Współtwórca rewolucji w muzyce lat 90-tych, zapoczątkowanej przez pochodzącą z Bristolu „Wielką Trójcę” trip-hopu, usunął się w cień na pięć lat. Trudno mu się dziwić, ostatni krążek „Vulnerable” wyjawił gorzką prawdę: Król jest nagi. „Juxtapose” zwiastowało początek końca, z każdą kolejną płytą topniała nadzieja na powrót bristolczyka do dawnej formy. Nie był odosobnionym przypadkiem, kryzys dotknął cały trip-hop. Motywacja Thawsa do tworzenia kolejnych płyt nie była tajemnicą – było to wyłącznie dla mamony. Po premierze rewelacyjnego „Third” Portishead i zapowiedziach Massive Attack o pracy nad nowym projektem, przyszedł czas na odpowiedź Tricky’ego.

Znudzony pogonią za amerykańskim snem, aby odnaleźć wenę, zwrócił się w kierunku swoich korzeni. Wrócił do Wielkiej Brytanii, by nagrać concept album związany z miejscem, w którym się wychował – białym gettem, okrytą złą sławą dzielnicą Bristolu Knowle West. Tam też jeszcze przed osiągnięciem statusu gwiazdy trafił do więzienia, ten okres komentuje krótko: „Więzienie to świetna sprawa, nigdy tam nie wrócę”. Jego nauczyciel radził: „Jeżeli złożycie podanie o pracę i powiecie, że stąd pochodzicie, nie dostaniecie jej”. Tricky znalazł sposób, aby zdobyć szczyt i poczuł, że nadszedł czas stworzyć coś dla ludzi stamtąd. W zamyśle twórcy ten longplay miał oferować alternatywę dla „emocji z second handu”, wielokrotnie deklarował osobisty stosunek do swojego nowego dzieła, miejscami autobiograficznego – w akustycznej balladzie „School Gates” wyjawia tęsknotę za własnym dzieckiem, z którym do dziś nie nawiązał kontaktu. Czy sentymentalna podróż pomogła mu w odzyskaniu kondycji muzycznej?

„Maxinquaye” to arcydzieło, które podniosło podróż paranoika w najmroczniejsze zakamarki własnej duszy do rangi sztuki. To genialna czarna komedia, pamiętnik z dna, uchwycenie człowieczeństwa alkoholika i ćpuna, szczęście, smutek i szaleństwo zlewające się w jedno monstrum. Na niej ukształtowały się elementy charakterystyczne dla Tricky’ego: minimalizm, schizofreniczny klimat, charczący szept skontrastowany ze śpiewem Martiny Topley-Bird, eksperymentowanie z muzyką, przekraczanie granic gatunkowych, zniekształcone brzmienie, teksty opisujące toksyczne relacje damsko-męskie. Jak mówi sam Tricky, w jego utworach to wokalistki w przeciwieństwie do niego emanują siłą; pisze teksty z perspektywy kobiety, dlatego potrzebuje, aby zaśpiewała je płeć piękna. Bawi się tym i przekracza granice – jak w zainspirowanym „Ostatnim kuszeniem Chrystusa” utworze „Cross to Bear”, gdzie pochodząca z Islandii Hafdís Huld wciela się w rolę Jezusa, który buntuje się przeciw woli Boga z powodu miłości do Marii Magdaleny.

„Ludzie widzą we mnie Księcia Ciemności, ale ja uwielbiam pop” – Thaws jest szczery do bólu. Siłą „Knowle West Boy” jest różnorodność: łączy charakterystyczne dla dwóch pierwszych albumów brudne, mroczne downtempo, pop (daleki od banalnego brzmienia), jak i eklektyczną paletę gatunków, utrzymując przy tym równy, wysoki poziom od początku do końca. W duecie producenckim ze Switch’em potrafił stworzyć spójny materiał, umiejętnie wykorzystując swoje doświadczenie. W przeciwieństwie do „Maxinquaye”, gdzie ważną rolę odgrywał szum, tu spoiwem jest cisza. Paradoksalnie, to właśnie ta sterylna atmosfera, brak przypadkowych dźwięków wnosi do utworów, niezależnie od gatunku, duch brystolskiej sceny. Ryzyko związane z zaproszeniem do studia mało znanych lub debiutujących wykonawców, opłaciło się – często to oni z pozornie ogranych pomysłów potrafią uczynić doskonałe tło do pełnego zaprezentowania własnego talentu.

Płytę otwiera „Puppy Toy”, gdzie u boku Tricky’ego występuje Alex Mills, z głosem podobnym do Christiny Aguilery (pytanie czy to komplement, a może jednak pocałunek śmierci). Bluesowe pianino przenosi nas do baru retro, zatopionego w zapachu wytrawnych drinków i gęstego, papierosowego dymu. Rodigan, mieszkający w Nowym Jorku muzyk z jamajskimi korzeniami, nadaje dźwiękom hip-hopu, ragga, reggae, dancehall czy R&B własny charakter. W parze „Bacative” i „Baligaga” moim faworytem jest ten pierwszy. Mieszankę rapu, ambientowych wstawek, mamroczącego w tle Thawsa, surowej perkusji i subtelnego refrenu – pozornie niedorzeczny chaos – Tricky potrafił zamienić w wyłamujący się schematom przyjemny utwór. Na uwagę zasługują też neo-soulowy „Joseph”, „Veronika” (electro ze śmiercią w tle), „Coalition” (odgłosy wojny przeplecione rapowanymi tekstami o tematyce społecznej, zakończone retorycznym pytaniem How can I be surrounded by people and still be lonely?), brudny, ale wciąż łatwo wpadający w ucho cover „Slow” Kylie Minogue i najbardziej zbliżony do wczesnych dokonań Tricky’ego „Past Mistake” w duecie z Lubną. Najjaśniej świeci inspirowany muzyką zespołu The Specials „Council Estate” rozpoczynający się fragmentem „Roads” Portishead. „To pierwszy singiel tylko ze mną na wokalu. Nie mogłem jej wyszeptać. Musiałem się odsłonić i głośno to wykrzyczeć. Chciałem być odpowiednim wokalistą na tym utworze.” Nic dodać, nic ująć, zarówno w warstwie lirycznej, jak i muzycznej „Council Estate”, choć w innej niż dotychczas formie, ujawnia jego wielki talent.

Plastikowe brzmienie gitary w “C’Mon Baby” i tekst, który głębią dorównuje bubblegum pop lat 70-tych czynią go najsłabszym punktem na płycie. Podobnie rzecz ma się z monotonnym “Far Away”, który ulatuje z pamięci tuż po ostatniej nucie.

„Knowle West Boy” ostatecznie zrywa z trip-hopową przeszłością, pozostawiając po nim dotkliwą pustkę. Brakuje tu mrocznej, czarnej magii charakterystycznej dla początków jego kariery. Szkoda jednak tracić czas na sentymentalne wspominki – Thaws nagrał świetny album; pokazuje, że potrafi wyjść poza granice gatunków i styli, ekperymentować i wciąż zaskakiwać.

Tricky once said that he believes his late-mother is speaking through his raspy vocals. Wednesday night at Hollywood’s Henry Fonda Theatre, there was certainly a mighty testament to the potential truth of this ghostly theory. Emerging with his band in tow, Tricky suavely lit the cigarette between his lips and faced the crowd with mere slivers of his eyeballs visible. Skeptics would probably chalk his eyes’ absence, up to the slowly oozing cigarette smoke; however, considering Tricky’s haunting electronic blues, carried out through his frantic growls, twitches, and sporadic arm-flinging, the Knowle West boy certainly appeared to be clawing at something a bit more metaphysical than nicotine vapor.

Covering everything from Maxinquaye’s Public Enemy-homage “Black Steel” to the piano-powered “Puppy Toy” from his latest effort, Knowle West Boy, Tricky’s jovial delirium was contrasted by female vocalist Francesca. Compared the Tricky’s sometimes agitated romps across the stage, Francesca maintained a glowingly calm presence, gently shifting her bare shoulders to the richly layered beats. Though when the crimson lights did shine on her, she fiercely stung the thumping beats with her eerie pipes. Despite remaining dialed-in to his different dimension, Tricky manifested his meticulous nitpicking, several times halting Francesca’s voice, so other elements could be heard.

After about 6 numbers, Tricky and Co. feigned what would be the first of three encores. However, each return to the stage drew enthusiasm from the remarkably docile crowd. Mum would be proud. Or, perhaps he should be proud of his mum, by way of himself.

I might actually like Tricky and Martina’s version of “Black Steele” better than the original…

one of my favorite songs on the album and the third single off knowle west boy. get on this album if you haven’t yet. then get everything he’s ever done. so, so, so good.

Knowle West Boy is the album that sums up everything that Tricky has accomplished since his 1995 Maxinquaye debut. From the sardonic bar-room blues of Puppy Toy to the haunting quasi-classicism of Joseph; from the twisted Specials-worshipping punk of Council Estate to the bereft torchery of Past Mistake; from the Roxy Music’s The Bogus Man-at-the-dancehall art-stomp of Bacative to the poignant autobiographical tale of teen pregnancy that is School Gates, Knowle West Boy sees our misunderstood hero reaching into the post-punk, Two-Tone, reggae, hip hop and pure pop he grew up adoring, twisting it all into surreal Tricky shapes using his astonishingly accomplished band and a host of great undiscovered singers, and ending up with the most varied and accessible set of his career.

When things get too dark he brings it back to the light with the ebullient pop-rock of C’mon Baby. When things get too relaxed he taunts the world for its cruelty and apathy with the Middle-Eastern hip hop textures of Coalition. Underpinning it all is a theme of rediscovery… the American exile rediscovering his love of dear old Blighty; the veteran rediscovering the joy of making music; the experienced player rediscovering the struggle of being Knowle West’s very own Tricky Kid, the weird but defiant teen outsider who knew that with enough lust for life you could become a superstar. Knowle West Boy tells you everything you always wanted to know about Tricky, over music that still sounds like no-one else on earth.

The title of the latest album from Tricky, Knowle West Boy, is a nod to the area of Bristol, England, that he grew up in, and the album itself is a reflection on youth, though I didn’t see it as a concept album by any means, nor is it necessarily nostalgic or sentimental. It is, however, one of the most satisfying albums I’ve heard from him in years, an expert mixture of electronic, rock, pop and world music elements, some with his trademark raspy vocals, and others duets or else guest vocals by a host of talented collaborators. Some of the tracks fall flat, at least to my ears, like “C’Mon Baby,” but in general it’s a heady, highly listenable trip that memorably evokes the spirit, joy and anxiety of youth. Standout cuts: “Puppy Toy,” “Bacative,” “Council Estate” and “Past Mistake.”

After a 5 year hiatus from the music scene, eccentric “Trip-Hop” artist Tricky drops his most creative albums to date: Knowle West Boy. Europe has had the album for sometime now, but its just been released in North America on Sept. 9th.

Tricky ist zurück. der “Knowle West Boy” hat ein neues Album veröffentlicht, dem man zugute halten muss, dass Tricky nicht den leichten weg von Portishead gegangen ist. Stattdessen Stilwirrwarr, Blues, Reggae, Dub, Punk. Alles auf einmal und nicht immer ausgegoren. Aber immer intensiv. Demnächst auf Tour, quasi Pflichttermin, da mit kompletter Backing Band. Wer weiß außerdem, wann Tricky das Comeback nach dem Comeback plant, diesmal war fünf Jahre Funkstille.

Kritik zum Album auf Tonspion.

Der Kilometer zeigt nach wie vor 145 kg!

Schwimmen habe ich im Moment dran gegeben, weil es draußen zu kalt ist und drinnen zu mühselig, bei den kurzen Bahnen. Fitness im Studio Sport geht gut voran, die Power-Plate ist einfach genial, aber last but not least brauche ich neue Impulse. Ich bekomme Literatur geliehen und hoffe damit weiter zu kommen.

Die Sportwoche mit “jeden Tag Schwimmen” und so sitzt mir noch in den Knochen , war irgendwie voll frustrierend sich so abzurackern für “Nüsse”. Das muss auch anders gehen. Ich will ja schließlich nicht bei Olympia starten. Also will ich erstmal was lesen und dann eine neue Taktik angehen.

Angenehm unangenehm

Wenn Nick Cave „zurück“ nach Tupelo geht und sich mit Filmmusik zu Western, die in seiner Heimat Australien spielen, beschäftigt, so geht TRICKY zurück nach KNOWLE WEST, dem (weißen) Ghetto in Bristol, in dem der heute 40-jährige einst aufwuchs.
Aber noch was haben Cave und Tricky dieser Tage – eigentlich aber schon immer – gemeinsam, den unwiderstehlichen Drang zur „Düsterness“. Beide scheint es immer mal wieder in ein schwarzes Loch zu ziehen, aus dem sie nur wieder herauskommen, wenn sie Songs darüber schreiben.

Whispered trip hop

Tricky apparently loathes the term trip-hop to describe his music, but I would say it’s the best way to describe the music. It is more rounded and full than most trip-hop encompassing quite a lot of singing and guitar, in with the whispered rapping style and low-fi segments of the album.

There are some very contrasting styles, the very slow, minimalist and poetic Joseph, is closely followed followed by a guitar, and keyboard led C’mon Baby and the loud hip-hop shoutings of Council Estate. This contrast of styles creates a nice blend of colours, but doesn’t stray to far from the original objectives.

As well as variants to the left and to the right as far as style, there’s also a vertical shift between the light and dark, as far as the tone of the music. There are some very chilling pieces on the album, the most note worthy being Past Mistake, which send lightning bolts down my spine and nearly caused me to jump out of the window. One of the happier songs, Slow, is about dancing, how much happier could you be?

The album, slots together quite well, all of the pieces fit together smoothly and the finished product is quite wholesome and rather enjoyable.

Review: The Knowle West Boy album website describes the latest trip-hop album from Tricky as “the album that sums up everything that Tricky has accomplished since his 1995 Maxinquaye debut.” It is a pretty accurate description. From classic, slowed-down & tripped-out jams like the lead single Council Estate to the offbeat and heavy tracks like Coalition, this album is true to Tricky’s signature sound. If you are a long-time fan of trip hop, acid jazz, ambient house, lounge or a connoisseur of English-brand trip hop like Leftfield, Massive Attack, Zero 7, the Gorillaz, Thievery Corporation, Radiohead or other uber-chilled out music characterized as Bristol sound, your going to like this album. As usual, Tricky has amazing lyrical collaborators all over the album coupled with mind-blowing beats and grooves. The UK version of this album dropped yesterday and the U.S. release date is schedule for September 9th, 2008. But, us Yanks couldn’t wait and in light of Council Oak’s single drop in the UK a few weeks ago, we had to get right on it. Council Estate and Past Mistake will satisfy those of you searching for that Aftermath - Overcome Tricky. Disliking the trip hop label, Tricky has ventured way outside the lines of such musical stereotype with Knowle West Boy, named after his hometown in Knowle West, Bristol, England. Check out Puppy Toy & Bacative; two entirely different musical journeys, but both really good musically. We like Cross To Bear a lot too with its eerie violin accompaniment. You cant miss this album if your a trip-hop genre or Tricky fan. If your not, pick it up for some zone & drone out music on a rainy day.

No he seguido mucho a Tricky, tras su marcha de Massive Attack, me picaba la curiosidad como sería su nuevo disco y esta repleto de buenas y variadas canciones, desde un corte donde coquetea con el blues hasta cortes como el 4 y el 10 de electrónica más deliciosa que pueda existir. Altamente recomendable

Avance de lo nuevo de Tricky, que aparecerá por julio, y antes estará en nuestro pais tocando en el FIB Heineken.

Personalmente, Tricky no ha levantado cabeza desde Pre-Millenium Tensium, el que para mi es su mejor disco, pero teniendo en cuenta que del fabulous trio de Bristol (Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky) siempre me ha parecido el más sobrevalorado, el tema en cuestión no está del todo mal.
