Lengendary Cross-Over Baller Allen Iverson Set To Retire From N.B.A.

The AP is reporting that the legendary professional Basketball player Allen Iverson is set to announce his retirement from the N.B.A. Iverson , a former Most Valuable Player for the N.B.A. has been in the league since the 1996 season, in which he was drafted in the first round by the Philadelphia 76ers.

He played with the Sixers for 10 years. During his tenure he was Rookie of the Year, League MVP, 2x All-Star MVP, and led the league in scoring for four years. After his rookie season, during which he led the 76ers in points, assists and minutes, Iverson was named the 1996 NBA Rookie of the Year and was a member of the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

The 10-time All-Star played three games this season with Memphis before taking a leave of absence to attend to personal matters. He was waived after the two sides agreed to part ways.

The New York Knicks considered signing Iverson last week after he cleared waivers, before deciding he would take too much playing time away from younger players they are trying to develop.

With no apparent interest from any other NBA teams, Allen Iverson is set to retire.

Iverson will always be credited for popularizing the streetball style move called the cross-over, and for his exciting tricky aggressive driving style of play.

He was never the tallest on the floor, just the most dangerous player that always wanted the ball.

Allen Iverson is a sho-in for the Hall of Fame, and I suspect that he can still run with the best of them, given a team that can design their plays to allow Iverson to shoot at will.

I personally enjoyed the years I got to watch him compete in the NBA, and I look forward to seeing what he does in the future.

Thanks for the 100 percent effort Allen Iverson…you were worth watching and you will be missed.

Rather than the event being hosted inside, the Obama’s or some other nin-com-poop idiot chose to set up a tent in the midst of November for the first State Dinner by The Obama Administration. ”11 additional chandeliers hung from The Tent’s clear ceiling – three large ones were in the middle and four were hung on either side.” Do ya care?

On the menu is potato salad. I wonder if it is the kind with eggs and mustard? Red Potatoes or White? Sooooo not the point.

Really, how low can we go? A tent. I’d like to see the Saudi’s sit in a tent with Obama where he can bend over yet again to bow t0 the King. Serving potato salad? No Kobe beef? Too good for our allies? Oh that’s right, many people from India don’t eat cow- we’ll then throw out some lobsters, snapper, pig, or something other than potato salad for heavens sake.

Our debt is huge and India is an ally during a time when we need all the friends we can get, and this is how we treat our friends? Stick them in a tent. Are the Prime Minister, his wife and The Obama’s having a camping event later this evening? Where are they staying? Jeeesh- I’d hate to be an enemy.

Whose tax dollars are going to pay for the lawn replacement from all the mud? Ahh, The American Recovery Act- creating jobs.

Potato salad is certainly better than what our troops are eating most days even though they sleep in a tent if they are lucky, but is it okay for a dignitary?

November 23rd was the last day of the 2009 Kobe Biennale, which I went to visit last week. The Biennale is held at the waterfront site of Meriken Park, under the shadow of Kobe’s famous Port Tower and right next to the Maritime Museum. Because Kobe is historically a port city, the organizers of the Biennale decided that the best way to mount the exhibition would be to build a temporary village from shipping containers. I’m a huge fan of shipping container architecture, so I was especially excited to visit the exhibit and see how the re-purposed cargo spaces were used the first time I visited the Biennale in 2007 with my friends Joe and Angie.

The 2007 Kobe Biennale featured 45 award-winning works of art mounted in shipping containers in addition to displays featuring ikebana, works by disabled artists, a display of ceramic art, and art made by and for children. The works of art varied widely in terms of idea, execution, and aesthetic effect but all of them were interesting and posed as their own enclosed worlds that served to open up enjoyable spaces for thought and encounter. The piece featured at the top of this entry — consisting of two mirrored panels that come to a point to create a space of unending reflection — is called “Infinite Planet” (無限の惑星) and is by a group from Ishikawa called Star in the TENTEN (天々星組). The piece pictured above is by Song Junnam and Yoon Cyongsu and is called “Kobe People.” Here’s what the artists have to say about this piece: “I am a foreigner who lives in Japan. It’s not rare in Kobe. Usually, I’m a minority, but in this work, I fill it up by the photographs of the foreigner’s faces, who are living in Japan. Through the encounter of foreigners living in Japan, who are also neighbors, I hope you can sense yourself, the foreigners, and Kobe.”

Several of the containers had ikebana on display. The theme at work here was “future ikebana,” and many of the arrangements were truly incredible.

This piece, by Akihiro Kumagaya and Eisuke Tachikawa (熊谷彰博 and 太刀川英輔) was really fantastic. It consisted of a mostly bare container painted white on the inside, which a few desks, chairs, and banks of red markers scattered around. The entryway was constructed from pieces of red plastic so that when you looked through them into the container you (in theory) wouldn’t be able to see what was written on the walls. All of the writing in the container was produced by guests at the Biennale, who were supposed to write down important thoughts, or perhaps childhood memories. It was incredibly fun to add pieces of text to the jumble inside the container, and to spend time walking around and reading what other people had written. This piece is listed as being untitled on the official 2007 Kobe Biennale site, but I remember it being called “What’s Your First Memory?”

This work, simply titled “Zebra,” (しまうま) is by Shibata Michiri (柴田美千里). There’s something deeply uncanny about walking through a container filled with stumpy zebra torsos. I almost felt like I was walking through a zebra snuff film. But at the same time there’s something funny about this piece, as if it were the punchline for a joke that you’ve forgotten the set up for.

This piece, by an artist called ONOYOTONN (小野養豚ん), a name that means “pig-farm,” was one of my favorites at the Biennale. Here’s what ONOYOTONN has to say about the piece, which is called “A Herd” (群): “I grew up on a pig farm and have made many works with pig motifs. With the theme of ‘encounter’, I embodied pig-herding images playfully. I mass-produced mini-pigs so that the container is full of them and enjoyed in the space.” The pigs were made from some kind of wax, and a few of them had fallen from the walls and the ceilings by the time that Angie, Joe, and myself made it to the Biennale. Because of the scattered nature of the pigs there was almost a sense of massacre about the place, and standing inside an area so full of pink fleshiness made me feel a little bit like I was standing inside a piece of intestine. Or perhaps a bit as if I were trapped inside a sausage.

This piece — a webwork of glowing white tubules in a container with mirrored walls — made me feel like I was inside some kind of strange futuristic alien spaceship, or perhaps standing in a scene that never made it into the Matrix series. The piece is by Ryosuke Sai (宰井良輔) of DOLPHIN KICK (ドルフィンキック), which is one of the best names for an arts-oriented design group that I can think of. In the photo above you can see Joe, in the process of snapping this self-portrait.

Here’s Angie standing in front of a chalkboard that was completely covered with a single, extensive, set of of mathematical operations. Across from the chalkboard were several wooden school desks equipped with paper and pencils so that you could sit down in front of the board and work up as much abstract calculation as your heart might desire. So far, so normal. But what you can’t do is sit at the desks without also sitting on an open ceramic toilet, the only seats in the place. This is a piece that makes you think about the relationship between abstraction and bodily functions, and our inability to escape from our animal nature, no matter how hard we might try. The piece, called “Animal Expression,” is by Yamashita Ryuuji (山下竜司) and this is what he has to say about it: “We, human beings, using various materials, escape from the genus named “animals”, against reality. Even if it was impossible.”

This piece by Florian Claar, called “Symphonic Light Chamber,” is meant to sculpturally imitate the structure of 18th-century symphonic compositions. I’m not sure that the piece ended up having that particular effect on me, but as a gloriously futuristic sculptural space I thought it was fantastic. In fact, it felt very 2001 to me — up to and including the final transition in which you step through the circular entrance at the rear of the container and into a black void full of tiny pinpricks of light: “The thing’s hollow—it goes on forever—and—oh my God—it’s full of stars!”

This beautiful work is composed of more than 2,500 letters and characters from different languages from around the world. The colorful writing is illuminated from behind, and walking into this room is a bit like walking into an abstracted conversation in which you’re hearing bits and pieces of the entire planetary population talking at once. This piece, by Noriko Shiozawa (塩澤徳子), is called “Koto-no-ha” (こと‐の‐は), which is an older Japanese word for “language.” Shiozawa-san was kind enough to give her permission to allow the photograph above to be used as the cover for the UNESCO Jakarta Annual Report 2008.

This piece, by Hans Schohl, was called “General Cargo Celestial Mechanics” and consisted of several beautiful kinetic sculptures that were illuminated so that long shadows would be cast on the walls of the container. The sculptures — similar to models of planetary rotation — reminded me vaguely of Aughra’s observatory in The Dark Crystal.

There were far more works at the 2007 Biennale than Joe, Angie, and I were able to see in a single day, and many of the really amazing pieces that we did manage to see weren’t the kind of works that show up well on film. If I had had the opportunity, I would have visited the Biennale over the course of several days, slowly moving from work to work and taking plenty of time for coffee, relaxation, and clearing the head in between. I might even have taken some time to watch the sun set from the top of Kobe’s Port Tower, instead of watching the sun set inside of a container, as beautiful as that in fact turned out to be. The piece above, called “koyomi,” is by Daiichi Shichino (七野大一) and it simulates sunset and moonrise by projecting slowly moving images of light at the end of a container in which a long reflecting pool has been constructed. Inside the container, the images of sun and moon are reflected across the pool which quietly ripples and undulates from localized vibrations within the container. All very dark, quiet, slow, and beautiful.

The Kobe-LeBron death knell

Today I was listening to the NBA Today podcast on iTunes and NBA analyst Ric Bucher had a VERY interesting argument for the Kobe-LeBron debate, and it’s quite simple.

Bucher stated that Pau Gasol’s return and the Lakers’ subsequent success has overshadowed the fact that Kobe is using his post-up game to supplement his perimeter play, which Bucher thinks is a result of Kobe’s dwindling athleticism.

However, Kobe at this point may be better than he was last year.

Kobe is roughly averaging 30 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists a game. He’s shooting 47.4% from the field, which will be a career high if he maintains his shooting stroke (pretty likely since Gasol’s return and Bynum’s continued development should allow for better shot selection).

Anyhow, Bucher’s point was that Kobe has a sophisticated post-up game, which allows him to basically pick how he is going to attack his defender. What impresses Bucher, though, is that Kobe does this at roughly 6′5” (or 6′6”) 210 lbs. while LeBron has NO post-up game despite his 6′8” 265 lbs. body. And, yes, LeBron is at least 260 lbs., if not more, and I think he’s probably grown from the 6′8” stature he had when he came into the league SEVEN years ago.

Bucher added that people can’t use LeBron’s age as an excuse for his unrefined post game because he essentially is referred to as the best or second-best player in the NBA and the pre-eminent star of the league should have no holes in his game.

My assessment:

Kobe is an All-NBA player on both ends of the court, a better jump shooter, post-up player, free-throw shooter, ball handler.

LeBron is a better finisher, passer, and rebounder (which should be taken with a grain of salt because LeBron = Karl Malone in a guards body).

And to be perfectly clear, Kobe’s advantages of LeBron are glaring whereas LeBron’s only distinct advantage to me is as a rebounder (which is largely due to his size, position and the lack of dominant rebounders on his team).

Kobe. Kobe. Kobe. Kobe.

One for each ring. (And screw Shaq, who never made the Finals without an All-NBA SG on his squad. See: Penny Hardaway, Dwyane Wade, and Kobe Bryant.)

Kobe ist heiß und erzielt den Großteil seiner Punkte im LowPost. Als Shooting Guard! Keine guten Nachrichten für den Rest der Liga. Danke nochmal an “The Dream“. Andrew Bynum ist neben Chris Bosh der einzige Spieler der Liga mit 20/10. Kann Andrew endlich mal eine Saison durchspielen, winkt vielleicht sogar das ASG. VierViertel wünscht es ihm. Und nun ist auch noch Pau Gasol zurück. Nach seiner hartnäckigen Oberschenkel-Verletzung ist Pau fit und macht die Lakers noch gefährlicher, weil eben vielseitiger. Apropos, Lamar Odom kehrt freiwillig in die 2nd Unit zurück, sehr zur Überraschung von Phil Jackson. Auch nicht leicht zu bewerkstelligen. Und Shannon macht seine eigene Top10 in jedem Spiel, weil, man weil er einfach höher springt als alle anderen!! Die Lakers machen einen Run, auch weil RonRon eben nicht auffällt, außer durch Defense und Teamspiel. Allen Iverson, you hear me??

Atlanta Hawks
Nach Jahren in den Tiefen der Eastern Conference kann dies das Jahr der Hawks werden. Kleine Veränderungen im Team, große Veränderungen auf dem Court. Letzte Woche waren die Hawks sogar die Nummer 1 in diversen Power Rankings. Alle reiben sich die Augen. Josh Smith nimmt keine dummen Dreier mehr und spielt wirklich Defense. Jamal Crawford gibt der 2nd Unit Scoring Punch. Joe Johnson spielt mal wieder auf All-Star-Level. Und so langsam füllt sich auch die Halle endlich mit Fans. Wird der Höhenflug anhalten?

Dallas Mavericks
10-3? 5-game-winning-streak? Was hab ich verpasst? Heimlich still und leise haben sich die Mavs unter die Spitze der Western Conference geschlichen! Und das ohne Josh Howard und teilweise Shwan Marion…Nowe ist mal wieder in MVP-Form, Jason Terry rockt von der Bank und Kidd, naja Kidd ist immer irgendwie noch Jason Kidd, außer dass er in 13 Spielen nur 2 FTA hatte und mehr Assists (9.1) als Punkte (7.1) macht. Momentan scheint das Team aber einen Run zu haben und gewinnt insbesondere die knappen Spiele. Weiter so!

Verlierer
Orlando Magic
Ich weiß ich weiß. Aber ich spinne nicht! Seit Rashad Lewis von seiner Sperre zurückgekehrt ist, gabs zwar 5 Siege in Folge. Darunter ein wichtiger Sieg gegen Boston. Doch Jameer Nelson hat sich mal wieder verletzt und wird langsam als “fragile” eingestuft. Dies zwingt White Chocolate zu mehr Regular Season Minutes als geplant. Dwight Howard trifft immer noch keine Freiwürfe und Vinsanity wird zum puren Jump-Shooter, 3 FTA pro Spiel sind zu wenig. Außerdem ist die Abhängigkeit vom 3er zu groß. Momentan reichts noch um zu gewinnen, doch dies sind alles Faktoren die bis zu den Playoffs ausgeglichen werden müssen.

Lebron James
Seine Stats sind mal wieder Super. Nach schlechtem Start (0-2) läufts auch wieder rund, seitdem Shaq seine Schulter auf der Bank auskuriert. Aber kann es sein dass sich Bron zum CNN-Reporter aufgeschwungen hat? Kein Tag vergeht ohne das der King nicht zu irgendeinen “wichtigen” Thema Stellung bezieht. Erst die übertriebene und undurchdachte Jordan-Huldigung. Dann die “I could be really good” Sache mit den Cleveland Browns. Schon vor einiger Zeit kam das Thema Lebron und NFL mal auf. Vorher sollte er sich jedoch nochmal das anschauen. Verliert Lebron vielleicht das Interesse am Basketball? Hat Shaq ihm von der schönen Welt abseits des Courts mit Film und Musik erzählt? Oder wird Lebron einfach ein Opfer seines seit frühester Kindheit medial aufgeblasenen und gepushten Egos? Und jetzt scheint eine unangenehme Handgelenks-Verletzung den King auch noch auf dem Court zu behindern. Come on King, Get Focused! Play Ball!

Was ist hier los? Seit CP3 Verletzung gabs Siege gegen Atlanta, Phoenix und die Clippers sowie ne 1-Punkt Niederlage gegen Miami. Ist Darren Collison besser als CP3? Oder haben die Spieler einfach genug von Byron Scotts Coaching-Style gehabt? Hoffen wir mal das es letzteres war und das Talent von CP3 nicht in New Orleans verschwendet wird. Er fällt wohl noch 2 Wochen aus und dann wird man sehen ob das Hoch von Peja & Co nur ein Strohfeuer war oder ob die Hornets wirklich “competitive” sind!!

In a news release from the Associated Press, “Marv Albert denies altercation with rapper 50 Cent,” the 68-year-old voice of basketball said the only beef in his life at press time is in regards to Kobe. According to Kobe’s Wikipedia entry,
