I was watching E!’s show 10 Vampires We Love shortly after I came home from watching New Moon.

I was watching E!’s show 10 Vampires We Love shortly after I came home from watching New Moon. The show was a countdown of the vampires that the people of E! like. I’ll include the list at the end of this post. Anyway, I have a bone to pick with who they chose to be on the list. I noticed that the list didn’t include, in my opinion, a variety of vampires, and the fact that all, except one, of the vampires are from movies or tv shows that came out within the last ten years. Anyway, what I mean by the lack of variety is that four of the vampires came from two different sources. I find it biased like how this post is. The reason that I have a problem is that they didn’t include other vampires like Henry Fitzpatrick from Blood Ties, Mick St. John from Moonlight or any of the vampires from the Vampire Chronicles or The Lost Boys. I don’t think it’s right to put a relatively unknown vampire like Santinico Pandemonium or Dracula from Dracula 2000 on a list like 10 Vampires We Love when there are better qualified vampires out there.

Based on Anne Rice’s book of the same name, 1994’s Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicle

Based on Anne Rice’s book of the same name, 1994’s Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles develops the vampire mythology into a modern context to help further sex appeal of the iconic literary figure. Rice’s books about vampires were immensely popular, echoing the popularity the Twilight series has today. Thankfully the Rice pantheon of blood-suckers carries much more philosophical weight and consequence.

Neil Jordan, the Irish filmmaker behind The Crying Game, makes Interview with the Vampire come to life on the big screen with a star-studded cast, a touch of nudity and a nice amount of good old-fashioned blood. He doesn’t shy away from Rice’s work in any way, choosing to go full-bore into the crimson-soaked material with doses of sudden violence and continual sadness.

Louis (Brad Pitt) is a vampire. The movie introduces him as he sits down to talk to a reporter (Christian Slater) about his life. In an interview format, Louis explains how he became a vampire at the age of 24 in 1791 and how his relationship with his “maker,” Lestat (Tom Cruise), developed through the years. Louis initially rebels against what Lestat views as the necessary component of vampirism and refuses to kill humans, only to see his strength diminish as a result of choosing to eat only rats, chickens and poodles.

Years pass and animosity develops between Louis and Lestat, with Louis looking for more answers from his maker about what the life of a vampire is supposed to mean. It is interesting to hear vampires discuss concepts of purpose in light of their immortality and Jordan’s picture does well to prove the sadness and despair that living forever may bring. Lestat eventually provides Louis with a vampire “daughter” in Claudia (Kirsten Dunst) but she encounters many of the same troubles as Louis.

Louis and his quest for meaning are really at the core of Interview with the Vampire. His relationships come as a result of his searching for a suitable teacher or his thirst for blood. He also takes on the role of a father for Claudia, who struggles with the idea of never aging to be an older woman. All the while, Lestat remains as vicious and misunderstood as ever.

Jordan’s picture gets the whole vampire thing right. That is, of course, in large part due to Rice’s novel series. Her research and her creativity really drive the wheels of this picture, giving the characters depth missing from other more “Mormon” vampire stories. Rice grants her characters weakness, sadness, despair, and fear and Jordan scores major points in bringing all of those elements to the screen.

Cruise is probably at his career best here at Lestat. The makeup job is the beginning of the magic for his characterization, as the pale skin and veins make for a creepy, disturbing appearance. His attempts at a slight British accent, often seemingly forgotten by the actor, add a unique aura to the role as though Lestat isn’t quite sure where he’s come from or who he is.

Pitt is, unfortunately, the weak link in a film of powerful performances. His scenes working with the remarkably good Kirsten Dunst are often hollow and void of emotion and his attempts at conveying the sadness of his new reality come across bland and bare. Still, he manages to look the part of the innocent vampire archetype and that’s never really a bad thing.

In the end, Interview with the Vampire is probably the best of the modern gothic vampire flicks. It certainly makes something as bland and idiotic as Twilight look stupid and it tells the backstory and reality of vampirism well. It’s a good movie for expressing the sadness and gloom of the vampire lifestyle, informing us that living forever and needing blood to survive isn’t exactly the type of living that would make for good-looking, spiky-haired high schoolers.

6.9/10

I got to watch New Moon on the day after the premiere, and I’m telling you, the whole experience was nuts. As soon as I sat down to watch the movie, and the New Moon title screen came up, the rest of the audience started to scream. I thought to myself, jeez, what a bunch of crazy fan girls. Now keep in mind that while I like the books and the movies, I will forever be a Vampire Chronicles fan. Anyway, again, everybody screamed when Edward and Jacob came on, as well as when Jacob took off his shirt for the first time. Now, I can understand why everybody was screaming when Jacob took his shirt off for the first time, but why for Edward? I’m sorry, but I think that Edward is a pasty-ass pansy. Anyway, overall, I think that the movie was ok. There were quite a bit of funny parts but I think the movie is just a bunch of notable scenes from the book that was just pieced together and made into a movie. I gotta admit though, it’s very Chris Weitz. I say that because it reminded me of the movie that he did before, The Golden Compass. Both The Golden Compass and New Moon were edited very similarly. Anyway, don’t let my opinion deter you from watching the movie.

Elizabethtown (2005) A big time shoe designer, Drew Baylor (Orlando Bloom) fails on his biggest care

Elizabethtown (2005)

A big time shoe designer, Drew Baylor (Orlando Bloom) fails on his biggest career project costing his company almost a billion dollars. Before he gets comfortable with the fact surrounding his failure he receives a call…

His father just died.

I’ve always been a fan of Cameron Crowe, from Jerry Maguire to Almost Famous. I love the way the character’s initial quest of their chosen virtue falls (yes, downward) into a much larger significance underlying his totality as a PERSON. And the music is nothing short of memorable, iconic even. (Ever heard of the “boombox scene” from Say Anything?)

This movie isn’t looking any different.

The movie kicks off with a narrative from Drew, convinced that what he attained was far greater than just a simple failure. He refers to it as a fiasco. As if things couldn’t get any worse, from a person who committed most of his life to something that he ultimately failed at, he receives a call from his sister asking him to retrieve his father who reportedly died from a visit to his hometown, Elizabethtown, Kentucky. On a plane on the way there he meets a cheerfully, almost annoying, stewardess, Claire Colburn (Kirsten Dunst) whose positivity delays his confrontation with his mishaps.

Music plays a great role in Crowe’s movies, something that you would expect from the youngest ever rock critic of Rolling Stone. In this movie, he took the music and film artistic union tighter than he ever did before. Most people critics Orlando Blooms’ competency as an actor to play lead cast for this movie, which focuses greatly on the main character’s struggles and gradual realization of what to appreciate from life. But, if you ask me, it all works out “just” fine. And he even speaks a convincingly-American accent. Dunst has some moments that leave you wanting more from her portrayal as Claire. She takes over the scenes and is really cute about doing it.

The core attribute of a Cameron Crowe film is its desire to pull you back some place really close to comfort, some place safe. Like the scene where Drew silenced his nephews from an idea provided to her by Claire. The house kind of feels like a relative’s home on a holiday. He wants us to reminisce and be nostalgic from the vision he projects on the screen, and he wants us to dig even deeper by incorporating ingeniously selected music to go with it. Some says the soundtrack sometimes overpowers some scenes, but I won’t mind turning the volume up a notch on it provided I comprehend what the characters are saying. I hate critics who watch a Crowe movie and complain about the music that way. It’s there to create a moment. When you look back in a moment you share with someone, you don’t really recollect the point of your conversation, right? A good song just delivers. It brings back something incomprehensible sometime that music just explains it. That’s why you have background music on films. And the director realizes this more than anyone.

Some critics mention a questionable arc structure. Like the scene with the couple about to go on a wedding in Drew’s hotel should be cut from the reel. Come on? These guys just don’t get it. It was evident that from the start of the movie he keeps getting deferred or separated from dealing with the facts of his mishap. That’s the point why Dunst’ character was even introduced. He has to realize that there is still some beauty in life before he decides it’s all just shitting on his face. The mood that the cheerful people create in the hotel brings balance in his somehow unfortunate world. And when the narrative seems inconsistent, only present in the beginning and ending of the movie, it serves its purpose. He was interpreting from what just happened, dwelling on the negative in the beginning and starting to realize what Claire and her positivity showed her along the way. He can’t dive into it completely since he’s still contemplating his failure in his career.

I hate critics just sounding as such haters all the time. A negative inclination doesn’t necessarily project truth, man!

On that note, I must say Elizabethtown just hit a spot on my 10 most favorite list accompanied by other Cameron Crowe movies. “Moments” is what he’s good at and this one surely delivers. I’m still thinking of the movie with the best soundtrack and this one is a considerable nominee. But if you’re into Pop and Bass pounding beats to accompany memorable scenes, you won’t get it here. This story is told in a true Rock & Roll fashion with some sweet life lessons here and there. The performances are great (be prepared to shed a tear over Susan Sarandon’s tap dancing scene) and the mood can magically lift you up from a negative spot given the right set of mind.

“Trust me. Everybody is less mysterious than they think they are.” –Claire Colburn

It made me think. There’s a similarity between Armand/Marius and Bella/Edward relationships. The similarity is that Armand and Bella were both humans that were turned into vampires by their respective vampire lovers, Marius and Edward. I didn’t really realize that until I saw Armand’s reaction in that picture. I just thought that was interesting.

There’s always been a specific type of girl who I find the most fascinating in film. She’s the whimsical, dreamy sort of girl who probably doesn’t exist fully in real life – maybe only in the form of teenage girls who try their darnedest to recreate that kind of mysterious yet doe-eyed and innocent persona that can be so entrancing. Maybe what makes them so interesting is the fact that they’re walking contradictions. They’re wild yet sweet, somewhat shallow on the surface yet genuinely multi-dimensional, beautiful yet not conventionally so, and they bring out the life in others when they might feel dead inside themselves. I don’t recall ever meeting anyone who quite lived up to that image that you see on the screen. Someone (Nathan Rabin) did, however, coin these enigmatic and quirky cinematic females with their very own title – “Manic Pixie Dream Girls” or MPDGs for short. Some may find characters like this to be vapid or think that they feed into the stereotypical weak, ultra-feminine characters that inadvertently support male dominance in film – but I disagree. If anything, I think the men need them more than the other way around.

While there are a few variations of MPDGs, something they always possess is an effortless and unique style. Even if they dress simple and mundane, their fashion is always different than any of the other girls in their given film, even if that sometimes means being understated and not as typically wow inducing as the rest. MPDGs are leading ladies who are the antithesis of your garden variety heroine.

Since I’m so fascinated with these kind of characters, I thought it might be fun to point out a few favorites with a focus on their varying styles.

Kate Winslet as Clementine Kruczynski in Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind. Kirsten Dunst in Elizabethtown may have been the inspiration for the term, but I think think of a better fit as a MPDG than Clementine. Everything about her is eccentric and quirky – from her constant hair color changes to her mood swings to her famous line, “I’m not a concept. Too many guys think I’m a concept or I complete them or I’m going to make them alive, but I’m just a fucked up girl who is looking for my own peace of mind. Don’t assign me yours.”

Wanna look like Clem? Well, you could dye your hair blue or bright red like Kate’s in the film, but if you’re not up for that much of a plunge, you could opt for less drastic options. Her styling was a diverse mix of sloppily sophisticated and a thirteen year old deeply immersed in her “look at me, I’m a rebel” stage. For the former, you could pair a little black dress with funky jewelry, an eccentric, patterned scarf, or brightly colored Doc Martens. And the latter? Easy, easy, easy. Get some funky or ironic t-shirt, pair it with some camo pants, converses, and a hoodie and ta-da! You’re a Clem lookalike. Not so fashionable, but that’s not what you’re aiming for. The most important aspect of creating this MPDG style is the way you carry yourself and your attitude. It’s what tips the scales from mall rat to point of interest.

Hannah Murray as Cassie Ainsworth on Skins. Cassie is without a doubt, the ultimate television MPDG. I mean, really, downing pills with alcohol in a tiny toy gun? Bouncing around between clinics and institutions? While she’s a slightly darker and more conflicted MPDG, she still possesses the same wonderment. Every MPDG has some sort of defining quote or catch-phrase. For Cassie, it would undoubtedly be her infamous, “Oh, wow… lovely!” with her wide eyes and endearing over-bite. Though Sid is entirely hung up on Michelle, Cassie is still able to entrance him enough to finally realize she’s the girl for him. Only a MPDG can be completely messed up, yet still desirable at the same time.

Cassie’s style simultaneously makes sense, but then… doesn’t. It’s a mix of early 90’s grunge with baby-doll dresses and white Kurt Cobain sunglasses, anime character with eccentric jewelry and patterns, and things that are trendy. Probably the coolest aspect of Cassie’s style is that Hannah Murray was allowed to use things from her own wardrobe for the character. Achieving Cassie’s look requires the right eye for mixing articles of clothing and patterns that don’t necessarily seem like they’d mesh well together, but creates an amazing final product. Cassie wore a lot of really whimsical, pale colored mini-dresses with knee socks and flat oxfords and Mary Jane’s. You could also pair a cute t-shirt with a long pleated skirt and really random jewelry. Cassie also wore a lot of sequin detailed pieces, mixed with less flashy thinks like structured blazers with shoulder pads and flat canvas shoes.

Zooey Deschanel as Harriet (Happy) Lolly. Okay, let me tell ya, it was difficult choosing which of Zooey’s characters as her ultimate MPDG. Summer in 500 Days of Summer would have been the obvious choice, but lots of people have already gone that route. Not only that, I can think of a zillion other roles of hers that fit off the top of my head (The Go Getter, Yes Man, Flakes, Manic, her character on Weeds… etc.). I chose Gigantic despite it being an incredibly dull and unusual (unpleasantly so) film because of Happy’s clothing and the fact that her off-beat personality is about the only interesting part of the movie.

The outfits that Happy wore were slightly more subdued than those of the other MPDGs I’ve mentioned. Nothing is really all that out of left field except maybe the adorable kimono she wore lounging around her father’s house. Throw on a similar one or any silk robe and some heels while hanging around the house and feel like you’re a movie star or model waiting to get your hair and make-up done for some glamorous photoshoot. Happy also wore a lot of dark, rich colors like burgundy and navy blue, so any warm, fall colored articles of clothing will get the vibe going for you. Some of her outfits had a 70’s vibe to them – high-waisted jeans, gold chain belt, soft ruffled tank tops, fur (faux, please! >:|) lined blazers. In Happy’s case, what upped her MPDG status is how aloof she was. There was something to her character’s quirkiness, but the film failed to go into who she really was. She existed merely as an interesting focal point in an otherwise hum-drum story.

Natalie Portman as Sam in Garden State, Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golighty in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Mischa Barton as Marissa Cooper on The OC (I’ve been lusting over that dress she wore since 2003), The Lisbon Sisters from The Virgin Suicides, Kate Hudson as Penny Lane in Almost Famous, and Helena Bonham Carter as Marla Singer in Fight Club.

Anyway reports from 3Yen.com are saying she was rocking these cosplay duds in Akihabara for a video shoot directed by McG (the dude who directed Terminator Salvation). The video is for an exhibition which will take place at the Tate Modern in London later this year.

4. Naomi Watts from King Kong

Is Naomi Watts a lovely lady? Yes but her lust for large blacks apes upsets my old world values.

3. Trinity from the Matirx

If I were Neo I would have had a lets just be friends talk with Trinity right off the bat.

2. That dude that taught Keanu Reeves to surf in Point Break

Not Patrick Swazey the nine year old with the annoying voice. She is horrible. Keanu must not like the girls in his movies to be prettier than him.

1. Kirsten Dunst from Spider-Man

She may have a nice body but she has the same bone structure in her face as Bill Burr one of my favorite comedians.

my latest inspiration…

“Kirtsten Dunst portrays the ill-fated child princess who married France’s young and indifferent King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman). Feeling Isolated in a royal court rife with scandal and intrigue. Marie Antoinette defied both royalty and commoner by living like a rockstar, which served only to seal her fate.”

“Marie Antoinette is an electrifying yet intimate re-telling of the turbulant life of history’s favorite villainess.”

Last night I watched Marie Antoinette directed by Academy Award Winner Sofia Coppola (2003/Best Writing/Lost In Translation)… My friend Hannah raved about this movie in college. I AM OBSESSED WITH THE STYLING!!!! so cool – everything is so pretty, her clothes are decadent and look like cupcakes, Versailles is unreal. Hmm… what else? The soundtrack is great – my favorite it the scene by the Strokes! Watch the trailer – it does a great job of highlighting the movie.

Marie Antoinette (2006) – loved it!

Synopsis: Oscar® winner Sofia Coppola brings to the screen a fresh interpretation of the life of France’s legendary teenage queen MARIE ANTOINETTE. Betrothed to King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman), the naïve Marie Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) at the age of 14, she is thrown into the opulent French court which is steeped in conspiracy and scandal. Alone, without guidance, and adrift in a dangerous world, the young Marie Antoinette rebels against the isolated atmosphere at Versailles and, in the process, becomes France’s most misunderstood monarch. Kirsten Dunst stars as the youthful princess whose fateful life became the stuff of myth and legend. The story begins when 14-year-old Marie Antoinette is whisked away from her family and friends in Vienna, stripped of all her possessions and deposited in the sophisticated and decadent world of Versailles, the lavish royal court near Paris. Marie Antoinette is merely a pawn in an arranged marriage meant to solidify the harmony between two nations. Her teenage husband, the Dauphin Louis (Jason Schwartzman), is heir to the French throne. But Marie Antoinette is ill prepared to be the kind of ruler for whom the French populace yearns. Beneath her finery, she’s a sheltered, frightened and confused young woman, surrounded by vicious detractors, insincere flatterers, puppet masters and gossips….© Columbia Pictures (see movie for more)

Marie Antoinette was an archduchess of Austria, born in 1755. She became the Dauphin of France at fourteen years old when she married Louis Auguste. Marie Antoinette assumed the position of Queen of France and Navarre when her husband, Louis XVI, took the French throne in 1774.

During their regime & the French Revolution, reffered to as the “reign of terror”, Louis the XVI was dethroned. Marie Antoinette was executed for disloyalty in 1793, when she was only 38.

Flying home for the Thanksgiving holiday, I had to prevent myself from taking anything contemporary art-related with me on the plane because I knew that even if I told myself that reading Discipline and Punish was for pleasure, I would inevitably start thinking about my day job.

Instead, I picked up some easy reading, a magazine and a book that was turned into a movie. Maybe you’ve heard of it. The movie was directed by Sofia Coppola. No, not Lost in Translation – was that even a book? This one had Kirsten Dunst in it. No, not Marie Antoinette. Why would I have wanted to watch that and no, that wasn’t based on a book. I understand that it was based loosely on the life of the queen of France, but that’s not a book. That’s history of some sort and even though I understand that there are history books, I’m saying that I read a book over Thanksgiving that was based on a novel. A novel of popular literature. “How is it popular literature if I haven’t read it?” OMG, how old are you? Oh, nevermind, you’re making me all too aware of my age. Your parents probably didn’t allow you to see the movie when it came out. You don’t even know what cellulite feels like on your still skinny thighs. I’m gonna hang out with Kirsten Dunst right now so that we can go feel old together.
