Last Thursday several hundred folks came to the Kitsap County Fairgrounds and registered as homeless in the county and received all kinds of good information, referrals, a great hot meal – thanks to Mike Maroney and Salvation Army who served close to 500 Shepherd Pie dinners! Big commendations to Lief Bentson from Kitsap County and many others who worked hard to host this great event. Many agencies were able to connect with the guests and discuss solutions.

In a way it reminded me of the days when I was a pastor and I’d attend a really

good conference. Only difference was there and then I was going to seek knowledge and encouragement in my career and I was usually taking away books and notebooks for study. These folks on Thursday were seeking knowledge and understanding about how to survive, to make their way with little or no resources. They were taking away pillows, blankets, driver’s licenses and health information. Maybe none of these great folks understood the subtlety. I did and, even though I enjoyed myself and I loved the setting, I went away

a little sad.

It’d be great to see these folks be able to attend the first kind of conference – a career enhancing conference and be able to volunteer their time to help others at Project Connect instead of going to get a pillow. God, grant us Your grace. Bremerton Rescue Mission, now with two meal/outreach sites up and running and number three on the way, has its sights set on Discipleship Houses, where men and women can come into resources, education, careers and most of all, the power and love of God.

Okay, not that I have a big problem with recall, but in the interest of making the details of each hand very easy to remember, I brought a notepad with me yesterday so I could jot down the stack sizes and blind levels of the key hands I played… and I was extremely surprised at how poorly this was received at my table. I don’t think there was one person I played with that wasn’t bothered by this. I got several “I didn’t realize we were being tested” and “there’s a test later” and “should I read your notes before I act?” comments. Part of me wanted to explain what I was doing and that it wasn’t personal, but ultimately, I decided it was best to just smile and raise my eyebrows since anything that is throwing my opponent’s off their game is good for me. Also, I usually throw people some rope and let them know if they made a good lay down or not, but I’ve decided that no one has any business being entitled to what I’m doing… well, unless they want to read my blog every day and that’s okay with me! I was able to splash around a lot more today and I got involved in a lot of pots.

Key Hand #1 – (25/50) – I raise UTG to 150 with 8c7c – Pretty aggressive play being in horrible position… but honestly, I don’t mind playing a hand like this in that spot in No Limit, especially when I have the betting lead. Two people call. Flop comes down 732, one club. I can definitely think of worse spots. I bet out $375, one fold, and one quick raise to $1200. I strongly consider shipping it since I’m having a hard time thinking of hands that have me beat… but then I start thinking about my opponent and decide that he’s never bluffing here… and he’d probably even make this move with A7. Plus, do I really wanna ship my stack with top pair, weak kicker in the first round? Not what I had in mind when I raised the pot in the first place.

Key Hand #2 – (25/50) – 3 people limp, I call with JdTd in the small blind, BB taps. T36 flop, two hearts. Not really sure why, but I decide to check my top pair and it checks around. I bet out $275 on a 2 turn… and the same guy from last hand raises to $750. I shake my head, kind of irritated, but fold. He shows 54 for the nut straight.

Key Hand #3 – (25/50) – 2 people limp, I make it 225 to go from LP with Kd4d, obviously trying to make up for some of the ground I’ve lost. One of the limpers calls and I have position HU to a 987 flop with two diamonds. He checks, I bet $350 and he calls. Turn is a 4. He checks again, I decide he has a draw… probably a straight draw… or a weakish pair… and bet $800. I only have $1100 behind after my bet, so it’s pretty clear I’m never folding here. He mucks and I pick up my first decent pot.

Key Hand #4 – (50/100) – I call a raise to 300 on the button with AcJc. Flop comes down 877, with one club and we are HU. He bets 300 and I call… not based on the strength of my hand, but simply to see what he does on the turn and if I can take the pot away from him. The turn is a Qh, putting two to a flush on board. He bets 300 again and I decide that he’s not too excited about his hand and pop it to 875. He tanks for a bit, looks like he’s going to throw it away, and then shoves on me. I fold.

Key Hand #5 – (50/100) – two people limp, I call with 6c5c in late position, both blinds are in. Flop comes Q94 with two clubs. It checks to me and even though I have position, everyone has shown weakness, and I have a flush draw, I check since a Q9 combo on the flop is going to be in the range of a lot of hands and I think I’m usually getting called here. The turn is a 2, no club, and it checks to my right (same guy from last hand) and he bets 300. I have 1900 in all, and I consider calling, but I decide that I don’t really wanna call for 15% of my stack when I don’t think I’m going to get paid off if I hit my flush draw. Instead, I decide that with my stack size and the situation at hand, shoving it all in is best, as it strongly increases my chances of winning the pot right now. I do just that and this time the guy looks like he might call, but folds instead. Sweet! Even though I really want a fold there, getting called isn’t the worst thing in the world since I do have 10 outs.

Key Hand #6 – (75/150) – I have Qh8h in the SB and we have 3-way action to the flop. The board comes QT4 with three spades. No need to protect my hand here. Anyone with a big spade or a flush is at least going to call me, might even raise me, and I’ll have no idea where I’m at. Might as well try to take a card off and see what happens. Another 4 hits the turn and I could define my hand here, but I decide the situation hasn’t changed much, and it checks around again. Q on the river and it’s up to me with my full house. There’s 450 in the pot and I settle on 500. Since I figure no one has much, I might as well make as much as possible just in case someone wants to look me up. The BB calls and I scoop a pretty good pot for such little action.

Key Hand #7 – (100/200) – UTG limps, small blind raises to 1100 and I look down at AA in the BB. I ship my stack and SB calls with JJ. My hand holds and I’m up to 7100 in chips and an M of 19. Awesome.

Key Hand #8 – (200/400) – Folds to me and I raise to 1100 with KhTh. BB says “why do you have to raise when I got a decent hand?” and finally calls. Board comes AJx. He has 2500 total. This would be my first big mistake of the tournament. He checks to me and I bet 1400. He shoves it and I call and miss my straight. Bad play by me. No need for me to bet the flop here. Any bet by me is going to commit me to the pot with his stack size and he’s never going to fold an ace here. My best option was to check behind on the flop, try to hit my gutshot for free, or re-evaluate how much he likes his hand on the turn. In reality, I think he would’ve lead into me on the turn and I could’ve folded, saving 2500… but instead, I did the stupid thing, and now my big stack is a medium stack.

Key Hand #9 – (200/400) – Button raises to 1200 with 2100 behind. I have AhTh in the BB and put him all in. He calls with A9 and I win with a full house. Back up to 8300.

Key Hand #10 – (200/400) – Some of the details of this hand might be fuzzy since I didn’t leave any notes. The guy I beat in the pot was to my right and was steaming so bad after the hand that I didn’t want to needle him too much further. I have 97 in the BB and there were a few limpers. The board comes 863 with two hearts. It checks all the way around. Turn is 4s and the guy to my right bets 1200. I have a heart and spade in my hand, we both have pretty deep stacks, and there’s tons of cards that could come on the river that could win me the pot… not just my straight outs. I call. Everyone else folds and the 5s hits, making me a straight. He bets out 1200 again and I raise him to 3300. He goes into insta-tilt. Finally folds… and doesn’t let this hand go the rest of the tournament. He’s constantly asking me about it and I never give him the slightest bit of info. Later, when he busts, he tells me “You better be here next time.” LOL!

Key Hand #11 – (300/600) – UTG raises to 1700. I have AA in LP and decide that he has enough behind that he’ll fold a weaker hand if I re-raise him here, so I just call. The blinds fold and we see a T32, two spade flop. He immediately ships for 4200 and I call. He shows KsJs, I turn a set, and he misses the river. I’m up to over 20,000 now.

Key Hand #12 – (400/800) UTG limps, I limp with KQ, SB folds, BB checks. Board comes J83 and it checks to me. No one has show strength, but the limp is kind of confusing me, the BB is a good player, and I’m in obvious steal position… so I just check. An ace hits the turn and the BB bets 1200. Limper folds and I call. Yeah, I have a gutshot here, but that’s not why I called. I figured the BB would raise preflop with a good ace, there’s a heart draw on the board, and I just feel like 90% of the time, he’s going to check the river and I can win with a bluff. 6h hits the river and he does check. I bet 2700 and he folds.

Key Hand #13 – (500-1000) I made it to the final table with the chip lead and I’m feeling pretty great about my play so far. 1 person limps, I have KJ on the button, the SB makes it 3000 to go, BB folds, limper folds and it’s up to me. The SB is a solid player, but I’m getting 4 to 1 to call and I have position on him, so I easily make the call. The board comes J high and he bets 4000. I don’t even hesitate to ship it all in and he quickly calls and shows KK. Ugh. I’d rather see Aces here… I don’t hit my two outer and my stack has been devastated down to 3500. This hand was eating at me all day yesterday and it’s unbelievably how poorly I played it. I just didn’t stop to think about what was going on. Yes, I was getting great odds preflop so I think calling there is correct. My flop play is what kills me. When he leads out for 4000, that doesn’t say a whole lot.. but the fact that he raised to a mere 3000 preflop when two people already limped tells the whole story. If his hand was vulnerable, he would’ve made it 6000-7000 to go in an effort to win the pot right there, but he clearly wanted action on his big pair. If that wasn’t enough information to fold for 4000 on the flop despite making top pair, I always had the option of just calling and seeing how much he liked his hand on the turn. When he ships it on a non-Ace turn, I think I can safely fold there and still have 15000 in chips. Needless to say, I misplayed the hand badly and it probably cost me a tournament I could have won.

Key Hand #14 – (1000-2000) I have 6000 total and 98 in the small blind… we’re close to the money bubble, so I could fold here, have 5000 left, and still have a full orbit to find a better spot…but I’m kind of tilted now and decide to just ship it even though I know I’m getting called 100% of the time by the big stack. On the other hand, I need to double up more than I need to preserve chips, so it’s probably worth the gamble… and I might even have the best hand! He shows T8 though and I’m dominated and his hand holds. GG me!

Ugh… I felt I played spectacularly the whole tournament, with the exception of two hands, but unfortunately, the last mistake cost me 80% of my chips when I was holding a big stack. Great tournament + One Huge Blunder = No Money.

Financial success and the ability to achieve long-term financial goals, such as purchasing a home, often depend on a person’s credit score.

By maintaining a high credit score, you can secure better rates on mortgages and other loans from banks and credit unions. A low score can prevent access to loans with lower interest rates—so you pay more for the money you borrow. The higher your score and the more solid your credit history, the less you pay to borrow.

Managing and improving credit is an important first step in securing an affordable rate on a loan.

Credit scores—which can range from 300 to 850—may be impacted by:

Payment history. Make all payments on time.

Level of debt. Avoid “maxing out” credit cards or maintaining high balances.

Length of credit history. Aim for a long history of responsible credit management.

Type of credit. Make sure to use a mix of credit (such as credit cards, retail accounts, or home and car loans) appropriately.

New credit or inquiries. While shopping for good rates won’t hurt a score, opening multiple credit accounts in a short timeframe can.

You also need someone you can trust to guide you through this process. Michelle Garcia has been a loan originator since 1996. She has helped many of her clients re-establish their credit score to put them in better positions to purchase a home or to refinance their current one. Her clients are loyal and know Michelle will always point them in the right direction.

So many of us think our STUFF doesn’t stink. We often think the STUFF we buy, is worth more than we paid for it when we go to sell it.

I think our STUFF is worth approximately 25% of what we paid for it. Now that’s a broad statement I know but If you do some research on eBay or What’s it Worth to You .com you can back-up or surpass my 25% of retail estimate. Check out:

www.ebay.com and/or www.wiw2u.com

Of course homes, vehicles and STUFF of the finest quality and condition sell best. Items that reflect the best features and benefits of their category sell best too, like;

The best home in the best neighborhood, a gorgeous Chris-Craft boat that has been lovingly kept up or a World War II medal kept in a safe deposit box for all these years.

Items that are hard to come by and rare may sell well too:

The smallest house in the best neighborhood, a car of which only “so many” were made or a chipped platter that served Elvis a Peanut Butter and ‘nanna sandwich.

So before you take my advice do your homework. You never know how much STUFF is worth until you do your research.

John Hackworth hiked through the woods behind an I-5 rest area recently to find a homeless family whose children attend Canby schools. He got the family help, including a place to live.

RE “BUDGET trims lead homeless shelters across Mass. to cut services and beds’’ (Page A1, Nov. 7): In just a few weeks a Boston Christmas tradition will begin that brings smiles to the brightly dressed young and old who visit the Opera House to enjoy “The Nutcracker.’’ Yet there are many in Boston not so blessed, but challenged, who depend on food pantries, homeless shelters, or regretfully must sleep on the street. Every city in Kitsap County needs a “safe park,” where homeless families can sleep in their cars, according to many attending a summit on homelessness Tuesday.
There’s only one in Kitsap County now, offering families living in their cars a secure place to park overnight, shower and connect with caseworkers until they get something more permanent.
It’s been up and going for more than a year and has been heralded as a success.

By Charlotte Hendricks, HSD, Connie Jo Smith, EdD, and Becky Bennett, EdD Learning to live a healthy

By Charlotte Hendricks, HSD, Connie Jo Smith, EdD, and Becky Bennett, EdD

Learning to live a healthy lifestyle begins during the early years of life. For many children, the need for health and safety education becomes a reality much too early. According to the Children’s Defense Fund, each day approximately thirty-three children die from unintentional injuries and 383 children are arrested for alcohol or drug offenses. (1) Most injuries and many unhealthy lifestyle choices involving children can be prevented by integrating safe and healthy habits into early care and education classroom curriculum in a nonthreatening, natural way. Infusing the curriculum with health-related information addresses the day-to-day needs of each child and helps children practice habits that may someday save their lives. Since high-quality, early childhood classrooms collaborate with the families of the children enrolled, incorporating health education into the curriculum may also have a positive impact on the home life of young children.

Because there are a myriad of health-related topics, it may be difficult to know what information is most important for young children to know. Children need to learn and practice skills that directly affect their daily lives. For example, young children should practice self-help skills such as brushing teeth, washing hands, choosing nutritious foods, and dressing. Along with learning such skills, they need to understand why they do these things. Understanding why helps children transfer healthy decision making to specific circumstances in their life. Other safety-related information such as burn prevention, poisoning prevention, and pedestrian safety can help children make good decisions in potentially life-threatening situations.

Health education also supports other areas of development. For example, helping children understand health concepts supports cognitive development. Providing nutritious and appetizing food choices and serving family-style meals and snacks reinforces decision-making skills and promotes healthy choices. Introducing health and safety words such as dentist, germs, helmet, and condiments increases vocabulary development. Being active and building muscles enhances a child’s health and physical development. And when children brush their teeth, they increase their small-motor coordination and finger strength, attributes that will be helpful to them as they begin to write.

Another benefit of promoting healthy habits early is that children feel empowered by their ability to make decisions and to practice skills. This increased autonomy helps build confidence and self-esteem, leading to positive social and emotional development.

Effective health education cannot be accomplished by telling children about health and illness, nor can it be addressed adequately through teaching an occasional unit on it, through routines, or through incidental learning. Effective health education requires that children understand the concepts, practice the skills, and develop the necessary intellectual tools. Hands-on activities and materials in the learning environment are important to support health education. An excellent way to make health education a natural part of learning is by providing stimulating and developmentally appropriate materials and toys in your classroom learning centers.

Start by offering a wide range of materials in an attractive and organized way. For each health topic, include related materials in classroom learning centers such as the library or book center, the dramatic-play or housekeeping area, the table-toy or manipulatives area, the science area, the art center, and the block corner, as well as the outside learning space. For example, when focusing on dental health, try adding to the library center books about teeth and dentists. Add empty toothpaste containers to the dramatic-play area to encourage role-play and conversation. Add different brands and flavors of empty toothpaste and mouthwash containers to the table-toy area, and ask children to match lids to containers. (You may be surprised at how much fun children have taking lids off and putting them on again. This is a great activity for fine-motor development too.) Also add to the table-toy area puzzles that show teeth. In the science area, include real teeth, dental supplies, and dental tools in order to encourage exploration and learning. Include magnifying glasses so children can take a closer look at the teeth. Old magazines in the art area can be used to find and cut out or tear out pictures of teeth to paste onto a class collage, or you can add toothbrushes to the art area to be used for painting. Pictures of dentist offices in the block area may inspire young builders to create dentist chairs or dental offices out of blocks. Animals with teeth can be added to the block area or toy area to encourage discussion.

Teachers and parents should remember that learning takes place every day and everywhere. Family involvement is an important component in early childhood health education. Parents are children’s first teachers, and most of what a child learns has its beginnings in the home. Collaboration with families provides continuity between home and school and enhances children’s learning in both environments.

One way to involve families is by giving them information and ideas. A family information and activity bulletin related to each health topic can extend children’s learning through suggested at-home activities. This resource also can provide family members with concise information that applies to their child’s developmental or health needs.

Family photographs can help children see that families can be different sizes and have different members (for example, a little sister, a big brother, one mother, an aunt, or two fathers). Photographs can also expose children to new ideas and diverse cultures. For example, looking at different hairstyles when learning about hair care exposes children to cultural differences and adds new vocabulary (bangs, beehive, bantu/zulu knots, cornrows, buzz cut, dreadlocks, French twist, ponytail, pigtails, khokhol, ringlets, and more). Providing a variety of foods can also support diversity and help children broaden their experiences.

Helping children become aware of and appreciative of their body is a beginning step in encouraging them to take care of their body throughout their lives. Daily routines such as hand washing, toothbrushing, and exercising start children on the road to a healthy lifestyle. Planning and providing appropriate health education for young children serves as a foundation for lifelong healthy habits.

The recently revised and updated book Growing, Growing Strong: A Whole Health Curriculum for Young Children includes developmentally appropriate activities, suggested materials to add to learning centers, and reproducible family information and activity bulletins for more than thirty health topics.

As of yet undecided… The race for Mayor of Bremerton was too close to call as the Kitsap County Auditor released its initial counts earlier this evening… Polls are closed and the numbers are: Will Maupin with 2,392 votes for 48.11%… Patty Lent with 2,433 votes for 48.93%… And a walloping write-In candidate commanding 147 votes for a dismal 2.96% — split between all write-in candidates.

All votes are yet to be counted. As a large majority of voters across the state have transitioned to the mail-in ballot, therefore those and the ballots collected at polling sites are still to be counted…

Check back with the county for final results on measures across the ballot…. Check back with Moen Nov. 8 @ Winterland as Neutralboy throws down an at-least-you-gave-them-all-the-finger non-election party in honor of the altruistic write-in candidate.

And check back with The Smokestack for more alternative culture smut!!

By Christina Rude

Stroller Strides is a total fitness program for moms with babies/children in strollers.

Held indoor at the Kitsap Mall, it includes “power walking” and “stations” where moms do a variety of body toning exercises. Participants use exercise tubing (which is provided), the stroller and the mall environment to workout — a great workout for any level of exerciser.

Where: Kitsap Mall 10315 Silverdale Way Silverdale (park by the Kohls main mall entrance and meet by the children’s play area at the North end of the mall).

When: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, 8:45-9:45 a.m.

Age level: It is recommended your baby be at least 6 weeks of age to begin class. Children can participate in classes up to any age, so long as they still enjoy a ride in the stroller.

Cost: The first class is FREE. Single, monthly and memberships include:

Single Class Pass – $15. Suitable for the out-of-town visitor or guest. Or, pay as you go for uncertain schedule changes.

10 Class Pass – $99. Save over $50 on 10 classes. This package gives 10 classes which can be used at any time within 6 months from date of purchase.

Monthly Membership – $49 plus a one-time registration of $55. Unlimited participation. Sign up on the day of your first free class, and receive a member T-shirt, a stroller towel, and additional gifts from business partners.

Tri-Class Pass – $169. Allows 3 classes per week for 3 months.

Things to Bring: Any kind of stroller that is not prone to tipping, water, and a towel or mat for our ground exercises. Arrive at all classes at least 15 minutes before start time. We leave promptly at start time and wouldn’t want to leave anyone behind

More information: The workouts are 1-hour. The walk is approximately 50-minutes, followed by 10-minutes of abs and/or stretching. Consult your doctor before starting this or any other exercise program. For more details call Ellecia Williams (800) 972-0928 or visit www.strollerstrides.com. Check out the LUNA Moms Club and participate in: Playgroups (once per week); Moms’ Nights Out (once per month); and “Mommies with a Mission” Activities (four times per year).
