Découverte surprenante lors de ma petite recherche quotidienne du côté musical de ce monde.

Jori Hulkkonen né en 1973 en Finlande, inspiré grandement par ce qu’il entendait à la radio durant sa jeunesse dans un pays où l’electro est fort présent, ce DJ a attiré mon attention. Lorsque je me suis informé sur ses réalisations, je fut fort étonné de voir qu’il avait travaillé (beaucoup) avec notre TIGA national. Vous pouvez même trouver sur son site officiel une bio écrite en partie par TIGA lui-même. Il a coréalisé Sunglasses At Night avec Jori et plusieurs autres mix.

Un studio assez impressionant, des tracks et plusieurs albums déjà sortis, il se promène et produit sans arrêt. Un des ses remix se retrouve même sur une des compilations de Kistuné, ce qui n’est pas mal du tout. On peut donc considérer sa musique comme de la qualité sonore

I first spotted this lot back in 2004 when they supported Babyshambles at the Colly in Cov, along with a pre fame Noisettes. Striding on stage to a wall of clipped garage rock tones, front man Phil Bush managed to startle the crowd expecting a standard new wave revivalist outfit with his hushed husky tones. Blessed with a soulful voice to rival Stevie Winwood in his 60’s pomp, or even yer man from the commitments; tales of love, violence, triumph and humiliation were delivered with audacious reverence. I was hooked from the off. In a world yet to feel the effect of MySpace, tunes were still hard to come by sometimes. A trawl through eBay found a promo for debut single Beat Me To The Bone. It cost me a tenner, but together with its b-side A Bounder And a Cad, it delivered a 5 minute burst of adrenalin that dominated the top 25 lists on my iTunes. Follow up single Poor Innocent Boys also released on 1-2-3-4 is the first record I’ve bought that I actually wore out. The last time I tried to use it when I DJ’d caused a right old racket, and together with its flip My Ex-Valentine, became staple anthems in the bars round our way.

Then it all went quiet. A third single on Young and Lost was released but proved all but impossible to locate in the Midlands. Little was heard bar cameo appearances on Kitsune compilations. This was to be an indication of their future. Cazals became the first ‘guitar’ band to do an album with the iconic French label, and decamped to Paris to record debut album ‘What of Our Future‘ named after an old b-side. Gallic inspiration informed their new output, as several old live and demo favorites evolved into a pulsating, electronica fuelled opus. Personal favorites include Control OSS-117, name checking a Parisian Bondesque hero and Both Sides, a soaring ode to a lost relationship, that captures the spite, sorrow and hope that occurs in such circumstances. The affiliation to Kitsune beefed up their single output, as having the influence of the one of the world’s coolest labels in their corner led to remix duties being undertaken by a who’s who of dance music in the late 00’s with Crookers, The Shoes, Bloody Beetroots and Lifelike all getting in on the action. They opened for Daft Punk in Tokyo and their acclaimed video for Somebody Somewhere even caught the eye of a certain Kanye West.

At the time of writing it has emerged that Cazals have decided to call it a day and pursue other projects, solo careers, production, management and acting are all on the horizon for disbanded members. It is unfortunate that a band that constantly evolved and strove to push boundaries instead of maintaining a status quo, have passed without claiming the success their enterprise and talent demanded.

Memory Tapes - Seek Magic

I first heard Memory Tapes’ Bicycle on the Kitsune Mix which I posted a few days ago.  I loved the song but didn’t bother picking up their LP.  Today, I downloaded the album and I was satisfied from the album cover to the end of the last track.  It gives me that warm summer feeling. I have waited ages to do a decent Crystal Fighters post, they’re everywhere at the moment thanks to the massive backing they received from Kitsune. With their latest release they’ve combined my love for London with In Flagranti – no mean feat. Crystal Fighters ‘I Love London’ has been remixed by all and sundry just before its official release date on the 30th Nov, but In Flagranti’s remix was the one that finally made me sit down and write this small piece for it.

In Flagranti are duo Alex Goor and Sasha Crnobrnja (that second name sounds like a joke to be honest or Eastern European town stuck in some mountains) and their sound can be an acquired taste at times, with unusual disco/punk/house mixes that sound like they should slap you in the face but come across more understated.

They’re a real love-them-or-leave them group, a bit like Crystal Fighters themselves.  I love London will give your brain a Marmite moment trying to make you decide if you like it or not. Unfortunately we can’t let you download it for free as we want you to go buy it – however, you can listen to it below AND we’ve thrown in a couple of bonus remixes to go with the In Flagranti mix (Kid Kola’s strange take on the song and 80Kid’s remix which has been spanked around the blogosphere). Aren’t we nice.

Kitsune Compilation Maison 8

I’ve been pretty busy these days so this post will be rather short.  This leaked on Jupiter Lab late October.  Thanks Nico! So I’m not sure if it’s released and if it is, I’m not sure when it was.  Either way, this mix is great and they’ve definitely bounced back from the slum that was Kitsune 5-7.  DL after the jump.

Well it’s time again for the new Kitsune compilation. Those who read tradehooks would know how excited we get for these compilations, and know how disappointed I was when yesterday I saw it in the Jbhifi but made a promise to myself that I would support the local establishment for music, and their one copy was missing and I had to put it on order. So now I am waiting. So so patiently. Waiting by the phone for them to reach out and say, selecta ur kitsune 8 is here.

In other kitsune news, our 2nd favourite kitsune 7 compilation artist, two door cinema club (crystal fighters being the first), are just about to release their second single from their forthcoming album due in February 2k10.

Kitsuné released their eighth addition to the Kitsuné Maison series on 16th November, titled The Chic and Nice Issue (for some reason). As always, they’ve added some incredible stuff to this compilation from past and present Kitsuné signings. Two Door Cinema Club and Delphic are the latest additions to the Kitsuné family and their respective debut albums will be out soon. Also, expect singles from Heartsrevolution, Slagsmalsklubben, Beni, Chew Lips and Crystal Fighters.

Kitsuné is probably one of the sickest labels around. From music to clothing to design, they’ve got a number of things on lock. I’ve only been following the label since the 6th compilation, so I might not have the history as some of you, but in my opinion this 8th compilation is the bees mf knees.

The Kitsuné Maison Compilation 8 dropped digitally out in Europe yesterday (November 16) and is now available for everyone else here. The comp offers up a ton of good tunes from the likes of Siriusmo, Midnight Juggernauts, Heartsrevolution, Two Door Cinema Club (amazing new Kitsuné signee), Moulinex, Harvard Bass, Delphic, Memory Tapes, Crystal Fighters, etc etc etc.

As you can probably piece together, this thing is stacked and it would really be a shame to not pick up a copy of the album for yourself. I’ve been trying to figure out which tracks to denote as my “favorites”, but it’s proven difficult, as every song offers up something tasty. However, I can safely say that the new Heartsrevolution, Delphic, Two Door Cinema Club, Logo and My Tiger My Timing tracks are up there on my list.

Welcome to Kitsune Kitsch, my new blog dedicated to weekly helpings of aesthetics and style.  Kitsune Kitsch is mainly about beautiful things, artistic endeavors, and daily inspiration that help make life worthwhile and for readers to see the savvy in the ordinary and mundane.

For those of you unfamiliar with the meaning of my blog title, kitsune is the the Japanese word for a fox, and it usually refers to a woman who has been possessed by the spirit of a fox and has superior intelligence, longevity, and magical powers. Kitsch is a German word denoting art that is considered an inferior, tasteless copy of an extant style of art or a worthless imitation of art of recognized value, like garden gnomes. It also represents sentimental folk art or an aesthetically impoverished object of shoddy production that is similar to zakka. Zakka or the Japanese art of seeing the savvy in the ordinary and mundane.

Weekly blog post topics will include…

Daily outfit posts will have head to toe shots and wardrobe remixes of my outfits, my husband D.’s outfits, and street style photographs.

Fashion topics will mainly focus on fashion-on-a-dime and vintage clothing as well as fashion photography, magazines, and any other fashion inspiration that I encounter.

Inspiration posts will discuss aesthetically-pleasing and stylish inspiration that may not be directly related to fashion, but are very influential and come from art, film, literature, music, and many other sources.

Over the last few seasons Kitsune has really caught my eye,from the inspiration of the collections,the lookbook styling,the fabrics utilized,and of course the collection promo videos.

Kitsune are undeniably carving a strong name for themselves in fashion,not to mention the ever impressive Kitsune maison music series.

The aw09 collection “The Graduate”,taking inspiration from the movie is a perfect example.

Even when you watch the movie today (22 years after release),the styling is fantastic,and still very relevant to a modern day young man’s choice of wardrobe

so,  finally, kitsune hit the jackpot……

on this package of evidence it’s all there.  it’s all there folks.  please kitsune, there’s no rush – lets do this properly. no remixes necessary.

These guys are currently my favourite band, originating from east London and signed by the french label Kitsuné who have been bringing us lots of talent recently, from the likes of Digitalism to Delphic. Creating music using merely a synthesiser and a bass guitar, their pulverising beats twin with your mind and it’s a struggle to get Chew Lips’ songs out of your head once they’re in there.

Fronted by a woman, this already distinguishes Chew Lips from countless other bands around. Their disco sound makes you want to shut the lights off, dance around the room and sing at the top of your lungs. “Solo” and “Salt Air” both contain equally catchy choruses, Tigs’ voice is unique, she doesn’t sound like anyone I’ve heard of; and believe me, I’ve heard a LOT of music. Although, Chew Lips may be compared to La Roux or Little Boots, they all carry a similar sound to the 80s click most artists are going for these days, but Chew Lips are much better than anyone who attempts the 80s sound. There is no explanation, they just sound perfect.

Cada vez recibimos con mayor frecuencia las recopilaciones de este sello francés, y es que se sigue consolidando como punto de referencia a la hora de señalar lo más cool de la escena musical independiente.

Fue en mayo cuando nos presentaron su recopilatorio número 7, disponible en Spotify, en el que ya pudimos encontrar a sus apadrinados Crystal Fighters, Phoenix o Autokratz, y en esta ocasión nos encontramos de nuevo a Crystal Fighters, a Midnight Juggernauts, Siriusmo o Memory Tapes. Seguro que darán mucho que hablar.

Y como en anteriores ocasiones, en el teaser de este nuevo recopilatorio han aprovechado para presentar su nueva colección de ropa (sí, también hacen ropa) con una competición entre un chico y una chica para ver quién cambia de atuendo antes. Ich wünsche mir für unseren ersten Geburtstag ja, nebem fantastischen Essen und einer Hand voll DJ-Sets, die sich gewaschen haben, einen Tanzwettbewerb. Wer dabei annähernd an diese Kids aus den USA rankommt, kriegt nen Kuss von mir. Und drei Freigetränke auf mein Konto.

BENI ist übrigens ein belgischer , äh, Künstler. Also er macht Musik, andere sagen, naja, Musik. Es ist halt elektronisch und man kann seinen Poppes dazu hübsch kreisen lassen. Er passt also ganz hervorragend zu uns! Auch weil er beim von uns hochgeschätzten Label Kitsuné zuhause ist. Mehr Infos zu BENI kriege ich gerade nicht zusammen. Aber man höre und kreise (den Poppes, nicht vergessen!).
