Unexpected Guests is due November 10th via Gold Dust and features album cuts and rarities, sequenced by DOOM himself.

MF Doom was one of the first underground artist I listened to. (Wikipedia, The lazy mans encyclopedia)” Dumile was born on January 9, 1971 in London, England, the son of a Trinidadian mother and Zimbabwean father.^[1] He then moved with his family to New York and was raised on Long Island, New York.

As Zev Love X, he formed the group KMD with his younger brother DJ Subroc and another MC called Onyx the Birthstone Kid.^[1] A&R rep Dante Ross learned of KMD from the hip hop group 3rd Bass, and signed the group to Elektra Records.^[2]

Dumile and KMD’s recorded debut came on 3rd Bass’s song “The Gas Face” from The Cactus Album^[1], followed in 1991 with KMD’s album Mr. Hood, which became a minor hit through its singles “Peachfuzz,” “Who Me?” and heavy video play on cable TV’s Yo! MTV Raps and Rap City.

Subroc was struck and killed by a car in 1993 while attempting to cross a Long Island expressway before the release of a second KMD album, titled Black Bastards.^[1] The group was subsequently dropped from Elektra Records that same week. Before the release of the album, it was shelved due to controversy over the its cover art,^[2] which featured a cartoon of a stereotypical pickaninny or sambo character being hanged from the gallows.

With the loss of his brother, Dumile retreated from the hip-hop scene from 1994 to 1997. He testifies to disillusionment and depression, living “damn near homeless, walking the streets of Manhattan, sleeping on benches.”^[1][3] In the late 1990s, he left New York City and settled in Atlanta. According to interviews with Doom, he was also “recovering from his wounds” and swearing revenge “against the industry that so badly deformed him.”^[1] Black Bastards had become bootlegged at the time, leading to Doom’s rise in the underground hip-hop world.” His beats are awesome and his flow is just so distinct. Add a couple of his CD’s to your car ride.

Now, Hip-Hop has it’s legends. Held aloft on the mountains of commercial success, or the arse end of the Eighties. But what about the others?

Sure, we know of Dre, the Wu, the 18th Letter, L. Krishna, the niggles with anger, Dre 3k and the Boi. Marshall, Cliff and Reggie etc etc.

Its about time a few others got a mention, a few that possibly slipped under the radar of our die-hard reader(s).

I present to you, the first Unsung Hero of the Hop. Dj Sub-Roc.

Perhaps best known as the launching pad for one M.F. Doom, Kausing Much Damage personified the early boom-bap sound that underpinned hip-hop throughout the nineties. While later Doom efforts showcased his ear for the obscure sample, under the moniker Zev-Love X – his K.M.D sound kept the ingredients rather simple.

Base heavy, Check. Dusty break loop, Check. One bad-ass New-York Eazy-E sounding sibling, Check. While there is no doubt that Zev helped define the style of the group, it was his younger brother Sub-Roc who truly flourished over K.M.D’s distinct drowned percussion.

Just before the completion of the controversial second album Black Bastards, Sub-Roc was struck by a car and killed. A true loss to any fan of expression and more poignently, real hip-hop.

What Sub-Roc embodied more than anything, was a trait solely lacking in hip-hop in recent times. Fun.

Without getting too nostalgic and preachy. Hip-hop truly has lost that spirit that brought it out of the grid systems of New York, the sound systems of Herc and Co, and into the living room of the middle class gin-drinking yuppie.

It didn’t have to threaten to entertain, sure it could and would at times, but it had a point to prove to its fellow genres (no, not you emo! before then). It certainly proved its point, perhaps too much I would argue – given the parody it exudes at times. Perhaps the cover of Black Bastards was not controversial, rather, prophetic of things to come.

Do you remember when emcees had fun over a track?

If not, then I urge you to turn the volume up, anything less than a Spinal Tap eleven is truly sacrilege.

La collection K ? C’est en fait un incroyable et foisonnant fourre-tout qui comprend des musiques aussi variées que le Reggae, le Rap, le Soul ainsi que le Blues et le Rock’n’Roll !

Pas toujours facile de s’y retrouver donc !  C’est pourquoi  j’ai pris l’initiative d’aller fouiner dans mon fichier «nouveautés 2009» afin de vous faire une petite sélection de médias à ne pas manquer… Une sélection transversale qui se veut éclectique et personnelle  !

On démarre en force avec une excellente compilation de Reggae -

Excellente double compilation célébrant les 50 ans d’existence du Randy’s Records Shop qui deviendra ensuite VP records… Du Rocksteady au Ska en passant par le Early Reggae, avec des morceaux de Lord Creator, Les Heptones, Alton Ellis etc etc…  Et un documentaire sur DVD dont voici un  extrait… !

Dans le même rayon mais clairement plus Dub, il y a l’excellent label Wackies que l’on suit de près et on a bien raison, récemment arrivé, un “DanceHall Showcase 2″ de Sugar Minnot paru en 1983… Bon, il n’y a que 10 tracks et certains sont des versions d’un même morceaux, mais quelle tuerie tout de même, le Genuine Lover est particulièrement réussit !!

Petite présence belge dans le rayon Rap ! Sur le jeune label Thin Consolation se spécialisant dans l’Electro de travers… Ici c’est la 8ème sortie et il s’agit d’un habile mélange d’Abstract Hip-Hop, de sons 8 Bit et d’Electro barrée… Mention spéciale pour la superbe pochette cartonnée en trois volets sérigraphiée… ! La classe !

Toujours aux States mais dans un genre plus “classique” on a reçu une petite perle de Soul-Funk qui n’a rien à envier à Mr James Brown… L’énorme Lee Fields et sa Soul-Funk délicate, bien écrite et superbement produite!

Lee Fields est l’un des nombreux héritiers de la façon de faire “James Brown”. Début des années 60 on le baptise même “Little JB”. Sur “My World”, Lee Fields a travaillé avec de jeunes instrumentistes de New-York. Il sort de l’exercice de style “James Brown revival” et met en avant un groove profond puisant dans les racines du genre ! Une belle découverte !

Alter ungewiss, Skills unbegrenzt und zu beschreiben unmöglich: der Rapper und Produzent MF Doom ist ein Mysterium – alle weiteren Infos über den geheimnisvollen Maskenmann würden den Rahmen dieser Rezension deutlich sprengen. Inspiriert von verstaubten 60er-Jahre-Cartoons der “Fantastic Four”, jeder Menge knisternder Jazz- und Soulscheiben und dem Poeten Charles Bukowski, steht nach fünf Jahren Wartezeit endlich sein drittes Soloalbum im Plattenregal. Obwohl das reimende und beatschraubende Enigma für Born like this den Namenszusatz “MF” mittlerweile abgelegt hat, setzt Daniel Dumile äußerlich weiterhin auf seine metallene Maske. Schon das kunstvoll gefertigte Klapp-Cover aus dem britischen Hause Lex Records lässt HipHop-Herzen höher schlagen.

Schlagkräftig agiert Doom anschließend verbal auf das Mashup der J Dilla-Beats Dig It und Phantom of the Synths, ehe mit Jake One direkt der nächste MPC-Meister den Klang aufbereitet. Brüsk und ungefiltert demonstriert der Superschurke Doom in meisterlicher Manier, warum er der Untergrund-König der Rapmusik ist. Auch der Sound besticht durch sein genial unsauberes Klima, das von erdigen Samples und eingestreuten Schnipseln aus längst abgesetzten TV-Serien durchzogen ist. Abzug gibt es allerdings für die nicht ganz frisch aufgelegten Beats. Einiges Material hat Doom nämlich in Form seiner als Metal Fingers veröffentlichten Instrumental-Serie Special Herbs bereits verwendet. Das eingängig-treibende UFO von ESG zum wiederholten Male neu aufzubereiten geht auch nicht gerade als innovativ durch. Dennoch gelingt ihm mit tatkräftiger Unterstützung von Raekwon am Ende ein sehr gelungenes Yessir!.

Für Absolutely kommt es zu einem gelungenen Aufeinandertreffen mit Madlib, das in einer runden Groove-Session mündet. Lightworks von Dillas Donuts-Album ist dann ein weiteres Stück, das nicht ganz unbekannte Schallwellen auswirft. Kongenial hängt sich Doom bei Cellz an Charles Bukowski dran, der obskurer Weise sein Werk “Dinosoria, We” zum Besten geben darf. Seiner Vorliebe für melodiöse Streicher-Loops frönt MF auf seinen bestechenden Eigenproduktionen That’s That und Angelz. Bei letzterem hilft außerdem der mit Dooms-Timbre perfekt harmonisierende Ghostface Killah alias Tony Starks mit seinen Reimen aus. Trotz seines düsteren Oldschool-Antriebs unterstreicht Supervillainz die humorvolle Seite von Doom, indem er mit seinen Homies Kurious, Slug und Prince Paul die wahren Schurken des Pop-Raps mit einer gehörigen Portion Auto-Tune persifliert.

Born like this ist trotz seiner nicht immer brennend neuen Beats ein vielschichtiges Gesamtwerk des einzig wahren Maskenmannes, das zum dringenden Rap-Pflichtprogramm in 2009 gehört.

Born of tragedy and betrayal, a villain reigns throughout the underground. An evil genius and hip hop iconoclast, infamous and tormented, he is shrouded in mystery, hidden behind a mask of metal. Few know his real identity. He’s been called Vicktor Vaugh, Metal Fingers, Danger Doom, Madvillain and King Geedorah. But to most, he is simply DOOM…

The legend begins circa 1991. A man, calling himself Zev Love X, creates the hip hop trio KMD with his brother, DJ Subroc. Armed with a major label deal with Elektra and heavy play on Yo! MTV Raps and Rap City, KMD was destined for success. Their critically acclaimed debut, Mr. Hood, was their ticket to the American Dream.

But two short years later, tragedy struck. KMD was set to release their sophomore album, Black Bastards when DJ Subroc was killed in a car accident. That same week, they were dropped from Elektra and Black Bastards was shelved.

Reeling from the loss of his brother and exploited by a duplicitous music industry, Zev Love X became noticeably absent from the scene. Dealing with depression and “recovering from his wounds,” he swore revenge against “the industry that so badly deformed him.” During this time, the unreleased Black Bastards tape was bootlegged and his legend permeated every corner of the underground.

Four long years passed and Zev Love X and KMD were merely memories. Only the Black Bastards tape lived on. Hip Hop was still recovering from the losses of 2 Pac and Biggie. And the genre was on it’s way to monetary success and societal irrelevance. It was during this tenuous time, a man began freestyling at the Nuyrican Poets Cafe in New York. He wore a mask and spit fire. A legend reborn

Zev Love X was back, reborn as MF DOOM. Inspired by the comic book villains with whom he identified, he set out to exact his revenge on mainstream Hip Hop.

DOOM bucked fast growing trends like bitches, bling and fake gangsta posturing. He didn’t show up on 106th and Park with his hypeman and jewels rambling about his $90,000 watch. T-Pain never sang a hook on one of his songs. He never fed the machine of Hip Hop commercialism.

Instead, he embraced Hip Hop’s roots with his masterful flow, turntablism, and sick punchlines. He appeared on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and talked to a wad of meat. He featured Charles Bukowski on records. He became the epitome of independent Hip Hop.

From 1999’s Operation Doomsday to last month’s Born Like This, DOOM embodied the authenticity and developed the cultish following major label artists crave. But, not once, did he lose his integrity. Not once, did he deviate from his plan of exposing mainstream Hip Hop as the fraud it become.
