With the parallel surge of interest in the early 80s New York scenes, it’s a good time to discover Konk, an act that was born out of jazz, early hip-hop, and disco to create a fusion (certainly a dangerous word) of the better kind. Led by saxophonist Dana Vlcek, Konk channeled sounds ranging from the alien hooks of P-funk to the stilted grooves of krautrock through early-80s technology.

Of course, a band with such a period-specific sound risks seems more silly than relevant 20 years later, but happily, Konk is both at once. It’s cheesy, for sure, but if you dig good times, then The Sound of Konk– a collection of their singles and LPs (such as Yo! and Jams)– is ready for action.

Like post-punk reference-point the Talking Heads, Konk apply the rhythms and melodies of Latin music within funk’s staccato pulse. But while the Talking Heads’ experimentation is contained in song forms, Konk maintain a funk-sprawl ideology in a system that foretells acid-jazz– a slew of solos and sections announce themselves unprovoked over shifting grooves, creating non-linear yet highly organized multi-part jams.

With several layers of live and electronic percussion, Konk compel movement. You don’t need to dance to enjoy the music, but Konk won’t likely do much for you if you’re sitting still– driving, running, cooking, or partying are all recommended Konk-enhanced activities.

Konk’s integration of live instrumentation and electronic manipulation remains impressive, combining synthesized sounds that are still imperfect enough to sound human with musicians of precise virtuosity. While Konk is often lumped with fellow downtown experimentalists Glenn Branca (with whose ensemble Konk shared members) or ESG, the strongest link there is a shared interest in the deconstruction and reformation of musical elements, especially in live performance.

Simultaneously, Konk shares just as much common ground with the proto-techno of The Art of Noise or Yello. Like these acts, plenty of gated snare drums and Max Headroom-style vocal manipulation keep the mood of Konk gleefully rooted in the 1980s, but Konk’s timeless horn section and airtight basslines save them from the fate of becoming a technological artifact.

The Sound of Konk begins with one of Konk’s most conventional tracks, instrumental “Baby Dee” (the bonus live version includes some excellent Kurtis Blow-style MCing). Delayed female vocals intertwine with a robotic male chorus in “What U Want”, before the song lets loose a prolonged rhythmic breakdown of drums and synth bass. “Love Attack” begins with a monologue highlighting various dangers of an oncoming love attack– such as when “some girls think a kiss is a contract”– segueing into a vocoded chant that could be taken from one of Senor Coconut’s Kraftwerk covers. “Soka La Moka” breaks up the relative rhythmic homogeneity of the album with a tumbling bongo beat and klezmer horns.

To today’s ears, The Sound of Konk combines true dance pleasure and experimentation with the humor of the groovy whiteboy sound embodied/parodied by Gary Wilson.

Should Konk be given credit for the accidents of history, accruing value like a fine wine as their once cutting-edge technology matures into bootylicious kitsch? Should a band be adored for the same criteria that could be used to criticize them? Maybe not, but in the words of Shirley Bassey via Propellerheads, “Why ask your head? It’s your hips that are swinging.” Beneath Konk’s dated sound is some, well, intelligent dance music, and given the current popularity of !!!, or live/electronic hybrids like VHS or Beta, Soul Jazz chose the right time to unleash The Sound of Konk upon a funk-hungry land.

In the era of digital music downloads, very few of us actually buy full albums anymore.  For a while now, I’ve used iTunes to purchase singles, or I’ve added them to my playlist on Playlist.com.  Not long ago, I read an interview with Tori Amos where she decried this trend of the digital music age, saying that when an artist creates an album, they’re really telling a story.  When someone pulls out bits and pieces of that story, they’re missing out on the experience as the artist intended.  I discussed this with a colleague of mine recently, who made the point that some musicians who are truly artists (such as Tori Amos), really are telling stories, while other musicians  (like Brittney or Lady GaGa) are just making singles.

In light of all of this, I’ve decided to stop buying singles and start buying albums again.  In fact, I may even buy the actual physical CDs instead of just downloading from iTunes. I can always rip the files later if I feel like adding them to my iPod.

So, in the spirit of listening to an entire album, I have made a list of albums I’ve purchased in the last few years that are great from beginning to end.  To be fair, there are several albums I’ve bought in the recent past that I really don’t like in their entirety, but it’s always a crap shoot.  Like anything in life, the best experiences follow risks taken.

Natalie Walker – Urban Angel: Technically “electronic,” but very mellow and really cool; her voice is amazing

Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos – The Dust of Retreat: Don’t let the name fool you; they are not bizarre or weird, just an indie pop band out of Indiana

Adele – 19: More commercially successful than a lot of the albums I’ve purchased recently, so this is not such a revelation, but it’s a truly spectacular album so it’s definitely worth a mention

The Kooks – Konk: This is an indie rock band out of England. Their music is super catchy and lots of fun – this album always puts me in a good mood

Rodrigo y Gabriela – Rodrigo y Gabriela: They are a guitar duo out of Mexico, and all the songs are instrumental. If that sound bizarre, give it a whirl anyway. At the very least, it’s cool background music for a summer party (margaritas optional)

You already know how I feel about the Trashcan Sinatras recent release In the Music, so I will not nag by mentioning it again here (even though it’s awesome). 

I am open to any and all recommendations you may have for me.

PS: I recently purchased Tori Amos’ new album Abnormally Attracted to Sin.  I am disappointed to report that I find it a little bit strange, but I’m trying really hard to give it a chance. I’m hoping it’s one of those albums that grows on you over time.

Очередная британская инди-рок группа, появившаяся в Брайтоне (Англия) в 2004 году и взявшая себе название песни Дэвида Боуи “Kooks”. Весьма милые поющие англичане Люк, Хью, Пол и Дэн в прошлом году порадовали нас студийным альбомом “Konk”, занявщим первое место в британских чартах. Их музыка заряжает приятными эмоциями, радостью и какой-то легкостью. “Куксовский” сингл “Naive” с его звучанием подобным  тысячам маленьких молоточков является по мнению фанатов группы одной из самых веселый и радостных песен “The Kooks”, о чем кстати говорят 11 с лишним тысяч прослушиваний на LastFM.

Начинали The Kooks на фестивале FreeButt Brighton, где их заметили представитили рекорд-лэйбла Virgin Records. Ровно через два года у группы вышел дебютный студийный альбом “Inside in/Inside out”, имевший нешуточный успех и разошедшийся почти двухмиллионным тиражом. В течении полугода пластинка не выпадала из UK Top 20 и трижды становилась платиновой. С альбома выпущено 6 синглов, в том числе и вышеуказанный “Naive”. В 2006 году “Кукс” получили наградуна MTV Europe Music Awards как Лучшие исполнители Великобритании и Ирландии, а так же номинацию в категории “Лучший Новый исполнитель” на Q Awards.

Последний вышедший альбом “Konk” немного отличается от дебютного. В частности звучанием. Уже в первой работе  ”See The Sun” проглядывают нотки акустического попа, ведь, как говорят сами ребята их творчество “эклектично и всегда открыто для экспериментов”. Заводной голос Люка Причарда прям таки скандирует “do dodo do do do do” в песне “Always Where I Need To Be”  из саундтрека к фильму “Девушка моего лучшего друга”.

Сейчас группа находится в турне и кстати вчера (19.06.09) выступила в Бразилии. Веселая четверка продолжает радовать фанатов по всему миру своими приносящими удовольствие работами…

I 1999 kåret magasinet TEGN Jason til Norges fjerde beste serieskaper og Lomma full av regn til tidenes beste norske tegneserie. Men det var bare begynnelsen. Denne teksten ble skrevet i anledning 1999-kåringen.

“Holder del to [av Vent litt...] like høy standard blir Vent litt… et av de virkelige høydepunktene i norsk tegneseriehistorie, og fortsetter Jason sin raske utvikling bør ikke Christopher Nielsen sitte for trygt på den norske serietronen,” skrev jeg om Jason i 1999. Og sannelig fikk jeg rett. Her er hele teksten:

John Arne Sæterøys filmatiske fortellerstil er ingen tilfeldighet. Han har selv sagt at han er mer inspirert av film enn tegneserier, og fremhever Hal Hartley og Jim Jarmusch som  viktige forbilder. Men som med Christopher Nielsen er det en dyp satsing og tro på tegneseriemediet som har ført Jason til den norske tegneserietoppen på rekordtid.

Moldenseren Jason skapte sin første tegneserie etter at han hadde lest Tintin: Faraos sigarer som barn; en serie han selv beskriver som Hitchcock for barn. Sine første “profesjonelle” serier lagde Jason for KOnK, mens hans selv gikk på videregående skole. Etter debuten lagde han korte serier for Humorparaden og Fidus, men ingen kunnee ventet seg en slik albumdebut som Lomma full av regn, som ble utgitt i 1995, og som senere er oversatt til svensk.

“Handlingen er ikke så viktig”, sa Jason om albumet, og fortalte videre at historien kom av seg selv underveis i arbeidet med den 45 sider lange serien. “Jeg visste at serien skulle begynne med en mann som blir gravd ned i en ørken, men jeg hadde ingen anelse om at det ville ende på Påskeøya. Jeg arbeidet med omtrent ti sider av gangen og måtte begynne å tenke på slutten da jeg var omtrent halvveis. Hvis jeg hadde hatt et ferdig manus, ville jeg fort gått lei”.

Og mellom den nedgravde mannen og Påskeøya skjer det mer enn i ti årganger av Pyton. Sosialsurrealisme kalte utgiveren det, men samtidig skinner det igjennom at Jason er en dyktig beskriver av mellommenneskelige forhold. Dialogscenene er solide, og de mange surrealistiske innslagene kan i dag virke noe påtrengte og unødvendige. Likefullt stakk Lomma full av regn av med seieren i TEGNs kåring av tidenes beste norske tegneserie, mye på grunn av fantasirikdommen og den bunnsolide fortellerteknikken. Lomma full av regn er på samme tid lettlest og utfordrende.

Før Lomma full av regn laget Jason en tegneserieversjon av Stein Rivertons Jernvognen, som hovedfagsoppgave på Kunst- og håndverkskolen i Oslo. Men Jason gikk lei etter 13 sider, og fortsatte med kortere historier i Fidus og Forresten. I 1997 ga han ut det første av i alt fire numre av soloheftet Mjau Mjau på Jippi Forlag, og fikk alburom til å utvikle seg videre.

Tonen i Jasons serier er gjennomgående ganske svart, med en overhengende følelse av uvirkelighet og maktesløshet. Lykkelige mellommenneskelige forhold beskrives som regel i ettertid, etter at ting har skjært seg, og den pessimistiske og klaustrofobiske grunntonen minner på mange måter om amerikaneren Adrian Tomine. I 1998 vant Jason Dagbladets tegneseriekonkurranse, og en absurd og drømmeaktig humor på linje med Jim Woodring er blitt mer tydelig i hans serier. Stripete (gjenopptrykket i Mjau Mjau nr. 2)viser en elegant, visuell og underfundig humor, mens andre absurde serier som D.V., X-Pilt og Corto Mjautese  viser en dyp kjærlighet overfor popkulturen, med skrudde hyllester til Star Wars, X-Files, Pompel og Pilt og Corto Maltese.

Jasons siste verk er Vent litt… i Mjau Mjau nr. 3 og 4, som allerede etter første del havnet helt oppe på fjerdeplass på TEGNs liste over tidenes beste norske tegneserier. Her forenes Jasons surrealisme, presise menneskebeskrivelser og absurde humor i en rørende og urovekkende skildring av uskyldig barndom. Holder del to like høy standard blir Vent litt… et av de virkelige høydepunktene i norsk tegneseriehistorie, og fortsetter Jason sin raske utvikling bør ikke Christopher Nielsen sitte for trygt på den norske serietronen.

Since we last brought you an update on the twelvedoors.com project Konk has been busy, not only with his exhibition downstairs at All City Records but also this month’s installation. The Dublin based writer states the reasoning to the vibrant color scheme is “to get in your fave weather you like it or not!” The 22 year old Sean Bryan, who has of late been ‘keeping it legal’, is working on a book of Irish graffiti, something everyone here at irishstreetart.com are looking froward to.

Tal como anunciamos hace un par de días, la banda inglesa The Kooks estaría visitando nuestro país para presentarse el 13 de junio en nuestra capital. Si bien en el sitio oficial de la banda aún no aparece nuestro país como destino formal, ya van varios medios de prensa de internet que aseguran que la conocida productora local DG Medios, habría confirmado la información. Como nos gusta prepararnos y no queremos que nadie se pierda la oportunidad de deleitarse con la música y energía de The Kooks, dFrente les trae una pequeña receña de este notable conjunto.

La banda fue formada el año 2004, en Brighton-Inglaterra, en el Brighton Institute of Modern Music, donde todos sus integrantes eran estudiantes. Así, Luke Pritchard (guitarra y voz), Hugh Harris (guitarra), Max Rafferty y Paul Garred (batería), unieron fuerzas y crearon The Kooks, formación que se vio modificada cuando en 2008 el bajista abandonó el grupo y fue reemplazado por Peter Denton.  El nombre fue tomado inicialmente de la canción “Kooks” (1971) de David Bowie, incluida en su album “Hunky Dory”. Sin embargo, cuando intentaron registrar el nombre, se dieron cuenta que un grupo sueco ya había lanzado un disco llamado “Too Much is Not Enough” bajo el nombre Kooks, por lo que se vieron obligados a agregarle el “The”.

De la mano de Virgin Records, la banda hizo su debut con “Inside In Inside Out”, album de clara orientación Indie, donde destaca la irreverencia y vitalidad de estos jóvenes tanto en sus letras como melodías, dejando ver influencias de grupos como The Strokes, The Everly Brother y Funkadelic. No tuvo que pasar mucho tiempo para que el público recibiera con los brazos abiertos el trabajo de The Kooks y ya con “You Don’t Love Me” lograron entrar a los top 20 en el Reino Unido, aunque fue “Naive” el que logró un mayor éxito, alcanzando el quinto lugar del ranking. Con ello, el album lleva más de un millón de copias vendidas sólo en el Reino Unido y tres discos de platino.

Producido por Tony Hoffer (Beck, Air, The Fratellis), la banda lanzó “Konk”, su segundo trabajo de estudio (grabado en Konk Studios al norte de Londres), el cual fue publicado en Abril de 2008, donde su primer single y carta de presentación “Always Where I need to Be”, deja más que claro que The Kooks aún tiene mucho que decir y seguirá sonando fuerte. Although he may be best known for his inclusion on Michael Mayer’s Immer 2 compilation, Todd Terje ain’t much of a house and techno guy. Disco is his game. The Norwegian DJ/producer is a compatriot of the Lindstrom/Prins Thomas axis of dance music, a cabal of Scandinavians continuing the Idjut Boys skewed version of disco and Balearic beach sounds. Terje’s specialty is the edit. His official and unofficial reworkings of tunes by artists as diverse as Curtis Mayfield, Paul Simon and KC & The Sunshine Band have gained him a following among adventurous listeners and DJs alike.

“Konk” is my “album of the week.”

“The greatest records in the world can be put on in any situation: you can put them on at a party and they’re going to sound great, you could put them on in a club and they’re going to sound great, you could put them on on your headphones and listen in bed. That’s when you get a great album,” says Luke Pritchard, frontman for the Kooks on the band’s website.

The album can be sampled on Itunes, or at Lastfm.

While I could give an entire run-down of the album song-by-song, I’d rather you decide for yourself if you like it or not. However, I will say that key tracks include:

‘Gap’, ‘Sway’, ‘See the Sun’, ‘Down to the Market’,  ’One Last Time’, and to a lesser extent: ‘Always Where I Need to Be’, and ‘Mr. Maker’.

The band is from Brighton, UK originally–where I used to live when I went to Sussex Uni! . The band’s previous album “Inside In/Inside Out,” is also a solid LP that I’d highly recommend if you aren’t into the guitar-heavy/poppier “Konk.”

 ’Naive,’ their first big hit, is the song that might hook you at first on that album, but the tracks ‘Seaside,’ ‘Do You Love Me Still?’ and ‘She Moves in Her Own Way’ are the ones that will be placed on repeat after the initial poppy tracks run flat. ‘Matchbox’ is a great party track, with lines like:

“Viciously, she sleeps
Walks alone her lonely beat”

and

“All of us, we’re going out tonight
We’re gonna walk all over your cars
The Kooks are out in the streets
Oh we’re gonna steal your signs”

The “Konk” LP proves, The Kooks are here to stay. Though still not really huge stateside, I think they will get their big break if they can produce a third album that continues to build off the success of their first two efforts. Here’s an image gallery of the band from Lastfm:

January is a depressing month, even more so when it’s at the beginning of a recession. This city and it’s people need something to smile about again and we need you to help make it happen.

Free Art Friday is a relatively new art movement that’s rapidly gaining in popularity around the World. Artists create a painting, sketch, sculpture or installation and leave it on the street. The piece can then be picked up by anyone and claim it as their own. Finders are encouraged to email the artist and tell them how and where they found it. We’re asking all painters, photographers, illustrators, sculptures, graffiti artists, taggers, cartoonists or any visual artist to contribute a small piece of work that will be hung/placed/or left on the streets of Dublin on Friday 23rd January for anyone to take away.

Rok 2008 dobiega końca. Czas najwyższy by podsumować muzyczne dokonania artystów w tym roku. Czy był to dobry rok pod względem wydanej muzyki? Ciężko odpowiedzieć. Pojawiły się bardzo dobre płyty, te mniej dobre i te całkiem do dupy. Zatem zupełnie naturalnie. Kategorie nie uległy zmianie. Tak jak w poprzednim roku napiszę i o płytach, singlach i teledyskach. Jest to moja subiektywna ocena. Zatem nie musicie się z tym zgadzać co napiszę. Wszystko z lajtem bo zdaje sobie sprawę, że nie przesłuchałem wielu płyt. To tyle tytułem wstępu. Pora zacząć długo wyczekiwane podsumowanie!!!

Zagraniczna płyta 2008 – czyli zagraniczne produkcje, które najbardziej mnie zachwyciły i najczęściej ich słuchałem:

1. Cut Copy – In Ghost Colours. Najlepszy electro-indie-pop w tym roku jaki słyszałem. Melodyjnie, tanecznie i ogólnie wykurwiście. Świetna robota w wykonaniu Australijczyków. Dla mnie bomba.

2. Fleet Foxes – Fleet Foxes. Tym razem coś amerykańskiego. Ta płyta mnie tak zachwyciła, że słucham jej tylko w zaciszu domowym. Kto nie słuchał ten trąba.

3. MGMT – Oracular Spectacular. Do tej płyty początkowo nie byłem zbytnio przekonany, jednak później się okazało, że towarzyszyła mi i na zakupach i w drodze do pracy bądź uczelnie. Natomiast Time to Pretend to dla niektórych Wonderwall tego dziesięciolecia.

Poza listą: Albert Hammond, Jr. – ¿Como Te Llama?, British Sea Power – Do You Like Rock Music?, Cold War Kids – Loyalty to Loyalty, TV on The Radio – Dear Science, Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend.

Polska płyta 2008 – podobnie jak powyżej tylko chodzi o płyty z rodzimego rynku:

1. Materac – Andersen Dobranoc. Pisałem nie dawno recenzję także wiadomo dlaczego. Maciek Cieślak w formie plus wokal Zagańskiego plus kreatywność muzyczna Koprowskiego = płyta roku.

2. Iowa Super Soccer – Lullabies To Keep Your Eyes Closed. Szkoda, że po angielsku bo być może byłaby wyżej w moim notowaniu.

3. Waglewski Fisz Emade – Męska Muzyka. Jeżeli chodzi o dwójkę synów Waglewskiego to wolę ich twórczość razem z ojcem. Ta płyta jest naprawdę dobra.

Poza listą:Afro Kolektyw – Połącz Kropki,  Cool Kids of Death – Afterparty, Renton – Take-Off.

Najgorsza zagraniczna płyta 2008 – tutaj bardziej chodzi o to, które płyty najbardziej zawiodły moje oczekiwania, które najbardziej mnie wkurwiały i te które zbierały dobre oceny pomimo tego, że są gówniane.

1. Glasvegas – Glasvegas. Nie rozumiem jak można się zachwycać takim gównem. Patetyczne jodłowanie, nieudolne granie, perkusja na poziomie uderzania ołówkiem w szklankę, stwarzanie pozorów. Im się tylko wydaje. Im się wszystkim kurwa wydaje!

2. The Kooks – Konk. W ciul mnie zawiedli, stracili mój kredyt zaufania, który im dałem po nagranym debiucie.

3. One Night Only – Started a Fire. Nie ogarniam.

Poza listą: CSS – Donkey, Kaiser Chiefs – Off with Their Heads, The Killers – Day & Age,The Ting Tings – We Started Nothing, We Are Scientists – Brain Thrust Mastery.

1. Out of Tune – Out of Tune – Boże co za gówno na nas zesłałeś! Dlaczego nam to robisz?

2. Czesław Śpiewa – Debiut – miły koleś, ale muzę ma chujową.

3. Dick4Dick – Grey Album – niby oryginalni, ale wtórni.

Zagraniczny singiel 2008:

1. Black Kids – I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You. Zajebista piosenka. szkoda, że cała ich płyta nie jest tak miażdżąca.

2. MGMT – Kids – szaaaaaaaaaaaaałłłłłłłłłł

3. Will.I.AM – Heartbreaker – Komercyjny pop też jest spoko. Nie tylko samo indie.

3. Video – Ide na Plaże. Teraz to już klasyk polskiej muzyki rozrywkowej! W porywach 10.0

Zagraniczny wykonawca Live 2008:

1. Of Montreal – Kto był na Offie ten wie, że ten gig najbardziej wymiótł. Prawdziwe show.Nawet zjebana pogoda nie zepsuła mi tego.

2. British Sea Power – Taki mały Muse z nich ^^. Chodzi o występ, który dali w Mysłowicach.

3. Mogwai – Ja tam doznawałem, nie wiem jak reszta. Jebie mnie to.

1. Muchy – Mimo tej dzieciarni pod sceną podobało mi się.

2. Cool Kids of Death – wiem, że to już nie te same emocje co niegdyś, ale nadal rządzą.

3. The Kooks – Always Where I Need To Be – Ta świńska skóra niszczy mój umysł, zniewala mnie, dobija. Widoczne inspiracje One Night Only!!

Zagraniczne odkrycie 2008:

Fleet Foxes. W tym roku panowali wszędzie. Na lądzie, wodzie, powietrzu i kosmosie!

Polskie odkrycie 2008:

Materac. Mimo, że nagrywali wcześniej to w tym roku pokusili się o własną płytę i to był dobry ruch z ich strony!

No i to w zasadzie wszystko. Powiem to co powiedziałem rok temu kończąć podumowanie:  “Jeżeli Paweuu Alternativ Blog będzie funkcjonował dalej to będzie można się spodziewać takiego podsumowania już w grudniu 2008!”.
