The fun of being a parent is finding humor in the things that drive you crazy.

There are fourteen doors in my house. There’s the front door, back door, four bedroom doors, two bathroom doors, and six closet doors. With that many doors in the house, I don’t understand how my boys always zone in on which door that I’m behind. Whenever they see a closed door, they feel that it’s necessary to knock on it. I am partly to blame for this. I have always tried to teach my children proper manners. That includes knocking on a door and waiting for a response before trying to open the door. However, if I close a door that usually means that I need my privacy. It doesn’t seem to matter which door it is, there always comes a knock on the door before I’ve decided to open it myself.
If I’m in the bathroom, with the door closed, then I definitely want my privacy. It’s like these kids are drawn by some magnetic field to a closed door but repelled by an open door. Every time that I go into the bathroom to do my business, my business and nobody else’s business, there’s a knock at the door. There must be some mathematical equation for this. Closed door + mom= knock, knock, knock. For the last twelve years, I have not been able to go to the bathroom in peace.
Today, I entered the bathroom hoping, just once in my life, for two minutes of privacy. Lo and behold, what do my ears hear? Knock, knock, knock.
“What,” I yell from my throne.
“Mom, are you going to the bathroom,” asked Austin.
“No, I’m visiting with the Pope,” is my reply. “Of course I’m going to the bathroom. Why what do you want?”
“Never mind.”
“You mean to tell me that you couldn’t wait two minutes to tell me never mind,” I grumbled opening the door.
It’s always something that could have waited just two tiny minutes until I opened the darn door. The question or comment never comes in the form of a dire emergency. God forbid they have to wait two minutes, let alone two seconds, to aggravate me.
Earlier today, I went outside to smoke a cigarette and to get a few minutes of peace and quiet. Ha, that didn’t work. As I took the first drag of my cigarette and pondered what my next task of the day would be, my oldest son, Christian, knocked on the inside of the back door and peered out the window at me. With phone in hand, he opened the door letting the freezing cold winter air into the house and proceeded to ask me what his fathers’ phone number was.
“I don’t know! What do I look like, a phone book?” I asked with a scowl on my face.
I set my cigarette down on the railing and went in to find his dads’ phone number. He had called his dad several times within the last two days. It shouldn’t be that hard to find the number already in the phone. I then proceeded to show him how to gently put his finger on the redial button and keep pressing it until the area code for New Jersey came up. After all, that’s about the only number from New Jersey that is dialed on our phone. He kept pushing the redial until he saw his dads’ number. With a smile and a press of the talk button, he had learned something new. He was totally dumbfounded by his new found knowledge.
I left him to his conversation and went back outside to finish my cigarette. When I came back in, I had to dodge the dust balls floating across the floor as my husband chased them with a broom. Oh my God, he’s sweeping! Yes world, I said sweeping and not sleeping. Now that’s a first. It’s really nice of him to sweep even though I’ll have to go behind him and redo it after he goes to work. After all, he is a man. I went to my room and shut the door. Maybe this time I can get some quiet time. Usually, when I have my bedroom door shut that means I’m either sleeping or I just want to be left alone. As soon as I sat down on my bed, there came a knock on the door.
“What,” I yelled.
“Can I come in,” asked Christian.
“Yes.”
I waited for him to open the door but he didn’t. I guess it wasn’t that important. I shrugged my shoulders and lay down on my bed. Knock, knock, knock.
“What now?”
“Can I come in?”
“Yes! I told you two minutes ago that you could come in,” I screamed.
“Sorry, I didn’t hear you,” he said opening the door.
“What do you want?”
“I just wanted to let you know that dad didn’t answer the phone,” he informed me.
“And you’re telling me this why,” I asked shaking my head.
“Cuz I wanted to let you know that I’m waiting for dad to call me back,” he replied sweetly.
Will there ever be a time, I wonder, when I can relax behind a closed door? Perhaps I need to start hiding out in the closets. I have yet to see the boys knocking on a closet door.

Today was special. Suffice it to say, though some call me stereotyper, the most insulting and degrading ways of getting attention lay always with the Chinese customers. Today was special.

I was doing a stock check for a customer, and the cashier asks me to back-up. The line isn’t long, just one couple with a scarf. I go to the register and the man begins by yelling at me, “You take forever! Why you take so long? You take too long! What’s wrong with you?” All the while he is literally knocking, KNOCKING on the counter, glaring at me, spittle flying. While he continues to yell at me, knocking on the counter, I just look at him and say, “You can lecture me, but I don’t care.”

You see, when the company stops making the jeans you love the most–don’t blame me, I didn’t make the decision, so stop saying, “You stopped making my favorite jeans,” because I didn’t make that choice.
When a co-worker forgets to take a tag off your clothes, don’t yell at me saying, “You always forget to take off my tags,” because I didn’t do it.
When the cashiers don’t ask for back-up when they should, don’t yell at me.

If I make a mistake with your transaction, I take responsibility. When I make a bad marketing decision, I take responsibility. But don’t you dare blame me, yell at me, or lecture me about something that I have no control over. That is one major wrong in a capitalist industry where money is seen as something holier-than-thou, where you think you have the right to do what you want because you’re buying a scarf. If we took one step outside the doors of that business, you would not dare act the same way.

So I quickly finished the transaction and left. Of course, the rude man who expected me to bow down and cower before his $30 purchase, wanted some form of pleasure, so within a minute I hear the manager looking for me. Which I am told that I made him wait a long time (did I really?), that I was rude (really? I thought we do onto others…), and I didn’t thank him… For what? Thank you for knocking on the counter, lecturing me because I decided to not make you wait any longer? I’m sure not going to thank you and hope you come back to buy another scarf next year.

Customer Type: Complainer, Don’t Kill the Messenger, (I feel the urge to make a subgroup for Chinese, since I was also clapped at like a dog in addition to this ‘knocking thing), Modern Slave-Owner.

INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE by S.I. Fishgal
US PTO Application No. 964,280 dated 11-28-78

ABSTRACT OF TIM DISCLOSURE

An internal combustion engine has a cylinder-piston device, an inlet, an exhaust, and a crankshaft with a kinematic chain between the latter and said piston. That chain includes joints and at least one member of the group consisting of a connecting rod, a rocker beam, a piston rod, and a connecting traverse. Said kinematic chain is provided with a resiliently biased means to displace when the cylinder’s gas pressure reaches a predetermined value, to store the gas excess energy and release it during returning the resiliently biased means to the initial position.
Above means represents at least one said member shaped as one or more springs, such as disc springs. The latter are placed in at least one gap between said piston, piston rod, joint with said crankshaft and a telescopic joint of said piston rod, or the spring-actuated movable support of the fulcrum of said rocker beam. Said joints can be made of elastic materials, such as rubber and plastic. The latter joints can have their internal collar biased to the piston and taking up the middle position during the operation.
The natural oscillating frequency of said means can be close to the forced frequency of the piston motions at the rated speed.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to internal combustion (diesel and gasoline) engines having a cylinder-piston device, an inlet, an exhaust, and a crankshaft with a kinematic chain between the latter and said piston. Said chain includes joints and at least one member of the group consisting of a connecting rod, a rocker beam, a piston rod, and a connecting traverse.
The objective of the present invention is to decrease the creation of NO and the occurrence of knocking. This is achieved by restricting the maximum pressure in the combustion chamber. Such a restriction lowers the chamber temperature and decreases NO formation too.
Known devices restricting the maximum pressure are mainly hydraulic (e.g. Edward F. Obert. Internal Combustion Engines and Air Pollution. Intext Educational Publishers, New York (1973); Dizeli (Diesels). Mashinostroenie, Leningrad (1977); US patents Nos. 4,033,304; 4,079,707; 4,016,841; 4,084,557; 3,156,162; 3,161,112; 3,185,137; 3,185,138; 3,303,831; 3,311,096; 3,402,662; 3,418,982; 3,450,111; 3,417,738; 3,417,739; 3,450,112; 3,527,265; 3,405,698; 3,405,697; 3,405,113; 3,407,791; 3,667,433; 3,704,695 and many others). The known devices do not accumulate the energy corresponding to the restricted pressure and, therefore, increase the fuel consumption. That is why another objective of the present invention is to accumulate this energy and then give it back.
Still another objective of this invention is to get the expansion and exhaust which are more complete by their longer lasting strokes (the complete-expansion cycle is described, for example, in above Obert’s book). The cycle with longer strokes for expansion and exhaust, than for induction and compression, is used in a convenient engine (US patents Nos. 4,033,304 and 4,084,557), swing-beam engines (Canadian patent No. 1 020 094 and US patent No. 4,092,957), Swing-Beam Engine. Automotive Engineer, August/September, 1977; David Scott. Quiet Swing-Beam Diesel has Variable Compression Ratio. Automotive Engineering, April 1977) and a cam engine (H. Quigley. The K-Cycle. Canadian Aviation, February 1977; British patent No. 1,467,969 and US patent No. 4,022,167).
Still another objective of the present invention is to decrease the quantity of elements for swing-beam engines by one linkage and joint.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Above objectives are achieved by providing the kinematic chain of the engines with a resiliently biased means to displace when the gas pressure in the cylinder reaches a predetermined value, to store the gas excess energy gas and release it back during returning the resiliently biased means to the initial position.
The resiliently biased means represents a connecting rod, a rocker beam, a piston rod, or a connecting traverse shaped as one or several springs, such as disc springs, placed in at least one gap between the piston, piston rod, joint with the crankshaft, and a telescopic joint of a piston rod. The latter is made of telescopically connected parts. The joint can be made of elastic materials, such as rubber and plastic (e.g. neoprene).
The elastic joint can have its internal collar biased the piston and taking up the middle position during the operation.
In one embodiment, the resiliently biased means represents the spring-actuated movable support of the fulcrums of the rocker beams.
The natural oscillating frequency of said means can be close to the forced frequency caused by the piston motions at the rated engine speed.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

A conventional engine (Fig. 1) has a piston 1, a cylinder 2, an inlet 3, an outlet 4 and a crankshaft 5 connected to the piston 1 with a connecting rod 6, a crank 7 and joints 8 and 9. The connecting rod 6 is shaped as a leaf spring (the resiliently biased means).
In a swing-beam engine (I.I. Artobolevsky, Mechanisms in Modern Engineering Design. Mir Publishers, Moscow, 1975, v. 2; L.J.K. Setright, Some Unusual Engines, Mechanical Engineering Publications Ltd., London (1975); Arthur W. Judge, High Speed Diesel Engines, Chapman & Hall, London (1967); K.G. Draper, The Two-Stroke Engine, Henley-on-Themes (1968); Arthur W. Judge, Automobile Engines, R. Bentley, Cambridge, Mass. (1965); J.N. Seale, Questions and Answers on Diesel Engines, Drake Publishers, N.Y. (1972), different combinations of leaf-spring elements are conditionally shown in Fig. 2 only in way of illustration.
Here opposed pistons 1 are linked with connecting rods 6 by of rocker beams 12, many variations being possible. For example, either all the elements of the kinematic chain, or even only one, can be shaped as a leaf spring, and an elastic joint 13 in the fulcrums of the beams 12 can be used. Depending on the flexibility of the kinematic chain elements, a piston rod 14 shown in the right side of Fig. 2 can be omitted (shown in the left). This simplifies the chain.
The elastic joint 13 can be made of materials such as rubber or plastic, e.g. neoprene.
For a better compensation of the deformation caused by the piston motions in swing-beam engines, the elastic joint 13 can have its internal collar 15 biased to the piston and taking up the middle position during its operation (Fig. 4 and 5).
Swing-beam engines with the fulcrums in the beams ends (Fig. 6-9) are more advanced, the expansion and exhaust strokes being longer, than for induction and compression (see above cited Canadian patent, Automotive Engineer and Automotive Engineering, for advantages and disadvantages of different types of awing-beam engines).
Again, many variations are possible.
The fulcrums 13 are placed in the ends of the beams 12 at either the pistons 1 (Fig. 6), or the crankshaft 5 (Fig. 7-9). The engines in Fig. 6 and 7 do not have piston rods and, therefore, depend on the flexibility of their elastic fulcrums 13. The engine in Fig. 7 is analogous to that described in cited Scott’s article, wherein, instead of self-centering eccentric sleeves on wrist pins, the elastic joints 13 are employed.
In way of illustration, connecting rods 6 are shaped as a leaf spring in Fig. 6, so are piston rods 14 and rocker beams 12 in Fig. 8 where the fulcrums 13 are either convenient, or elastic.
A leaf spring 16 can be placed between fulcrums 13, the latter being movable (Fig. 9). The necessity of piston rods here depends on the fulcrums degree of freedom.
For engines, such as marine diesels (e.g. German patent No. 655 093 and US patent No. 3,521,615), with two crank gears connecting to the opposite ends of a connecting traverse resting upon a piston rod, the traverse 20 can be shaped as a leaf spring (Fig. 10).
For engines, such as in US patent No. 4,011,842, wherein a traverse rests upon a connecting rod and connects two double-ended pistons of two double-ended cylinders, the connecting traverse 20 has a similar shape (Fig. 11).
In engines with an yoke 25 of Fig. 12 and 13, said resiliently biased means represents disc springs 26 placed in at least one gap between the piston 1, the piston rod 14 and the yoke 25 (in Fig. 12 and 13 both the two variants are conditionally shown together). That is similar to US patents Nos. 2,122,676; 2,122,677; 2,172,670; 3,906,908 and 4,013,048. Besides, the piston rod 14 can be made of two parts 27 and 28 linked telescopically by disc springs 26 (Fig. 14).
The piston rods 14 can be connected to borings 29 of the pistons 1 and yoke 25 by convenient means, such as pins 30 allowing the piston rods 14 to slide relatively to the borings 29, slots 31 restricting the sliding (Fig. 12 and 13), or thread (Fig. 14).
Operation of described resiliently biased means depends on the purpose in hand. If the objective is only to eliminate a piston rod and joint for each cylinder (as can be in Fig. 6 and 7) at the expense of the flexibility of the elastic fulcrums, the cycle of the engine is similar to that of a convenient engine.
If the objective is to decrease the maximum pressure in the combustion chamber, the resiliently biased means does not operate during the compression stroke and low load operation of the engine. Since the pressure in the combustion chamber at this is less, than the preset load of the means, the combustion cycle is similar to that of a conventional engine.
In case of acceleration or high speed driving, the pressure is maximum and the likelihood of knocking, and NO creation increases. The resiliently biased means is compressed when the pressure reaches a predetermined value. At this the volume of the combustion chamber is increased and the means stores energy corresponding to the restrained pressure. When the pressure in the combustion chamber is gradually decreased after combustion, the means steadily extends to return to its normal position and releases the stored energy. Depending on the regime of operating, the maximum pressure decrease can be between 5% and 25%.
If the resiliently biased means return continues after passing the dead center by the piston, the return of the latter is accelerated under spring action, and the stroke completes quicker, than under only crankshaft action. Such a case is shown in P-V diagram (Fig. 15) by the full line, whereas the dash line shows a convenient cycle. At this, the power stroke can be elongated up to 30%.
It is possible, especially for stationary engines, to elevate the engine efficiency by presetting the natural oscillating frequency of the resiliently biased means close to the forced frequency caused by the piston motions at the rated engine speed.
It is clear for those skilled in the art that many other changes and variations of the illustrated embodiments and working cycles are apparent within the scope of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. An internal combustion engine having a cylinder-piston device, an inlet, an exhaust, a crankshaft and a kinematic chain between the latter and said piston, said chain including joints and at least one member of the group consisting of a connecting rod, a rocker beam, a piston rod and a connecting traverse, wherein said kinematic chain is provided with a resiliently biased means to displace when the gas pressure in said cylinder reaches a predetermined value, to store the gas excess energy and release it during returning the resiliently biased means to its initial position.
2. The engine of claim 1 wherein said resiliently biased means represents at least one said member shaped as a spring.
3. The engine of claim 1 wherein said resiliently biased means represents at least one said joint made of elastic materials such as rubber or plastic.
4. The engine of claim 3 wherein said elastic joint has its internal collar biased to the cylinder and taking up the middle position during the operation.
5. The engine of claim 1 wherein said resiliently biased means represents the spring-actuated movable support of the rocker beams fulcrums.
6. The engine of claim 1 wherein said resiliently biased means represents a spring, such as disc springs, placed in at least one gap between said piston, piston rod, joint with said crankshaft, and in a telescopic joint of said piston rod made of telescopically connected parts.
7. The engine of claim 1 wherein the natural oscillating frequency of said resiliently biased means is close to the forced frequency caused by the piston motions at the rated engine speed.

Impressions of Apartment Living
Who’s that stomping on the floor in the deep of night?
Whose voices muffled do I hear?
Is it deadly foe, or someone I know?
The floors are creaking, water is running,
Telephones ringing, someone singing,
Someone knocking on a door, perhaps the next floor,
Could it be friends coming to visit?
Laughter down the hall, someone pounding on a wall,
Crying in the middle of the night, something’s not right,
Emotions are being shared, but not with me,
And throughout the din, my walls keep closing in,
Smells of a barbeque from a party upstairs,
And I wish I’d been invited by someone who cares,
T.V. programs endless, finding something to do,
Four blank walls and no one to talk to,
Exercising to keep up strength, but please leave no time to think,
Checking the mailbox, walking to the store,
I’m busy, yes, but there has to be more,
Perhaps someone will visit, either friend or kin,
Because when I’m alone, my walls keep closing in.

In life we draw many conclusions when we talk about success and failure. We look at our peers and o

In life we draw many conclusions when we talk about success and failure. We look at our peers and others around us and we judge these people by the results we see or the results we don’t see. Just think about a celebrity that we admire or someone in your community that you look up too. Perhaps there is someone in your life that has overcome circumstances and still achieved greatness.

Now spin the wheel. There are people who we know that have habits or perhaps we have habits. Life has a way of knocking us down sometimes and it is really hard to get back up. Maybe these habits have ripple effects like damaged relationships or financial shortfalls. Some of us have seen people in hardship and wondered how that person got there. Others are sitting in our chair reading this and wondering why we’re at that place. All in all life has it’s ups and downs and sometimes we think it’s more down than up. So, what can we do so spring up from our chair? What can we do to stop sitting down in our problems and start walking through them? Where can we turn when life’s paths are hindering us?

I can relate to these feelings and emotions. I confess that at times I get pushed back and feel like just complaining about life’s wrong turns and upsets. I’ve sad in my misery at times and I’ve wallowed about my upsets. I have also been discouraged at the actions of others. A little story from my life may be very relatable to you. I have for nearly 10 years been a landlord. I’ve owned many properties and have rented to hundreds of different tenants. Through this time I’ve experienced the heights of disrespect as people have left my houses in huge repair and damage. I’ve had tenants take pellet guns and shoot holes in the walls, Tear up carpets, smash down doors, break windows and stain carpets beyond cleaning. this week a tenant failed to pay rent and left my house with a broken window. When this happens you do feel taken advantage of. Later in this column I will use these set backs as an example of how to apply one amazing secret to success.

In these same ways you may have some situation in your life that’s left you deflated, disrespected or taken advantage of. Identify with these feelings and emotions and taken a few moments to be real about them. And now! Practise a “ONE VERY POWERFUL TOOL FOR SUCCESS!”

IT’S A VERY SIMPLE PRINCIPLE, YET VERY PROFOUND. SO MUCH SO THAT IF YOU HARNESSED IT YOU WOULD BE LIVING WITH MORE ABUNDANCE AND SUCCESS IN YOUR LIFE. HERE IT IS, ARE YOU READY FOR IT?

ONE AMAZING SECRET TO SUCCESS IS WHEN YOU GET KNOCKED DOWN, GET BACK UP AND KEEP MOVING FORWARD!

In life we’re all going to be knocked to the ground. We’re all going to get beat up by life sometimes. We’re all going to get knocked down. We’re all going to feel the hurt of other people’s choices as they come crashing down on us. Some of these bombs will be dropped on us unexpectedly and knock us to the ground in an instant. Marriage can be hard, career choices can be hard, knowing which way to turn can be hard, friendships can be hard, losing loved ones is hard, longing o be with someone and have it not happen is hard, getting out from under a desolate cloud of despair and defeat is hard, recovering from addictions is hard, finding out how to make ends meet is hard… The ache of life may be more than you’re able. Hold on, don’t give up. Don’t close your eyes. The light will break through the clouds. When we step out from under defeat and bounce back from life’s hard blows we come back stronger than before. Stronger than ever. I petition you to hold on, don’t give up. Get back up when you get knocked down. Keep moving forward. Move forward and steady yourself for your next hit because it will come. The next hit may not knock you to the ground because you’ll have a stronger fortitude from hits you’ve already taken. Now if you get knocked down the next time. Don’t despair. Get back up, life is always worth fighting for. There is always hope and there is always light. After all our reward is not really here on earth.

In a previous job I was required to make a lot of cold calls to businesses. At times it was difficult to pick the phone back up and make another call after a series of hang ups or calls with little result. A friend at this job (and Rocky when you read this you know who you are) and I would quote Rocky Balboa when we got knocked down. We’d quote Rocky VI ”The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place It will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me or nobody is going to hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit, it is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much can you take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!” Click the following link to view the expanded version of this inspirational speech.

Relating this amazing secret to success with my disappointments with tenants I derive these new perspectives. First I have accepted that the prize of having rental properties being paid off and the reward of income out weighs the negatives that do come from some tenants disrespect. Second I like to think of these types of situations as riding a roller coaster. I bought a ticket for a roller coaster ride when I purchased my first rental property. I may be afraid of the spins and turns on that ride at times but I remind myself that I bought the ticket for the ride and I’ve got to ride it. There’s no getting off half way. I might as well enjoy the ride. Thirdly, I can always learn from the challenges that knocked me down to minimize the change of another set back. Fourthly I Will Get back up and move forward. The faster I get back up and move forward the stronger I’ll be and the better I’ll feel about my situation. Additionally I’ve learnt through all types of set backs that it’s best to get back up as fast as you can and move forward. The people who have become the most successful at things in life have suffered many set backs. Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Mozart and Mother Theresa all took hits but they never gave up. The got back up and kept on moving forward. The faster you get back up when you take a hit the more you’ll be able to take the next time and the more you move forward and learn from your past hits the more you’ll avoid future hits. “It ain’t about how hard you hit, it is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much can you take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”

This weeks Reflect and Apply

Reflect on the hits that life is giving you. Now think of what it would be like if you stayed down for a minute longer… an hour longer… a day longer… a month longer… What would you life be like if you stayed down that long?

Now Reflect on the hits that life is giving you again. Now think of what it would be like if you got up from your current hit. Then you got hit again, and again and again but each time you got stronger and you keeped on getting up and moving forward. Then you relatized one day that that it didn’t really matter how many times life hit you, it only mattered that you got back up and kept moving forward.

[Ttok Ttok Ttok / Knocking].

~4Men – 똑똑똑 [Ttok Ttok Ttok / Knocking]~

~4Men – Everything / 똑똑똑 [Ttok Ttok Ttok / Knocking] Part 2~

Mike Tyson was arrested at LAX Wednesday following an altercation with a paparazzo. Tyson was being photographed as he arrived at LAX with his family, when he lashed out at the unsuspecting photographer, knocking him cold and sending him to the hospital. Tyson broke the photographer’s camera, but more importantly, his nose. A police source said, “Mike Tyson was arrested at 4:39 pm at LAX terminal 7, United ticketing. The victim of the alleged assault was transported to a nearby hospital.”

Drama seems to follow the troubled ex boxing champ where ever he goes, with a string of failed marriages, a felony conviction for rape, a declared bankruptcy, a stint in Wonderland rehab center in Los Angeles and the recent tragic and untimely death of his young daughter behind him.

It’s hard enough for most people to get private time at home. The phone rings, the food’s boiling, the kids (if you have them) are slamming each other’s heads into things. When you’re in public, private time is obviously more scarce. That’s why I always treasure some good stall time in my local camode, be it at Target, CVS, or whatever bar/club I’m in. Except for some reason, there are people that think that banging on a closed and locked bathroom stall is a good idea. What is the damn point of this? Who is looking to spend any more time in the stall than they need to, and what business is it of yours to be the determiner of whether I’ve spent enough time in there or not. Trust me, if you’re knocking on the door and I’m not ready, you don’t want me coming out.

It’s like pressing an elevator button, seeing it light up, standing there for a couple of seconds, and pressing it again. Look, the elevator gets it. That’s why the button lit up. I know other people want to use the toilet, but that doesn’t make the bowels move any faster. The emergency of you having to go has zero bearing on this at all, although trust me, I wish it did. If you knock on bathroom stall doors when you know someone is inside, YOU AM DUMB.

A HOME-TRAINED, self-professed Taoist medium, all of 16 years old, convinced six teenagers including his brother to enter into a suicide pact.

Ku Witaya had them in thrall to his theory that the world was coming to an end, and that to save it, they had to ’sacrifice’ themselves.

He and childhood friend, Sia Chan Hong (above) leapt from Witaya's ninth floor bedroom window.

But when it came to carrying out the pact on Aug 23, only he and his close friend, Sia Chan Hong, saw it through by leaping out of the ninth floor bedroom window of his home.

The other five came to their senses when they saw Witaya dead and heard Chan Hong, 16, moaning at the foot of Block 667 Jalan Damai in the Bedok Reservoir area.

Chan Hong died in hospital three hours later.

<img src="http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/7872/a52b.jpg" alt="The boys wrote words like goodbye and last day on earth (above) in their diaries.
At a joint coroner’s inquiry into the deaths of the two Tampines Secondary School students yesterday, a gag order was in force to stop the names of the student witnesses from being published.

The court heard that the group had planned to hold hands and leap from the 13th floor of the block in which Witaya lived, but with the entrance to the rooftop being locked, the group ended up in his bedroom.

Of the two witnesses who took the stand yesterday, one, aged 17 and now a salesman, testified that Witaya had raised the idea of the suicide pact two days before an Aug 22 barbecue to celebrate the birthday of one of their friends.

After most of the guests had left the party early on Aug 23, Witaya again spoke about joint suicides.

This witness said that while the seven of them were in Witaya’s bedroom, one among them changed his mind and urged his friends not to jump.

But Witaya and Chan Hong climbed onto the window ledge and squatted there.

Chan Hong was ‘a little afraid’, he said, so the pair climbed back in. After Witaya calmed him down, the two went back to the ledge. Moments later, they jumped, holding hands.

Asked by State Counsel Ang Feng Qian whether they jumped or had fallen by accident, the witness said an accident was unlikely, as they were ‘prepared’ the second time they climbed out.

The other witness, aged 16, testified that Witaya had bought up the idea of suicide as he wanted to know the ‘truth’ of his beliefs.

Asked by State Counsel Ang what everyone thought of the suicide pact, he replied that they were ‘passionate’ about it.

He said he and Chan Hong had been the most passionate, and that Witaya was unwavering.

He said he and the earlier witness had hidden diaries belonging to the teens in the riser outside Witaya’s flat before the ambulance turned up; he added that they had wanted to keep things under wraps, as it was ‘very complicated’ to others outside the group.

The 17-year-old witness and Witaya’s brother had penned farewell letters.

The investigation officer, Senior Staff Sergeant Edward Wong from the Bedok police division, said Witaya had been introduced to Taoism by his grandmother, Madam Goh Lim Choo, 62, who was formerly a medium. Witaya had been holding rituals and going into a trance at home on Fridays.

A worshipper of the gods of heaven and hell, he had wanted to quit school but was advised by his father, construction contractor Ku Kim Huat, 40, to finish his O levels first.

Investigations showed that in 2006, the group had played war games and the computer game Slayers. Witaya said they were slayers who could kill demons.

In the middle of last year, he told his friends that they had to die to become ’slayers’ to kill those demons threatening the world, which was soon to be shaken up by World War III.

His friends agreed to ’sacrifice’ themselves to become slayers.

A Taoist Federation administrator said in a report that Taoism valued life and that Taoists would not engage in activities that harmed themselves or others.

Neither Witaya, nor the ‘Sheng Long Fu’ group he led, was registered with the federation.

The inquiry before State Coroner Victor Yeo continues.

So why am I up so late writing a blog you may ask yourself. Well the answer to that question would be complex and multifaceted if I was to provide it. Not sure how interesting it would be either, but I suppose it is worthy of a blog post, as if it gets too dull you can always skip onto a more interesting blog input from myself.

The time is currently 5:06am as I write this. A god awful time of the morning. I have already heard the awkward lumbering of a milk float slowly driving around outside about a half hour ago. No bird song loud and proud though, which I expected to kick in around 4am, however I suspect that this neighbourhood may have developed an extensive cat population which may have numbed that morning noise.

I went to bed at a perfectly normal time, as I did last night, however yesterday morning something strange awoke me at about 6.30am. The water pipes seemed to make a loud clanging noise, and it must have been loud, as once asleep I usually sleep quite soundly until an incredibly loud alarm clock (ideally several) wake me, or until I wake naturally.

It seemed a most curious time of the morning for such an occurrence to happen. So much so, I did wonder if the neighbours house could have generated the noise, as their house is conjoined which would explain my hearing it so loudly. For a week or so the water in the house has seemingly behaved in an odd way, and I thought I was just being paranoid. A few days back there was a similar yet less noisy pipe banging in the loft while I was up there myself, however this seemed to occur at around 4pm in the afternoon. At that time yesterday I was out of the house, so if there were any curious noises, I would not have heard them.

I happened to be wide awake tonight when I went to bed. No amount of emailing, facebook games, or laying in the dark twittering could make me dose off. Probably a good thing as I started to churn over the banging pipes noise, and possible causes in my head. Why 6.30am for such a thing to happen? When I was asleep at the time, what could trigger such a thing? There is a timer control for the central heating and the water heating in the kitchen, but I had turned both those off, the central heating was off for summer, and the water heating had been switched off ever since I had thought I had probably just become paranoid about hearing odd watery noises in the house. There had been a problem where some water had leaked through a ceiling in the house a few months ago, and I thought any vague emotional scarring from the experience could just be making me paranoid. But yesterday morning was not paranoia, it was early morning thudding pipes, which I had not liked one bit.

I suddenly recalled whilst the timer switch unit had central heating and water heating switched on it, both of which as I say had been switched off, there was another switch powering this unit which sat in a cupboard. Tonight, when this came to me I went downstairs to this switch and turned it off.

The time is now 5.26am, and as suspected, I have just been and checked and the timer dial has not progressed from the 3am position where I turned off the power switch hidden in the cupboard behind it. This could be kill or cure, so I am here in full pyjamas with flip flops by my bed for easy escape if this all goes horribly wrong. I also have my mobile phone by my bed so I am able to call for help, however who I would call if it all went wrong I do not quite know. I do believe I would be moderately useless, as I recall being such when the water came through the ceiling before. 6.30am is not an ideal time to be trying to find a plumber. The last plumbing related trouble occurred in the dead of night, and I rang several emergency plumber numbers given to me by various 118 services to no avail. Most went to an office voicemail answering system, and one chap I managed to contact was out working on an assignment about 3 counties away, so could only assist via the phone. Whilst well meaning, this advice was near useless. ‘Turn the stop cocks’ he said, but try as I might they were welded firm from several years living in a hard water area.

5.33am. The closer the time moves the more I dread the possible outcome.

This situation has possibly not been helped by the fact I am currently knee deep in moving house. As such I have been making increasingly frequent trips to the loft, bringing box after box down a ladder. The more I take out, the more the boards on the floor of the loft, and thus above my head as I sleep, move with the changing heat of the house as night falls, and day breaks. I keep imagining something slipping in the loft, causing some pile of boxes to tumble, sending one crashing through the ceiling, plummeting with such force it breaks one of my legs, or both, or worse.

These things combined have not made for a very peaceful nights’ sleep the past week or so, leading to my current ‘all nighter’. However I currently have a headache brewing, and so am very hopeful that there are no scary noises, that my switch switching has nipped any problem in the bud, and at 7am I fall back to sleep. If so this will be safe in the knowledge that I have texted the house owner describing the odd noises, timing, and requesting a plumber call.

The clock is currently on 5.42am, and I guess I should finish this blog post for now, just in case something incredibly random does happen and I need to evacuate the house in a bit. This I sincerely hope not to be the case. The first time the timer would have come on under normal circumstances would have been 6.30am, so despite the controls being off for water and heat on the unit, the fact the problem occurred at about 6.30 seems too much of a coincidence to me. I think with power to the clock and it still going round it was triggering something behind the scenes. Hopefully turning off this until ‘at the wall’ so to speak should catch the trigger and stop it until a professional can come out and tackle the problem.

Well, time to save and publish this post. Wish me luck, and hope to post again soon.

and ask ourselves why we exist

Yesterday, I was a fundamentalist Christian. According to my directives for Day 3, I prayed at home,

Yesterday, I was a fundamentalist Christian. According to my directives for Day 3, I prayed at home, worshiped in Church & felt the presence of God as a Holy Spirit. I also suffered a brief crisis of faith last night, in which I prayed at length (aloud & kneeling, I might add) & seemed to receive no answer.

But this morning I saw that I had done a bibliomancy before I fell asleep. My answer?

And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not. (Ruth 2:16).

Perfect.

Today is a new day (I am full of such little profundities lately) & my directives require me to live as a Mormon. I was to: 1. Read over the LDS Articles of Faith before breakfast & “internalize” them. 2. Abstain from all alcohol & drugs including caffeine & nicotine (at this point I am in quite a temper). 3. Dress conservatively. 4. Avoid profanity & vulgarity of any kind. 5. Remember that Jesus is watching me– as if I could do anything else. I have managed so far to do all of these things throughout the day, & I am a better person for it.

& Eternity in an hour...

To feel temptation & not yield is the strangest feeling &, I’m ashamed to say, a fairly new one! I also realize that discipline & the suppression & refocusing of desire is absolutely necessary for faith. If you take all your little worldly wishes & temptations & impure thoughts (didn’t know I had any, btw, but apparently I do!) throughout the day & reformulate them into a desire for God or enlightenment, all that erotic power goes into loving God.

I now see why it is psychologically important for various faiths to fast & practice abstinence, etc. When all gratification is immediate, what do you have to strive for? In some senses,”God” is a code of conduct & the psychological state that emerges from that code. I decided to understand “God” today as an improving structure I could not understand.

I was also supposed to 6. Attend the 1 PM service at the pre-selected LDS Church. 7. Talk to at least three people after the services & discuss how I can best serve Jesus.

I was nervous & a little skeptical, but I found everyone very welcoming & the service was informal & lovely. It was the first Sunday of the month, so after communion (or do they call it communion?) everyone just gave Testimony, coming up to a microphone as the spirit moved them & sharing how their experience with faith & the Mormon church had changed their life. The pews were full of adorable children in their Sunday best, so there was a constant murmur of toddler noise throughout. It was so interesting & moving– I suggest that all of you go to a Mormon testimony service at least once in your life! & if you decide to convert, well, all the better. I don’t know if it’s for me, but it couldn’t hurt to encourage others who might like it.

Afterwards, I spoke to two women from the congregation & two young male missionaries about how they might advise me to better serve Jesus. They met my warmth & open-mindedness with warmth & open-mindedness. The general consensus was through service, Bible study, opening my heart, & spreading the word. Check, check, check, & check!

I related to the missionaries particularly well. Or at least I imagine I did! We bonded a little on how isolating faith can be but also how energizing. After all, I, too, am embarking on a year of chastity, service, & contemplation, operating under total trust in fate. I also have Sundays as my Sabbath, & enjoy sharing the Word (whatever word) as I hear it with all of you! I think what they are doing is perhaps a little (or a lot) more difficult– they were both, after all, only 20 (whereas I’m a wise old 25), & I don’t have to go around knocking on doors & being treated badly for trying to share something good. I implore all of you to be nice to Mormon missionaries! They are, for the most part, nice people who only want to help.

My missionary friends shared a nice rhetorical question from the Book of Mormon that I found particularly relevant & moving:

For how knoweth a man a master whom he has not served and is far from the thoughts and intents of his heart?

I’m of the opinion that all good texts reflect voice of God. Or this is catchier: all good books are Good Books.

Pretend my iPhone is the knocker on your door. Am I totally Mormon or what?!

(sidenote: this should explain why I abhor bad/sloppy art so much! If it’s not God’s work… whose is it? [response]) Anyway, the Book of Mormon, I believe, is no exception. Although I don’t know if I personally believe in the Book of Mormon as scripture, it is certainly a good text which reflects the work of God & has been integral as well in multiple conversions & all the joy (suffering too, but more joy I think) that their faith brings the world.

The sentiment behind the above quotation has been a guiding force behind this whole project(!), but particularly behind my journey in faith this week. I have found, & my Mormon friends corroborate, that if you want to know if God is there, all you really have to do is ask sincerely.

Did you remember? Today was also the day of the Pride parade. In some ways, I was sad to miss it & felt a little left out, but I also knew I had a different calling; today is about restraint & its lessons– not excess. By the time I returned from church & walked through the crowds of people with their beads, I felt at peace about everything. It was a complicated sense of peace, but a genuine one.

(What is it about religious experience that makes it so hard to show without telling? Do most of us experience the spiritual world as a world that tells without showing? Does it make sense that my thoughts & speech begin to parallel this?)

I wouldn’t have been anywhere else today but where I was. The parade would have been fun for me, but what I did today was good for me. I’m beginning to think that fun & goodness may be mutually exclusive. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with choosing fun, really, but it’s a different sort of choice.

This week– this year, in fact, it’s as if I’m undergoing a reverse Rumspringa! Well, good. I sincerely feel I become a better person every day.

Also, I’ve received next week’s schedule, & it promises to be much lighter & more entertaining! So those of you who have been yawning your way through the incense & chanting can get ready for the equivalent of ice cream– if you pay attention & behave yourselves!

All I have left to do is 8. Write Neal an essay & 9. Say my prayers. I’m going to go out & get some dinner then return for the rest of my tasks.

Ea reuseste sa aduca in urechile ascultatorilor versuri inaltatoare, puternice si cu mesaj concis.

So many billions, so many billions of bullets we’ve become,
We are civilians, we are civilians but just do not give us guns.
Coz I would shoot you down from the side,
Just like you would me,
We’ve lost nothing, and besides,
I’ll just become a thief.
Someone’s knocking on the door you know,
We’ve got so many things to hide
Did you listen to the radio? Do you know what’s happening outside?
This is a market, this is a market you can buy anything you want,
A flying carpet, a flying carpet for your car when youre in a rush
I don’t want to buy a gun,
Even though I can,
I wouldn’t shoot you, I would run,
But I’m still an evil man.
Someone’s knocking on the door you know,
We’ve got so many things to hide
Did you listen to the radio? Do you know what’s happening outside?

The engine in my Camaro engine is not breathing the way it should and is therefore a bit exhausted.

The engine in my Camaro engine is not breathing the way it should and is therefore a bit exhausted.

For some time I have felt that the engine was lacking power. And after doing a 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) test the car was a whole second slower that it used to be. Later a knocking sound could come and go untill the beginning of this week the knocking sound would stay when pushing it only a bit.

A quick check of the engine reviled that the exhaust valve on cylinder #6 is not opening as much as it should. So either the cam, the lifter or the push rod or all of them need to be changed.

Another thing I found looking through the engine:

The weights in the distributor have been torn by the pins that hold them and you could easily move them from side to side and up and down. Not something I have seen before.

When you say the word MOBILE, it brings to mind on-the-fly service that may or may not be thorough.

When you say the word MOBILE, it brings to mind on-the-fly service that may or may not be thorough. In the mobile car industry though, the word “mobile” has been given new meaning, because it represents a lot more than a mechanic doing the quickest job possible so he or she can move on to the next customer. Mobile car care services are a means of providing convenient and thorough services for a whole range of auto problems.

In Australia, there were 1,012,164 new cars purchased making a total of 15,296,542 autos on the road. That’s a lot of cars and over time these cars are sold from person to person, driven from state to state, move with their owners, and many of them land right in Victoria and especially in the busy Melbourne area. All of these cars, probably without exception, are going to need servicing for one reason or another many times throughout their lifetimes.

Parked in the Driveway or on the Highway

Mobile car care assistance is for roadside assistance, but not necessarily just for those on the highways and byways of Australia. This kind of great service can be completed with your car parked in your driveway or in the parking lot at work. It can be the car refusing to start after enjoying a meal out at the local restaurant or the auto which seemed to be working just fine when you dropped your son off at school that morning.

In other words, mobile car services mean bringing a variety of repair services to the spot where your car sits whether it’s a highway, parking lot, front yard or at your friend’s house. And because mobile services emphasize service as much as concentrating on being mobile, there is a whole range of high quality car repair services which are now provided thanks to technology and extensive auto technician training.

More Than Batteries and Tires

A lot has changed since the days when mobile mechanics mostly replaced batteries and changed tires. The newest mobile diagnostic equipment which fits in a van enables mechanics to perform extensive evaluations on autos as if the car is in a shop. The repair services offered had to fit the new auto technology which has lead to a wealth of mobile services that can now be provided on the spot.

* Electrical repairs

* Air conditioning recharging and repairs

* Periodic maintenance

* Transmission repairs

* Engine repairs

Clunking, Squealing, and Knocking

Of course, this list still doesn’t give you a true idea of the many different kinds of services offered by mobile mechanics. Everything from simple horn repairs to complex engine replacements can be completed by mobile car services today. Following is a brief list just to give you a good picture of why you can rely on your mobile mechanic when the car refuses to act properly.

* Transmission oil leaks

* Misfires

* Air conditioning blows warm air

* Fluctuating idle

* Engine lights lit

* Squealing noises

* Won’t start

* Electrical shorts

* Alternator problems

* Fuel injection issues

* Brake problems

* Tune-ups

* Engine knocking

It’s amazing how many different sounds a car engine can make when something is going wrong. Your car often talks to you when it’s not working properly by making odd noises. The mobile mechanic speaks the language and can interpret those clunking, squealing, and knocking sounds.

Mobile car care services are extensive and thorough and able to provide both individual and fleet auto maintenance and repairs. So don’t think it’s only your tires and battery which can benefit from mobile car care services. It’s the whole car that benefits!

Matthew 7:7-11 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be open

Matthew 7:7-11
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Commentary:
Verse 7 tells us to pray although it doesn’t use the word “Prayer”. It refers to Ask, Seek and Knock. In all cases the answers to asking, seeking and knocking are answered in the affirmative. It speaks to the mercy our Heavenly Father has for us.

Verse 9-10 speak to the mercy of our Father in Heaven. He uses an analogy comparing mortal fathers to Him. Would a father give his son a stone if the son asked for bread? Would a father give a serpent to his child ifthe child asked for a fish? In the vast majority of cases parents would not deny their children proper food.

Verse 11 So if we “being evil” or mortal men subject to the temptations and fralities of mortality can give a good gift, it stands to reason that God, our Father being perfect can give good gifts.

This verse taken as a whole also conveys a great message, both direct and implied. We are told to pray (ask, seek and knock) and that we have a Father in Heaven, far superior to any earthly parent. If we will pray to our Father in Heaven who is perfect will give good gifts.

I like the phrase “our Father being perfect can give good gifts). it doesn’t say we will get exactly want we want, they way we want but rather we will receive good gifts.

Lets go back to the analogy of the earther parents. A child approaches her parents asking for a fish. The parents will not give a serpant but they may take the child to the river or lake and teach the child to fish, thus giving her a fish and teaching her in the process. This is two good gifts the child received from loving parents.

What can we expect from our perfect Father in Heaven? In His infinate wisdom He will answer our prayers in a manner best suited to our needs. We, being mortal may know we have a need. We’re hungry, we know we need food but the answer to our prayer for food may come less direct but far more profound.

Also, remember what it says in Matthew 6:10? There is a phrase that needs to be in our prayers and heart felt. The phrase is “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven”.

Also speaking to the love our Father in Heaven has for us refer to James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

We can approach our Father in Heaven without fear of being upbraided. God give to His children liberally. Sometimes we have to wait or watch for the answers to prayers because he may being giving us a fish by teaching us how to fish. James also teaches in chapter 1:6 ”But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.” We need to know that we will receive when we pray (faith) but as James points out in chapter 4 verse 3 “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, they ye may consume it upon your lusts.

So among the lessons learned in this commentary: We should ask for what we need not for greed. We need to pray to our Father in Heaven according to the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, “He that asketh in the Spirit asketh according to the will of God; wherefore it is done even as he asketh.”

Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart.

  Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground.
