“I’m completely bushed”, I said emphatically. We had just spent two and half weeks tracing the Klondike gold rush trail from Alaska to the Yukon, testing ourselves against the elements and spending 14 nights in a micro-mini tent. Our adventure began with a 33-mile ascent from sea to summit on the Chilkoot Trail, followed by a 200 mile canoe trip on Yukon River from Whitehorse to Carmacks, in remote wilderness with limited road access. Ending our trip back in Whitehorse we were ready to pamper ourselves.

Historical Guest House B&B

Instead of usual non-descript, functional hotels we’ve stayed in previously, this time we treated ourselves to the Historical Guest House Bed and Breakfast. This charming B&B, was built with hand hewn-logs in 1907 by brothers Mike and Tony Cyr, who themselves had hiked over the Chilkoot as gold seekers. Tony and his wife, along with their son Laurent lived there for many years. This would have absolutely no significance to the average American, but we had pulled our canoe up on the riverbank to enjoy a sun dappled picnic at the site of Laurent Cyr’s gold dredge a few days earlier and felt a special connection to sleep in the same house as the Cyrs after following in their footsteps and paddles.

Takhini Hot Springs

Feeling chilled to the bone after the last few cool, drizzly days on the river we headed to the outskirts of town to the Takhini Hot Springs for a long soak. Natural hot springs feed a large pool at the deep end which is quite warm compared to the shallow end. We eased into the warm water feeling the aches and pains from the last two weeks of intense physical effort dissolve, and our disposition relaxed.

Klondike Salmon & Rib House

Back in town we were more than ready for our first non-freeze dried meal in many days. We proceeded to our favorite restaurant, the Klondike Salmon and Rib House, where we often eat when we’re in town, sometimes every evening meal. I devoured my first salad in days savoring each crunchy bite of fresh greens, sweet tomatoes and crisp cucumbers lightly coated in vinaigrette. The fresh arctic char, grilled to perfection, was delectable accompanied by creamy mashed potatoes and crisp sautéed vegetables. We washed it down with Yukon Gold ale and had just enough room to share a huge slice of homemade berry pie. We reminisced about the highlights of our wilderness adventure, debating the size of the bears and lynx we saw and made plans to complete the next 200 miles of the river trip from Carmacks to Dawson in two years.

Buckets from the Cyr dredge, Yukon River

Since it was stayed light until 11 pm we strolled 2 blocks over to the river to have another look at the waterway that had provided so many memories and dreams for the future. Returning to town we visited Mac’s Fireweed Bookstore, a place that has absorbed many vacation dollars as they have an outstandingly extensive collection of Canadiana. We selected a few autobiographies to round out our collection of stories of the north, and headed for the Cyr homestead, holding hands and feeling lucky that by sharing adventures we strengthened our connections with the north, and,

My Poem:
Yeah, I know. Maybe it’s nothing ‘professional’, but I felt like posting it. Just because.

“I don’t know what to name this.”
BY ALEX VIOLET

These are the days I want to scream my heart into a microphone
To make people feel like they’re not the only one
The world might not fall at your feet
But you have the power to help up everyone you meet
As long as you’ve got a voice
You have some sort of choice
You can watch the world pass out of your sight
Or you can buckle down and hang on tight
No matter where you are, you’re going to find someone who’s willing to put up a bigger argument
But as long as you believe it, you can withstand anything, no matter how many a dent
You need to stay true to your beliefs
Put aside all of your griefs
As long as you have who you are
Know that you are a star

-FIN-

It’s been a really hectic last week of school for me, but overall I’d say it was worth it.

MONDAY: vocals practice through lots of the day (we got out of our other classes) and a little into lunch and so I missed the students’ council meeting at lunch and had to have the students’ council president fill me in, and let me know how I was supposed to help out with the Christmas auction which would be on Wednesday. I had to tell her I couldn’t help/clean up any after school on Wednesday because I had a youth council meeting @ 3:30 at the YMCA. (School ends @ 2:30 for me, but my bus drops me off at around 3:00, which is also when Corner Gas starts on one of those really big number channels.)

TUESDAY: vocals practice through the entire day and the entire lunch I think. We were signed out of the class at 12:00 though, (my school’s lunch period goes from 11:00-12:00; and everyone shares this lunch hour. Also, classes were smushed and cut off early that day because of the Olympic Torch run going through my town, so my class after lunch was mathematics) so me and my friend NAMELESS sat around in the cafeteria. She was playing my Animal Crossing game on her DS and I might’ve been playing solitaire (they call it ‘klondike’, I don’t know why) on her iPod. I was trying to convince her to watch the torch go by with me, saying things like “I don’t want to see it all alone,” and “You’ll regret it for the rest of your life if you don’t go, and if you do go, you get to tell your grandchildren about it someday, you get to tell everyone ‘I WAS THERE!’” and then I think I eventually got her by telling her that we either go accross the street to buy some onion rings from the fast food place (I hadn’t eaten and our cafeteria had closed by then) or we see the torch run. We killed time outside playing in the snow and making sound-wave-looking patterns in the snow with our footprints and taking silly pictures.
So we saw the torch run. It was LIFE-CHANGING. At least I believe so. They were giving out free coca-colas on a float infront of the torch runner and I didn’t get one. That was okay, because I had videoed the torch runner and I also got two free flags (one extra for my little brother) from one of the teachers who was passing by me and NAMELESS when we were sitting on a bench outside the school office waiting for a ride home.
Once I got home I lied down and had a nap until my mum came home from work and told me she bought me a shirt for the concert that night I was in with the rest of my vocals class and a couple of people in the school band.
So I arrived at the school auditorium around 5:00 (the concert was from around 7:00 ’til like 8:45, so I missed my pathfinders Christmas party) with some McDonald’s fries and a coca-cola in my hand and waited around while the instrumental people did their thing. I sat beside NAMELESS (who still had my Animal Crossing game) and played solitaire/klondike on her iPod. I think we conversed, but I don’t recall. Maybe we were out of conversation seeing as we were hanging out the whole day.
Then we did the concert and I rocked it. Bohemian Rhapsody was the last song. (Which I’m sure you’ll agree: is very fun to sing.) After the concert my mother told me that I was a better singer than most of the people that did solos. (I did backup only.) I already knew that, but I’m glad I heard it from my mother too.

WEDNESDAY: Forgot my lunch at school for the first time since third grade. So I ended up walking around the school with my friend Smiley all lunch hour. I was under the impression that I was supposed to help out with the Christmas auction at lunch, but that morning or so someone said to me it was going to be on Thursday instead, so I looked around checking all the places that I’ve ever been told to meet the student’s council in (the auditorium, the front foyer, the student council room, etc.) and eventually gave up.
After school I got home and turned the TV to a Corner Gas rerun while I prepared myself for the meeting and quickly stopped by the corner store to get some food since I was hungry since I missed lunch.
Then I walked to the YMCA for the Youth Council meeting which is a lot further than I thought. I thought I lived right around the corner from them so I gave myself ten minutes to walk there. But I think I took fifteen or twenty to get there. Oh yeah, and it was very windy and cold out and I forgot my hat and mits. I remembered my Secret Santa gift though, and it was a very soft burgundy blanket. I got a Rubik’s cube and a picture frame in return.
I walked home.

THURSDAY: Was not bad, I thought it would be the easiest day of the week since I didn’t have anything schedueled for the day.
Well, except for the Christmas Auction for either the whole morning or the whole afternoon (I forget) but that was during school hours and it was record-breaking with the $ we raised. Besides, my job was simple, I just passed cue cards to the auctioneer to tell him what item was next. Besides that, nothing really.
But then I was going to work on two assignments due during lunch. But then I forgot. So to stop myself from worrying I stayed after school to finish them in the library so I could just ask the office ladies to put my finished work in the teacher’s mailbox so I would not be late handing it in, technically.
I finished my work sometime between 3:30-3:45 just as the librarian told me she was going to close up the library. So I printed off my pages and looked them over real quick and left with my stuff. I went up to my locker and got the remainder of my stuff, then went down to the office and called my mother to pick me up. Now, my mom I know doesn’t usually walk in the door until 4, I’m pretty sure, and my brother (who is eleven) walks home, and that takes him until a little before 4, like around 3:50 or something like that. I wasn’t totally baffled when I got the answering machine, so I just left a message for someone to come pick me up ASAP and then I sat down on the bench with a book ready (Predator’s Gold by Philip Reeve: it’s the sequel to Mortal Engines which we’d just finished reading in Science class) and waited a very long time. It was around 4:15 or 4:20 or something when I called again since everyone should have been home by then. I got the machine, so I left about the same message and went and sat down and read again. I kept getting distracted from my book though since people actually were showing up for their late afterschool activities. I got a little worried around 4:40 and contemplated calling one more time and/or walking home. But since it’s the winter, it was getting darker out. I got up to go call again and ended up walking out the door at 4:45 or so. I kept walking down the street, and discovered that I do actually know the general route to getting home.
Walking out was a very bad idea, though, since apparently my mother and brother showed up five minutes after asking people like the janitor if they’d seen me.
I don’t know how long I’d taken but I was almost near the city hall and my legs were numb as were my hands, even though I was wearing gloves. I remembered my mum had once said that there was a ‘courtesy phone’ at the city hall: a phone I could use for free to call her to pick me up. So I went into the city hall and used the phone. I called my mum (got the darn machine again), told her I was okay, that I started to walk home, that my limbs were numb, and that I’d wait a while for her to pick me up then I’d call someone else to pick me up if she didn’t show after a while. I stood by the door, looking out the window as so many people walked by me, none of them asking me if I was alright, and few of them acknowledging me. There were actually two kids who must’ve been about 8 or 9 dressed in ski masks playing with walkie talkies, and one of them stood a few feet away from me, testing out all the channels on the walkie talkie, repeating “Over, over, over, over,” and over again hoping to get a response.
Eventually, I went over to the courtesy phone and pulled out an old permission form from pathfinders that had the pathfinder leader’s phone number on it and called her, remembering that a year or a few ago she’d told all of us pathfinders that just in case we were in a sticky situation, she’d be there. I explained my whole situation, trying not to cry the whole time (it showed in my voice) and asked if there was any way that she would come pick me up. She verified that I was at the city hall and told me she’d be right there. I thanked her and the phone call ended. I thanked God a few times that I had pathfinders, and better yet that I just so happened to have the outdated forms in my pocket. When she picked me up I kept on thanking her and I explained in more detail my situation and she asked questions about it and I answered. When we drove into my parking lot outside my apartment, she told me she would walk in with me to make sure I was all safe and she did and I was. My mum was home and she buzzed us up. She explained how when she drove into the parking lot, Buddy (little brother) ran out to the car and explained that I left a message that I was at the school, so they went out to get me and showed up at the school and when they couldn’t find me they got worried. They checked a couple other places like the Wal-Mart (I don’t know why I’d be there if I was desperate; no offence Wal-Mart) and then they went home to see if I called. I had just buzzed up as my mum was listening to the answering machine messages.
Knowing I was safe, the pathfinder leader went and got my Secret Santa gift and gave it to me. It consisted of a mug with hot choco. packages, marshmallows, a leather bookmark, chocolates, a hair thing, six of the Best Cookies You Will Ever Eat Besides My Mother’s., and a couple other things I don’t recall off the top of my head. I thanked her again several times and we wished each other Merry Christmas.
I had soup that night which I believe was suitable.

FRIDAY: Yesterday was a relief. There was smushed classes again since the Christmas Assembly was in the afternoon (my school always has really good and hilarious holiday assemblies; this year they had some students have a rap contest and a group of teachers were impersonating how students do things just to frustrate teachers, like forgetting to bring a pencil to class then forgetting their book after they just got back from their locker and sleeping in class and a bunch of ordinary things like that. But it was funny when the teachers did it.) I was supposed to get out of Math class to practice singing with my vocals class because we were in the assembly, but we were having a Christmas party and I already brought a bag of that Smartfood popcorn for it, and I just didn’t feel like missing it anymore. I also learned that my math grade has been brought up to a 61%. This is good by me, since I had a 58% last I checked. Last year I walked into the exam with a 64% and pulled of an 80% in the exam, then ended up with an overall 70%, which was good enough to go into academic grade 10 math (the smart kids class) this year. But now I’m not sure I’ll pull off another 80% on the exam (as much as I hope) so I’m trying to pull up my grade now as much as possible. We just started trigonometry which is all about triangles. Which is actually a huge relief.
Sorry, I went on rambling a little there.
The assembly was great and I got to go right home after school and the bus driver was giving out little chocolates to us for Christmas. I got two when everyone else got one (when I got on the bus, I remembered I was going to have a student council meeting, so I explained that and told her I wouldn’t be getting back on the bus. So she gave me a chocolate. So then I realized it was cancelled, and got back on the bus, telling her it was cancelled. When we got off the bus I told her I already got one and she said “Have another one!” so I said thank you and took another one.) so I gave one to my mother and one to my brother.

SATURDAY: Today we finally got the Christmas tree up (ours is of the pretend variety since my mother’s allergic to the real variety – plus it’s better for the environment since we don’t have to go and cut down a tree every year) and I’ve been in my pajamas all day. I’ve spent a few hours writing this entry and thank you SO much if you’re still reading it.

Have a wonderful, awesomazing, magnificent, miraculous, and memorable holiday!

Merry Holidays,

Alex Violet.

Extremes – yin and yang, two fish swimming in opposite directions, you get the idea – is one of the

Extremes – yin and yang, two fish swimming in opposite directions, you get the idea – is one of the best ways to describe Lady Gaga’s style. This woman will wear anything a designer puts in front of her and own it. So, we can only begin to describe what a let down her upcoming January cover of Elle is looking like a typical pop tart gracing the cover of a magazine. Yawn. (Include image of Elle cover)

It must be said that she still looks fierce – consider your subject. But it’s way more fun to think of Gaga in full frontal smooch red lips, thick black liner and outrageously delicious bubble dress and/or hair bow (verdict is still out on the latter). However, it is nice to see Gaga play nice once in a while. She’s in tune with the extremes displayed on the catwalk forecasting Winter 2009/Spring 2010 beauty that is literally black and white: smoldering smoky eye and almost naked no-mascara lids.

I personally can’t leave the house without mascara on since my long lashes are hidden by blonde color that leaves me looking lash-less. A personal hang up? You betcha. So I’ll start with the smoky eyes first. If you’re a newbie who fears the raccoon, Benefit’s Smokin’ Eyes Sexy Eye & Brow Makeover Kit will guide you to your best look-at-me lids.

Badgley-Mischka Spring 2010 collection boasted a natural palette of barely rosy cheeks, pearly eye shadow and skin-toned lips. This look is absolutely refreshing, especially after a long recession-filled winter, so long as you exfoliate and conceal like a blending queen. For already naturally pale skin add a pop of color to your lids. Our personal favorite is Nars Cream Eyeshadow in Klondike for a subtle mint pearl color.

If you feel armored behind fluttery mascara lashes like yours truly then go for brown instead of very black to stay au naturale. Try cult fave DiorShow Mascara in Chestnut.

Said in my deepest Santa voice: “Hey Hey Hey! Happy Wednesday!”

Welcome to Whatever Wednesday, where we have NO IDEA what we’ll learn about strangers sitting on the other side of their screens in this vast universal internet.

How’s this work? Well, I’ll start with a question, which the first commenter will answer, then will ask another question. The next commenter will answer that question, then ask another question. The next commenter will answer THAT question, then ask another question. And so on and so forth until it all ends in a rousingly quiet and unnoticed ending.

Starter question: In honor of how frigidly cold it is in my world today – what would you do for a Klondike bar?

How often have you been rushing to get home only to be “frozen” in the supermarket trying to decide what to grab in order to satiate the growling within? No longer will this be an issue. Keep in mind that for many of these it represents the brand and not necessarily the exact product. Case in point….most any Banquet meal will effectively “cleanse” your system, not just their Meat Loaf Meal. Or feel free to substitute your favorite flavor of Mrs. Smith’s pie in place of apple.

If you still need a little help at the supermarket there is a app for that. GroceryWiz will help you make lists of the items you need and print out a nice little list.

Klondike engaged consumers in the “What Would You Do for a Klondike Bar?” video contest to refresh consumer connection with the well-known Unilever Klondike brand. Consumers were asked to create and submit their own video showing what they would do for a Klondike Bar. To support and drive entries for the video contest, Klondike built an integrated viral strategy utilizing new social media tools.

Klondike leveraged the celebrity power and comedic talent of Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island crew to generate both traditional and non-traditional media buzz. The digital film group created four viral videos to inspire consumers to get in on the action and launch the viral campaign. It also generated an authentic approach to spreading the word about the contest. Instead of circulating an advertisement, the viral video was an outlet consumers wanted to view and pass along to their friends because it was both humorous and included a celebrity. Case Study

Was war geschehen?

When I was little, there were two commercials that I really loved: The fig newton ad with crazy came

When I was little, there were two commercials that I really loved: The fig newton ad with crazy camera angles that showed kids (on a playground, I believe) breaking apart fig newtons and then putting them back together (presumably in order to show the television audience how moist and chewy they were), and the catchy “What Would You Do for a Klondike Bar?” commercial.

On the few occasions wherein I was actually allowed to eat prepackaged sweets, I sometimes indulged in a few bites of a Klondike bar. Oh how that chocolatey-coated ice cream tasted so friggin’ good….

During a recent trip to my local grocer, I made a courageous dash through the frozen dessert section in an attempt to beat some lady with a full cart to the express line (yes, my local grocer allows people with more than 10 items in the express line which obviously defeats the purpose but I digress). But I was summoned by a higher power, my sweet tooth, and that courageous dash quickly turned into prolonged weakness. Dove ice cream bars, tubs of alluring, empty calories (which have drastically whittled down to less than 1.5 quarts while maintaining the same price as their half gallon predecessors), and one of my favorites-the seasonal flavor of pumpkin pie ice cream.

Yet it was that polar bear on the packaging of the Klondike bars who made the strongest impression. My eyes beamed with excitement, and I actually felt the onset of drool while thinking, “Wow, I haven’t had one of those in over 20 years! And what’s this? They’re on sale, too?! Well I surely can’t pass up a bargain….”

When I got home and tasted one of the bars, I nearly gagged. The chocolate no longer tasted chocolatey. At 5 oz. and a whopping 490 calories, I expected real chocolate-not some artificial crap that people with inferior taste buds tolerate. But my spidey sense should’ve forewarned me when I read the packaging: “Now! Thicker chocolatey shell.” Notice the word chocolately. This isn’t indicative of real chocolate. I’d been had by an inanimate polar bear on a pretty silver wrapper and the Unilever corporation. You deceptive betches, you….

Why must companies play semantics, especially when it comes to food? All-natural isn’t synonymous with organic, real (insert flavor here) taste doesn’t mean that artificial ingredients haven’t been used, etc. Consumers shouldn’t be forced to decode product labels.

We hate Michael Ian Black and we hate the post Mad Pimpin.’ 1. We hate that you’re a lit

We hate Michael Ian Black and we hate the post Mad Pimpin.’

1. We hate that you’re a little depressed with your career right now, Michael. Here’s why. We didn’t hate “Stella.” We didn’t hate “Michael and Michael Have Issues.” And, we most certainly didn’t hate the new Klondike Bar commercials. You’re on a good run, probably a better run than Sarah Silverman and, to boot, you’re not forced to watch Jimmy Kimmel every night. You’re on a way better run than David Cross who – let’s be frank, here – outthought his own career. And, you’re doing way, way, way better than Jeff Dunham. He got his own show, sure, but he still has to look himself in the mirror and admit that he stuffs his hand up a puppet’s ass for a laugh.

Does Dane Cook have his own children's book? He could knit a sweater a night with all of the co-ed wool thrown at him after a show, but can he tuck his kids in at night with his own children's book?

2. We hate that you admit that you don’t know what you’re doing:

The other thing is a vague unease with my entire career. I can define the unease like this: ‘I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing.’

If you don’t know what you’re doing, then you tacitly admit that VH1 didn’t know what it was doing by having you in all those “I Love the (insert decade here)’s” episodes and, without without this important television, we wouldn’t know what childhood nostalgia to remember. When shopping online for the hippest message tees or watching “Family Guy,” this knowledge is vital.

3. We hated Levar Burton during “LeWar,” but we must admit that we began following both of you at that time. This was during our Twitter honeymoon when we added everyone whose name we recognized. We are now at the seven-year itch stage with Twitter and peruse Twitter divorce lawyers while at work.

Blow away, sir.

4. We hate Hollywood, too. We think Hollywood is responsible for Sarah Palin’s career. We’re not sure how, but it likely involves the Illuminati, orbital mind control lasers and some faceless studio exec with an idea he stole from someone intelligent during the writer’s strike.

Those Philistines didn't deserve a second season, Michael.

5. We hate seeing you like this. And yet, we can’t help but note that we have no such problems with our career and this is probably because we are calm, level-headed goyum, just like that protestant Craig Ferguson. Look how far Christianity got him. Not too shabby!

Based upon the book by Jack London, this movie is about a wolf-dog hybrid befriended by a young gold miner in Alaska. I video recorded this movie several weeks ago from a cable channel during a “dog marathon” weekend event. This movie exceeded my expectations in many ways. I have not read the book, so I didn’t have any idea of the storyline. We start out in Skagway with Jack Conroy, son of Scott Conroy, who has left his mining claim to his son. Jack finds two men who will take him along with them. They are hauling a man’s body back to his claim to be buried there. Alexander Larson had also made sure that Jack’s father, Scott, had been buried at his claim several years before. During the journey by dogsled to the claim, one of the men is killed by wolves. There are two story lines in this movie: the humans and the wolves.

The wolves who attack the third man are part of a pack that includes a female wolf-hybrid. Her pup, Mitah or White Fang, is orphaned when she is killed by Alex’s bullet trying to protect his partner. The older partner runs off anyway after his best dog and is killed by the wolf pack. The wolf-dog that is orphaned (White Fang) meets up with Jack briefly at a watering spot. Eventually, an Inuit chief captures the wolf pup and trains it as a work dog. The Inuit in this film view dogs as work animals, rather than companion animals. When Alex and Jack travel up the river in their boat, they run into Mitah again at the chief’s village.

I don’t want to spoil the movie for others. Suffice to say, Jack and White Fang meet up several times again. They seem to form a lifelong friendship that is the result of a deep connection between this man and this wolf-dog. It is uncanny and quite believable for anyone who has owned companion animals, especially dogs. My dog, Amazonia, who lived 16 years (1988-2004) as a pup would stand by the door and just wait for me to take her outside. She didn’t require housebreaking; she communicated with me non-verbally. The connection between Jack and White Fang is similar.

I know you need money to support Club Penguin, but they’ve taken it too far. Its all or nothing now. That includes:

The members-only rooms

The member badge on your player card

The membership advertising on the Start screen

The things you can only get if you are a member, which actually have an effect on how many coins you can earn. Like the toboggan for sled racing, the CD tracks for the dance game, the wakeboards and surfboards, etc.

You can only be a real ninja if you are a member.

It’s sappier than maple syrup. Seriously.

They’re slowly tying Disney the Channel into Club Penguin.

Most of the users need an attitude adjustment.

No free items.

All the rare stuff is being brought back.

Horrid parties.

They’re in it for the money.

Ninjas. We spend a good two years hoping for something mysterious, like a ninja. Putting it in the paper? EPIC. FAIL.

You’re squeezing ideas dry. Plays repeated on and on.

Hit and Miss. Mostly miss. You get these AMAZING chances to do awesome things, but they just ruin them.

The entire “like us or else” thing. Pililoni often gets frustrating responses to his emails. They’re dodging the questions. Are they hiding something?

The ridiculousness of membership costs (like I’m buying one, but still.) From what I’ve heard, they claim it’s expensive to pay for flash, but it’s actually very cheap. O.o

That’s all I can think of. Add more if you want. This is sort of like Zehroy’s post, but its a set of demands to keep in mind for future rebellions.

Have a nice day,

What would you do for a Klondike Bar?

A Fayette County teenager took the advertising slogan a little too far, landing himself and an accomplice in juvenile detention after police allege the pair were caught burglarizing a house.

Two Uniontown police officers went to a house on Braddock Avenue at 3:13 p.m. Wednesday after a witness saw two juveniles knock on the door, then wipe off their handprints when no one answered.

When officers Jonathan Grabiak and Jamie Holland arrived, they noticed two teenagers leaving the house from a basement stairwell, according to a police report. The teens ran when they saw the officers, but the officers were able to apprehend both.

One of the juveniles was carrying a box of Klondike ice cream bars. The other had a cell phone, $100 cash and a novelty $3 bill, according to police.

When police entered the house, they found it had been ransacked, with dresser drawers pulled out and closet doors opened. Someone had forcibly entered through the basement door, police said.

The homeowner was not home at the time. She later told officers the ice cream bars, phone, cash and $3 bill belonged to her. The items were returned to the woman.

The two suspects, both age 16, were taken to the Westmoreland County Juvenile Detention Center. They have been charged as juveniles with burglary, theft and criminal mischief, police said.

———————

I think it says a lot about the thieves that they literally tried to steal fake money. Maybe next time they will jump the Monopoly man and go on a Candyland shopping spree. So the question has finally been answered – What would you do for a Klondike bar? –Felony theft.

Wednesday – Chicken, Alaska

On the road again, that’d be a good name for a song, eh!

Well, I finally broke camp at Dawson City around 9am, this place is like a crab pot, once in, it is hard to get out! But, I managed to get away from the campground and have a hearty breakfast at Klondike Kate’s, ham and eggs, brilliant!

Then I headed out of town the wrong way, for a reason though as there is a place where the only surviving gold dredge is located. On the way I stopped at an info board on the area, I like these things as I then don’t have to do anything, just take the photo and you can read it for yourself, or not, as you prefer

Then I spotted this sign, dammit, it is Wednesday so I am too early and I really wanted to see this thing, never mind, head back to town, and the visitors centre for a look.

Well, what a stuff up, when I got there, they told me the tours are from 10-11 and the last one starts at 11am, in ½ an hour, when I showed them the times in the above photo, they were as confused as I was!! Now I had to haul arse as it was about a half hour ride to get there, down some real dusty and twisty roads as well, hard to keep the speed up actually.

But, I got there with time to spare and bought my ticket. This thing is huge! The lady told us a lot about the system and the people, mostly kids working their way through college. The noise was bad, a lot of people got seasick because of the shuddering action. The only reason the dredge was shut down when the temperature reached -40, was because that was when steel shattered and was expensive to repair. Here are some photos and some info boards of this huge monster!

The bucket chain was taken off prior to repairs but mining shut down and it never moved again from the swamp.

In the last photo above, the screen in the middle of the room is the only heater on board, it is solely for the use of keeping the grease soft, not for the people!

After the hour tour it was on my bike. I did not have a major long day as I was just planning on crossing the border into the USA state of Alaska, but via the Top of the World Highway, a road to be ridden

It was back down the gravel to the end of town where the ferry was, there is no bridge for this part of the road, but the ferry runs 24/7 and is free, in no time I was on board and heading west! As you can see from my TomTom, it is only a short run of 168km to Chicken where I would be staying, I had been told many times to stop at this place for a beer, who am I to argue with the multitudes?

The gravel was a bit loose on the surface, but I was getting used to the squirming of the bike and ignored it for the most part. The road as promised went across the ridges of the mountain, rather than the valleys, but the views were a bit less than normal due to all the smoke.

There were paved bits, but they were worse than the dirt as the pavement was broken and potholed badly! I preferred the dirt, I could relax a bit and sit down.

It was not long, say about an hour, that I reached the border area and here was some info on the highway at last, I thought I had missed it

Then after this I headed to the border, the usual questions, any guns, any mace, any bear spray etc, then hand back the passport and have a nice day, easy as

Now I had not far to run, but I had been told and now I believed it, the road turned to crap on this side of the border, big rocks sticking through the surface! But, I managed to add another state to my list and learned some more information on Caribous.

A few miles of crap road, bumpy and nasty I arrived at Border, aptly named I guess, I did not stop, except for this photo of a trappers cabin.

A bit more crap road, corrugated and dusty before arriving in Chicken, a bit further away than I thought. But, of course I am now back in the USA, everything is in miles again, not kms like I had been used to in Canada!

I pulled up at the campground, where if you fill your tank it is a free camp site, so I did that.

I spent a bit of time at the front of the cafe as there was internet which meant I could post a day, the connection kept dropping out though, mind you so did the power, the genset was constantly tripping power off, but I managed it eventually by about 7.30pm, now time for a beer. This meant a bit of a hike up the hill to the town of Chicken itself. I had stuffed up, I should have ridden here, then grabbed a free tent site next to the pub, oh well, never mind a bit of a walk is good for me.

This pub, well basically all these building are owned by one lady who put the town back on the map. People started to leave hats and stuff from the ceiling and walls, this then turned a bit different and if you could entice a lady out of her knickers, they would be stuffed down a canon barrel and shot into the air, the remnants would then be hung from the wall, whatever That’d be all the tatty bits you can see

The times of business sign on the front door was a laugh and this is where I ended up posting my calling card, I could not find a space inside

One of the locals called Wade was the scrub cutter operator I had passed coming into town, we had a chat and a few beers.

He told me why the road was so bad on this side of the border. Money! Yep, there has not been any money spent on the road to improve it since it was scratched out a long time ago. The Canadians had modified the actual road path, plus added a lot of material to the surface and maintain it, while in the US, the road has nothing left to cover it and when they grade it, the blade ends up hitting bedrock which is poking through, this cause sharp rocks to be scattered around, just to cut your tyres up!! Well, there ya go, that is why. This is the bartender and his rules!

The knicker canon which I never saw used as it was a female free evening

A couple of other travellers from the east, Michigan and Quebec from memory, although I forgot to write down their names.

Then it was 10pm and kick out time, so I grabbed a few photos on the way back, as well as a take away beer
