Post Three: This is Kind of Cool

Konica Minolta came out with a new machine, the vivid 91 and they tested it out with a big project, the Venus de Milo, one of the most famous statues in the world which is displayed at the Louvre.

They invented a 3D Digitizer and ran Venus through the program. Why I think this is so amazing? Because it is something photography coupled with technology and put to use in a new way.

What do you do when you’re the latecomer to a very exclusive party?
You’ve got one of two options:
Dress up like everyone else and blend in with the crowdMake a huge entrance wearing an outfit that’s louder than a Rolling Stones concert
Sony has chosen the latter when it comes to their new digital SLR camera.

expose highlights, or will blow out the highlights when exposure is set for the attention and admiration of professional photographers, while Olympus, Pentax and Minolta preferred to target the consumer market. With the megapixel race pretty much over, these three companies gained consumer attention with their own proprietary features. Olympus developed the Supersonic Wave Filter, a device that “scrubs” the camera’s electronic sensor, removing tiny particles of dust. Pentax made their cameras small and light, some of the Pentax digital SLRs.

Then Sony takes it one step further. The A100 has one feature not available in any camera from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Konica Minolta. Canon and Nikon duked it out for the attention and admiration of professional photographers, while Olympus, Pentax or Minolta. In fact, only two lesser-know cameras made by Fuji have something similar: extended dynamic range is better equipped to capture detail from shadow to light. Cameras can’t.
New Driver Offers Common Interface to Handle Printer Selection for All Networked Devices Ramsey, N.J

New Driver Offers Common Interface to Handle Printer Selection for All Networked Devices

Ramsey, N.J. – November 2, 2009 - Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. (Konica Minolta), a leading provider of advanced imaging and networking technologies for the desktop to the print shop, today announces the launch of the Konica Minolta Universal Print Driver (UPD), a single printer driver for all networked printers. Offering a common interface to handle printer selection throughout a network, automatically detecting and identifying Konica Minolta and all other manufacturers’ printers and MFPs, the UPD offers a full range of functionality thereby increasing overall business efficiency.

With a single user interface (UI) Konica Minolta’s UPD offers various benefits for both IT administrators and users in small to large workgroups alike. Eliminating the need for installation of separate drivers for each networked device, the UPD simplifies complex capabilities by condensing all integrated tasks into a single driver core. The UPD also enables operators to easily add new devices to the current configuration so they are up and running quickly without loss of productivity. Additionally, the UI offers full functionality including layout, finishing and quality for all pre-installed devices.

“By implementing our Universal Print Driver, IT professionals can significantly reduce administration time and costs while concurrently streamlining their printing operations,” said Kevin Kern, Vice President, Marketing, Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. “As businesses continue to look for ways to remain competitive, the ability to manage growing workloads in less time, while not compromising quality or efficiency, is a key concern and one that this solution directly aims to address. Konica Minolta’s new UPD further evidences efforts to ensure that users can always count on Konica Minolta to deliver the cutting edge innovation they need.”

The UPD combines multiple print drivers to meet the needs of networks comprised of new and legacy devices from several manufacturers. Individual Child Drivers connect to model-specific Konica Minolta MFPs and Common Child Drivers connect to other Konica Minolta models and 3rd-party devices. Most recent Konica Minolta MFPs and desktop printers will enjoy full print functionality, while older Konica Minolta devices and third-party printers will also have a basic range of functionality. All devices also benefit from automatic detection and identification.

Konica Minolta’s UPD is also the only printer driver to feature a specific search filter enabling the user to search by feature set. Necessary printing attributes, such as color, 11″ x 17″ or letter-sized paper and duplex printing, can simply be typed into the search field and the filter will show all matching devices.

Ok, time for something a little diverted from the field of design, but it is something which I enjoy

Ok, time for something a little diverted from the field of design, but it is something which I enjoy doing very much, I can spend many an hour doing this and not get bored. What is it? Photography.

Ever since I was very small, I enjoyed playing with camera’s and taking pictures. Some of my earliest memories of using a camera was was using Dad’s Olympus OM10 film SLR camera (which incidentally he still has and is contemplating giving it to me sometime). Getting my first camera was a great moment too, albeit it was effectively a point and shoot camera when I was about 6, and it was used until I was almost 10. After that when I needed one it was just a disposable one until the time came for the first digital camera. This was a major turning point because I could take pictures of everything and everyone and not have to wait until they were developed to see them. It was great. A couple of compact cameras later, growing in price and functionality, I decided in April this year to bite the bullet and get my first DSLR. After many weeks of thought, I went out there to the shops, still without the faintest idea of what one I was wanting to buy. The shop we went to was the same one in which my dad had bought his first proper camera about 30 years before, so I was very excited and he was quite nostalgic.

Having tried many different cameras, Canon’s, Nikon’s, Pentax’s etc, I settled on Sony, mainly because it fitted in my hands well and it had a good weight to it. Camera purists would say I was an idiot for going for a Sony because they are ‘new’ to the field, but in fact they did buy out Konica Minolta’s camera operations a few years before so the quality and functionality of them was right up there from the start. Also, due to picking Sony, I have been informed that they will be the company of choice for my camera and camera needs for essentially the rest of my life. Not a problem for me as I quite like Sony, having had many of their products over the years from a number of walkmans (cassette and CD), a Playstation (1, 2 and 3), a television or two, and a fantastic pair of earphones (though not as good as my newly purchased B&O’s)

Along with the camera and the standard 18-55mm lens, I got a 55-270mm lens and a carrying bag. Awesome!

Since this most recent purchase I do feel as though my photography has come on leaps and bounds because I am more free with the settings of the camera, am able to do what I want to do with it more. With the compact camera’s before it, I was pushing to the limit and in many cases beyond. Just now, I am only using probably about 30-40%, and I can’t wait to see what my photo’s are like when I am using the camera at 110%. In the 7 or 8 months since I bought the camera, I have taken about 10,000 photographs, some good, some pretty shoddy. But my love affair with the camera and the act of photography is growing and growing, and my ideas are becoming more and more ambitious.

Some of my favourite kinds of photographs are panorama’s and light trails. Panorama’s because they require either the use of a tripod, or the ability to swivel very steadily whilst holding the camera making sure it is not moved vertically or angularly from the previous position. The overall result is usually phenomenal even without post processing. Light trails are something which are great fun to do, and something I have only been able to achieve since purchasing the DSLR, the only problem is that it would be so much easier if I had an external shutter control so I could take pictures on the bulb setting, but this is on my purchase list along with a polarising filter. My favourite light trails photograph has to be from July when I was on holiday in Uist, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, the camera was set up on the tripod and I was standing in my room with the velux window wide open, cold air pouring in the window waiting for cars to pass, and because it was 11 o’clock at night, on an island 70 miles long and only with a population of circa 4000, they didn’t pass too often. I had to make do with talking to a friend on msn on my iPhone to pass the time, which did make the arduous task of this much more enjoyable.

If you would like to see some of my work please visit my flickr photostream or my DeviantART where I upload some of my better pieces of work, also all the photographs used to illustrate posts here have been taken by myself, except for the one of the Eigenharp.

I snapped a few shots and chose the best of them all. I really didn’t have any purpose for the shot until I was looking on an image farm site and saw that others have taken a similar shot. Image farms are websites that allow photographers to upload photos to make money. I made over $30 on this image!

I wish I could share all the settings when I took this picture. It was shot with a Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D, 8.1 pixel using a 35 mm lens. The lighting was limited so I used florescent lighting and had my white balance set for the lighting conditions.

Overall conclusion

The SP AF 70-200mm F2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro is certainly a very creditable effort by Tamron to produce a high quality, yet affordable fast telephoto zoom. Indeed if we look solely at the studio optical tests, it is a resounding success, as the technical quality of the images this lens can produce is superb throughout most of the range, matching or even outperforming the much more expensive Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM. It’s slightly soft wide open in the middle of the zoom range (most visibly on the more demanding APS-C/DX sensor format), but stop down a little and the quality really starts to shine through. Resolution is excellent from corner to corner, chromatic aberration is generally very low, and vignetting about average for a lens of this class. The close minimum focus distance is very welcome, especially as image quality holds up pretty well, and the rendition of out-of-focus regions of the image is very pleasant; this may not be a substitute for a true macro lens, but it’s not bad at all. About the only flaws are the slightly high distortion on full frame (unlikely to be a problem for most typical uses of a telephoto zoom) and occasional severe flare issues with strong light sources just outside the frame (which tends to be a weak point of fast telezooms generally).

The big problem with this lens, however, lies in the focusing systems. The autofocus motor is relatively slow and noisy, which puts it at a major disadvantage compared to its ultrasonic motor-equipped competitors, simply because AF performance impacts strongly on many of the typical uses for a fast telezoom lens. The slow speed of the motor means focus tracking simply isn’t fast enough for sports or action, or even children running around playing; it’s also a distinct problem in low light or with low-contrast subjects, where the lens can take what feels like an eternity to achieve focus. This is compounded by the noise the motor makes, which could be a real problem in situations such as wedding or event photography for which the user wishes to remain unobtrusive; discrete it is not. Also the Tamron lacks a focus limiter switch, so has a tendency to hunt back and forwards through its entire range when it fails to lock focus first time. But perhaps the biggest problem we encountered was a tendency for the lens to mis-focus, seemingly at random and disturbingly frequently, such that F2.8 shots in particular were often not critically sharp (although it must be pointed out that this may be specific to either our test sample, or the Canon mount version).

However it’s not just the autofocus system which is an issue, and the manual focus isn’t perfect either. The use of the push-pull clutch on the focus ring to engage manual is a good idea in principle, but not perfectly implemented in practice; the action is remarkably noisy (in context, the click-clunk noises on switching between AF and M are substantially louder than the shutter release on any current DSLR, including the top-end professional models such as the Nikon D3 and Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III), and the focus ring has a bad habit of sticking in an intermediate position in which the gearing isn’t correctly engaged, and manual focus doesn’t work properly. Also, it’s not possible to use autofocus to pre-focus on a specific point then switch to manual, as the focus distance can often be thrown in the switchover. Finally, the manual focus ring is just a little too highly geared, with relatively short travel between infinity and the close focus of 0.95m, making critically accurate manual focus difficult to achieve (certainly outside of live view).

Now it must be acknowledged that we’ve only tested this lens in the Canon EF mount, and we can’t assume it will behave in exactly the same way on other mounts. We’d presume that the Nikon version shares the same AF motor system, so will likely be just as noisy and probably as slow, but may well not suffer from the accuracy problems we observed with Canon bodies. It’s also fair to say that the body-driven Pentax and Sony versions may behave rather better all round. Of course users of these two brands will then have to put up with the irritation of needing to select manual focus using both the body switch and the focus ring clutch, but that would be a small price to pay for the prospect of having these excellent optics benefit from a faster and more consistent autofocus system, especially on a body with built-in image stabilization. (Indeed on that point; it’s a pity Tamron couldn’t have incorporated the impressive stabilization system from their 28-300mm VC lens into the 70-200mm, at least for the Canon and Nikon mount versions.)

So ultimately what we have here is a flawed gem, a lens which fully capable of delivering excellent images, but also frustratingly capable of missing focus on that once-in-a-lifetime shot, either through mis-focus or simply being too slow. And this is a real pity, because the optical quality of this lens is genuinely superb. Now if you shoot mainly outdoors in bright light, the focus speed and noise issues probably won’t be a great problem (especially if you’re not trying to track fast moving subjects), in which case this lens could well be ideal. However if you shoot frequently in low light, need to track erratically moving subjects, or demand quiet operation, then the relatively unrefined autofocus will leave you frustrated. Also, whilst the mis-focusing issues we observed can certainly be mitigated by taking multiple shots if you have the time and opportunity, that’s simply not always possible. Because of these issues, the Tamron 70-200mm F2.8, despite its stellar optics, just fails to take our top award.
