Earlier this month, Japanese rockabilly band KISHIDAN was introduced as the guest musical act at NEIGHBORHOOD’s 15th anniversary. Putting on a high-energy performance with their trademark hair and dancing, the band has subsequently teamed up with NEIGHBORHOOD on a 15th anniversary t-shirt which will release on December 5th, 2009 at select NEIGHBORHOOD retailers.

What are funny music video?

It’s really subjective to say what funny means. I surfed the web a little, and I saw forum posts quoting The Foo Fighters – “Learn to Fly” and Blink 182 – “The Rock Show” as funny. After watching them off the tube, I would say that they did nothing to me.

So digging deep into my memory, I thought of two of the weirdest band I had fond memories of. Weird in the funny way, of course.

1. The Village People

The 70s is a haven for oddities in the music industry. Upbeat music in disco or funky style, coupled by flamboyant costumes and oft-exaggerated dance moves, produced some interesting bands like Earth, Wind and Fire, ABBA, Bee Gees and Tower of Power. But none was as weird and funny as The Village People.

The Village People, formed in the late 70s, top the other bands at the time with their performances in non-flamboyant clothes, and music of insignificance. The Village People, is a brainchild of Jacques Morali, putting together a group of 20-odd year old, scuffy looking guys, dressing up as fixed persona. Although it is a big challenge to know the specific individual in the group, ask anyone who could recall the awesome group and they will laugh about the black guy, the police officer, the construction worker, the indian chief and the cowboy in the group.

Here’s one of the Village People more memorable song, Macho Man. It is hilarious just seeing the guys standing around posing and dancing awful dance step to the music.

2. 氣志團 (Kishidan)

Another weird band Iam fond of, comes from Japan. Unlike the Village People, Kishidan does not  have a fixed genre of music.

Kishidan, formed in 1996, recreate the bad school-boys image, with each member wearing a winter long-coat and exaggerated retro hairstyle. Their images are constructed with the comedic influence of 応援団 (ouendan) in mind, where a group of scruffy looking delinquents are usually seen in sports game to provide support and rally crowds. Recreating images may be funny in a way. But they are a cut above the rest in terms of weirdness, with their music, which can’t be fixated into one genre; the band funny personalities, in their often comedic cameo appearances on television programmes; and interesting story-lines seen in their music video.

Here’s a funny music video from Kishidan, titled “Kira Kira!”. The lyrics of the song is nothing to write home about, but the story that was told within the song is plain hilarious.

So what makes anything funny?

Generally there are some tried and tested methods in making something funny. Most comedic situations and jokes usually fall within four categories:

1. Out-of-Context Portrayal

The easiest way to create a comedic situation is portraying a situation where the subject is out-of-place. E.g. a traditional oriental guy behaving in his normal behaviour in another country with totally different language, beliefs and culture.

In a way, the Village People fall into this category of portrayal as well, since the only thing that is comedic to the band is that the assortment of persona coming together is just comedic in the songs they are singing.

2. Punchlines

The other way to create a comedic situation is achieved by characters sprouting out funny lines or contents. This is the most commonly seen technique used in stand-up comedy, where the comedian build up an ordinary story, and finally ending with one punch-line to bring in the laughter.

3. Satires and Spoofs

The third way for a comedic situation is the usage of satire or spoof. Satires are basically a recreation of known event, stories or shows, and incorporating some twists within. Numerous comedic shows gain their successes solely through satire, like French & Saunders and the Onion.

“Weird Al” Yankovic is an expert using this method for his songs as well, changing lines of well-known pop songs, e.g. “Eat It” (using Michael Jackson’s song “Beat it”) and “Fat” (using MJ’s “Bad”).

4. Getting Personal

The last way to portray a comedic situation is getting personal. To an onlooker, it is somehow funny when a person is portraying some form of emotions, e.g. embarassment, on the verge of blowing up, frustrations etc. This is also the only reason why shows like Jerry Springer is even remotely comedic. And probably the indirect reason why vulgarity is sneaking into comedies, much to my displease.

To me, Foo Fighters – Learn to Fly might be funny, since dressing up as different characters do get some laughter. However, since those characters are pretty logical to appear within the situation, it just doesn’t seen all that hilarious to me. Blink182 – Rock Show is probably comedic in terms of visual effects, using a fisheye lens to warp the way they band look. However, as with any techniques, it might be funny initially, but gets old very quickly.

Et j’étais sur la route, toute la sainte journée…

C’était en allant à la coopérative, un peu après ces pluies antédiluviennes. On nous avait recommandé les légumes et la pêche fraiche du matin. Moi, j’étais un rien bougon, je décuvais de la veille, et la perspective d’aller faire le “marché”, m’enchantait moyennement. Je décidais de jouer les rebelles dans la voiture, alternant Motörhead et Munk. “Live Fast, Die Old”. Au fond, l’un et l’autre ça allait forcément de pair.

A défaut de brioche, je me rabattu sur les donuts de la chaine américaine Mister Donuts, plus connu sous le sobriquet raccourci de MisDo’. Et dans cette propension au bon goût, je me permettais d’accompagner le tout au Melon Soda.

Reste que j’étais content, j’avais trouvé un polar nerveux avec Henry Silva au Tsutaya, et tant qu’à faire, je doublais la mise avec un obscur alter ego nippon. J’ai même eu le temps de cambrioler le buraliste et prendre la pose pour Lucia, histoire de dévoiler la trombine de Clarence, en mode “fanfaron Corse” !

Kishidan guitarist Hitomi Saionji has started a solo project. The group, named “Tommy and the Bonjaskys”, are going to release their debut mini album on November 5th, effectively proving that Kishidan broke up and no one’s willing to say anything about it.
