So, I randomly had 125 hits to this blog yesterday with no referrer (which means people are typing henrymatt.com into their address bar). I have no idea what caused this. The internet is weird.

Today was the culmination of a lot of hard work. True, a lot of times I say that I work hard and I don’t really work hard, but I spent four consecutive weekends in the library, including the afternoons of Tuesday and Thursdays and whatever time I could fit in the cracks going back about three months preparing for today, the JLPT.

Back in June, I figured that by this time I could take level 3 if I was feeling bored, but level 2 was way out of reach. But during midterm consultations with one of my teachers, she told me that I could probably take level 2 and have a good chance at passing it. Considering that I usually have much more delusional expectations of myself than others, this surprised me enough that I decided to give it a shot.

The course content of level 4 at KCP targets some JLPT 2 material specifically (under the creative title of “JLPT 2 Grammar”). The idea is that by level 5, all the material for the JLPT 2 has been covered in class. Me and many of my classmates who also took the test, being in level 4, had to do some significant work outside of class in order to have a chance.

Regardless of whether or not I actually passed the test (which I at no point considered a done deal — even now), it was nice to have some sort of guide post to look to. As I’ve thoroughly documented in this blog, I came to Japan with a very lopsided understanding of the language. I knew a ton of kanji but I didn’t know any of the words that people actually use in daily life. I could carry a conversation, but I would make about three errors a sentence and nobody ever corrected me. In my first semester at KCP, I would go from finding certain things incredibly easy to suddenly be completely lost in a five minute span. This is because I taught myself, and I’m a terrible teacher.

So one of the main things that attracted me to attempting the test is that it would allow me to get my skill level up to a certain, standardized point. Every category of the language needs to get to a certain, definite point. It forces you to work hard on the parts you’re weak at and balance everything out. So, while having a certificate that says I passed JLPT 2 would be nice, I was more looking forward to being able to concretely measure where I’m at. I now know that JLPT 2 books are going to contain material that I’ve already covered and JLPT 1 books are going to contain something new. All across the board. So I don’t need to think “oh, this book would be good for grammar but the kanji is way too easy” or “here’s a good book for kanji but holy crap these example sentences are ridiculous”.

Going forward, past the sheltered environment of KCP where I am protected from my own foolish mistakes, this is important for choosing my own self study curriculum. I also talked with a level 5 teacher and he said that I could basically just get some JLPT 1 test preparation books and it would be pretty similar to the curriculum I would have gotten in level 5 and 6.

But as for the test itself… I went to sleep really early the night before and woke up at 6:00 in order that I could act like a responsible student and take a shower, have breakfast, and be alert enough for test. It took about an hour to get to the test site, a university. The staff of the test were all very professionally dressed, with a yellow band around their arms indicating they were staff. I found my way into room 202, a large classroom with about 64 seats. The demographics were pretty predictable: mostly Korean or Chinese, with a lot of Malaysian students as well. Of the western kids, I found out that most of them were actually Italian. In my classroom, there were perhaps four Americans including me, although I can’t know for sure.

One thing I was happy about was that I was seated in the very middle, in the second row back. The listening comprehension exercises at school are typically from a cassette tape (seriously, Japan?) and the recording quality ranges from bad (the professionally made tapes) to awful (the ones that KCP teachers recorded themselves, from the sounds of it, in one of the bathrooms). It’s perhaps a cop-out to blame poor performance on this, but it’s kind of a big deal.

The JLPT is split into three sections, with a break between each one. The first section was Vocabulary/Sentences. This mainly focused on the usage of words, and matching kanji compounds with their readings. If it’s possible for me to say I have one section that I’m good at, it’s this. After the first section, I was feeling pretty cocky. There were also about three questions that I only knew the answer because I had studied them the day before. That’s probably more luck than anything, but so often in tests I get asked the one word that I didn’t study, so it was nice to have a reversal when it actually mattered.

The second section is the dreaded listening comprehension. But I found that it was surprisingly manageable when I actually hung on each word like grim death. In class, perhaps my eyes glaze over a bit during the long listening comprehension lessons. For the hour that this section took place though, I made sure to listen to every word. One of my teachers gave me advice when I brought up my difficulty with listening comprehension at the most recent midterm discussion; to visualize something while listening. I found that trying to listen to each word and hoping that no words I’ve never heard of pop up just results in my entire train of thought being shafted as soon as those words inevitably do pop up. Instead, my teacher told me to imagine the situation being described as a situation, cast friends in the roles, and just build the image in your head with the description from the audio. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this, because I’m a visual person to a fault, but it made a lot of sense when I put it into practice and the listening section went well in part because of it.

After the second section, I grabbed just enough lunch that it would keep me running but not so much that I would get tired like I always do. I also had a chance to talk to one of the Italian dudes, who was a designer. I like to glorify what I do as “motion graphic design”, so I was able to talk to him a little about that. I find that getting burnt out is a state unrepairable by anything but sleep, so it was nice to talk about something completely not Japanese for a few minutes. Similarly, when I study in the library, I often go and look at the English books when I start to feel the onset of burn out.

The third section is reading comprehension and grammar. It was worth the same amount of points as the last two sections combined, so I couldn’t coast on it. Whether or not I can do reading comprehension well or not is depending on my mental state, and I haven’t exactly pinned down the formula to get to said state. Sometimes I’ll just look at a sentence and think “that makes no dang sense” and sometimes I’ll breeze through a paragraph.

The reading comprehension confirmed my suspicion that the practice books I was using actually contained harder material than the test itself. Usually in a long passage, there will be about eight very difficult words with footnotes that explained the meaning, but there were perhaps twice that many words within the passage that were just as hard. In the test, I understood almost all the words and even some of those that were called out in footnotes. The questions were a little abstract for my liking. There were hardly any questions that had answers that jumped out as definitely right or definitely wrong. I also had to read very quickly. Although I didn’t bring a clock with me, my internal clock was telling me to book it even though the meaning of the sentences were a little uncertain. After all, it would be a shame to not get to the 40 grammar questions because I was hung up on the 20 reading questions.

Accepting that I was not going to get a hundred percent on the reading, I finished up and moved onto grammar. Here, I also had to thank the books I used to prepare for the test, as I recognized a lot of question patterns. As I got closer and closer to the end, I started to think that it would probably be very cathartic to finally be done with this. Just ten more, just five more, just two more… I literally filled in the last bubble as the proctor called time. And rather than feeling as if I completed something large, I felt like there was still a lot of work to do yet. All memory of the first two sections were gone, and I was too focused on all the half-guesses I had to make during this section. I still had a lot of work to do…. not in order to pass the test — I think worst case scenario I still pass — but in order to get to the point where I can leave here feeling like I’ve really accomplished something. How’s that for lame? Look, I’m trying to feel good about my accomplishments, but my brain won’t let me. Oh well.

As a reward for myself, I went to Kinokuniya and bought a book in English. Reading it on the train back to Minami Senju was a nice feeling. Like, “ha, I can understand every word!” And then the word “exsanguinate” popped up and even that cockiness was gone.

Oh, by the way, we have a test tomorrow and some homework due as well. It’s a good thing I don’t have a social life over here…

Haluu~!

I’ve never been to bookstore since 2 months ago. It was pretty hectic for me this 2 3 months. So yesterday I had some free time so I decided to go to bookstore. I went to Times Bookstore at Hartamas Shopping Centre. Although it’s quite a small one compared to other bookstore but I like going there. It’s nice and cozy. While I was searching for some leisure time readings, I found this book.

Sophie's World

Yup! This one is one of the bestsellers out there. I know this one is one heavy reading, but try it! It took me about a month to finish this book, although normally it’s only 2 weeks. Because I want to understand every detail the writer wrote in there. It’s about philosophy but in casual way.

You can read about it in here.

This weekend, I was blessed with the opportunity to meet up with some Singaporean comrades, Zh3us,Yuki-To, Ederuferuto, User66b, and ScorchNRoses, who showed me around the city’s main Anime hotspots. While I’ve been to Singapore many times before this, I never knew where all the good anime stores were. I was limited to the major shopping malls, which were typically over-priced, and incredibly limited in selection. With my new friends, I got to see the more “underside” of where all the best stuff could be found.

I was a little sad that Kodomut couldn’t make it. He was busy washing his nendoroids. The meeting started at Chinatown Station. From there we walked to the through the Hong Lim Plaza to the China Square flea market which happens every Sunday. After that, we had a bit of lunch, hopped onto the bus and got to Sunshine Plaza for some good stuff. From there we walked to Dhoby Ghaut, hit up Plaza Singapura, and then walked to Orchard Road, and ended the trip at the roof of Orchard Central. After splitting up, my friend and I took the MRT to City Hall, and walked to Funan Center, from there walked to Clarke Quay, and then to Liang Court’s Kinokuniya, before walking back to Clarke Quay, and boarded the MRT at Central to go back home. Phew! That’s A LOT of walking!

Here’s the flea market. It’s not really a flea market, since there are shops around. It’s more like a Sidewalk Sale, with the shops bringing out their “deal wares”. But the locals do rent tables to display their wares too.

Some of the locals are more shameless than the others. I’m quite sure these T-shirts are not meant to be worn in public.

I’ve never seen a Mega Bloks Zaku II. Pretty darn cool and well done!

Lunch at a restaurant just down the street. This is definitely local food how it’s meant to be eaten!

Not mine. It’s the first time I’ve actually seen one of these. I had no idea how small they actually are!

“I’m trapped in chopsticks!”

Parts and stuff.

Setting up for a shot.

Mmmm… Kitty Soup!

This is what was happening behind when Ederufureto was snapping a pic. Smoked cheese anywhere? Nyoro~n…

No smoked cheese, but incredibly delicious chicken rice. Nom nom nom!

Comrades Zh3us and Yuki-to, chewin their grub. I lol’d after I put on the double-Miku. ^o^

Delicious chicken with soy sauce. Chun! You miss it, amirite?!

Garfield themed christmas decorations. Garfield??!

Crossing the street. I had a video of it, but didn’t upload it to youtube yet. Oh wells.

Chinatown Point.

Street.

We’re at Sunshine Plaza now! These guys were at AFA. You recognize the “End of the Queue” sign? Lots of anime merchandise.

Lots.

And lots. Was tempted to get the Valkyria Chronicles metal cup. But it’s VERY VERY small.

Good Job Gundams.

I am not even a fraction of this skill.

Amazed. I wonder if you know who’s face that is in the back…

On the way to the next destination. Starbucks here is like Starbucks anywhere else. EVERY patron in there has a laptop.

Would you drink from a pink dolphin? ^^;

Contains plenty of vitamins!

At the top of Plaza Singapura. Lots of anime shops on the top floor. All of them over-priced.

These Xmas decorations look more like Chinese New Year decorations. I’m sure they reuse them come CNY.

At the arcade. Some sorta touch based rhythm game. It’s really shit compared to DJ Max Technika. Don’t waste your time on this garbage (offense meant entirely in that statement. If you play this game, you don’t know what you’re missing). Obviously I’m a huge DJ Max fan.

UFO! UFO! Good luck winning one of these!

On Orchard Road. What I love about Orchard Road is the balance between concrete jungle, and canopies of trees. Absolutely a sight to behold.

Orchard Central. The advert for this place features two caucasian people racing to the top of the mall. The mall itself is just as confusing as the advert. Most of the locals all agree that this “vertical mall” is poorly designed, confusing, and offensive (the high end shops are closer to the top, while the “commoners” shops are in B level.

On the way to the top. See, if one of those caucasian racers just took this, to the top, they would have won.

A view from the top. The doors are entirely glass, so you get an excellent view to your death should the doors suddenly open.

Just a bit from the top. I was amazed at this view.

Here’s the top! You’re greeted to this breathtaking view just after emerging from the stairs.

A close-up to show you how good my crappy point-and-shoot can do.

So the Singtel building is taller than the Orchard Central building. This is where everyone’s money ends up going, I guess…

Beautiful view is beautiful.

Marco! Polo! (sorry, Uncharted 2 reference).

Well, I guess this camera is capable of SOME form of bokeh.

Behind the scenes. You may recognize this shot, no?

The pathway to the other side of the garden.

A skate park down below.

More breathtaking scenery. Singapore is definitely a highly populated city. So many buildings! The best part is it’s like a mini-Tokyo, but without the pollution!

Oh so cute! Who do you belong to? ^_^

Yes, I took a shot of these funny wirey figures too.

Oops, we’ve got a hurt Nendoroid. Not sure if the damage can be fixed.

Setting up for a pic.

I was very amazed that she was able to stand on that obtusely angled rock. Excellent job!

*click*

The equipment. I accidentally kicked the whole box over and all the parts went everywhere! I even got my bag wet too. Gomenasai!

Clark Quay. Beautiful view! It was a great day! I can’t believe how *kinda* tired I was at this point.

I sometimes hate my camera’s inability to take good pictures. Vancouver has a similar boating setup at Granville Island.

This one required some photoshopping to make it look “a little” better.

This is where you get all the western food. It’s a tourist area here. If you want to feel like you’re on vacation but still feel at home, this is the place to go.

Info.

More food. I wonder how “authentically caribbean” the food here is.

Finally, Liang Court. Kinokuniya! This one is pretty darn small. Iwase Books in Richmond (Vancouver) is bigger than this one.

Kitty Goods.

Visual Novels. Without the Visual.

LOTS of manga. LOTS.

Dolls! Chun, are you into these?

It’s actually very pretty, and a little creepy at the same time.

Walked back to Clarke Quay looking for an MRT station. Day trip about to end. You can see the sun setting.

Dunno about the food, but the decor looks very awesome. Probably have to pay through the nose though.

This is where the MRT station is, under this mall! I should have known – want to get to an MRT station? Find a shopping complex.

Beautiful…

Last pic before leaving. Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I appreciate the time you guys took to take me around the city! I’ve never walked that much at once in Singapore before, and it was truly a great experience. I’ll never forget it! ^_____^

I hope you enjoyed my ultra-long post of the day’s outing!

Our HallyuHoneys readers have been asking why has there been such a gap in our blog postings lately

Our HallyuHoneys readers have been asking why has there been such a gap in our blog postings lately and we feel it’s time we answer that question for you all. Currently, Tiffny and I have embarked on a new endeavor for our involvement in the entertainment industry. We are no longer just bloggers or reporters but organizers of rare and exclusive events, let us tell you about it…

Our first test event was held at Kinokuniya. We invited local J-rock bands Uzuhi, Noircuer, and Geist, to participate in a live interview and panel hosted by The Lady Miz Diva Velez. Our Miz Diva runs her very own pop-culture hub over at the Diva Review. Her amazing personality, super cool looks and cultured poise made her the perfect host! With that day being a smashing success, we have now climbed up the ladder and our most recent event for which we again teamed up with the lovely Lady Miz Diva was also held at Kinokuniya. This time our featured guests were none other than DIR EN GREY.

Yes, you read correct, Dir En Grey the most successful Japanese rock export to hit the States, were brought to fans in part by us for this exclusive event. We’ve transformed into a non-for-profit-arts company called 2gNY and with our sister company La-umi, came together under The Diva Review to become The Diva Crew.

You can imagine our excitement as our 6 foot banner featuring artwork and logo’s that Tiffny designed graced the second floor windows of Kinokuniya, overlooking Bryant Park at the Ave of the Americas. More so our collectable posters that again, Tiffny designed, were given out toVIP, Press and contest winners. These items were then signed by Dir En Grey for fans at the event. The band and their team was truly impressed at the end of the evening, and hearing directly from the band of their gratitude was so worth it.

So now you know why… and yes we are working with so many more amazing export Asian artists very soon. Meet & Greets, Live Panels, Unplugged and Exclusive performances are going to be coming your way. All brought to you by your Hallyu Honeys Mia and Tiffny aka 2gNY!

If you would like to know more about what we have planned and maybe become a sponsor feel free to email us and we can send you our upcoming calendar asap.

As the sun set, my patience ran out! Felt like I have a quest to complete in Kinokuniya! Urged Mr Khoo to drive me downtown, Yes! Thank you very much!

Upon reaching the..I called it the “Nicholas Sparks Section”, I just stood in front of the books and smiled.

Nicholas Sparks in Kinokuniya, Takashimaya

The titles all there! My heart was waving to all of them… cos I do want to be a collector of his books. But there’s so many types of covers. Hmm

Anyway, my 2nd read after “The Notebook”…

The Choice by Nicholas Sparks

Nicholas Sparks, author of “The Notebook”. He showed how love is like from a man’

Nicholas Sparks, author of “The Notebook”. He showed how love is like from a man’s perceptive. I always thought women are giver and men takes …until I read his book.

Last night, not sure what happened. Suddenly, obsessed about getting one of his books, “The Choice”.

The Choice

Shared my deep interest with Mrs Ho over msn.. she has “The Notebook”! An hour later, took my mum out for lunch ,who then accompanied me to search for “The Choice”..

Went to following bookstores..sadly, no found:

Popular @ tampines mall(Limited titles)

San Bookstore (Most titles found but “The Choice” was out!)

Times @ Tampines One(Limited titles)

I called Borders, no answer. And then Kinokuniya, bugis number is wrong while main store at Taka is unavailable..goodness!

In the end, I went online, Kinokuniya’s Bookweb to order “The Choice”. $5 per delivery… very convenient..nah decided to self-collect instead as I simply can’t wait! Hmm what’s wrong with me?

Getting impatient with things I want. Guess its because I know how to get it that’s why.

The Little Red Helicopter is launched! I am a winner of the First Time Writers and Illustrator

The Little Red Helicopter is launched! I am a winner of the First Time Writers and Illustrators Publishing Initiative 2009! This is one of the most important milestones of my life. It’s a dream come true for me to have my book published, and not even self-published; but Little Red Helicopter was acknowledged by National Book Development Council and Singapore Press Holdings to be worthy of publication.
The launch was held on 24 October 2009 at Arts House. I invited my family, my cell leader and my Writers’ Group and they were so gracious to give their Saturday nite to attend. Altogether, there were about 90 people at the Launch, including guests of the other eight winners.
For the Writers’ Group, I hope that witnessing this launch will be an added incentive for the authors to quickly finish their books!
I am glad that my illustrator, Sheng Hua, got many good comments that nite – many people appreciated the flowy style of her illustrations and her rich colours. I am not being biased by saying that her art was by far the best among all the nine winners!
We sold quite a few copies at the launch. We will be giving a book reading at Arts House on 28th (Wednesday) and another at Kinokuniya in February. I’ve told hundreds of bedtime stories to my three children, but it’s different doing it in a busy bookstore in front of other children, and with their parents hovering nearby! I have butterflies thinking about it.
I don’t want to stop here. I hope to conduct more book readings and am sending SPH my second story which I have already written.

How the fuck did i end up with 113 plays of Marié Digby on lastfm?

i only like Daybreak & Avalanche by her (okay tad too pop-ish for me) BUT still… they are quite good surprising. i muz have fallen asleep while listening to her songz on one of the nights and that must have caused this “uprise”. pardon the language haha.

okay ‘nuf about her, i’m actually starting to look forward to every night from now on, hmm. been spending them at kinokuniya till they close before proceeding to starbucks to read and get free cakes + frapz. i bought a tumblr for $17 and i have left it there, so i could get free drinks from now on (please don’t tell anyone, its suppose to be a secret between the starbucks staff & me)

Been digging Age Of The Five by Trudi Canavan and i’m on Book 2 (Last Of The Wilds) currently. hope to finish it by sat and i could move to the last book on sunday. ‘ve also been a fanboy of late. going to print about 60 odd pictures of Anna Selezneva and put my drawing skillz to test HAHA. i adore her so much-

I spent most of last week doing talks and workshops on aspects of anime and manga, in venues ranging

I spent most of last week doing talks and workshops on aspects of anime and manga, in venues ranging from a nineteenth-century wood-panelled room looking out on glorious autumnal parkland to an urban classroom, and got lovely feedback from all of them.

That’s not always a given, as anyone who does this kind of thing will tell you. Sometimes, however hard everyone tries, a talk or workshop just doesn’t work. If you pick up the first stirrings of disengagement – and believe me, after the first time it happens, you pick them up very quickly – you can pull things together and turn them around so that everybody gets something out of the experience. But if you’ve done your preparation properly, know your material, have checked out your group, and are ready to shift your emphasis so as to give them the right challenge, you usually get happy participants and good feedback.

Last week, the feedback was superb. A week like that creates a wonderful aura, a glow of contentment and satisfaction that would, I’m sure, make one absolutely insufferable if it were maintained. Luckily the next week has its own challenges, so I can’t afford to bask for too long. It’s nice while it lasts, though.

This week opened with the launch of The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga at Kinokuniya’s Avenue of the Americas branch in New York, and will close with the UK launch at MCM Expo at Excel. I’m hoping for more good reviews!

after my CLUBCOUTURE meeting yesterday, i called ben to see if he was still at the clinic…i wa

after my CLUBCOUTURE meeting yesterday, i called ben to see if he was still at the clinic…i was just itching to see him for some reason. he was halfway through, so i went to the post office, and then to kino… and guess what? i picked up the most awesome bag!

this YSL tote comes with the Yves Saint Laurent Beaute Official Book and costs just S$29.60! i love the embroided logos along the handles and the interior is hot pink! this will be my most used bag from now on i’m sure…

and when i was done with retail theraphy, i took a train back to the north to meet ben to get dinner… well we ended up buying macs on the way back and see what good they did to my filet-o-fish…

stuuuuuuuupid i tell you.

who makes burgers like that?

and whatever i managed to scrap off the box didn’t even cover 1/4 of my burger. what is this? but yea, i ate it anyway… what to do? i was really hungry. if we didn’t do takeaways and had it there, i would have blown my top! at least then i would get a proper one….

back to ben’s medical, so it turns out his knee cap is slightly… how do i say this, out of alignment? looks like we all got bone problems… haha! well, at least he gets physio, i don’t!

so running around all day… was it worth it? you bet…

cos i got my hug, and kiss too

…only you can make me smile like that

and i’m an ace at packing bags! ben was trying to squeeeze everything into the bag but he was just doing it all wrong… i took everything out and repacked it all in with ease… you should have seen his face! LOL!

4 cup noodles, 1 bag of ruffles, 1 water bottle and his other stuff all nice and snug!

check!

time really flies so fast when you don’t want it to… by 730 ben had to leave for camp again, and i went to gardens to meet with Neng to catch up and talk about photoshoot ideas… and then he told me about the photo of me that everyone has been raving about on facebook…

my reaction : a photo of me on facebook that everyone is raving about?

how come i don’t know?

so it turns out this is the photo he was referring to…

this was taken in like december last year for a competition held by The National Heart Foundation… it’s one of those random shots that wasn’t submitted… i had seen this photo so many times over, but i only found that this is actually me today. is that dumb or what? to not recognise yourself in a photo when you see it… i think i’m the only idiot capable of that. >_<

anyhoos, it’s 125am, and i’m going to wash up and go to bed. i’m so tired today really… and i can’t wait to jump out of bed refreshed in the morning and start getting creative and getting down to replying emails!

good night!

xoxo
