kinda cool as a thank you to the fans I guess…but would a supervillain really do that?

So would you buy this?

Ehhh thats a tough one for me. The production isn’t as characteristic of DOOM as his other albums are, and they don’t add to the persona that he portrays on the album. This album definitely has less throwaway tracks then alot of his other albums since he kept the skits and instrumentals to a minimum, but the nasty tracks on any DOOM-incarnation album are jusssssssttttt a tad bit under par.

Why did you say John Henry was the coolest folk hero?

Because he’s a manly man who was ridiculously strong and shittalked technology the way burly men should. I’m pretty sure he also ate a ton of meat.

Can I get another perspective on this album?

Screw you I’m the best and am always right. In fact, I’m so confident in the fact that I’m always right I will provide you with another review from one of my alliances because I know you will come crawling back to me for more.

Well I’ve been getting the most hits (aka bangouts) from my posts about MF DOOM and Her Favori

Well I’ve been getting the most hits (aka bangouts) from my posts about MF DOOM and Her Favorite Colo(u)r [which means I will later be reviewing Below the Heavens], but for now I’ll delve into the leaked tracks from MF DOOM’s (hypothetically) 2009 album, Born Like This. Here’s what will make this post worthwhile though…don’t you hate it when you’re looking for stuff about an album and the posts aren’t up to date and they only have information about like 1 or 2 things instead of everything that’s happened so far? I do and that’s why I’m not gonna do it to you…

BALLSKIN

For some reason (and it may just be the hits in the very beginning), this beat reminds me of Rock Co Kane Flow, but once he starts up his verse the difference between the two is unmistakable…this is his own song so he has the right to call it Ballskin and have it make less than half as much coherent sense – but don’t be mistaken, Doom proves that he is both still witty “Villain not his hair, he’s no Afro-American / if thats the case he be a bald-headed African” and flowtastic “In the place to be, don’t believe the hyperbole / it’s like a murder spree get sniped verbally”, so this song gets a positive review. On a side note, has anyone else noticed that Craig Mack is MF DOOM minus the production abilities, coolness, and pop culture references? (This mean’s hes a talentless MF DOOM)

LIGHTWORKS

Wait…what? What was that? MF DOOM’s free association here doesn’t work, and I don’t care if it was Dilla’s beat, that was confusing and random as shit. If this album really is supposed to be DOOM’s best (he said so) then I hope this doesn’t make the cut.

ANGELZ

As a favor, Ghostface shows up to rep over this track (I mean it was the least he could do seeing as how MF DOOM has been hookin him up with a bunch of beats lately), but for some reason chooses not to rap as aggressively as is his trademark. The production is solid (a shitload better than Lightworks), but still not DOOM’s best…I actually like DOOM’s verse better than Ghost’s. Also, for MF DOOM AND GHOSTFACE ON ONE TRACK, this song makes a lot more sense than I expected (and maybe more than it should)

CELLZ

After nearly 2 minutes of Charles Bukowski (I don’t know who he is either) reading his own poem, that, I’ll admit, fits perfectly with DOOM’s beat that sounds like the world is ending (which is what the poem is like) DOOM kicks some rhymes about crime (hey that rhymed…and also sounds like Rhymes Like Dimes, another MF DOOM song), which is why the song is named Cellz (as in prison cells, I expected it to be about the microscopic ones knowing DOOM), fitting with another theme of the opening poem. I guess my problem with this song is that it’s about something…DOOM is at his best when his songs are about nothing in particular but the lines are…that way he can ramble around with some ill lines and none of them sound out of place, but within the context of themselves they do…don’t get what I mean? You’ll see…

THAT’S THAT

The comments on the vid tell the tale…

“I am a serious DOOM fan, I have all his CDs and I think he’s king, but even I don’t really like when he spits those lazy sounding two word lines.. “cotton swab, dart lob” which is exactly what he does here but it’s still a good song, I’ve been bumpin Cellz more though”

…now do you see what I mean(even though I think Cellz is kind of an ehh song)? DOOM is at his best when the verses don’t make sense together but the rhymes do – the “cotton swab / dart lob” is a perfect example. Don’t get me wrong, though, not every line is as meaningless as those two and some are pretty flowtastic…”They key, plucked it off the mayor / threw it in the tar pits off La Brea playa” and theres some funny ones too “Give an MC a rectal historectomy”, and even though most people hate it I’m not most people and I think it’s funny when he sings Grand Puba at the end. I’ve still heard better DOOM songs though.

So there’s my feelings on the leaked Born Like This songs. If this is an effective barometer of the rest of the album, this will not be DOOM’s best album…it might even be one of his lesser ones (although it won’t be as bad as Venemous Villain, I liked like 1 song off that whole thing…even Viktor Vaughn didn’t like it “Dub it off your man, don’t spend the 10 bucks / I did it for the advance the back end sucks” – MF DOOM HIMSELF). Anyways, while you wait for the album to drop so you can LISTEN TO IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT (always my advice), enjoy a song I forgot to include on my post The Best of MF DOOM:

OPERATION DOOMSDAY

Guess who’s back and as good as always (I would say better than ever but I can’t get any better)…That’s right, Me.

Alright so the other day I was thrust back into the bizarre world of MF Doom, because my friend, founder of Funky Faction (CLICK THE LINK!) showed me a nastyyyy MF Doom song that I hadn’t heard before. For anyone who doesn’t know, MF Doom is a bald old guy that wears a mask and references completely random things and often makes up words when he is rapping…seriously.

This is him.

Anyway, another thing he does is make up multiple personalities for himself and raps in their own styles…lemme see there’s generic MF DOOM (which in itself is far from generic), King Geedorah (in which he is a 300 foot tall three headed space alien who just came to earth…seriously), and Viktor Vaughn (basically a scumbag badass who is like an urban legend). He’s also 1/2 of the groups Madvillain (him and Madlib) and DangerDoom (him and Danger Mouse). Doom is also a complete anomaly, because unlike many other rappers, he is as nasty behind the boards hookin up his own tracks as he is behind the mic. That’s kinda the problem though when it comes to his albums. I mean it’s great that he’s well rounded, look at some other people who are well rounded…

Rosie O'Donnell...get it? Cuz she's fat.

but the fact that he puts instrumentals on his own CD’s and often has 3-4 skits per CD makes his albums very difficult to listen to all the way through – which is why I compiled a list of the definitive MF Doom (and all his aliases) songs, the ones you HAVE to listen to.

Here’s a link to the playlist I made on imeem if you have an account (if not, you should make one…its free, they dont spam you or anything, my rap group (LOO$E CHANGE!) is on there, and they have a bunch of songs to listen to that I can’t find anywhere else.)

GREAT MF DOOM PLAYLIST CLICK HERE

Here are the songs, they’re all good but I’ll star lemme see like the top 15 or somethin:

Off of Take Me To Your Leader

*Fazers (This is a King Geedorah song, and oddly enough, my favorite MF DOOM song period but one of the few good songs on this album)

The Final Hour

Next Levels

Off of Vaudeville Villain

Lickupon

Raedawn

*Vaudeville Villain

*Saliva

*Change The Beat

Off of Madvillainy

*Raid

*All Caps

Rhinestone Cowboy

Off of Venemous Villain

Dope Skill

Off of MM…Food

*Hoe Cakes

One Beer

Kon Queso

Rap Snitch Knishes

*Hot Guacamole

Guinnesses

Off of The Mouse and the Mask

*Space Hoes

*The Mask

El Chupa Nibre

*Sofa King

*Old School

Bada Bing

Off of Misc.

*Monkey Suite

*Get ‘Er Done

*Rock Co Kane Flow (This is actually a De La Soul song but Doom gets the most verses and they’re all nasty)

Ballskin

So ya that about sums it up, peep these songs, get your underground game proper, because “average MC’s is like a TV Blooper, while MF DOOM is like D.B. Cooper” (look that reference up, or as I like to say WTS – Wikipedia That Shit). Oh ya that rhyme reminds me…DOOM rhymes sounds EXACTLY, no alteration, but I’m not sure if that’s an effect of him being so weird, or part of the reason why his rhymes are so weird…its ridiculous to rhyme exactly every time and thats why he’s the man.

It’s been a bit of a wait. MF Doom aka King Geedorah aka Metal Face Doom aka Viktor Vaughn has arisen. Who is MF Doom, you ask? He’s only arguably the best underground rapper there is. His untouchable mix of irreverent rhymes, clever wordplay and comic book obsession is the stuff legend is made of. Dating back to his day in the pioneering rap collective KMD in the early nineties, MF Doom has always been one of the more elusive enigmas in rap. His profile has increased steadily over the years thanks to word-of-mouth, the internet and live shows that are not to be missed. A modern classic record, the Madvillain project with producer Madlib, certainly doesn’t hurt either.

There is a new record coming in March from MF Doom entitled Born Like This. It will be released via Lex Records and if the track Ballskin uploaded to MySpace is any indication, then Born Like This will be yet another fantastic effort from Mr. Metal Face. Go to the MySpace page, listen to the track and support underground hip hop!

Recent speculations of the super-villain returning with a new album, “born into this“, got me real excited.
The album was slated to drop on the 21st of last month but now is TBA which is a bit of a fail but hopefully worth the wait.

DOOM covers Waxpoetics’, latest issue which has finally hit some bookstores in London (Borders for one) for a hefty £7.95.
Includes an interview with DOOM about life behind the mask and also sheds some light on the “DOOMPOSTER” controversy.

Doom on the beats, San Francisco MC Trunks holding the mic. If you’re huge Doom junkie then you’ll remember Trunks from the track Lockjaw (also included on this EP) which was featured on Doom’s King Geedorah album. Apparently Doom is going to be producing Trunks’ first LP. Some may be saddened to find there’s no actual verses from Metal Face himself but Trunks does a good job of filling the void with raps about everything from RPGs to Star Wars. Doom fans can certainly dig it if not everyone else.

And for good reason. He’s one of the most brilliant musicians of the last 50 years, and one of the best hip hop producers ever.

So I was happy to see this Dilla-produced track that leaked recently. “Sniper Elite” features MF DOOM rapping over Dilla’s beat “Anti-American Graffiti” off of the last album he released during his life, Donuts. DOOM sounds really good over the beat, but it’s a bit too much–”Anti-American Graffiti” stands as a great track on its own. If someone had to rap over it and make it more complicated to listen to, there were probably better choices than Daniel “My lyrics are insanely obtuse and I might have a speech impediment” Dumile.

Edit: You can buy the single here, via Stones Throw Records.

Download: “Sniper Elite” (via Nah Right. Please don’t start reading their blog instead of ours–I’m totally going to start getting more creative with these posts now that I’m getting settled into South Africa, I promise).
