Word from XONA Media, via Contact Music (with thanks to Scumbag Style for pointing it out to me), indicates that kiosk-based DVD rentals may soon be a thing of the past. Meet the MK3 DVD+Digital, a video/game rental kiosk that not only rents out DVDs, but also allows users to connect their USB flash drives to download the data in as little as ten seconds, thanks to new USB 3.0 technology. The data deletes itself once the feature is watched, and boom, you don’t have to run back to the Redbox. The MK3 is also more cost-effective than the Redbox kiosks, starting at just under $5,000, compared to the predecessor’s $15,000 to $25,000. Symwave are the developers behind the MK3’s USB 3.0 tech, which according to their specs, downloads DVD-sized files (6 GB) in 20 seconds and Blu-Ray-sized files (25 GB) in an astonishing 1 minute and 40 seconds.

At $75 Apiece, I'll Take Four.

FuseProject, the people who brought the XO Laptop, a $199 computer that brings connectivity to kids in need, to the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Program, have announced the concept of the XOXO Laptop, slated for release in 2010. According to Tech Generation Daily, the device hopes to be released at $75, though as BBC News points out, the XO Laptop was shooting for $100 and came in at $200. It will depend on technology that hasn’t been released yet, and depend on subsidies from bulk orders by governments buying them for their children, but all-in-all the idea is not completely unbelievable. With 2010 projected to be a big year for tablets, a 2010 ear-mark for distribution is completely feasible - and I’ll get to be jealous of school children in Europe.

Opening Christmas Day is Guy Ritchie’s adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous character, Sherlock Holmes. Played by Robert Downey Jr., with assistance from Jude Law’s Dr. John Watson, this film has been one of the most anticipated for me since I saw the trailer this summer (during the terrible Terminator: Salvation). Stack my favorite contemporary actor upon one of the greatest directors of all time and you’ve got, to me, a romping, stomping, action-packed, witty, and spectacular walk through 19th century London that is not to be missed opening day. The Wall Street Journal reviews it with something of a heavy hand, complaining about Ritchie’s fascination with the criminal element and Holmes’ use of martial arts, but does rate the performances as exemplary, thankfully. Regardless, I look forward to spending my Jewish Christmas (Chinese food and a movie, for the uninitiated) at the matinée.

Just on the edge of Piazzale Roma, the city bus station, the Italian Postal System has erected a handy full-service post office. It is an ideal place to exchange money as you head into town from the airport, or to drop off that last postcard on your way out. Before you rule out these two words being together I would like to direct your attention to a movie or Motion Picture.  This dichotomy is something that we have accepted as being ok even though a picture intrinsically does not move. But a picture can have motion.  In the case of art critiques you have probably heard “this painting has a real sense of movement” in that the strokes of paint together pull the eye across the canvas.

In my module this sense of movement is conveyed by the process of creating the slant.  When applying a force to a corner of a box the box has a tendency shear ////or give-way to the force. Now if we were to freeze that position and stabilize it into a structure we have successfully frozen motion, like a picture.

Taking movement one step further we can look at what happens when we view a series of “frozen movement” pictures one after another in and animated fashion.  Your perception of the altering scenes of the pictures gives the impression of movement.  This sense of movement can also be experienced by passing a corn field in your car and seeing the rhythmic pattern being formed by the spacing of the repeating stalks and the sky.

This sense of movement is presented to the observer by use of the timber cladding encasing the perimeter walls.  Depending on the direction and speed at which one is seeing the cladding, movement is formed through repetition.

So there is the frozen movement perceived from walking pedestrians and the movement of the cladding through the perspective of cars passing by.

After several months of planning, design and prototyping, our new checkin kiosks arrived just the other day.

For those of you who live and breath within the church IT world, those words may sound a little familiar. That’s because they’re lifted from inspired by this blog post from Jason Powell.

If you check out his post (specifically the pictures), you’ll see why. The kiosks themself have been inspired by what they have at Granger Community Church. In the US the kiosks are supplied by a company called Cornerstone Cabinetry. We did toy with the idea of having shipped from the US to Australia (which was actually very competitively priced… surprisingly), but in the end opted to design our own and have a local cabinet maker (About Town Cabinets & Shopfitting) do the work so that we could match the style and materials of other items we already have from them.

So, here’s the end result.
The top of the unit features a fixed shelf which is ample size for the touchscreen, printer, barcode scanner and keyboard (when required). The LG touchscreens can be folded completely flat allowing for the aluminium roll-top to be closed (and locked).

We’re still commissioning/configuring the hardware, but I’ll do a part two and show you more when they’re up’n’running in our new kids checkin area, but that probably won’t be until February.

Underground Persian-Canadian rock band Kiosk partners up with Mohsen Namjoo. I say holy alliance.

Jeszcze kilka lat temu w dzielnicy fabrycznej Kraśnika było 20. czynnych punktów sprzedaży prasy i papierosów, należących do firmy RUCH. Dziś są tylko trzy: niedaleko szpitala, na przystanku busów oraz przy ulicy Krasińskiego 19.

Wcześniej na karty historii przeniosły się sytuacje, które w czasach PRL towarzyszyły handlowi w kioskach. W tamtym okresie wiele tytułów prasowych, poza codziennymi, było drukowanych w nakładzie mniejszym niż oczekiwał tego rynek. Kto miał znajomego kioskarza mógł sobie założyć tzw. teczkę, do której była odkładana ulubiona gazeta. Pozostali musieli liczyć na łut szczęścia. Poszukiwanymi tytułami były m.in. PANORAMA, MOTOR czy FORUM. Młodzi chłopcy za wszelką cenę starali się zdobyć „Małego modelarza”, w którym drukowane były kartonowe modele samolotów, statków lub wozów bojowych.

Kilku tytułów, głównie PERSPEKTYW i PANORAMY poszukiwano ze względu na drukowane w nich zdjęcia z wystaw WENUS. Te były później wycinane i wklejane do specjalnie w tym celu zakładanych zeszytów. Miłośnicy motoryzacji wycinali dla odmiany z kolorowych gazet zdjęcia samochodów. Zeszyty z lekko rozebranymi paniami i nowościami ze świata motoryzacji krążyły następnie między znajomymi.

PANORAMA zawdzięczała również swoją popularność temu, że były w niej drukowane zdjęcia formatu A 4, najlepszych w danym okresie, zespołów klubowych w piłkę nożną. Przed mistrzostwami świata w futbolu drukowano zaś reprezentacje uczestników. Zdjęcia z gazety trafiały na słomianki i stanowiły wystrój pokoju.

Podobnych sytuacji z czasów PRL, towarzyszących handlowi w kioskach RUCH było więcej. Dziś brzmi to śmiesznie, dla ludzi młodych zapewne niewiarygodnie.
