Guccione’s big LH kick serve will trouble Cuevas especially with Cuevas recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered at New Haven last week. Guccione is in pretty good form, putting Tsonga and Kohlschreiber away before playing a poor match against Berdych. Guccione has also played a truckload more matches on hardcourt than Cuevas who is more comfortable on the clay courts. This shouldn’t be too much trouble for the Gooch.

Out of these 2 players, none of them deserve to be a 2.70 outsider, so this is really just a value bet. This could go either way.

Een grote verrassing op dag 1 in het mannentennis. James Blake (17) verliest in straight sets van de Italiaan Andreas Seppi: 5-7, 4-6 en 6-7 (5). Philipp Kohlschreiber (Dui,27) bereikte wel eenvoudig de tweede ronde. Florent Serra uit Frankrijk had geen antwoord: 7-6 (3), 6-1, 6-4.

Tommy Robredo vs Philipp Kohlschreiber

Oh dear. This is a massively tough match to call. I wrote in a previous post that I would put a considerable amount of money on whoever Kohlschreiber was playing due to his erratic tendencies.

Having now seen he is playing Tommy Robredo I am certainly not so confident.

This is a match the German should win in my opinion and that is precisely the reason why I am going to pick Robredo to advance to the next round.

Kohlschreiber had nothing to lose against against Djokovic and was able to play without a hint of pressure. This match will be a different kettle of fish and he will have a degree of expectation on his shoulders which could effect his play.

This match has five set thriller written all over it and I reckon Kohlschreiber will bottle it.

Tommy Haas vs Roger Federer

Federer should stroll this match against the aging Haas. I think the first set will be competitive however after that Federer will dominate.

Juan Martin Del Potro vs Jo Wilfried Tsonga

On any other surface I would have no doubt in my mind that Tsonga would have a great chance of winning.

However clay courts do not suit his gung ho type of play as we have seen from his mediocre results as of late.

Personally I am not a fan of Del Potro but he has chalked up a few good results on the surface.

Like Tsonga he is not the greatest on clay either but his comfortable win against a ‘proper dirtballer’ in Andreev the previous round makes me side with the lanky Argentine.

Gael Monfils vs Andy Roddick

Monfils should get the better of Roddick on this surface however the Frenchman always seems to make life difficult for himself.

Roddick is a fighter and now he has come this far into the draw I am sure he will have been working on a plan to disappoint the French crowd by knocking their favourite player out.

Roddick will need to serve well to keep Monfils at bay.

And if Monfils fails to get into the Roddick service games he may lose confidence and go on the defensive which would allow Roddick to start dictating points.

If this happens we could be in for a long match however Monfils will eventually scrape the win by grinding down the American.

Plus Monfils has points to defend here which is an added incentive for him.

Haas – Federer:
Hass ve Federer toprak kortta ilk defa mücadele edecekler. Nadal ve Djokovic’in turnuvada elenmesinin ardından Federer için şampiyonluk şansı artmış durumda, buna ek olarak Federer bu günlerde inanılmaz formda. Haas 3. turda Fransız Chardy’i eleyerek 4. tura yükselmişti. Federer’in tüm zamanlarda Haas’a karşı 8-2 üstünlüğü var. Federer bu maçı kaybetmesi büyük bir süpriz olacaktır.

Del Potro – Tsonga
Günün maçı diyebileceğimiz bu maçta dünyanın 5 numarası Del Potro ile dünyanın 9 numarası Fransız Tsonga karşılaşacak. Tsonga’nın iyi bir toprak kort oyuncusu olduğunu düşünmüyorum. Del Potro ise son toprak kort turnuvalarında çok iyi bir performans sergiledi. Roma’da çeyrek final, Madrid’te yarı final oynayıp Düseldorf’taki World Team Championship turnuvasında iki maçını da kazandı.Bu maçta Del Potro’yu çok daha şansı görüyorum.

Robredo – Kohlschreiber
Turnuvanın 29 numaralı seribaşı olan Kohlschreiber 3. turda Djokovic’i eleyerek turnuvanın ilk süprizini gerçekleştirmişti. Bir önceki turdaki rakibi de Juan Carlos Ferrero’ydu.Kohschreiber’in rakibi Robredo ise son maçta Gonzalez’i son iki sette adeta sahadan silmişti. Karar vermekte en çok zorlandığım maçlardan biri bu ma diyebilirim. Düsseldorf’taki performansı ve Djokovic’i eleyerek kazandığı moralden dolayı Kohschreiber diyorum.

Roddick – Monfils
Monfils 2008 Roland Garros’un yarı finalisti. Roddick ise bu sene ilk defa Roland Garros’ta 4.tura çıkmayı başardı. Bir çoğunuz çok fazla Monfils’i izlememiş olabilirsiniz ancak Monfils gerçekten iyi bir yetenek. Roddick daha önce Monfils ile oynadığı 2 toprak kort maçını da kaybetti. Ev sahibi olmanın avantajını da kullanacak olan Monfils bence Roddick’i geçecektir.

Nadal! Two-time finalist Nadal beat two-time finalist and 4 times AC champ Roddick
and Djokovic! who completely anihilated poor big Nalby
Now the question is who is the best on grass so far this year?

Djokovic started the tournament poorly, but has mentioned the “transition from clay” as the main reason he gets better every day. Rafa was incredible yesterday and looked more than ready for Wimbledon. What struck me in the Nadal-Roddick match, was how incredible he served all the way through! Always high 1st serve % and kept Roddick guessing for either extreme right or left, with the lefty spin. I actually thougth he was able to use his serve better than what Roddick did. I was really impressed with Rafa, but Roddick seemed a little bored. I didn’t hear any reactions when winning, neither when losing and seemed like the Connors-effect has faded a little bit. I hope he’s more fired up for Wimbledon, or he’ll never get his hands on the golden trophy. Maybe the shoulder is still in the back of his head. I think all players prefer to be 100% for Wimbledon, than 99% in Queens against Rafa.

Then there was Federer who still, IMO, has a more impressive record on grass than Nadal on clay. Less titles, less matches, less factors like injuries and so on, but he hasn’t lost since frickin’ Ancic in 2002!!! And will Kohlschreiber do the damage in the final?! Might give him most headache of the week, but still a straight sets victory for Federer. My question is… is Rafa and Djoko better prepared for Wimbledon, having played some REAL grass threats, while Federer sailes past #340 something, Kiefer, Baggy and so on? We’ll see. But I think both finals are worth watching, if they don’t go at the same time, and show us who is in real grasssy form!

Oh, yeah… Davydenko-Robredo in the Warsaw final…. what a waste of ATP calendar space. Why not make grass season a week longer instead!?
