AEON วันนี้ต้องจ่ายค่าถุง

Kuala Lumpur

When my sister, Arman, and I decided to go to Kuala Lumpur, we only had one tourist spot in mind

When my sister, Arman, and I decided to go to Kuala Lumpur, we only had one tourist spot in mind – the Petronas Towers. We didn’t really have any idea about the other tourist spots in the Malaysian capital so it was a blessing that we stumbled upon the KL Hop-on Hop-off website during our last minute research.

The KL Hop-On Hop-Off is a city tour wherein you ride a double-deck bus that goes around the city and stops by the major tourist attractions. There is a recorded commentary that guides the tourists as well as a real tour guide that directs our attention to noteworthy sights in KL. A 24-hour KL Hop-On Hop-Off City Tour pass costs 38 MR, roughly around 520 PhP. The tour starts at 8:30 AM and ends 8:30 PM.

We woke up pretty early at around 7:30 AM. When we were getting ready to go out and explore KL, I suggested that we wear the ‘I <3 MY‘ shirts from Giordano while touring KL rather than on our way back to Manila. Why? So that we looked like proper tourists. Haha, okaaay.

Rather than having breakfast in our hotel, we went to Bintang Walk and scouted for a place where we can grab a quick breakfast. We saw a KFC branch and went inside without hesitations. They were serving breakfast meals and I ordered their Sunriser meal which costs 8.80 MR.

KFC Sunriser. Cheese bun, chicken fillet, hash brown, scrambled egg, and juice. Really yummy!

Just a friendly advice, avoid KFC Bukit Bintang’s washrooms! I just couldn’t describe how horrendous the smell was. I thought it was just in the men’s room but my sister said the ladies washroom was gross as well.

We walked towards the intersection of Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail where the Bukit Bintang Station of the KL Monorail was. We were looking for a sign that would point us to the drop off point of the KL Hop-On Hop-Off but we couldn’t find one. We found out at the end of the day that had we walked a little further, we would’ve seen the drop-off point. Since we didn’t see any signs that would tell us where the drop-off point was, we decided to ride the KL Monorail instead then transfer to RapidKL to reach the Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) where the Petronas Towers are located.

Directions.

Inside the KL Monorail. I really love riding different kinds of trains and other kinds of public transport.

Walking to the RapidKL station. It was a long walk from the Bukit Nanas station of the KL Monorail to Dang Wangi station of RapidKL. Good thing that there was a covered walkway.

Ticketing machine at the RapidKL station.

Waiting for the train to arrive.

It took us less than 30 minutes to get to KLCC. We went inside Suria KLCC first since we wanted to use the washroom. Suria KLCC is an upmarket mall at the base of the Petronas Towers. It houses luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton.

Lelaki in Malay, Lalaki in Filipino, Laki-laki in Indonesian. #walalang

For a high-end mall, Suria didn’t really impress me. It housed luxury brands but it didn’t really feel that luxurious. The atmosphere of Suria reminded me of Trinoma. What makes it special though is that it is below the Petronas Towers. Still, the award for the most luxurious mall I’ve visited in Southeast Asia goes to Plaza Indonesia.

The ceiling of Suria is made of glass. While walking around the mall, I looked up and saw one of the Petronas Towers which I thought was a cool touch to the mall.

We looked for the exit so that we could finally see the famous and iconic landmark of Kuala Lumpur. We walked towards the end of Suria and found our way out of the mall.

Buildings in front of the Petronas Twin Towers.

More buildings near Petronas. Good thing that their designs are simple so that all of the attention goes to Petronas.

And finally…

The Petronas Twin Towers! Words can not describe the beauty of these towering structures. They're not just built to be tall, they're built to exude beauty, class, progress, and power.

I was really in awe when I saw the Petronas Twin Towers. They’re the most beautiful buildings I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I couldn’t stop admiring the structures and I walked around to see them from different angles. It’s such a shame that the viewing deck was closed for renovations when we were there.

Of course, I wouldn't forget having my photo taken with those majestic towers.

After doing all the mandatory photo-ops with the Petronas Towers, we headed to the KL Hop-On Hop-Off shed. There was a lady there selling the tickets so we purchased three and waited for the bus to arrive. KLCC is the tour’s first stop by the way.

24-hour KL Hop-On Hop-Off pass.

The KL Hop-On Hop-Off bus. We sat at the upper deck of the bus.

We were given a map of the tour bus’ route and we checked which spots we wanted to explore. First stop, the Menara KL (or the Kuala Lumpur Tower). The Menara KL is the world’s second tallest free-standing tower and it’s used for communications purposes. The tower is built on Bukit Nanas, a hill containing the city’s lone virgin tropical forest.

Most of the attractions in the Menara KL complex can be accessed only if you buy a 45 MR ticket, a price we found too steep. Too bad, I really wanted to see KL from the tower’s viewing deck. There’s also a revolving restaurant at the deck but you have to pay extra to eat there. We just roamed around the areas which can be accessed for free and admired the KL skyline from the hill.

Menara KL Tower, standing at 421 meters, is the second tallest free-standing tower in the world.

What I really liked about KL is that it's green - there are a lot of trees scattered all over the capital.

The Maybank Tower. My second (err, third?) most favorite building in KL next to the Petronas Towers.

After seeing all the free parts of the complex, we headed to the bus stop and waited for the next KL Hop-On Hop-Off bus. We spent roughly 30 minutes in the area and we came back just in time because the tour bus just arrived.

The other stops after the Menara KL weren’t that fascinating for me. The KL Convention Center and Aquaria seemed cool but we didn’t go down the bus to see it. We passed by Bintang Walk and saw the stop we were looking for earlier that day. We checked the map again and the next interesting stop would be KL’s Chinatown.

Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown is located along Jalan Petaling. KL’s Chinatown, like Binondo, is dotted with restaurants and shops. There are plenty of stalls on both side of the streets selling clothes, souvenirs, and whatnot.

Cool, there's a barbershop along the road.

Stalls along Jalan Petaling.

KL's Chinatown is rain proof, there's stretch of 'roof' just in case it rains.

Taho anyone? We really loved this treat. People were lining up for this sweet soya snack.

After exploring KL’s China Town, we went back to the KL Hop-On Hop-Off drop off point and waited for the next bus to arrive. While we were waiting, we wondered about the possibility of going on a side trip to Singapore the following day. Why? Because it seems like we’ve already seen what we have to see in KL. I asked the lady manning a bus company’s booth and she told me that it would take a while before we reach Singapore. Okay, scrap that. True enough though, we didn’t do much on our third day. Moving on…

It started to drizzle while we were waiting for the next bus. Thank goodness that the bus stop had a roof or else we would’ve been touring KL with wet clothes. The bus arrived before it started to rain hard. We had to sit at the lower deck of the bus since the upper deck was already full.

Since it was raining really hard, we couldn’t go down and explore the other tourist spots. Then again, most of the other tourist spots need not be explored. The downside is that I wasn’t able to take decent photos of those spots. I managed to take a few snaps by peeking outside the bus’ doors when wide open but they aren’t that good…

Istana Negara or the National Palace. This is where Malaysia's royal family resides. You can't go inside though. I pity the girl who went down there since the place is pretty isolated and she had to wait for thirty minutes for the next bus.

The National Museum.

Masjid Negara or the National Mosque of Malaysia. I found the Mosque really beautiful. It's such a shame that I wasn't able to go down to take some better snaps of the structure.

The 95-meter flag pole at the Dataran Merdeka or Independence Square. It's one of the tallest flag poles in the world.

The streets were already starting to get flooded due to the heavy rains.

We alighted the bus once it reached the first stop, which is KLCC. Basically, we have seen most of the must-see places in Kuala Lumpur. It was still raining when we reached KLCC and only I had an umbrella. Since I was wearing a jacket with a hood, I lent my umbrella to my sister then dashed towards Suria.

Suria's Entrance's

We weren’t able to eat lunch so we went to Suria’s food court. I was supposed to have Nasi Lemak for lunch but something similar captured my attention.

Nasi Bojari from one of the food court concessionaires. Really delicious!

That’s Nasi Bojari. As I’ve mentioned, as long as there’s chicken… I’m good. The seafood viand was also good, it would’ve been better though if it was a bit more spicy. We bought Malaysian pastries after as our dessert.

Malaysian pastries. The green one's good.

We went around Suria a little bit more after having lunch. My sister was able to buy some things in Suria but sadly, I wasn’t able to do so since most of the merchandise there are (way) out of my budget. We headed to the bus stop after going around Suria so we can go back to the Bukit Bintang area and then walk to our hotel for a much needed rest.

Later in the evening, we were supposed to go out and walk to Pavilion for dinner. Sadly, my sister wasn’t feeling too well and told Arman and I to go ahead without her. She just requested for us to buy her Floss (a type of bread) from Breadtalk. By the way, Pavilion is another upscale mall in Kuala Lumpur at the end of Jalan Bukit Bintang. It’s fairly new, it was opened in 2007.

Pavilion mall. I liked this mall more than Suria. It's really nice inside and there's a good variety of shops. Their food court's fantastic as well.

A fountain outside Pavilion. A lot of people are having their photos taken there.

For me, Pavilion is a hundred times better than Suria. Okay, I was exaggerating a bit but it’s much much better than Suria. I guess I expected to much from Suria because it was *the* mall at the base of the Petronas Towers. I really enjoyed going around Pavilion. Also, the atmosphere has an upscale but laid back vibe into it.

Taking photos inside Pavilion is allowed, unlike in Suria.

Arman and I went to the first level of Pavilion since the food court was there. While walking around the food court area, something caught my attention…

Sticky! My colleague brought this to work one time and I told myself that I'd buy some when I reach KL.

Sticky is a shop that sells traditional, hand-made candies. It originated from Australia but the shop nearest the Philippines is in Kuala Lumpur. One of my colleagues in IBM brought a jar to the office and it was really good. I watched the Sticky staff make candy by rolling thick slabs of candy into a thick tube.

Sticky's staff rolling a fat roll of candy.

I wanted to buy a jar of candies with assorted flavors as pasalubong for my mom but I decided to look for other stuff first just in case I find something better. A jar of assorted candies costs 20.00 MR, which is a bit expensive for candy. Then again, it was for my mom and I don’t mind spending that much for her.

For dinner, I bought a plate of chicken curry, fried egg, and vegetables with steamed rice. No, I didn’t have Nasi Lemak.

Chicken Curry platter from one of the food booths in Pavilion's food court.

It wasn’t spectacular but it was good enough. It wasn’t as spicy as I hope it would be though.

Right after having my dinner, I had this sudden craving for something sweet. I scanned the shops near the food court and my sight locked to a shop whose name I had heard of before… J.Co Donuts & Coffee. J.Co Donuts & Coffee is a popular doughnut shop that originated from Jakarta, Indonesia. Another colleague of mine told me to try their donuts when I went to Jakarta earlier this year but I failed to do so. I approached J.Co’s counter and ogled at the shining, glazed doughnuts before my eyes. I was supposed to take a photo but a staff member told me that it is not allowed, shame. I asked the lady what the doughnuts were and I chose Why Nut, a doughnut filled with peanut butter. I’m such a sucker for anything with peanut butter.

J. Co Donuts and Coffee at the ground (err, basement?) level of Pavilion KL.

J.Co's Why Nut. To be fair, the hype my friend had for J.Co was spot on. Either that or I just love peanut butter too much.

The doughnut was delicious! Again, I couldn’t recall how much it costs but I’m pretty sure it didn’t cost more than 3 MR. Calling enterprising Filipinos, please franchise J.Co Donuts & Coffee as well as Sticky here in Metro Manila!

And that concludes our second day in Kuala Lumpur. We pretty much covered the must-see places of KL in a day. Too bad it rained though but it was okay, we still had fun. Problem is, since we’ve visited most of the tourist spots in a day, we had no clue as to where to go on our third day.

Oh, just a random observation – Malaysians really love their flag. I mean, wherever you go in Kuala Lumpur, there’s a Malaysian flag. The lamp posts have Malaysian flags hung on them, buildings have Malaysian flags on their facades, heck, even our tour bus had Malaysian flags beside every window. I wouldn’t be surprised if Malaysians have blankets and wallpapers with the Malaysian flag on it. Not that I disliked it, not at all. I’m actually impressed with the patriotism of the Malaysians.

Also, I noticed that unlike in Jakarta where the streets were flooded with new cars (with a number of them being of luxury marques), quite a number of vehicles in Kuala Lumpur were old. Most of them look similar as well. The cars in KL are either Proton or Perodua, I rarely saw cars from foreign manufacturers.

… or Welcome to Kuala Lumpur in English.

My sister purchased Cebu Pacific promo tickets way back in February and after months of waiting, my sister, her boyfriend Arman, and I finally flew to Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. I’ve been wanting to visit Malaysia ever since I saw their Malaysia, Truly Asia tourism campaign which, in my opinion, is at par with our WOW Philippines campaign. It made me curious as to why they claim that their country is Truly Asia.

We arrived in Kuala Lumpur half an hour past 1 in the afternoon, 20 minutes ahead of our scheduled arrival. I knew that we’d be going through the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport so I didn’t expect much from the terminal.

5J 499 at the KLIA LCCT

No jet bridges here given that it's an LCC Terminal. We could emulate the LCCT concept given the rising popularity of LCCs here in the Philippines.

Covered walkway leading to the terminal building

Cebu Pacific and Air Asia X airplanes.

A random thought that popped into my head was the time zone Kuala Lumpur was in. When we landed in KL, the flight attendant announced the time and told us that there is no time difference between it and Manila. If you check the map of the world, KL is farther than Jakarta from Metro Manila and yet the time in Jakarta is an hour behind. I wonder why…

Anyway, as with other international flights, we had to go through immigration first before being able to get out of the terminal. I noticed that there were tarpaulins with instructions regarding their immigration process for foreign passport holders. They had a finger scanner that’s similar to the one in Beijing Capital International Airport and then they placed some sort of stickers on your passport after having your fingers scanned. The immigration officer didn’t ask me to place my fingers on the scanner and just stamped an arrival mark on my passport, no stickers on my passport. I rushed to my sister and Arman to check their passports – both had stickers. I went back to the officer and asked why I didn’t get a sticker but he just told me that there was no need. Err, okay, I was pretty much worried all throughout the day just because of some stickers.

We passed by the Malaysia Tourism booth to get a map of Kuala Lumpur before going out of the terminal. It was already past lunch time so we headed to McDonald’s to grab a quick meal. It was a good thing that we exchanged our Pesos to Ringgits before leaving Manila, saving us the hassle of having our money exchanged in KLIA.

Kuala Lumpur map being given for free at the Malaysian Tourism booth.

The price of the Big Mac in Kuala Lumpur is roughly the same than in Manila (6.95 RM ~ 96 PHP). The drawback is that their drinks are waaaay more expensive, a 22oz cup of orange juice costs 4.95 RM, roughly 70 PHP. Also, taxes aren't included in their listed prices.

Rather than hailing a cab to reach the city center, we rode the KLIA Transit instead. Knowing that the airport is more than 50 kilometers away from the city center, it would be very expensive to ride a cab all the way to the city. We asked around and we were directed towards the KLIA Transit bus which will bring us to the KLIA Express Train that goes all the way to the Kuala Lumpur Sentral. For 12.50 RM, you’d get a fast and comfortable ride to KL.

KLIA Express Ticket.

KLIA Transit Bus. This brought us to the Salak Tinggi station of the KLIA Express Train.

When we arrived at the Salak Tinggi station of the KLIA Express Train, I couldn’t help but feel envious about how progressive Malaysia is. Seriously, the Philippines was way above all other Southeast Asian nations before but now, it is lagging behind its neighbors. I hope we see that changing soon. Anyway, we headed to the platform and waited for the train to arrive.

Scripted shot of me waiting for the train to arrive. Apparently, I was looking at the wrong direction since Malaysia is a country with a left-handed traffic. (Scripted na nga lang mali pa!)

Here comes the train! Yey! And it looks nice.

All three of us were pretty much impressed by the train. I guess the controversial North Rail was supposed to be something like this, connecting Metro Manila to the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport in Clark which is being geared to become our country’s premier international gateway. The train had a nice interior and comfortable seats. There were only a few seats inside but I guess the extra space was needed for the luggage of the passengers. The views while inside the train were fantastic, we passed by what I presume is a palm tree plantation as well as Putrajaya, Malaysia’s administrative capital.

Nice! Not much seats inside though. I guess that the extra space is meant for luggage.

I can see Putrajaya!

The trip from Salak Tinggi to the Kuala Lumpur Sentral took less than 30 minutes, very quick I must say. KL Sentral is a fairly recent development in Kuala Lumpur that aims to become KL’s transportation hub and financial center. It is Southeast Asia’s largest train station and it is surrounded by commercial buildings.

KL Sentral station of the KLIA Ekspres

There are a lot of shops inside KL Sentral Station, perfect for those wanting to buy souvenirs before heading to the KLIA.

We’ve already planned how we’ll reach our hotel while we were on the train so we thought we were good to go. The plan was simple, transfer to the KL Monorail after arriving at KL Sentral. Apparently, it wasn’t that simple at all. The KL Monorail’s Sentral Station is not connected to KL Sentral. We asked for directions and the lady at the information booth told us that we had to go out and walk a bit to reach the KL Monorail. We had to go down to a tunnel-ish area where a lot of buses were in line and walked until we were able to see some sunshine. We followed the covered walkway and saw a sign that the KL Monorail was straight ahead. We followed the sign and walked some more, passing through a not-so-rich neighborhood until we saw the tracks of the KL Monorail. After a few more minutes of walking, we finally saw the KL Monorail station. But wait…

KL Monorail Tun Sambanthan Station... this is the second station already!

We ended up not in KL Sentral Station but in Tun Sambanthan Station, the station after Sentral. Yes, we walked that far. Apparently, we should’ve followed the covered walkway and turned right rather than going straight, darn that KL Monorail straight ahead sign! Anyway, there was nothing we can do since we were there already so we just bought tickets to the Imbi Station where our hotel was nearby.

Buying tickets to Jalan Imbi which costs 1.60 RM one way.

Here comes the KL Monorail, yey!

When we reached Imbi Station, we had no clue on how to reach our hotel. Thank goodness for Google Maps! Arman used his iPhone to navigate and we were able to reach our hotel in one piece. By the way, our hotel was Sky Hotel, a new hotel in the Bukit Bintang area. The location of the hotel is great since it’s really near Bintang Walk and a KL Monorail station. Also, the rooms there are really nice especially for the price. Just a heads up though, the hotel’s entrance has this really strong ginger smell coming from some incense. I had no problem with it but my sister and Arman didn’t like the smell.

Sky Hotel at night. The hotel's location is perfect!

Here's our room in Sky Hotel. Nice for the price. It roughly cost us 2700 PhP each for a 4-day 3-night stay in Sky Hotel. The beds are comfy and the air-conditioning is good.

We settled down and rested for a bit before beginning our exploration of Kuala Lumpur. One of the things that I liked about Sky Hotel is that they have computers where you can access the internet for free. I went there as soon as I found out that it’s free and logged on to my Facebook account to update my status, haha.

Updating my status to my current whereabouts is a mandatory thing. Haha.

After resting for an hour, we headed out to Bintang Walk to check out what’s happening in one of KL’s lively shopping districts. As I have mentioned earlier, our hotel is in the Bukit Bintang area and going to the Bintang Walk from Sky Hotel is very easy. We walked along the long stretch of road heavily populated with shops, hotels, restaurants, and massage parlors.

It was already dinner time when we started exploring Bukit Bintang we looked for a place where we can eat. Not wanting to repeat our Beijing experience wherein we subsisted on fast food (read: non-Chinese), we scouted Bukit Bintang for an authentic Malaysian restaurant. We stumbled upon a restaurant-slash-cafe called the Heritage. What attracted us to it was the number of foreigners having some drinks there. We checked out their menu and went inside.

The Heritage along Jalan Bintang. They serve good food!

Inside the Heritage restaurant. It's very simple and homey.

The menu says that they serve authentic Malaysian cuisine so at least we knew we were going to have some local food. I checked the menu items and noticed the absence of pork dishes – oh right, Malaysia’s dominantly Muslim so pork is a no-no. I focused on the chicken dishes since I’m not really a beef or seafood fan. Actually, I can eat chicken all my life and not get tired of it, which is good if I plan to travel a lot since chicken’s generally a religious-neutral food.

Since I had no clue about Malaysian cuisine, I just looked at the photos and chose the dish that looked the yummiest. Curry, curry, curry, oh, something that resembles Chicken Inasal served with rice, half of a hard-boiled egg, crackers, sambal (hot sauce), peanuts, vegetables, and fried dilis (anchovies, or ikan bilis in Malay), I’d get that one.

Love at first bite! Up to now, I am still craving for Nasi Lemak.

Nasi Lemak, which means fatty rice in Malay, is considered to be Malaysia’s national dish. It’s rice soaked in coconut cream and then the mixture is steamed. It is served with a plethora of side dishes, some of which I have mentioned above. It was love at first bite for me. I just loved how everything went together and the chicken they served was really good. I could not determine how the chicken was cooked but I am quite sure that it was not fried. The meal costs 15.00 MR before taxes, which is around 210 PhP.

After our delicious dinner, we walked along Bintang Walk a little bit more. We stumbled upon a Giordano outlet and looked at their marked-down clothes. They had really cool “I <3 MY” shirts that only costs 89 MR for 3 pieces, which is around 400 PhP a piece. We thought that it would be cool to wear them on our way back to Manila so each of us chose a design and bought the shirts.

We went back to the hotel after purchasing the shirts from Giordano. Along the way, we passed by a convenience store to buy water. The strong ginger aroma of the hotel’s lobby greeted us when we arrived so we hastily entered the elevator to escape it. My sister and I went to the internet station first to do our research for our next day in KL. After finalizing our plan for our second day, we headed to our hotel room for a good night’s sleep.

Hello world!!!

We are back on my Singapore-Kuala Lumpur trip. We are still riding the Hop on Hop off and our first stop is The Menara Tower. It is located in Jalan Punchak, Kuala Lumpur. It is stop number 2 of Hop-on Hop off. It is also known as KL tower.

Menara stands 421 meters high. It is the fourth tallest tower in the world. It was completed in May 1996 and been open to public July 1996. Attractions offered in the tower includes observation deck, dining, shopping, open-air amphitheater, cultural and musical shows. Since we only have one day, we tried visiting the observation deck and the cultural village.

Hello world!!!

Today, I will share to you what happened on our third day. That is the KL Hop on Hop off experience. Have any of you tried it? It may not be originally from Malaysia, but the intention and idea is great. Very tourist friendly.

KL Hop-On Hop-off is developed based on the established services from other “touristy” cities like Paris and London. They just adjust their bus to suit their roads and climate. What’s cool with it is that the bus is equipped with a recorded city tour guide in nine different languages. Yes, you read it right 9 languages. Thus, there is no reason not to understand Malaysia’s History and the stories behind the architectures of the attractions. The bus stops in 22 pit stops. These designated pit stop is conveniently located in such a way that major tourist attraction is nearby. The Hop-on Hop-off service runs in a circle routes and operates 365 days a year even in holidays. Just avoid it during rush hour. Yes, that is from 4PM to 6PM. I have read about it before but being hard headed as I am, we did not listen to the advise and so we were stuck in the traffic. But, anyways I also kind of appreciate it. I witness how Malaysian react in a traffic jam. They are still cool and nobody is honking so even if you are in the middle of traffic you are not stressed. People are discipline and patient. I hope someday, we Pinoys will be like that too. All passengers are provided with pamphlets wherein attractions in each pit stop are enumerated. You will not be lost and you can even plan where you want to go first and you can go back if you realized you miss something. Hehehe. That is because the bus route is in circle.

Originally, I planned to feature here all the places that we visited that day. But, when I started to sort the pictures, I realized that we went to so many tourist attraction that day. It would be so picture loaded and so much information that you may get bored. Thus, this post is solely for the Hop-on hop-off experience. Here are the pictures. Enjoy!!! I very much love my double-decker adventure!!!!
