O que é o Kinux: O Kinux Linux é uma distribuição Linux 100% brasileira, e é mantido hoje, pelo grupo de desenvolvimento da comunidade KinuX. Many Linux users make use of the KDE or GNOME desktop environments and when it comes to file management, they don’t venture beyond using the environment-provided file management tools like Konqueror or Nautilus.

Considering this is Linux, there are many other file management tools to choose from, some of which you may find preferable to the “defaults”.

Gentoo file manager

One such file management tool is called Gentoo, not to be confused with the Linux distribution of the same name. Gentoo hasn’t been updated in a few years, but it is still a solid file manager. Some distributions include it, so it is just an apt-get or yum command away; for others that do not include it, all you need to build it from source are the GTK+ development files and libraries. The latter will be installed with any GNOME system. To build from source, it’s a ./configure; make; make install away from usability.

Gentoo is nice in that it is a GTK+-based application with a dual-paned file view, reminiscent of old tools like Total Commander or Norton Commander. It is extremely configurable with a powerful file recognition system that allows you to map what happens when you double-click a file type, select which icons belong to what types of files, etc.

Krusader

For those who prefer using KDE, Krusader is another stellar file management tool. Like Gentoo, it is a dual-paned file management utility that is extremely customisable. The latest beta of Krusader is compatible with KDE4, whereas previous stable versions are written for KDE3. Some of Krusader’s notable features include impressive archive handling, advanced searching, an internal viewer/editor, file content comparisons and directory synchronisation. It can also handle remote file systems by using KIO slaves, which means it can mount SMB or FTP file systems. Many distributions provide Krusader.

Midnight Commander

Finally, for those who want a file management tool very similar to Norton Commander and that operates on the CLI, Midnight Commander is the best choice. Midnight Commander is available for nearly all Linux distributions; the package may be named mc, which is also the name of the program. MC gives a dual-paned file view, each representing a different directory. When executed in a terminal under X, mouse clicks work, so if MC is your preference but you want to use it in a GUI, it’s still an option. Another nice feature of MC is that it still keeps a command-line open so you can use a combination of directory navigation and CLI commands, made even easier by using the tab key to switch active panes.

These are just three examples of many other file management, or “file commander” type programs available for Linux. Others include Tux Commander, XFE, and Gnome Commander. If the default file management tools don’t quite cut it, or if you prefer the dual-paned file system view, give one of these programs a try.

Windows User has entered chatroom: help

Windows User: Hey, can I get some help? I keep getting an error message when I try to run Photoshop CS.

Linux User: Switch to Linux.

Windows User: Isn’t it a bit extreme to change my operating system because of the error in Photoshop? All I want to know is how to fix the error.

Linux User: Look, I’m going to give it to you straight. Microsoft are terrible when it comes to security. For your own sake, switch to Linux so you don’t get infected by viruses or trojans.

Windows User: But I never open any unwanted email attachments, and besides I have a virus scanner which I update daily plus a firewall. Do I really need to use Linux?

Linux User: Microsoft want to take over the entire software market, and the internet. If they succeed, it will make life hell for all of us who use open-source software instead of Micro$oft’s proprietary software.

Windows User: What is open-source and proprietary software?

Linux User: Open-source software is developed by many people who spread goodwill and love by contributing to the source code. Proprietary software is just an extension of fascism. Microsoft’s attempts to compete against Linux can be compared to Hitler’s persecution of the Jews. It’s practically the same thing. In summary, open-source software is superior to proprietary software.

Windows User: Why is open-source software better for me, as a consumer?

Linux User: OPEN-SOURCE IS JUST BETTER OK? Jeez, you sound like a Microsoft employee. Get a reality check! Everybody knows open-source is the only way forward. Buy a Linux distribution such as Slackware or Gentoo from your local software store.

Windows User: Ok, you’ve convinced me. I’m going to the store now to buy Linux now. Thanks for the help.

Linux User: No problem. Anything to loosen Micro$oft’s grip on the world

[a few hours later]

Windows User: The store didn’t have Slackware or Gentoo. I ended up choosing SuSE Linux.

Linux User: That’s fine. Did you install Linux yet?

Windows User: I’m using it right now. Ok, so how do I set it up so I can play my games on Linux with my Radeon 9200 graphics card? Also, Photoshop doesn’t run at all under Linux unless I use something called WINE which makes it even more buggy than it was on Windows.

Windows User: Hello?

Windows User: Yo?

Windows User: Are you still there?

It Is Just Funny

Passadas duas semanas do evento, e um pouco de agonia após apresentação de seminários e provas na faculdade, somente agora venho deixar meu breve relato do II ENSL.

Entre palestras, oficinas e stands, procurei absorver ao máximo os conhecimentos livremente passados pelos presentes no evento. Cheguei na sexta-feira, a tempo de comprimentar os representantes da comunidade Ubuntu-Br e Fedora Brasil os conterrêneos (Alex – Cristiano, vulgo Jason) e assistir a abertura oficial.

No sábado presenciei palestras de excelente conteúdo. Fiquei só um pouco chateado, para não dizer “puto da vida”, por ter perdido a oficila de shell script com o Júlio Neves (que por sinal lotou a sala!) =\ Mas em contra partida assisti a palestra do Evandro Curvelo – Segurança na Internet (que foi muito boa!).

Ainda no sábado tive a oportunidade de assistir a palestra do Hugo sobre Arch Linux, e posteriormente tirar algunas dúvidas com ele, até mesmo pegar minha cópia da distro. =P Entre todas as distribuições apresentadas no ENSL, o que me chamou mais atenção foi o Kinux, desenvolvido com base no slackware por garotos (estudantes do cefet-se) com idade máxima de 16 anos. Dava para sentir a empolgação deles por estarem participando do evento. =]

No domingo, depois de uma farra no sábado a noite (risos) acordei muito tarde, e resolvi sair para observar a orla de Atalaia. Pela tarde, retornei ao evento, e pude fazer alguns contatos e conhecer outras pessoas movidas a software livre. Enfim, a organização está de parabéns pelo evento. Que venha o III ENSL aqui na Bahia!!!
