Pew Research Quiz: GOP Voters and Independets Know More Than Dems, but American Electorate Generally Ignorant

A recent scientific survey by the Pew Research Center shows that the American electorate is generally ignorant of the issues on which they vote.

Before you read further, you can take an unscientific version of this quiz online to see how you stack up.

The below table shows the partisan divide on political knowledge.

The partisan divide is interesting in several ways. In all questions except one, Republicans were more knowledgeable than Democrats. For example, 12% more Republicans knew that Cap and Trade legislation deals with the environment.

12% more Republicans also knew that Sonia Sotomayor was the most recently appointed Supreme Court Justice–a startling statistic, considering she was President Obama’s nominee.

Even on the question asking which party commands a majority in the house, Republican voters had a double-digit lead over Democratic voters, with 84% of Republican voters correctly identifying the Democratic party as the party with a majority in the House and only 74% of Democratic voters identifying their own party as the one in power.

When it comes to unemployment, 58% of Republican voters correctly said that unemployment was closest to 10%, along with 49% of Democratic voters.

The only question that more Democrats answered correctly than Republicans–67%-62%–was the question asking whether U.S. healthcare spending was higher, lower, or the same as in Europe.

Generally, Independents were closest to Republicans in their answers. There were five questions where they scored a higher percentage than either Democrats or Republicans, and only three questions where they scored lower than either Democrats or Republicans.

Overall, Republicans and Independents both averaged a correct tally of 5.7 out of 12, while Democrats average 5.0 out of 12.

Either way, this survey shows that the American electoral in general (Democrats, Republicans, and Independents) is ignorant. Only 2% of respondents were able to answer all twelve of these pertinent questions correctly. Only 44% of respondents were able to answer six questions correctly. Meanwhile, 11% couldn’t even answer two.

The New Media Journal has an interesting take on the results:

In 1857, the British social philosopher, T.B. Macaulay, suggested that our U.S. Constitution was “all sail and no anchor.” Declaring that he had “long been convinced that institutions purely democratic must, sooner or later, destroy liberty or civilization, or both,” he rejected the notion that the supreme authority in a state “ought to be entrusted to the majority of citizens… to the poorest and most ignorant part of society.”

Now it appears that, with the arrival of Barack Obama and today’s Democratic Party, the day of which Macaulay warned has now arrived. A clear majority of American voters have now discovered that, through their ballots, they have the ability to vote benefits for themselves from the public treasury.

Is it likely, or even possible, that we will ever see the day when we can look upon an educated and informed electorate with pride and confidence? The answer to that question will likely become obvious in the November 2010 elections. It may well be our last chance.

One starts to wonder if it would be a bad idea to consider requiring voters to electronically answer a 10-item questionnaire along with their vote, and have their vote count based on the percentage of questions they answered correctly. Now, I know you’re going to immediately shout “Jim Crow!” However, as New Media Journal points out:

In the century between 1865 and 1964, southern voters were often subjected to a brief quiz before being allowed to vote. Whites were asked real brain-twisters such as, “Who is buried in Grant’s tomb? While anyone with dark skin might be required to describe the first four sections of the 14th Amendment. As a testament to the quality of public education today, liberals and Democrats tend to forget, if they ever knew, that it was Democrats who used that technique.

So, in essence, would it be a bad idea to require voters today to answer basic questions about politics along with their vote? An electronic means would make sure no discrimination (like with Jim Crow), and everyone would be presented with the same questions. It would certainly help to make sure that our electorate was more informed, and also encourage voters to get brushed up on politics before they vote so that they can make an informed decision.

Just an honest thought.
