Loved up shopping in Amsterdam

Gone are my days of toasting on a hot beach, melting into a book. It’s not that i’d pass up the chance, but with two peely wally men in my life, i’ve starting to embrace other kinds of holidays. Our honeymoon was no exception. We spent five amazing days wandering around the scented streets of Amsterdam. What a stylish city!

I’m rather nosey by nature and loved walking back to our apartment in the evening stealing glances into those enormous canalside houses. What great taste these Amsterdamers have. Everything was clean lines, quirky antiques, beautiful artwork. Extreme house envy ensued.

What also impressed me were the shops. Amongst all the crappy souvenir and sex shops were plenty of lovely wee shops selling handmade, locally crafted, retro and kitsch goodies. Windows piled with mountains of blue and white china, hand knitted chunky throws, upcycled furniture, I was in love…

Recently I read Nina’s blogpost Home sweet home which was inspired by the original idea by Barbaramama to share objects of inspiration or beauty in your home (for a full list of participants see her blog). Fellow bloggers Rivka and Philomeen had already joined and shared a glimpse of their home. For me it proved a really good way to look at things from a new perspective, also because it took me ages to get some decent shots… For my first HSH-post I chose to sneak a peek in my little boy’s room. It’s the first room we decorated when we moved house, you can guess the theme colour. I thought it was really important to make his room as light and positive as possible.

{I – the small bookcase has been decorated with vintage wallpaper that was from my room when I was a little girl / there is also a vintage Popple which was mine also / the ceramic giraffe is from Kitsch Kitchen / the ceramic lamb is vintage from Etsy – I can’t remember which shop / the garland is by Engelpunt}

{II The koi is by Madame Moo via Roppongi / the wall decal is by Belle & Boo / the elephant’s head I bought at Queen’s day}

{III The closet is from Romania, imported by De bonte kamer / Artis de Partis / poster Mister Moon & cards (seal by by Darling Clementine & Fox and Rooster by Miss Honeybird via PSIkhouvanjou}

Vandaag begint mijn leuke wereld

en die begint met een leuke tas. Ik passeerde vandaag na mijn bezoek aan Lotte van Ladda toevallig voorbij een erg hip winkeltje in de Serpentstraat dichtbij de Vrijdagmarkt, de Kammerstraat en het Graffitistraatje in Gent, genaamd Zsa Zsa Rouge! En ik begin mijn leuke wereld met een leuke tas die ik daar gekocht heb. Een tas van Pedale, met Kitsch Kitchen-motief voor slechts 33euro en mijn nieuwe Macbook past er perfect in. Ik ben dus blij met mijn leuke tas in mijn leuke wereld! Welkom.

Aunt Jennys Cookbook

I inherited a bunch of great stuff from my family. There were not any jewels or expensive valuables. But after three generations of artists, chefs, packrats, and general collectors-of-things, there were many wonderful things to cherish. When my now-late mother and I had to make a hasty skiddoo from our family home on the West side of Anderson, Indiana – I scooped up every treasure I could get before the sheriff came to lock the doors (back-taxes were overwhelming). A modest collection of antique and vintage cookbooks made it out of the heap, and I am thrilled every time that I leaf through them that I got them out of the house. The pictures, above all else, are invaluable and entertaining. They depict a time in America when cooking was very important to families – especially the women. The irony is that almost every cookbook I have was my grandfather’s. He served in WWII on Christmas Island as a cook. Before that he owned and cooked for Klusmeier Cafe in Terra Haute, Indiana. When I was growing up, every night he would have different recipes and books spread out in the kitchen – cooking up a new and delicious meal. So I have decided to share some of the neater selections from the cookbooks here. This particular cookbook is from Spry shortening. To see the pages in their entirety, check my flickr.

The look on Calvin’s face is unmistakable: it is the look that every housewife dreamed she would see on her own husband’s face as she presented him a meal. Or at least – that is what this picture implies.
