Nissan India is planning to change its import strategy for the X-Trail and Teana as it intends to bring down costs and boost sales. The vehicles which are CBUs attract high import duties and thus the company is planning to switch to completely knocked down kits (CKDs). If implemented we can expect to see significant price reduction on the X-trail and Teana, close to a tune of Rs. 5 lakhs. The company is under way of setting up 55 more dealerships before they launch their small car in the country.

Season’s greetings and happy holidays to you all! I’ve scheduled this post today as, as

Season’s greetings and happy holidays to you all!

I’ve scheduled this post today as, as much as I enjoy blogging, I suspect I’ll be otherwise engaged!

At such a busy time of year I thought I’d share a few examples of super-speedy techniques which you can use to achieve interesting effects in those moments of crafting time you grab in between everything else! While the examples all feature beads, buttons and haberdashery trimmings … my alternative methodas meant I didn’t have to find the time and concentration to sit and sew each of them on. And, at this time of year, that leaves more time for eating, drinking and being merry!

Below is a paper-bag album I created this winter into which I incorporated a boookmark.

Onto a length of cotton cord I threaded buttons, beads and word-beads, [all from the 'Wedding Night' white mixed media and paper crafts kit]. Here’s a close-up where you can see how I threaded the cord through both holes in the button – to prevent everything from sliding up and down:

Another item from the white kit was this length of haberdashery trimming which I had anticipated holding it in place with a few drops of glue before fixing it in place ‘properly’ by sewing it by hand.

That is, until I realised that my ’go to’, highly useful, Hi-Tack: Fast Tack glue held it in place without requiring any additional help! Don’t you lov eit when you hit upon a near-perfect crafting resource like that? It’s the same glue I’ve used to glue the lace onto the album pages in the 1st photo above and also to add details to my Skinny Santa blog project here.

Finally, a project you might remember from earlier on in the year:

Here, using items from the ‘Pink Parts’ Mixed Media Color Kit , I decorated the three bookrings from on of my mini-books. It’s as simple as selecting your favourite beads, bits and goodies from the packet …and sliding them on. Very, very little effort was required on my behalf to create an intesting effect that people have often commented on. The best part about it is that, when you buy more kits, and uncover more plastic / vintage treasure, you can easily slide your new favourites onto the existing rings.

Currently, both the pink and the white kit is available to buy either on its own or as a part of two specially priced festive kits. The pink kit has been mixed with the green to form the Funky Fa La La kit and the red and white mingle together in the Candy Cane kit. As a Christmas treat – the combined kits are on sale at a lower price than if you bought them separately.

So, next time you get a minute to yourself [in between all the gift-giving, soppy-old-films-on-TV-watching and more-food-than-you'd-usually-eat-in-a-week eating] then see where the no-sew techniques take you.

Whatever you’re doing today / this week … have a great time. See you soon.

Julie

Okay, gang, last one for me. The white walls of our new home finally drove me insane and I had the idea to put up stuff with masking tape. First with the paper garland HERE and now with these.

I got the tree images from Karenswhimsy HERE and printed them out.

Then I cut off the covers of some of our old books. Then I made this.

I got a vintage ad from the Lush Kit, tore off some papers from the old encylopedia, adhered some of our recent photos, and then used bits and pieces from the Green Color Kit.

I don’t know about you but counting down to the holidays just flew by for me and, wouldn’t you know it, it’s Christmas Eve tonight!

Here’s wishing you and your loved ones a blessed, merry, peaceful Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

*hugs*

Another month, another Gutter Girlz challenge. This time, “I’m just fine”, It only hurts when I’m breathing by Shania Twain and mesh/gauze. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about Gutter Girlz that other challenge blogs don’t have. I’ve tried several, but GG is the only one I keep up with, and the only one I’m really looking forward to every month. If it were up to me, I’d be on their design team forever!

This time, I’ve scrapbooked about my in-laws. They live 20 minutes by car from here, but have only visited us twice since we got our own place 8 months ago. Once we invited them, they said they’d come, and just never showed up. The first time they were here, there was nothing positive to say about our apartment – it was too small, too this, too that. When they were here last, we had decorated for Xmas. It was not commented on once. Nothing about how nice it looked. Nothing. Our apartment is still too small. I’ve always known they don’t approve of me as their son’s wie. “He could do better” – they were in an outrage when continued studying after my BA (I could just go straight to teaching instead), and Art- and Cultural sciences – what’cha gonna do with that?! They want him to have a docile wife, who cooks and cleans. I’m not that wife. The papers have been chosen very specifically for this challenge. The magazine paper is from Amanda Johnson, as is the buttons. Other papers from Studio Calico’s new line “Home Front” and Cosmo Cricket and October Afternoon – they fit the theme. The journaling card is also Studio Calico’s “Home Front”, and it’s the “I do” journaling card.

I couldn’t stand the empty white walls of our new home. And I didn’t want to commit to nailing anything on it yet. So, masking tape and this super simple project saved the day.

My son Matt definitely knows his mom is a scrapbooker and volunteered to pose. Yep, even the pose (with toy accessory) was his idea.

All you need for this project are your tons of vintage goodness, patterned paper and whatever papers you’d like to use, crochet string and adhesive. Cut the circles and sandwich the string in the middle of two circles.

P.S. Our very own Amy Wing is going through some stuff right now and, if you can, kindly send some warm thoughts, positive vibes and prayers her way. Thanks!

Hello lovelies. Just a quick one!
The boys at Clubline have asked me to cast a knowing eye over the fashion stakes in the football jersey department. What with the World Cup thing creeping up on us, our screens will soon swamped by sweaty men in performance fabrics and, like you, I’m agog at the prospect!

Firstly, what a disappointment the England kit is. They’ve just taken an old polo shirt and logoed it up a bit. Reminds me of the uniform we had to wear at junior school. And white – Nightmare! Even if you’re not one of the dirty boys who likes to roll around in the mud, you’ll be ploughing through absolute packets of vanish.

The Italians always manage to pull it off, in my experience. There’s no sight like a swarthy Neapolitan, stealthily gliding round the back, swathed in a blue Puma soccer shirt. I love Puma football kits; so innovative, so cutting edge, so Gaga.

I can’t leave you without mentioning those lovely boys who do the swoosh thingy. Those Nike football kits are to die for. And you can bet your last pair of designer knickers that there’ll be oodles of teams sporting Nike kits at the World Cup. I wonder if anyone will have that Pin-Stripe number – I love it in black and gold! Black is the new black.

Now I’ve got rush, so we’ll keep this short (I’m off to my Turkish baths for a quick facial). Don’t worry, I’ll be keeping an eye on the pitch to see if anything pops up and makes me squeal with delight. Ta-ta for now.

Yesterday, I headed up Centennial Road along Strawberry Canyon to take some more lichen and moss photographs. As I was walking along the trail by the road, I looked down in into the canyon and saw something seemed out of place on the big branch of a fallen tree.

Here’s what I saw:

At first, I couldn’t tell what kind of animal might be sleeping there. It certainly was a fairly large animal, but all I could see was a ball of fur. So, I called out, and it lifted up its head to listen. It was a gray fox!

I was really excited! This was my first fox sighting since I had moved West, and my first large predator sighting in the Berkeley Hills. In the East, the red fox is dominant, and I had seen a number of those in my time there, but never a gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus). The fox never stood up so I could see more of it, but here’s a close-up of it looking up when I made a noise:

Not a red fox

This beautiful animal is easily distinguishable from the red fox, which is indeed quite reddish and has those characteristic “black stockings” on its feet.

A tree-climbing fox!

One of the things that surprised me about the gray fox was how high in the fallen tree it was, and how inaccessible it was. How the heck did it get up there? When I did some research, I came upon this fact at Wikipedia:

“The gray fox’s ability to climb trees is shared only with the Asian raccoon dog among canids. Its strong, hooked claws allow it to scramble up trees to escape predators such as the domestic dog or the coyote, or to reach tree-bound or arboreal food sources. It descends primarily by jumping from branch to branch, or by descending slowly backwards as a house cat.”

So, that explained it! The gray fox is a tree climber! I had no idea any fox could climb a tree. I watched the fox for about 10 minutes, and it seemed hunkered down for a good sleep. (The gray fox is mainly nocturnal though it’s also out at dawn or dusk.)

A Berkeley mountain-man hippie

As I was watching the fox, along came a fellow which I could only describe as a Berkeley “character.” He was dressed like a mountain-man hippie, with long hair in a pony tail, and a big beard. As he approached, I asked him if he wanted to see a fox, and of course, he said yes. (I now wished I’d taken his picture, as you’ll soon understand.)

As he admired the fox, he told me about encounters he’d had with foxes and how much he admired them. Then he said, “You want to hear a really great fox story? It’s a true one; it happened to an old girlfriend of mine.”

Sat down like he was an old friend and went on to tell his remarkable story. The man was clearly a natural-born storyteller, but you know, the story and the way he told it had the ring of truth. As best as I can remember, here’s what he said:

A true story about a wise mother fox

“It happened in Colorado, up in the mountains where my girlfriend lived. One day she went out to her back porch, and she saw a gray fox standing, holding up a hurt leg. The fox didn’t run away when she saw it, even though it was close, but sat there, expectant like.”

“After the fox and my girlfriend sized each other up for a while, the fox then stood up, and turned to limp away. But it stopped and looked over its shoulder as if to say, ‘Well, are you coming?’

“So, my girl friend got her coat, and followed. The foxes leg was badly hurt, but it could still outpace my girl friend through the scrub brush. But each time she fell behind the fox would stop and patiently wait for her to catch up. As soon as she caught up, the fox moved on.”

A surprise in the woods

“To her surprise, the fox led her directly to a litter of fox kits, three of them. It was a mother fox, and the wounded fox had led her right to her den. The fox sat down at some distance, and watched, as if to say, ‘Well, there they are! I’m hurt and I want you to take them back with you and take care of them.’”

“The fox watched intently while my girl friend gathered up the kits and then followed her back to house. My girlfriend made a place for them near her house, where they’d be safe. The mother fox seemed satisfied, and then again, she looked at my girlfriend and seemed to say, “Well, can’t you see that they’re hungry? I haven’t been able hunt.”

“My girlfriend went inside and got some milk, which she gave to the pups. And then she got some meat, and threw it to the mother, who gobbled it down. After a while, the mother fox came over to the kits, and with a sigh, lay down with them.”

A refuge for a wounded mother fox

“And that’s the way it went. For 3 months, my girlfriend fed the fox while its leg mended, and soon, the mother was strong enough to give her own milk again. My girlfriend played with the kits everyday, and the mother never minded, although she always kept her distance.”

“The thee kits grew up fast, got teeth, and started to forage around themselves, though they always welcomed food from my girlfriend. And then one day, it was clear that the mother fox was going to leave. Although she trusted my girlfriend, she was obviously nervous being near humans.”

“One morning, my girlfriend came out, and the mother and kits were gone. She cried, and really missed them, but she knew that the wise mother had done the right thing.”

A final goodbye and thank-you

“Months later, in the late fall, with the first early snow, my girlfriend was out hiking, and suddenly, she saw a fox. Was it her fox? She stopped, and watched as the fox came to her—with a slight limp! It was the mother fox! The fox came very close, and for a long time, she just sat there and looked into my girlfriend’s eyes, which were filled with tears. She said she felt the fox was thanking her. And then, the fox turned tail, and trotted off, with the slight limp from the old injury.”

“My girlfriend never saw the mother fox again, but did see other foxes from time to time, and she wondered if any of them were the kits grown up. Actually, she was glad the kits had ‘gone wild’ and were wary of humans. That was the safest thing for them so near to humans with guns. But to this day, she has a special love for foxes, and often thinks of the wise mother fox who came to her for help.”

“And that, my friend, is a true story. There’s more to animals than meets the eyes, eh?”

I agreed that indeed there is, and said good-bye to my mountain-man hippie storyteller. I watched him lumber off, amazed at how often people can amaze you with their hidden depths. Then, I turned and watched the gray fox sleeping for a while longer, thinking about the wise injured mother fox.

From all I know about animals, and from my own experiences with wounded animals over the years, I bet it happened just as my storyteller said. With that happy thought, and with a big love for my storyteller, for that sleeping fox, and for all the creatures in the canyon, I headed up the trail and into the hills.

What do I have against BOBs (bail out bags)? Nothing at all! Heck, I keep one ready to go just in ca

What do I have against BOBs (bail out bags)? Nothing at all! Heck, I keep one ready to go just in case. It’s just when I see people posting all over the internet, saying how great their BOB is and other people agreeing; well, it’s just sickening!

I don’t think people understand the purpose of a BOB. Rather, you can’t have a BOB of all BOBs! You see people trying to prepare for everything and in the end they just lack in important ideals of a BOB.

First of all for those who don’t know, a BOB (or bail out bag/bug out bag whatever) is essentially a quick access kit. If something happens, you can grab the bag readily and run to do whatever it is you have to do. Most think a BOB is a survival kit. Maybe in some sense it is but really you can’t just label is as that.

You see people setting up BOBs for wilderness survival. Reasonable enough if you live somewhere with a lot of “wilderness” around you I guess. But you also see those that live in big cities (like New York City) where a wilderness BOB would be useless in an urban environment. That’s why people have to understand that BOBs depend on the situation. There’s no magic list of items that you should keep in a BOB to make you able to survive everything or everywhere. If you live in the countryside then have a wilderness BOB (with appropriate clothing of course). If you live in a big metropolitan city, you can cut out stuff like a huge fire kit or fishing kit. You see people in cities trying to fish with whole fishing set ups and not catching a single fish. Good luck with just your line and hook. Don’t give me that “well I can use it for other stuff too” bullshit. In that case, there’s better equipment you can get. You shouldn’t be using your BOB every week so it’s okay to have some more expensive or specialized equipment in it. And if you are using your BOB every week that either means you should really be moving from the hellhole you live in or what you think is really isn’t a BOB.

One of the things that annoy me about BOBs is all the useless crap you see them put in it. Once again it’s because they’re trying to cover all possible situations. Hard candies are often recommended to have in a BOB. Are you serious? Everyone is like “Oh you should throw in some hard candies. It’s for a quick burst of energy. My personal favorite is jolly ranchers.” Those people are retarded. What kind of energy will a few hard candies give you? Close to nothing. You can imagine the space each jolly rancher will take up. You know what I would want to take that space in place of 2-4 jolly ranchers? 2-4 9mm bullets! Hell of a lot more valuable and useful in a BOB if you ask me (specifically if you have a rifle or pistol that uses it). Okay, maybe you don’t have a gun in your BOB, or you just want to have food. I would recommend the emergency ration bars. Each block takes up the space of a few hard candies but will give you a hell of a lot more energy in the form of calories than the candy. Candy energy is just sugar which your body will burn up in a matter of minutes. What do I carry over food energy? Medication! I don’t agree with daily abuse of drugs but hell if the shit hits the fan then its all fair game. In the place of ONE hard candy I could carry several caffeine pills. It’ll keep me alert much longer than the sugar in a jolly rancher. You could even go as far as keeping some Ritalin in your bag or Modafinil. A bit harder hitting than caffeine if you ask me, but if it’s an emergency then so be it. Forget the MREs too. Yes, they’re alright and if you want food then they’re a good bet. Personally I’d rather just keep a bunch of emergency rations on hand. They take up less space and weight for the calories you get and also require a lot less water to process in your body.

How about money? The people who say that they can get away with just credit cards or debt cards are idiots. They’re the ones that haven’t been in a full blown disaster. Sure they may point out that during Hurricane Katrina; FEMA gave people credit gift cards to use. But that’s a different scenario. People were more willing to accept the cards because they were backed by the US government. And for those of you carrying silver and gold in your BOBs? Well, you’re all just idiots. Good luck getting a fair trade on your precious metals. What do I prefer? US dollar bills would be my choice. While maybe a bit more fragile than metals, they weight a lot less and are fairly waterproof. I wouldn’t even bother with different currencies if you aren’t in the US because US dollars are so well known that they’re taken almost anywhere around the world. You want to keep a few high bills like hundreds but also some smaller bills as well. You don’t want to go around looking for change. Plus if you flash a lot of money it makes you a bigger potential target for muggers. Perhaps carry a few dollars in quarters for phones if necessary. No more though since they can get heavy. How much you carry is up to you. For a small kit I don’t think you should have more than $1000 in it. Remember, BOBs are short term. If you’re bunkering up in a house that’s all prepared with food etc, you don’t really need a BOB (although it’s good to have just in case you have to run from your safe house).

Just some things that bother me about peoples’ BOBs off the top of my head. I have a technical proposal that I’ve been slacking on doing so time to stop procrastinating and get back to work.

I don’t think a gal could have been more excited than I was when I saw the new Christmas Color Combos. *swoon* They totally rock me like a hurricane. Love, love, love them!

Blue Slush is such a wonderful classic Christmas color combo so when I saw this, I just had to make something.

Versatility is a big issue for me. I hate being locked in to one way of using something so I decided to decorate this wooden shrine so it could feature a pretty ornament at Christmas but hold a candle year round. A little paint, a little glue and my lovely color kit, easy as slice and bake cookies
