Siempre imagino que mi madre tiene nada más que venticinco años (la edad que ella tenía cuando yo nací), de ahí, que me enfurezca si la oigo arrastrar los pies, cloquear, toser o pensar como una vieja. No entiendo por qué a los venticinco años le han salido arrugas ni me explico cómo siendo tan joven se acuesta tan temprano.

 Si en algún momento de pavorosa lucidez advierto que es una vieja, tal descubrimiento me llena de horror, por lo cual trato inmediatamente de expulsar dicho conocimiento de la luz de mi conciencia, de manera que en seguida recupera sus venticinco años.

Ella me trata a mí continuamente como si yo fuera una niña, por lo cual nos entendemos perfectamente.

No insisto en crecer, porque sé que es inútil: para nosotras dos, el tiempo se ha estacionado y ninguna cosa en el mundo podría hacerlo correr. Moriré de cinco años y ella de venticinco: a nuestros funerales asistirá una muchedumbre de ancianos niños y de niños que jamás llegaron a crecer.

 So after a lot of debate I decided to get back to what I love – colour and structure. Klimt had more than a small hand in the influences for this belt, but I have to say, I’ve not taken one photo that actually does this justice. It is such a gorgeous blend of warm colours. I could NOT find my cat this morning. It made me really nervous because he’s almost 18 (human) years old and I read that when cats are about to die they hide. So, naturally I freaked out. Turns out he was hiding in my closet napping.

I have spent now 5 years as a Single Mama. I have a child who is not insane. I am not bankrupt. I have not traded Mr. Wrong for a slew of sugar daddies, dimwits or thugs. And, despite the spam of “Meet Men Now” that clouds my life – despite the scramble here and scramble there, juggle this and juggle that – I am happy.

But I have not seen so many happy stories. I have seen the ugly, the bad, the wrecked, the inscrutable, the sad and the just plain horrific. Being happy as a Single Mama does not fit the stereotypes of Single Mamadom in a patriarchal society. So there isn’t much information out there supporting the reality of Happy Single Mamas. Or how to BE a Happy Single Mama.

It seems that I need to delineate, exactly, how to BE a Single Mama. Or at least how I do it. I can’t guarantee happiness. Results may vary.

But I can – at least – advise avoiding a few traps that may leave you broken, bruised, or confused.

Stop waiting for Prince Charming. Amy Tan wrote that there are the types of turtles who feed on swallowing people’s tears. If someone gets a rush from playing the role of riding up on a white horse and saving you from the weight of your life – be wary. Be very, very wary. Or rather, be very, very afraid. Or rather, lets just break it down like this: JUST SAY NO.

Skip the event, eat the ice cream. Don’t over-analyze. Do nap. Let a beautician wash your hair. Let a masseuse rub your back. Drive through the full service lane at the gas station. Get a pedicure. Even if you are vegan – at least get an unsweetened iced tea at the drive through window. Outsource. Don’t think. Breathe. If you have to hang your head between your knees, remember to breathe.

Get your finances in order. Read Beth Kobliner. Read Ariel Gore – especially the Hip Mama Survival Guide. Use what is available to you. Work it out. Use every any governmental assistance you qualify for – and then work. Work, work, work.

Talk to Big Brother. Institutions are created to serve the public. They don’t make you institutionalized – unless your head is a sponge and your spine is a feather boa. Whatever you may think of the government, big government, this organization, that organization – you can be in this world without being of this world. Public resources are there for a reason. Welfare. Consumer Credit Counseling. You are a part of the public. You need resources. Go for it. Two more words: YWCA. YMCA. (OK those were acronyms, not words. I know.)

Dating: Not a requirement. Fun idea. If only because you are entitled to do it. But you are also entitled to buy every widget in Walmart that you can. You are also entitled to eat pig skin until you vomit. Entitlement is a tricky thing.

You are entitled to date. You are not required to date.
That should be a relief. A relief indeed.

Your child or children have one childhood. Just one. And you are providing it. Weigh wisely. Home Alone is a bad movie. It’s not an option. Please don’t get your options from movies or TV. Thank you.

Surround yourself with people who respect your time and your responsibilities as a mother. If someone disrespects you once – Gone! You simply cannot make time for someone who does not respect your time, your responsibilities, your family or your priorities. You cannot let anyone waste your time. You have precious little time to begin with. And it’s all already allocated . Remember this rule: One Loser per Lifetime is the Limit.

Popcorn and pancakes for dinner and pyjamas all day on Saturday is not just all right. It’s your right. The 4 basic food groups should go into your little person or little people every day. But no-one ever said you have to sit up at the table and use the right fork.
Fork that.

Find an anthem. Or two. Or twelve. “Like Babygirl, I ain’t got a motor boat but I can float your boat. We can live without the punks just you and me.”

Don’t Worry. Be Happy.

Remember nothing but happiness. Mathilde Urrutia, the last wife of Pablo Neruda was raised by a poor widow in Southern Chile. Her mother ran a rooming house, grew food in her garden and sewed her dresses from flour sacks. How does Mathilde remember her childhood?

Roisin Murphy & Klimt; that’s what I’m up for today

Quadre de Kustav Klimt. És una de les més impressionants i conegudes obres de l’autor. Vaig utilitzar pintura de color or.

Economia de fila e de tempo. Já estamos com entradas dos museus que queremos visitar em Paris compradas, e de Viena também. Ah, vou ver o Klimt no Belvedere! (suspiros).

Claro que também vimos os guias, um deles já peguei emprestado para Viena. Mas as melhores dicas eu peguei conversando com pessoas que já estiveram lá ou que, no caso de Paris, são “da gema”, nascidos e criados. Dicas assim fazem a maior diferença. Mas vou guardar detalhes para a volta, assim descrevo as minhas impressões.

Hoje peguei uma dica de restaurante para um Coq au Vin em ambiente agradável e com preço acessível. Vai a Paris? Anote então também: “Chez Rene”, na Boulevard Saint-Germain 14. A dica veio de um amigo bem exigente quando o assunto é gastronomia.

E minha dica importante é verificar a programação cultural da cidade onde você vai, de preferência com antecedência. Foi assim que descobri que a Royal Philarmonic vai tocar em Viena no dia que chegaremos lá, em única apresentação. E nós que já gostamos de música clássica, e o Rafa que adora violinos, não podíamos perder uma das maiores orquestras do mundo com um dos melhores violinistas do mundo na atualidade como solista: o Joshua Bell.

Essa dica vale para programação cultural em geral. Não só para clássicos. Se você gosta de show de bandas internacionais, ou eventos como Stomp ou Cirque du Soleil, saiba que as entradas para tais eventos costumam ser bem mais baratas do que quando eles acontecem no Brasil. Mas programe-se com antecedência, porque entradas para esses eventos esgotam rápido.

E agora, que já passa da meia-noite aqui, posso contar: falta um dia! Eu na verdade ainda preciso dormir duas vezes sem o Rafa, mas isso também passa rápido.

Uno di questi cordoni romani per Federico Fellini è la morte con cui i romani per il regista della “Dolce Vita” «sembrano intrattenere un rapporto confidenziale» come scrive nella sua autobiografia “Fare un film”. E a Roma, nell’ormai non più periferica San Lorenzo, esiste una città nella città, il cimitero comunale monumentale Campo Verano, detto più semplicemente il Verano. Monumentale per due ragioni: oggi agli occhi degli abitanti per le sue dimensioni, ma anche perchè è un museo a cielo aperto dove più che loculi di deve parlare di sepolcri. Qui, in occasione del Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma, l’Ama, l’agenzia per la raccolta dei rifiuti della capitale, organizza un ciclo di nove visite guidate gratuite dal titolo “Roma e le storie del Cinema”. Si comincia oggi con partenza alle ore 10-12-15 dal piazzale del Verano.

Dal ritratto di Fellini mancherà la Magnani, sepolta nella cappella di famiglia del cimitero di San Felice Circeo, ma Sordi e Fabrizi ci sono e non solo loro. Sul sito dell’Ama è possibile vedere la mappa delle visite ma cercando bene in rete si scopre che sono molti di più di quelli segnalati i personaggi legati al mondo del cinema che riposano nel grande cimitero. La passeggiata comincia dai tempi dei fratelli Lumiére con la visita al sepolcro del trasformista Leopoldo Fregoli, pioniere del cinema, figlio del maggiordomo dei conti Panciani, l’«uomo folla», come lo definì Jules Claretie. Fregoli fu amico dei Lumière e autore delle prime pellicole cinematografiche circolanti in Italia. Poi i futuristi Anton Giulio e Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia, l’uno regista, critico cinematografico, gallerista di Balla, de Chirico, Sironi, Klimt e Schiele, l’altro fotografo delle dive del cinema, regista dei telefoni bianchi, e di quel “Totò le moko”, dove l’amore trasformava Totò nel bandito della casbah.
Ci sono i divi di un tempo, Salvator Amedeo Buffa alias Amedeo Nazzari, Alida Valli (vero nome Alida Maria Altenburger), i registi del neorealismo Rossellini e De Sica, il western-spaghetti di Sergio Corbucci, i poliziotteschi di Bruno Corbucci, c’è Luigi Zampa, il regista del “Vigile”, dove Sordi sfoggiava la sua divisa lucida quasi marziana da vigile urbano, e Nanni Loy. I grandi mattatori: Vittorio Gassmann, Alberto Sordi, Eduardo De Filippo, Peppino De Filippo, Marcello Mastroianni, Nino Saturnino Manfredi e Aldo Fabrizi. Ci sono sceneggiatori come Sergio Amidei (“La vita agra”) e il doppiatore Ferruccio Amendola. Ci sono Massimo Girotti, Alessandro Blasetti ed Elio (Eraclio) Petri, Checco Durante, e la sora Lella, Ciccio Ingrassia e Camillo Mastrocinque, Isa Miranda e Alberto Moravia, Rina Morelli e Paolo Panelli, Ettore Petrolini e Antonio Pietrangeli, Mario Riva e Paolo Stoppa, Luchino Visconti, una delle regine del melodramma, Milly Vitale.
Il Verano restituisce, magari con qualche errore, un elenco etererogeno di talenti e destini. Il cinema, un’arte così giovane e già con così tanti caduti sul campo, ha trovato un’altra Cinecittà.

Da hatte Sunny eine wunderbare Idee: Den Color Key dafür  zu benutzen, um “…alles ausblenden, was unwichtig bzw. nur Kulisse ist…” und somit Kunst sichtbarer zu machen.

Das hat mich inspiriert, eines meiner Bilder aus der Serie “30 Tage – 1 Objekt” auf diese Weise zu bearbeiten.

So fällt der Blick gleich auf das Meisterwerk von Klimt und das Auge wird nicht von der Kulisse abgelenkt.

Raviolis cocidos en agua de rosas con un toque de basílico sobre pluma de ave del paraíso. Homenaje a las fuentes de Picasso. (“Composición oval con colores planos” de Piet Mondrian. 1914).

Los postres.

Manzanas al vino blanco rebajado con agua de roca. Aromas de corolas y sombras. (“Bodegón con frutero” de Cèzanne. 1880)

Tableta de chocolate puro montada en yema de avestruz sobre pan de oro. Ralladura de tomate. (“Círculo amarillo” de Moholy-Nagy, 1921)

Permanezco en la silla de The Modern enfrentada al patio ajardinado tras los cristales. Mis manos trasladan pedazos de verdura y pasta a la garganta que se abre y cierra mecánicamente. Al alcanzar el paladar las texturas se transforman en líneas, círculos y pinceladas que inundan mi mente desde la mañana. La planta quinta del MoMA. Un universo de obras perfectas. Imágenes que me acompañan en la vigilia y el sueño.
