Just woke up from a killer food coma, thanks to dinner at L’Albatros with the fam. The recent addition to the Cleveland restaurant scene has taken up residence in the old That Place on Bellflower. Great ambience, friendly and intelligent staff and food that blows the mind. I’m just coming off finals week and therefore have averaged maybe 8 hours of sleep in the past week, so I’ve been eating cereal and crack. That said, today was a total reversal of that routine: prato misto and a Young’s Double Chocolate Stout at Sergio’s and at L’Albatros; escargot, cassoulet and a canalé with cherry compote and a Reissdorf Kölsch.

L’Albatros has a decent beer list with some Great Lakes, Orval, Duvel, Old Speckled Hen, Gavroche but with LINDEMAN’S! I have such a pet-peeve when places try to offer lambics but then offer the MOST crap one. Ok that aside, the food is to die for and you’ll be fighting off the “itis” before you know it, but in such a good way.

Beers that suddenly spring up in the LCBO are a quite nice surprise, especially when they’re from Eastern Ontario and previously unavailable to those who don’t live out Ottawa way (technically Vankleek Hill way, but that means nothing to most people, including my Ottawa-born-and-raised girlfriend). When I got my bottle Beau’s Lug Tread Lagered Ale and found that it had been bottled on December 1st, there was even more cause for celebration. Fresh beer that comes in a lovely ceramic bottle from within the province? Sign me up.

But I had to actually taste the beer before getting too excited. One disappointing aspect was the style of beer. I have no idea what defines the kolsch style, but it is German and that usually means a thumbs down from me. The beer poured a light, clear orange with a small white head. The aroma and taste was dominated by grassy hops, making it taste very similar to Lowenbrau. There’s some of the bready malt flavours common in Germanic styles, but everything doesn’t jive to me. This is definitely more of a Summer beer, though, so I’ll give it another shot when the weather does an about face.

It has been quite some time since I last posted and I’m glad to say the traffic through my small blog has kept up quite nicely. Now Don’t get to bent out of shape at me… I come barring excuses.

1. I quite my job to photograph- This excuse should explain itself. There are many pitfalls one can encounter in such an endeavor.
2. Personal reasons- The long and short of it, I’m now on the coast ( Wilmington, NC ) sleeping on the floor of a friends house. This has now been the situation for about a month.

So, I never thought that this would be easy. I never said I would do well at it… But I’m doing it and that is what matters most. Most people don’t get that far. So with that being said, “Sorry to have taken so long”. But in the midst of tragedy some good work has emerged and I’m in full swing, working on my portfolio.

So, in the next couple weeks I’ll so you my NEW, REAL studio and all of it’s gear, as well as updates on my portfolio shoots… but for now. Some new work. Enjoy.

Cologne is an amazing city! I have been there just once and only for a few hours…It is definitely worth to see this metropole city for a whole weekend or even longer.

Here is the link to Cologne’s tourist information which is available in english|german: http://www.koeln.de/cologne_tourist_information

Whenever I find something interesting about Cologne, I will post it here online!

Here are some impressions from Cologne|Köln:

This is the Cathedral in Cologne. Construction of Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 and took, with interruptions, until 1880 to complete – a period of over 600 years.

A incredible festival in Cologne: Cologne’s Carneval which is all in a tumble. Try to visit Cologne during the Carneval Season!

This is Cologne’s most famous beer! It is called “Kölsch” and is exclusively brewed in Cologne. Honestly, it’s okay but Kölsch is not able to keep up with Bavarian beer!

Cologne is a party city!

Be prepared for a special party culture! Cologne is the place to be for parties and clubbing!

There will be more information about Cologne|Köln very soon…

Until then, enjoy my blog

Here I am in Germany! Hubby, son and I arrived bright and early this morning after the overnight tra

Here I am in Germany! Hubby, son and I arrived bright and early this morning after the overnight trans-Atlantic flight. We went from Indy to Atlanta, then an almost 9-hour jaunt into Frankfurt, followed by an hour-long train ride to Cologne and a taxi to the hotel. The flight itself was made ultimately much more bearable by hubby working some voodoo magic on the gate attendant in Atlanta and somehow managing to get us upgraded to first-class seats. Which kicked ALL kinds of ass and set a good tone for the beginning of the trip.

Something you should know before I say any more – I am not a good flier. You’d think after living in L.A. for nearly two years and all the back and forths from there, not to mention 10, count ‘em, 10 trips to Europe, I’d be well over any flying fears I might have harbored. Not so. If anything, my flying anxiety is just as intense now as it ever was. Once we actually get underway and in the air, I’m not too bad, but the anticipation of the trip in the days just prior leaves me frantically checking turbulenceforecast.com and making sure I’m stocked up on Dramamine.

I am sad to say that while the extra space and attention in first-class was HEAVENLY, especially considering we were traveling with a very busy and curious 18-month old, the food was wasted on me. I rarely eat on airplanes. I have a sneaking feeling that eating an airplane meal en route would not sit well on my already-nervous stomach. I can’t imagine hitting turbulence just after downing a nuked lasagna would really be a good idea. And I definitely do not want to be THAT girl.

Hubby is a frequent flier, to say the least. He may even hit diamond/platinum/master of the universe status this year when it comes to frequent flier miles on Northwest/Delta. He crosses oceans like he’s crossing the street. I have lately begun telling him he’s turned into a travel snob, but after getting the first-class treatment on such a long flight, I am shutting my mouth. No wonder he whines like a stuck pig anytime he doesn’t automatically get upgraded and has to sit in, sniff, coach.

Hubby has no problem eating while flying, and I must admit, the menu in first-class was tempting. But I refrained, content to observe hubby with his meal of choice. First course was spinach salad with feta, roasted pepper soup and a scoop of hummus covered in toasted pine nuts. For the main, he had a surf and turf deal with a filet, shrimp, risotto and sugar snap peas. Oh, and free Heineken. It all looked tasty enough, but when it comes to my tummy, I usually try to follow a better-safe-than-sorry mantra if there’s any doubt.

Once we landed in Frankfurt and my feet were back on solid ground, I was hungry. We hit a cafe in the airport where we fed the baby and I scarfed down some scrambled eggs with ham, fresh orange juice and some of my son’s strawberries. Nothing spectacular, but it certainly hit the spot at that moment.

Jet lag has taken its toll on all three of us today. Neither hubby nor I got much sleep on the plane in spite of our lux accommodations, as we took turns baby-wrangling and trying to shush our son anytime he roused, which was often. Have you ever seen footage of those guys who try to wrestle alligators and the alligators end up twisting and rolling about a thousand times a second to escape roping? That’s what it’s like trying to hold our son while he sleeps. He eventually dozed off soundly, thank God, but didn’t get nearly enough rest. By the time we caught the train, made it to our hotel in Cologne and took a quick walk out for some much-needed coffee and a croissant, the sleep-deprivation was really catching up with all of us. A nap was definitely in order.

Hubby spent a month in Cologne last fall, so he knows his way around pretty well. The baby and I were supposed to join him then, but one thing after another went wrong and we never made it. I’ve been to Cologne once before for a weekend when I came over to visit my then-boyfriend, now-hubby five years ago (he was living just outside Frankfurt at the time).

Cologne is an interesting place. The architecture is very old and Gothic, although the city was all but destroyed during the World Wars and much has been repaired. In stark contrast to the cobbled streets and the awe-inspiring Dom that dwarfs everything around it, the city is highly modern, a media capital full of state-of-the-art shopping and hopping nightlife. The city nestles along the Rhine River, providing a scenic viewpoint and a home for charming riverside hotels and restaurants. Cologne is about the same size as the Indianapolis metro area when it comes to population, and I believe is even paired with Indianapolis as a sister city. You’d never mistake the two in a million years, though.

the massive Cologne Dom (Cathedral)

Post-nap, the baby went into the stroller and out we went to get some air and get reacquainted with Cologne. It looked pretty much the same as I remember, and I was able to recognize some of the quaint streets, pubs and restaurants we’d been before, once upon a time. One particular establishment we decided to revisit was Papa Joe’s – a kitschy beer hall kind of place whose main claim to fame is two animatronic musicians, one playing an accordion and one playing some sort of small tuba. These two robotic creatures “play” upon their perch anytime a patron drops in a coin and makes a song selection, much like a jukebox. The figures are a big draw, but it’s vaguely creepy to see their eyes roll your way as they bang out polka classics.

When hubby and I stopped in this place five years ago, the smoking ban hadn’t yet been instituted and it was like a wall of smoke when you walked through the door. We somehow managed to stay for a drink and watched as a group of Japanese tourists entered, then quickly exited, coughing and gagging. Thank goodness, it’s now smoke-free, so we were able to bring our son in for the fun.

Tonight, a small group of rowdy beer-swilling men had taken over the bar, singing loudly along with the traditional German tunes the animatronic duo cranked out, glasses raised and waving proudly. Picture a German bar version of “Piano Man” and you sort of get the idea. And it isn’t just German songs either, there are even a few little ditties in the catalog that I recognize. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard a bunch of drunk middle-aged German men belting out John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Road.” This amusement was followed up by a polka version of, I kid you not, “Billie Jean.” I could hardly believe my ears. It was good, clean fun, and we stayed for a glass of Gaffel Kolsch, the local quaff of choice. The waitress took a shine to Michael, even going so far as to snatch him up out of my arms and whisk him behind the bar for an up-close look at the robot musicians and a few wafer cookies. He blew her a kiss on the way out; now I know we’ll have to go back.

More wandering built up our appetites and after being shut-out of a German pub/restaurant hubby wanted to go to (they were full, apparently), we ended up at a crepe place. These were not your ordinary crepes, though; they were more like large square hot pockets stuffed with a whole menu of tasty fillings. Hubby got one wrapped around a meaty tomato sauce, almost like a spaghetti Bolognese, without the spaghetti. It must have been good because he even tolerated a few specs of onion he spied in the filling. My crepe housed a medley of veggies heavy on the broccoli and onion, with cheese and tomato sauce holding it all together.

Full and tired, we managed to wind our way back to the hotel, where we are trying to prop our eyelids open for another hour or two before finally succumbing to jet lag and sleeping the sleep of the dead. I want to write more, but at the risk of becoming incoherent, I think I’ll save some for tomorrow.

Dein Land braucht Dich!

Frau.

Deswegen werden alle Frauen aufgefordert, am
kommenden Samstag um 14.00 Uhr auf die
Straße
zu gehen, total nackt. Damit helfen sie der
Regierung, unidentifizierte und unerwünschte
Terroristen (sogen. Schläfer) zu
identifizieren. Es wird empfohlen,
mindestens eine Stunde nackt in der
Nachbarschaft umherzugehen, damit der beste
Anti-Terror-Effekt zustande kommt.

Alle Männer werden gebeten, vor ihrem Haus
in
einem Liegestuhl Platz zu nehmen und die
nackten Frauen anzusehen, auch du! Damit
beweist du, dass du nicht Mitglied der
Taliban bist.

Also auch hier drinnen.

Okay, So my “Production Book” for my up coming portfolio is starting to bust at the seams. I just finished the above test image. No, I’m not doing anything related to Levi’s in my portfolio, nor will I be doing a full mock up like the ones previewed on my blog. But the new lighting is what I’m testing. I was noticing that most of my subjects I shoot in the studio had a lack of separation from there respected backgrounds. So I added a rim light and since I also wanted a more gradual fall off on my subjects face I constructed my own DIY softbox. This thing rules.

All I did to construct this half parabolic umbrella, half softbox thingy was take a large reflective bounce umbrella and throw a bed sheet over it. Thats it… cut it to fit, and used tape that wouldn’t allow light spill. It rocks. I think this has a very polished feel to the light. I’m going to go ahead and say that this is the lighting set-up I will be using for my studio models. Here is a diagram of how it’s set up.

Before I end this post I would like to thank my always beautiful girlfriend for standing in, time and time again. Thank you darling, I love you.

It just dawned on my tonight that I’m always talking about how busy I am with weddings and Bridal shoots, but I never show any of that work, in fact i don’t show much new work at all. This is my bride from today, her dream was to have a whimsical Bridal portrait in the a field for her October wedding. Typically I would go find several locations, plan the shoot a couple days ahead of time and then have the session. What I’m begging to notice is that I work 100 tomes more proficient and my stress level is reduced to nothing, if i just take it easy. For instance, I did marginal planing, I found a field. And left the rest up to free thinking, on the spot interpretation. Me and LJ (bride) ended up nailing it first location fist 20 frames. We then enjoyed the rest of our shoot, driving from spot to spot out into the country, whatever called to me. The weather was a big help to, we had so much cloud cover, as you can tell the sun would only come out for a minute or more at a time. The one other thing I noticed by being confidant in my skills and not pre planning so much is the session lasted a quarter of the time, I didn’t even shoot out a 4gb card. All in all, a great day.

Brewmasters Notes:The color of sunshine, with a light fruity aroma and a hint of fruity acidity, Goo

Brewmasters Notes:The color of sunshine, with a light fruity aroma and a hint of fruity acidity, Goose Island Summertime is the perfect summer session ale. A Kölsch beer brewed in the traditional German fashion, you’ll find yourself enjoying and savoring each sip of summertime as much as you do those hot summer days and cool summer nights.

Recipe Information:

Style: German Style Kölsch

Alcohol by Volume: 4.7%
International Bitterness Units: 20
Color: Sunshine
Hops: Mt. Hood, Saaz
Malt: 2 Row, Wheat

Appearance: Pours a sunshine yellow color with a 1-1.5 finger soapy head. A few specks of lacing on the glass.

Aroma: Some grainy malt sweetness, lemony hops, and a touch of pine. Not that complex, but not expected for this light bodied lager.

Taste: Some nice crisp lemon and grassy notes that intensified as the beer warmed a bit. Some dry yeast notes in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Light and crisp. Very Refreshing!

Drinkability/Overall: Great summer bbq and or picnic beer. With its mild flavors it wouldn’t overwhelm any foods that you’d pair it with and could be drank before or after a meal. 6/10
