I’m known to say, “Every girl deserves a little sparkle.”  Well I also believe that every cabinet needs its jewelry too.  Most cabinets can benefit from the addition of pulls and knobs, helping to complete the overall effect.  There are also areas that call for extra special hardware.  These are some of the luxuries you can find for your cabinets.

Schaub & Co - Estate Dover Tiger Penshell with Yellow Mother of Pearl

Schaub & Company Symphony series plays with semi-precious stones that make me think of my grandmother’s jewelry.  Lucky for them, I like antique jewelry.  These pieces have intricacy and would be beautful on cabinetry in a woman’s dressing area.

Sherle Wagner - Molecule Knob

This one is just pure fun!  I must admit, I still hold a girlish fascination with bubbles. This one speaks to me, but it is also has a contemporary feel to it.

Atlas Homewares - Primitive Collection

Atlas Homewares has a great line of hardware that has a wonderful variety to it.  This piece has an animal print feel, but is still extremely masculine in its design.

Amerock - Revitalize Pull

With the popularity of brands such as Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel and Restoration Hardware.  This cabinet pull from Amerock, would blend seamlessly.  The styling is simple and yet the rib detail keeps it from being boring.  I especially like the depth, enabling easy use for people with larger hands.

Spectra Decor, Variation Series - Eco-resin & Lead-free Pewter

Having a green kitchen, gets easier by each day.  The line from Spectra Decor is made using Eco-Resin and Lead-free Pewter.  I especially love the airy graphic quality to the variation series.

Sherle Wagner - Aurora

I saved the best one for last.  This one is my favorite of all that I have here for you.  It is simply beautiful in its design and styling.  The added benefit is the quality of Sherle Wagner hardware last.  This is one of those designs that will transcend the years and the trends.

With the kitchen being one of the most used rooms in the home, it is no wonder that we talk so much about it.  The purposes of the kitchen transcend meal prep and cooking to a gathering and entertaining area where guests and family naturally gather.  Outside of work zones and work triangles, there are LUXURIES that need to be built in to the modern kitchen.  One such luxury is the entertainment/bar sink.  This sink is in addition to the main sink.  Usually 16″ or smaller, this sink serves as an station to wash veggies, fill pots or even chill beverages.  There is even the added benefit of freeing up the main sink for clean up. Many of the sinks available come or have available accessories such as cutting boards and basin racks.  These accessories serve to give you the most use of your sink and help to protect the sink finish.

The Poise (Kohler), shown here in the mirror finish is modern luxury at its finest. The sink comes with a bamboo cutting board and bottom basin rack, but that's not the most stunning feature. This sink also features SilentShield, a technology that dampens the sounds created by disposals, dishwashers and running water.

This Luna sink from Native Trails as a curved design which brings fun to the entertainment sink. This sink, also available in a Nickel finish would work in a transitional or contemporary kitchen design.

This Lager Sink from the Hammerwerks series would shine in any rustic kitchen design.

Two-tone kitchens seem to be the hot new kitchen design trend.  We’ve installed 5 custom kitchens with two-tone finishes in the past six months- a noticeable increase over last year.

The top trend in two tone kitchens is a different stained or painted island that coordinates with the wall and base cabinetry.  Many clients have opted for distressed finishes on the island.  To take the two-tone look further, some even use a different granite color on the island as well.

Above is a better view of the two different granites used in the kitchen.  You can also see how the tile work behind the cooktop ties in with the black distressed finish of the island.

The kitchen above uses a combination of a painted finish and a stained finish.  The kitchen cabinets are solid maple, painted white.  The island is a solid cherry wood with a mahogany stain, hand-mixed by our finisher.  This client used the same granite color throughout the kitchen to tie the whole look together.   

A two-tone kitchen is a unique  and workable look for any kitchen.

The kitchen in Mohnton, PA is nearing completion. It should be all done except for the crown moulding next week. Pics will be posted.

One thing always leads to another. Originally we were just going to put up some more cabinets in the kitchen and redo the backsplash. The previous owners were in the midst of a total remodel of this house and were a little, uh… off shall we say, in their calculations among other things. So there weren’t enough cabinets and the backsplash they’d done was a mess and had to be redone. But then… there’s always a but then isn’t there?… we got into it and found they’d wired the stove in wrong which was very dangerous and we’re lucky there wasn’t a fire, or they were anyway. So then we decided that taking out half the wall between the kitchen and living room would open it up tons, plus we probably wouldn’t have to buy any more cabinets, or at least not as many. This meant we would also take out all the lowers and redo the countertops, which were a mess we’d originally thought we’d try and salvage. Because of this decision we also had to get a new stove since the one that was in there, though really great, was too tall for a bar type situation…. hence our shopping yesterday at used appliance places in Portland. And let me tell you, we didn’t think we’d be able to find a used slide in flat top electric downdraft range, but we did. Amazing. I recommend this place highly… uh, it’s called… uh wait… we were just there yesterday… hmmm… oh yeah… Appliance City. Great place. We’ll go back (as long as we can remember what it’s called… hardy har har). After all, we have to get a washer and dryer. Anyway… so the old really decent range is going into our other rental, which I’m sure our renter will like as the one she has was probably made before the dawn of time. And we are on our way to getting the kitchen back together. Woo Hoo. Well… not yet, but we will be. And that is how one thing leads to another. Whew…

Complete Renovation

The start this job took the the team awhile, we were contact by the owners when they where outside of the country, the planing took a couple of months and hundreds of e-mails. Mrs McGee was in tears first time she saw the kitchen, thanks again to the whole team involved. Lets wait for the next challenge.

I design kitchens for a living, but what about the kitchen design where I live?? A few years ago I bought a loft in Downtown Atlanta in an area known as Castleberry Hill. It is the art mecca of Atlanta with an Art Gallery around every corner! I let the art theme of the neighborhood be my inspiration for this contemporary kitchen creation.

The kitchen my loft came with needed some SERIOUS work!

This is NOT the NKBA recommended method for removing cabinets. But since this is my kitchen, I wanted to experience how kitchens were remodeled before power tools were invented…

Kitchen remodeling isn’t quite like an artist having a blank canvas, it more like someone else dripping paint on your canvas and then you having to finish the painting and make it a masterpiece. When designing a kitchen remodel, you often have to measure around appliances and plan designs without knowing exactly what’s inside your walls. If you are changing the structure of your kitchen it is not only a good idea to hire experienced professionals, but you should also at least pull off the sheetrock and see what surprises are lurking in your walls that may affect the final outcome.

I found some unexpected water pipes for the loft above mine that I had to incorporate into my design.

I actually designed and installed this backsplash myself by out of 1″ travertine tiles with 1″ glass tile accents

These countertops ROCK! Literally! I used Stellar Night from Silestone which is engineered quartz with little chips of mirror in them. It is harder than granite, NEVER has to be sealed, and has micro-ban built right in! You should see the way all TWENTY TWO lights in the kitchen reflect off them at night!

This kitchen design move is REALLY popular in high end designs these days, secret cabinet doors into pantries and other rooms in the house is a great way to impress your friends and potential home buyers! From the looks of my laundry basket…perhaps I forget I have a laundry room a little too often

Knocking out these walls made such a big difference in this space! And who couldn’t justify a NEW TV to go with their NEW kitchen view!

The accessories available in today’s cabinetry are great! I couldn’t live without my integrated trash cans! This is a 9″ spice pullout, DO NOT buy a 3″ spice pullout! Everyone and their brother comes to me wanting to buy the 3″ versions they see in magazines but those are pretty much the most useless things every invented because you can’t really fit anything on them…not all spice bottles are created equal!
