For Kootenay Mountain Culture’s Winter 2009 “Competition” issue, I investigated what an Olympic hangover looks like at altitude.

Now, with just 78 days until the Winter Olympics rolls into Whistler, it seems fitting to look at what previous host mountain communities have gotten for their hospitality. Anyone who’s ever hosted a wicked party knows the morning after can be rough.

 

The big question is: can the Games be more than just a billion dollar party?

The recent resolution for an Olympic Truce seems a pretty blunt instrument for peace, given that Canada has no intention of pulling troops out of combat in Afghanistan during the Olympics. The Games had a real chance to put its money where its peace-proclaiming mouth is, in 2001, when the Bosnian Olympic Committee made a bold bid to bring the 2010 Games back to Sarajevo.

Bold, given that Sarejevo’s fifteen year old Olympic facilities were in ruins. Zetra Olympic Hall had been pulverised in mortar attacks during the siege, land mines prevent access to the Olympic bobsleigh run and the city still cannot afford the electricity to keep the skating rink open. Bid president, Bogic Bogisevic proposed a moral campaign to win the Games. He argued that the international community had stood by while the City of Sarejevo was devastated by civil war. That failure to act could be repaid by awarding the Games to the city as a stimulus to rebuilding.

But, as Olympic watchdog Chris Shaw told me in a later interview, the Olympics is not a moral event. It’s a business event. And the business case wasn’t there. The IOC visited Sarajevo as part of the 2001 bid process, but the city didn’t make the shortlist. Instead, the Games are coming to Whistler.

This is the story of an artist named Sheraton.
I just wrote this circa ten minutes ago. So excuse grammatical errors and such.
I’ll fix them as i find them.
This is the first time i’ve done something on this type of subject.

Sheraton, The Creative Artist

“Hey casino, come look at my newest illustration!” said Sheraton on a fair afternoon in the year 2037.
“It looks like our neighborhood back in Ohio”, said Casino.
“It’s the view from the top of Washington hill.”
“Do you remember things back then?”
“Barely, we were so little.”
“That was before the government introduced the new grid system and documentation laws.”
“Everything now is so categorize, what did you say they called it?
“The Sequencing Initiative: to categorize and record every event for the purpose of proving existence scientifically.”
“I don’t understand why that’s so important, but what of my painting?”
“Ah yes, it is very good. It reminds me of the old days when we would sit on that hill, look into the autumn leaves, and bask in the last few sunny days before winter.”
“I’m glad I could provoke that emotion.”
“But where are your destination identity coordinates?”
“Do I really need those for something that simple, can’t I just try to make people think without having to identify everything?”
“You know human memory, it forgets things. The reason the coordinates is so important is because it makes people think things are relevant and not fantasy.”
“I just don’t understand the need for proof when I can remember it so obviously clear in my head.”
“It’s just something to follow blindly, Why fight it?”
“You’re right.”
Sheraton begins to walk out of the studio and notices the city around her.
“How can people need proof for beauty like this?”

(20.45 Hours later)

Sheraton is stopping by her friend Daisy’s studio. Daisy is there painting a portrait of a French woman with black hair and fair skin. Sheraton is sure she has seen the painting before.
“Where did you get this idea? Sheraton asks.
“My head, I just wanted to paint a French woman. I used template #100000594, a painting called the “Mona Lisa”.”
“I see, is this your submission at the show?”
“Yes, I think it will be given awards for creativity.”
“Creative? Your copying an original piece!”
“But my subject matter is worthy of an Art and History prize.”
“I don’t understand, I must go.”
“What’s wrong Sheraton, wait!”

(Later that night)

Sheraton is alone in her studio trying to decide which piece to submit to the show the following day. She continues to forge out works with vivid uses of color and composition. She works until the brink of exhaustion.
Finally, She collapses onto the sofa.
Minutes later, Casino arrives.
“Sheraton, are you in here?
“Yes.”
“Have you decided which piece to submit?”
“No, I do not have any coordinates for my work.”
“Sheraton, why must you torture yourself?”
“I do not see why my works aren’t creative.”
“You must identify them.”
“But what if they are the first of their kind?”
“Then they mustn’t be creative. How can you expect to produce anything innovative if you do not produce coordinated work?”
“I am so distraught.”
“Listen to me Sheraton, Get past this phase of yours. You must see templates collect your thoughts and it is the only way the professionals will accept your work.”
“I will just have to remain uncreative.”
“Sheraton!”
“Fine, I will search for something.”
“Thank you, best of luck.”
Casino exits and Sheraton ponders. She opens a template index, finds an old painting called Starry Night, and begins to work.

(The Show)

Casino, Daisy, and a myriad of other artists, intellectuals, and other community members show up for the showing of people’s art.
The hall where this takes place is wonderfully lit and extremely rustic. The food and drinks served are wonderful.
Sheraton arrives just in time for the show to start. She sets up her piece as a speaker begins to talk about the importance of coordinates and the sequencing initiative.
Shortly thereafter, people begin to mingle amongst the artists and talk to them about their work. A growing group is collecting around Daisy’s portrait and the consensus seems to be it is ingenious.
But the real shocker arrives when Sheraton unveils her final piece, the newly dubbed The Starry Night’s Flight. People unanimously agree that Sheraton’s work has improved tremendously now that she has started using the coordinate system. To her amazement, the professionals find her work creative and original in its use of the template. After the professionals make their assessment, the crowd seems to shift this way also. People begin to offer Sheraton money for the painting, which she refuses to accept.
When approached by Casino, Sheraton asks if Casino “Is proud of what she has accomplished?”
Casino replies, “of course, your work is extremely brilliant and creative.”
“But what of the template and the work done before mine?”
“It must have been wonderful for the professionals to have given your update such a good review.”
“I guess you are right Casino.” Sighs Sheraton.
“I see you haven’t lost your vision Sheraton.”
“It seems not.”
“Let’s go get something to drink and celebrate.”
“Let me grab my coat.”
As Sheraton walks to get her coat, she looks out at the starry sky and then back at the room full of people happily leaving. She thinks to her-self, “It must be so that creativity stems from something already accomplished, how could all of these people be blinded by the professionals? It seems more likely that the defect is in me. Yes! The defect must be in me and the templates must be used to guide my weary mind in the right direction. I see it now. How could I have been so silly?”
She scurries back to meet Casino and no longer confused,
Sheraton lived happily ever after.

Finally, kemaren ke KMC (Kemang Medical Care). Udah penasaran banget sama RS yang satu ini, tapi ngga pernah kesana juga.

Berawal dari gigi yang senat senut! Emang lubangnya udah nyampe ke syaraf. Trauma sakit gigi yang parah, buru2 deh cari dokter gigi yang available. It turns out that there was a seminar for dentists! Susyeh bener nyari yang available!! Akhirnya dapet lah dokter di KMC ini.
Pertama dateng, pas liat interior nya, “bagus juga nih desain nya.. Keliatan steril nya rs.. Hehehe”. Langsung dateng ke bagian admission, karena pertama kali dateng.. Isi data & mba2nya ramah2 banget! Aku sraaattt srooott lagi flu juga nih, trus si mba nya “Ibu, butuh masker?? Kita ada kok persediaan masker..” Gubraks!! Malu juga ditegor tapi tetep ngga tau diri.. “Ngga pa pa mba.. Flu biasa kok!!” Abis selesai ngisi, dapet kartu berkunjung trus si mba nya langsung bilang “Mari saya antar bu ke poli..” Waahh.. Saluuuut! Pelayanan sejauh ini ok neh pikir gw!!

Nyampe di poli suasana nyaman.. Ngga nyeremin.. Walaupun jantung dag dig dug gara2 mau ke dokter gigi.. Di timbang dulu BB and di ukur TB.. Nunggu nya ngga lama kok.. Pas dipanggil, masuk ke ruang dokter, ruangannya OK juga.. Trus ada TV di depan kursi periksa pasien itu (ngga ngaruh juga sih.. Tetep aja deg2an.. Hehehe). Setelah jelasin ke dokter masalah gigi, di periksa & harus di foto dulu karena emang lubangnya kena syaraf jadi mo di liat lebih detail lagi.. Setelah itu dikerjain deh gigi nya.. I’m not gonna bore you with the story of how it went.. Pokoknya selama dikerjain dokter nya amat ramah and pelan2 and sabar ngadepin gw yang suka lebay kesakitan.. Hehehe..

Setelah selesai, dokternya kasih no hp, kata dia kalo sakit telfon dia.. I was like, what?!! Hebat bener.. Jarang2 nih dentist begini! Saluuutt lagi!! Hehehe..

Abis itu bayar ke kasir.. And it’s not as expensive as i thought it would be.. Abis bayar karena kasirnya deket pintu entrance and si doorman nya kayaknya tau gw pasien baru, dia nganterin gw ke pintu exit nya.. Waaahhh.. Gila yah..

So, to conclude, i’m extremely satisfied with all the services that they gave me as a patient in that hospital.. Now, gw jadi mikir.. Kalo gw hamil lagi (Amiiiin), kayaknya gw mo nyoba disana aja deh DSOG.. Udah denger bbrapa review tentang yang ngelahirin disana and review nya bagus2 juga.. Jadi tertarik deh..

Anyway, udah malem banget.. Time for my beauty sleep..

We have returned from our tour! Sick, Bearded, and Tired. But still ready to rock, of course. Here are some highlights and lessons learned:

- Never judge a book (a club) by its cover (by the outside, even if it looks like a cabin in the middle of nowhere).
- If a bar challenges you to kill a keg, do it. Maybe wait until after you’re done playing to begin your quest.
- Bring a battery powered hair straightener.
- Ohio is wicked far away.
- If you roll into any Southern town with 13 dudes and sing Karaoke, you will make friends.
- If you roll into any Southern town with 13 dudes, you will make friends anways.
- Florida is wicked hot.
- Don’t take Skully’s shit without asking.
- Don’t open a rock club in Orlando across the street from a crazy Hatian family. Don’t.
- Anybody can have a yard and advertise it as a Campground on the internet.
- Matamoras, PA knows how to party.
- Robby Wu from KMC found the cure for the common cold; sleep for 36 hours.
- If you have a band, try to not promote a show at a Southern Baptist Med School.
- Enticing Southern Baptist Med students with lines like “you want to fucking party!?” and “$5 all you can drink!” will not help.
- 10 miles to the gallon is nothing to brag about.
- New York City is awesome, just not until after 10pm on a Friday night.
- Tattoos of fists giving the middle finger while holding a lightening bolt rule.
- Don’t go to Katz. Katz has rats.
- Some people should not attempt to grow beards.
- Matt and I are Fooz Ball champions.
- If you and some friends lift a van off the ground by yourselves, there is probably a truck behind it helping you.
- No one in Branchville, NJ can be trusted. No one.
- Bikini girls wash vans better than anybody. Period.

It’s pretty!

We had a pretty good open house but the website being down has caused some confusion and I think stopped quite a few people from coming to the opening. So in an effort to pump up more people into coming and signing up I am offering more demos for the ABC Music and ME. We are now offering the classes in studio for 40 euro a month.

We are still offering all the other classes but I think the ABC Music and Me will help get the other classes filled because I will be doing a demo for those classes but also explaining the benefits of the other classes we have to offer. I belive wholeheartedly in this program so hopefully others will come to believe in it too!

Classes begin Sept 14th

We are now offering ABC Music and Me It a program for preschoolers. The program is set up to teach about music and different instruments to increase the love of reading and to promote confidence. We are offering the class M W F at 3:15 for 30 min and the cost is 40 euro a month.

Our time is for the age group 11/2 to 3 years old. This is the class after Village. So if your child started with us in village as a baby they would age up into this program. In this program we begn to address gathering together as a family and making music together. Children in this program have improved walking and motor skills a longer attention span and their vocab is being built everyday as they absorb everything they see and hear.

Parents enjoy learning about their child and with their child in this program. The major things Our Time promotes would be promoting music making at home, parent and child bonding, Helping the parents take the lead in playing dancing with their child and encouraging self-confidence and self -expression, social skills and cooperation all things needed to be successful in school.
The class is 45 mins long with one class a week for about 15b or 16 weeks depending on the unit being worked on. The max amount of students for this class would be 12.

Kaiserslautern is right in the center, and just to the north and slightly west is Erfenbach. Look closely, it’s tiny! If you follow the road marked with a “6″ in a blue box to the west/southwest, you’ll see Landstuhl, where we lived for the first three months in a temporary apartment. Just north of Landstuhl, you’ll see the airfield of Ramstein Air Base. George works to the east of Kaiserslautern, but it’s not marked and it’s too small to really see on this map.

Kindermusik Village is a program that helps to strengthen the bond between parents and child. This program is a very early introduction to music that has a calming effect on both parent and child. This is an awesome program not just for the child but also for the parent.

Parents are encouraged in these classes to interact with their child and to help introduce music to their child. This class is for newborns to -1 1/2 year olds. Village classes involve alot of movement for the parents and for the children. With the children able to explore the age appreciate instruments sensory development will be stimulated.

Village classes feature Gathering time, singing, movement , object play, literature, vocal play, quiet time and leaving time.

While you may not understand why these types of things would be used with children this young , it is very important because children learn by watching and listening and using all of their senses to explore. By watching us perform and sing and do the movements they are absorbing and storing information. When you are in class you may not notice what is going on but at home you may hear your child testing their voice or attempting to clap to music they hear or swaying with you in time to music.

Socializing even at this age can have fabulous benefits even at this age. By interacting with caregiver and the other people in the class the child is learning to be comfortable around people and in new places. Social interaction for the children will be the group dances and circle dances that take place during the classes

I hope this post has shed some light on this class. If you have some questions about this particular class let me know and I will answer them. The next class we will go over that I am going to be teaching will be Our Time.

I am very proud to say that we have been getting a very good response to the Kindermusik. We are working very hard to make sure that we are up and running. We will be having an open house on the 29 of Aug. We will be Open for classes on the 14th of Sept. The classes that will be offered are

Village, Our Time, Family Time, Imagine That and ABC Music and Me.

I am going to dedicate a page to each of the classes so that parents who have not enrolled their child in these programs have a feel of what class they want to enroll their child in. Village, Our Time and Family Time will be offered three days a week and Imagine That will be offered twice a week.  The classes are small with no more than 12 children usually in each of the classes. It is enough to help with socialization for both parent and child and small enough so that the children and parents are not overwhelmed with too many people in the classes.

My goal with all these classes are to bring child and parent (for the classes where the parents stay) closer together and to foster a positive learning environment for music. With so many school cutting art programs Kindermusik I believe is a step in helping children to experience the art of music.

So I started training as a kindermusik teacher and I am very excited. The more I learn about the classes and how they will be taught and run the more I feel like I am going to love doing this and that I will actually be very sad that I have to leave when it’s our time to PCS out of the country. Everything is coming together very nicely for getting everything off the ground. Our open house I am hoping will be very very full. My own children loved the program when I was giving it a test drive in the living room lol. So I am very confident that the program will go over very well with other children.

I love that I will be given a chance to interact with the kids at their level that I am doing something to make them want to learn because it’s not something they have to memorize and then get it right for a test it’s something fun that will enhance all of the different personality traits of the child. Helping children develop confidence in themselves is just a joy.

So now that I am done sounding all sappy I am going to finish practicing my classes and go to bed.

Jag vet inte riktigt vad skillnade mellan rallycross och folkrace är men motorerna var mycket blankare i crossbilarna.

En del mekaniker satt med en laptopp i knät när de stod still och varmkörde motorn.

Men annars så såg det faktist mest ut som ett vanligt folkrace.

Men det blev inget bra, grussprutet och dammet blev så konstigt, onaturligt tyckte jag.

Hi guys!

A small start has been made, in the right direction, for what we refer to as, the Calcuta CleanUp Campaign, last Saturday the 16th May, ‘09 – the day of the election results. 

Greatly inspired by Mudar Patherya’s Calcutta Sparkling in the Southern parts of the city, we thought why not partner and move ahead in making our city a better place to live in. 

We went and bought a couple of pliers, a few cutters and St. Joseph’s, our Alma Mater, provided ladders and the rest. We met in front of The Statesman office on Central Avenue at 6 am and after an initial boost of lovely sandesh and a few biscuits started heading to our target – the Chandni Chowk Street (yea, just like Delhi). Upon reaching the street we discovered how badly it was littered with poll graffiti, banners, flags and what have you, of the two major political parties, Trinamool and CPM. After an initial half an hour of hesitation, and led on and encouraged by our brother Mudar we gave our all for the next couple of hours in cleaning the street of all sorts of trash. 

Not only did we remove all the flags, banners and temporary hoardings (which seemed quite permanent) but we also got rid of illegally placed advertisements. posters stuck on walls, etc. (Though I must admit here that we left a poster of the movie Bandidas untouched, as it starred Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz – Sorry guys, but there’s only so much that a man can do.  

Students in school uniforms – that too, white – and funky red-t-shirt-flashing-Rehan and car-driving-Mudar, all getting down and dirty to clean someone else’s mess up, was quite a sight for the locality. Though we’d gone with the mental preparedness to face some kind of a resistance, we were shocked to see people come out and help us with ladders and knives whenever required. One local flashed a smile and muttered – “thank you bhai”. That was the high point of the day for me – good work does get appreciated. 

I guess now, a movement has started. 

No more shall we sit on our laurels and complain that nothing happens. 

No longer shall we complain that the establishments that be don’t do their job.

No longer shall we expect everything out of everyone and nothing out of oneself. 

Thank you Mudar for showing us the way. 

Thank you guys for helping build the team of change. 

Thank you Calcutta for waking us up.

So this marks the end of festivities and now I have nothing to look forward to but final exams But it was great while it lasted! Our club made a lot of money, people got drunk, we ran out of eggs to make omlettes 계란말이 and then I cheered during AKARAKA from 2-11pm. Friday was  steadily drizzling rain, which sucked, but it was still a lot of fun.Damn it was tiring but awesome. There were new celebs: Taegun 태군 who was super hot and sang “Call Me”, Gag Concert comedians, Yonsei alum who are now famous, Cho Seungwoo who sings btw, Norazo, Hwayobi, KARA, Yoon Mirae, and Super Junior!

After all the cheering Prometheus and I went to KMC and had chicken and beer–the best remedy to a hungry stomach. Then on to our second drinking place where we had crazy good fruit soju and I finally had okonomiyaki for the first time in my life whch was amazing. Then we went noraebanging for almost 3 hours–which was a first. Went we came outside it was 5:30am but the crazy thing is there were still students on the streets, going out for breakfast and curing their hangovers. So we too went fora  ramyun and fried rice brekkie, and said our goodbyes to the drizzly morning. I got home at 7 and collapsed in bed, then woke up for work to teach those ingrates. XD

Yoon Mirae 윤미래 a Korean rapper who was one of the best performers.

Yoon Mirae’s half-black half-Korean and apprently wasn’t that good at Korean 5 or 6 years ago. WOW her raps were really touching.

SUPER JUNIOR!! Omg I die I die. Jungu says he only saw 11 of tem but I don’t know who’s missing…

They sang a new song I didn’t know, “Rokuko 로꾸러”, and “Sorry Sorry 쏘리쏘리”
