Yea I know it’s been a while since I updated, but I got busy with my new job and somehow just forgot about this blog until today. Anyway, here is a picture of a cropped cardigan I just finished knitting for my sister. Aren’t the buttons cute? I love em and hope my sis does too (she’ll be home from uni on Dec 18th… can’t wait). As far as the sweater design is concerned, I adapted the Drops Jacket on Knitty.com. Since I used a bulky variegated bubbly yarn, the pattern on the front is much subtler than the version on knitty.com (even though you can’t really see it in this picture at all, but it’s there!) but that’s okay, it still looks really good, and the colors of the yarn are simply gorgeous in real life.

(click on the photo for a larger view)

I also made another adapted version of this coat for myself but am still in search for the perfect buttons. I will post pictures as soon as that mission is accomplished and my coat completed.

SO obviously its Turkey Day and I am sitting here being completely lazy and cruising funny sites just for the complete mindless retardation of it all. We are supposed to be heading over to Mama’s soon, but the lure of my PJ’s is strong young Jedi. I have recently had tech issues on the printer front and needed to reinstall my drivers. Yeah I so am just not capable of tech we should know this about me right off the bat. My other personality Betty is but I do not let her out too much as shes rather a bore. Nerd Pron fuck that. I rather be the Vintage Vixen darling Lu that I am. Yup.

So The Russian offered some points of interests : look here and here he said.. check check and low behold there it was my driver. Yup. Install Print. WOOT ! Now I can print go sit somewhere today and knit endless hours away. YAY ME !

While looking at hat patterns I found this and fell out of my butthole:

Over the past month I’ve been participating in a secret pal swap through Knitty and it’s been super fun.

Here’s the gist for those of you who’ve never heard of this: You’re paired with both an “upstream” and a “downstream” pal. You send fun goodies to your downstream and your upstream does the same for you. It’s awesome because you get the fun of cyber-stalking someone to figure out what sorts of things they would like and you can be as creative as you like in picking them out, packaging, and sending them. Plus, you have someone doing the same for you so you get a box of awesomeness to open too.

Well, my box of awesomeness arrived yesterday and I’m thrilled.

Pretty Cheep Project Bag – super cute with a picture of a purple bird on it and useful because all of my other project bags are only half this size.

Amy’s Blend spiced rooibos tea from Caribou Coffee – very exciting as I’ve not tried rooibos yet.

Eucalan wool wash – I usually wash my woolly things in Dawn so I’m thrilled to have some fancy soap for my special things.

Lucy’s Chocolate Factory toffee crunch bar – Yum!

A skein of Wisdom Yarns’ Los Angeles sock yarn in brown, red, yellow, and blue – who doesn’t need more sock yarn, and such pretty colors!

Two skeins of Berroco Pure Merino in a beautiful dark teal – so soft!

One skein of a very bulky, natural colored wool yarn from Bartlett Yarns – this is the smooshiest yarn I’ve ever felt, it’s like hugging a sheep (without all of the wiggling and baa-ing and poop).

Thank you, thank you, thank you, oh secret pal of mine. Now, my secret pal didn’t tell me her name, but I have a strong suspicion that it’s Christy. Yoohoo, Christy! Care to confirm or deny?

PS: If you’d like to see what I put together for my downstream, check out Lynn’s blog, Froggy Knittery.

So, I spent a long time this summer working on my Laminaria (rav link). I had this skein of malabrigo sock in the lettuce colorway, and it was just so beautiful and green, i know it would be perfect for the pattern. So, in June, in the midst of a Lost marathon, I began the pattern as written for the smaller size. It’s a tough pattern on the hands because there are a lot of times when you have to knit multiple stitches into three stitches. It’s not a difficult concept, but the execution is time consuming and challenging.

After getting through repeat after repeat, I ran out of yarn 3 rows from the finish. That was a low blow. I didn’t want to go out and buy more yarn for just three rows, so after careful consideration of what to do, I ripped out the whole thing. This amazed my friends who are new knitters, because they get so attached to their work. If i had taken the time to do some math (or scour ravelry), I probably would’ve figured out that I could’ve just ripped back and done one fewer repeat of the blossom chart. But I decided to do a stockinette portion instead.

Attempt #2, I followed the stockinette instructions for the Ishbel shawl until I had what i deemed to be the ‘right’ number of stitches, then did a repeat (or maybe it was two) of the blossom chart, then did the edging charts. I was convinced this would work. It did not. I again ran out of yarn 3 rows before the finish. So I ripped back until I only had the stockinette portion, then only did the edging charts, and I had just enough yarn. So, after all that, here is my final product:

I pretty much adore it. The yarn is so soft and warm, the color is perfect, and I really like the look of the stockinette with the lace edge. I wear it a lot and get a lot of compliments on it.

In life news, I got my visa!!!! Which means i will be able to head back to the states for the month of december! And hopefully when I come back I will have a new job! I will be home for the entire month of december, so if you want to see or speak to me, that is the time to do it!

I have to say, learning to KIP (knit in public) was fairly hard for me. I wasn’t ashamed- I

I have to say, learning to KIP (knit in public) was fairly hard for me. I wasn’t ashamed- I’m a very proud knitter. I just don’t like being looked at. Stared at. Oogled. Whichever.

Having once been an advocate of breastfeeding (I still am an avocate, I just don’t have a baby to feed anymore), it may be hard to believe I am that anxious about KIP. I nursed in public, (NIP) with blankets and such, but NIP doesn’t actually get many stares. Dirty looks, yes, but not stares- if someone stares at that, it makes them some kinda pervert, I think.
But KIP gets looks. At first, that made me really nervous- I started to be concious of how fast I was knitting, or if I looked like a newbie. I’d make mistakes because I was so caught up in doing it right.
But recently, I’ve noticed it doesn’t matter anymore. I just do it. And I almost enjoy the looks. Occassionally someone will ask something: mostly people that are a bit off, sometimes drunk or kinda crazy. I no longer mind (if fact, if you have to have a conversation with a crazy person, it helps to have a harmless topic ready at your fingertips).

Mostly I knit socks- if I have to make a long bus trip, I’ll start a simple sock the night before to take with me. Sometimes its too crowded to pull out the knitting- if you start knitting on the bus with a bunch of people still standing up, I think it kinda makes them jealous. Which could be a good thing, if you’re that kinda person. I’m not.

But I have to tell you, one day I was punished for my bold KIP. I was on a bus that was semi-busy. You know, a handful of people still standing. I had a seat, of course (I dare anyone to knit while STANDING on a bus!) so I pulled out my sock. I’m happily knitting along, and come to the end of a dp needle. I go to switch needles, and ‘pling!’ the loose needle flies up in the air, above a few heads and lands at the feet of some of these poor souls that were standing. Beet red, I had to literally crawl on the bus floor and ask a few people to move. I got back to me seat and put the rest of the knitting away, and pretended to be asleep for the rest of the trip.
It didn’t scar me though, as is evidenced by my continued KIP. I’m just very, very careful now, and only do it on the bus when I have a couple seats to myself. And I’m currently reconsidering the whole idea of dp needles being the best projects for KIP.

Now for some finished projects. First, my elephant hat.

Not as soft or warm as I’d like, and frankly I need to loosen up when I knit with color, but still, I’m happy. I think it looks better on me than my daughter (but don’t tell her that, please). I’m making myself a new one anyhow- I want something sinfully soft.

Next, the cowl and fingerless gloves i’ve made for my sister for xmas:

I’m very proud of these. I LOVE the yarn, which is so soft, I can’t bear to throw out the meter or so I have left. I hope she likes them too.

Finally, the socks I made for my husbands stepgrandmother (how complicated family relations are now!).

Nothing fancy, but I’m proud of them. I love toe up socks now, and the Knitty formula I’m using, so much so that I don’t want to use anything else. Really, not a very productive attitude.

Well, that’s it for now. I’m off this afternoon for a yarn orgy! I’m going to Romni yarns, which has the most yarn I have ever seen! I only have a $100 to spend (really, I shouldn’t spend it but its for xmas presents!) but I hope to come home with lots of goodies! I’ll be dying to write about it… if I can pull myself away from actually knitting!

After the sweater marathon this weekend, I decided to work on a smaller and easier project on my list. I do have another sweater to cast on for, but I figured that a slight break from a big important project will help keep things going smoothly and give me a break so I don’t get too stressed out. I’ve been listening to a local radio station that is already playing Christmas music, both to help me get in more of a Christmas mood this year and as motivation to get those gifts done in time. So far it’s working out great, and I’ve had very few Bah Humbug moments.

I started working on my next project yesterday at lunch. I knit my gauge swatch like good little girl, and to my surprise I got the stitch gauge on the first try! I was so excited, because gauge swatches haven’t always been so kind to me in the past. One thing I failed to pick up on was how off my row gauge was. In most projects that isn’t much a concern because the pattern will tell you to knit for a certain length, but with Dashing it will make the mitts monstrously long. Now that I’ve almost got one mitt done, I’ve had to frog everything and start over because I can’t have Go-Go-Gadget Armwarmers as a gift for my aunt. Luckily it didn’t take any time at all to knit that one up, so I’m not quite as worried about losing that time.

Today I’m going to work on another swatch with one needle size smaller and see if that helps with my row gauge. Let’s hope it works!

I am also considering placing my Foundling Nemo hat in the shop. It is a heavily modified version of a Knitty pattern called “Dead or Alive?” To best insure I did not end up with an angry designer or fan of that designer I have contacted her for permission for the one-time sale for this heavily modified version of her pattern. One thing I’ve wanted to do ever since I started knitting socks (almost a year ago) was to knit socks for my mom. She has big feet though (mine are big enough!) and that has always intimidated me.

Anyhow, my mom has some circulation issues and her feet are often cold in the winter, so she’s a prime candidate for wool socks. I had half intended to make some for her last Christmas. (Please keep in mind that I finished my first ever pair of socks in SEPTEMBER last year. I’m nothing if not optimistic, I guess). I picked Thuja because it seemed like I could handle worsted-weight socks for my mom’s size 11 feet.

This has been a quick knit so far:

The only complaint I have is related to my own stupidity. I got as far as being all set to Kitchener the toe and then cut the wrong end of the yarn. I tried to pick back far enough to fix it, but I suck at picking back decreases. After thirty minutes of fighting with it, I put it on time out for about ten days and knit ghosts instead.

This week, I picked it up after all the ghost yarn was used up and it was swimming lesson knitting. Turns out, swimming lessons was almost long enough to finish the toe a second time. During the time the sock was on time out, I also decided I tend to not account for negative ease in sock feet, with the results that so far, all my socks are too big really, so I re-knit less of the foot before I started the toe. I think it will be fine. Now to just whack out the other sock before Christmas…

I made a start on the Shipwrecked shawl from Spring 2009 Knitty. Displacement knitting as there were

I made a start on the Shipwrecked shawl from Spring 2009 Knitty. Displacement knitting as there were other things I should be getting on with like the tangerine wateraid cardigan for Julia.

Anyway I was motoring through it as it’s quite a fast and addictive knit when suddenly, on row 23 of the Madeira section of the shawl I realised I’d missed out row 19 which unfortunately is quite a striking part of the pattern (you do a yo k2 together all the way round which gives you a circle of small holes all the way round).

To make things worse I was in a hurry, about to go to a party with Spider so I pulled the needle out and decided to unravelled it that way instead of carefully knitting back 5 or so rows. Being a bit too enthusiastic I dropped rather a lot of stitches, made a right dogs breakfast of it and couldn’t find my place again.

Due to impatience I’ve ended up having to go back to row 1 of the pattern and wasted about 4 days in the process (2 days work, 2 days sorting out). So deciding that it was probably retribution from the knitting gods I’ve dug out the tangerine nightmare and have spent the evening trying to knock that into some shape to appease the gods.

I do have some finished knitting to write about but I need some good light to take a picture – and besides it’s more topical towards the end of the week.

Rosamund's Cardigan, by Andrea Pomerantz Pattern: Rosamund’s Cardigan, designed by Andrea

Rosamund's Cardigan, by Andrea Pomerantz

Pattern: Rosamund’s Cardigan, designed by Andrea Pomerantz, from Interweave Knits Fall 2009.

Yarn: A merino/silk/cashmere blend light worsted-DK yarn from Lambspun of Colorado’s own line of yarn.

Modifications: I love the concept of the cardigan, but didn’t think it looked that great on model — the close fit and the full closure down the front made even the beautiful model look rather chubby. So … I lengthened the sweater, lengthened the cap sleeves just a tad, ignored the hook-and-eye closures, and decided the right side would be the stockinette side rather than the purl side. And because left to its own devices the cardigan would open in a really wide inverted V, I gradually increased the width of the front panels as I knitted downwards.

And in the end: There was a certain peacefulness — or perhaps it was torpor — induced by knitting slowly on circular needles … and, I found a use for the fabulous abalone shell buttons I found at Lambspun.

Silver Belle, by Debbie Bliss

Pattern: Silver Belle, designed by Debbie Bliss, from Vogue Knitting Fall 2007.

Yarn: The same merino/silk/cashmere Lambspun of Colorado yarn used for Rosamund’s Cardigan. Years ago, during one of the store’s sales, I bought many skeins of this yarn because I fell in love with the teal color. And over the years it has been recycled. And recycled. I think these two sweaters are the final two incarnations, though.

Modifications: Changed various cables to make them symmetrical, and lengthened both the bodice and the peplum on the theory that the “babydoll” look is only for those under 20. Also changed the closures from two to three buttons to stop “the gape.”

What is so great: This is the most un-stodgy of cardigans. Besides, anything with cables — and lots of them — gets my vote.

Lizard Ridge Afghan, by Laura Aylor

Pattern: Lizard Ridge, designed by Laura Aylor, from Knitty Fall 2006. I don’t live anywhere near the Blue Ridge Mountains, so I thought of calling it the Devil’s Backbone afghan, but it’s just too pretty for such a moniker.

Yarn: Crazy beautiful way to use Noro Kureyon yarn. A lot of Noro Kureyon. About 7 balls of the Noro was recycled from a cardigan that had been sitting there waiting for a button band for 6 years (obviously it wasn’t going to happen), bought a bunch more new Noro, then decided that given the size DH wanted, we might go broke if I didn’t find a substitute. Hence the less eye-popping colors from Plymouth Yarn Boku. I also used up a bunch of scrap yarn of various weights from the stash.

Modifications: DH wanted a bed afghan long enough to cover his feet. So … 48 squares. Yes, I know, they look like rectangles and strips, but that’s because I knitted each square, bound off, then picked up the next square from the bound off edge — repeated ad nauseum until I had the equivalent of 6 squares per strip, and 8 strips total. No edging — I don’t like mixing crochet and knitting — but to control curling I substituted garter stitch (4 stitches) along the outside edge of the top and bottom strips. The long edges are the natural scalloping of the pattern.

What’s so great? It’s done!

I finally finished my Pomatomus socks! Whee! And there were no casualties on sock #2 which made me extremely happy.

As a short in between project and to use up some yarn I started on the Woodins from Knitty. I only had enough yarn to make one little Woodin so the rest of his buddies and tree home will have to wait ’til I have more random leftovers or actually buy more yarn for the project. But for the time being here’s one lonely guy…

And because my husband has been asking me for one I started a knit Murloc. He isn’t quite finished yet. A few more spines need to be knit a long with extra fluff for his tail fin and then we decided to buy some felt and make him a face. Even so I can’t resist posting a so far picture

What’s next on the agenda? Well my uncle has commissioned me to knit him a winter hat out of Qiviut! I’m super excited to order the yarn and get started. I’ll either order the yarn from:

Anchorage Museum
Cottage Crafts
Folknits

Jax also wants me to knit him a monster from “Where the Wild Things” are. There’s a free crochet pattern via Ravelry but I might make it work for me as knitting instead, but we’ll see how ambitious I’m feeling.

In order to face the week, I needed blackberry pancakes. (Mondays can be tough!) I ate them for breakfast and lunch, and they helped, like they always do. Moving on…

I knit this over the weekend for my friend H. (of wedding shawl fame) because tomorrow is her birthday! I just couldn’t wait any longer, so I gifted this yesterday, which means there is absolutely no danger of spoiling the surprise. I used more of my Hello Yarn Five Plum Pie handspun, and I still have about ten yards leftover — truly, a never-ending skein.

Calorimetry was one of the first patterns I attempted to knit — and while I finished it rather quickly, my skein of filatura di crosa 127 print (or whatever the pattern calls for, because I had not yet learned to substitute) won the day, and I finally understood why gauge matters. My first calorimetry was enormous! This time around, I read up on the pattern and followed some common modifications:

I cast on 88 stitches using size 6 needles, and worked only as many (decreasing stitch count) short rows as seemed like half of the width I was hoping for, and then completed the same number of (increasing stitch count) short rows to get to the other side, being careful not to run out of yarn.

Yay! I tried this on to take some pictures, and now that my hair is longer, I really like this. I may need to make one for myself.

I did manage to ply the polwarth. Here’s what it looks like before washing/thwacking:

This may be the softest, squishiest yarn I have ever spun. It is hanging to dry in the kitchen, and I can’t help but pet it each time I walk by.

In keeping with “hat-tober,” I cast on for yet another handspun hat — Cosy’s Super Hero Helmet Hat. I won the pattern on her blog a few weeks ago, and I am knitting it out of some of my earlier wheelspun: AVFKW Woolly Wonders corriedale in The Candle’s Nimble Flame. I’m using size 10.5 needles, and I love the squoosh of the garter stitch.

Apparently Boh also had a very busy day. (While I read, wrote, cleaned, knit, plied, grocery-shopped, cooked, etc., Boh moved bones back and forth from his box, growled at the electrician through the window, took notes on squirrel movement, and perhaps dreamed of rabbits, chipmunks, and deer.)

I have finished Wisp! I finished knitting Wisp a few days ago and blocked it last night. This morning I attached 11 shell buttons. I am very happy with how it looks, I was able to get a bit of extra length from blocking. I love the gentle color variations of the Dream in Color (Starry) yarn and the silver adds that extra sparkle. The pattern was fast and easy to knit, it looks much more complicated than it actually is, which makes it a great gift!

Last weekend was cold (-10 oC) it snowed on and off, and was generally miserable. Therefore we stayed in almost all weekend, caught up on tv shows, and I knit hats. I was knitting hats as it is a good way to use up single skeins here and there, quick gratification, and my head was cold. I ended up making three! (The last one is missing the brim, but I was tired and had to go to bed, I can fix that in 15 minutes when I get home!). Two are going into the Christmas box, one is gracing my head down here in South Dakota. They were predicting a mix of rain/snow for tonight, which means I’m not looking forward to tomorrow morning.

I started off making another Couvercle using Noro (Isharoo something, a lovely blend with angora) because I liked the last one I made so much, and had to give it away.

The pattern is from Knitty.com, originally in cotton (!), much better in a wool blend for our cold climate. I realized I still had a bunch of yarn left over, and made another!

Next up was another pattern from the Fall Vogue Knitting, #12. At first I didn’t really like this hat, and it looks a bit big and weird on the model. However having made four pairs of the mittens from which the cable/bobble pattern originated, and a leftover skein of Manos Del Uruguay, I gave it a whirl.

The photo isn’t that great, but this hat is a fun, fun knit. I mean, did I mention it had a lot of bobbles? Cables? It was great! AND my version looks pretty good on, it fits down over the entire ear, and is snug to the head, without the extra room on top. No modeled shots due to hideously ugly sick me this weekend. Perhaps when I get home and feel up to it. Now this is for the Christmas box, but of course now I want one as well, and I happen to have some more chunkier yarn stashed away that might just fit the ticket. This is a -20 oC hat!

And just so ya’ll know who really runs our household, its DEMON CAT!!!!!!

If you don’t pat her quick, she’ll get you!!!

Sikkert ikke like mykt og deilig, men sikkert like varme.

Her ligger vottene og nyter slyngpelargoniens siste dager i verandakassa.
