posta elettronica: KMail

chat: Kopete, Konversation

torrent: KTorrent

ufficio: OpenOffice.org

grafica: Gwenview (viewer), Gimp (editor), digiKam, showFoto

audio: Amarok

video: Kaffeine

navigazione file: Dolphin

KDE 4 has this nice plasma widget called ‘device notifier’, which shows attached devices such as USB flash drives, CD/DVD drives, or digital cameras.

Device Notifier

Clicking on this icon shows all attached devices, in my example it is a single USB flash drive named ‘256MThFisch’.

Device Notifier plasma widget

Clicking on such a device brings up a list of possible actions, e.g. to browse the files with Dolphin or Konqueror, downloading all photos with digiKam, or playing music titles with Amarok.

List of actions with device

Well, this is quite nice for users relying on KDE software only. But what happens if you are a power-user, using terminals such as Konsole? Whenever you want to mount a device, you have to start an application such as Dolphin, Konqueror, or digiKam even if you do not want to use it …

Adding your own Action for Mounting

As KDE4 is very configurable, you can improve this situation. In the System Settings you can configure which action are available when a storage medium becomes available. Here, we are going to add our own action which ‘just’ mounts a device.

System Settings - Advanced

Configuration of Actions for Devices

To add you own action, click on the ‘Add’ button and enter a name for the new action, such as ‘Mount’.

Adding a new action

In this new action, you can an icon which resembles that action of mounting. In my case, I chose
emblem-mounted.png
from the
emblems
directory in the Oxygen icon set. For the command to execute, you can enter any command you like. If you want to see no feedback, use
/bin/true
. In my example, I used
/usr/bin/kdialog --msgbox
to get a message box showing a confirmation once the mount process is complete.

Next time you plug in an USB drive, a new option will show up to ‘just’ mount you device without starting any bloated application.

List of actions, 'just mount' option included

Once you activate the ‘Mount’ option, it takes 1-2 seconds and a message box pops up confirming the mount operation. The device is read to use in any application.

Message box

Current Issues

The current approach has some minor issues which may get addressed in later improvements:

Cases where the mounting operation fails are not handled

The message box does not show the devices name, type or mount point

Still, good luck with testing this ‘hack’

navigazione web: Firefox e Konqueror (già inclusi svariati plugins)
posta elettronica: KMail
voip: Ekiga
chat: Kopete, Quassel IRC
ufficio: OpenOffice.org, Okular (visore di svariati tipi di documenti)
grafica: Gwenview (viewer), Gimp (editor)
audio: Amarok
video: Dragon Player
navigazione file: Dolphin

navigazione web: Konqueror

posta elettronica: KMail

chat: Kopete, Quassel IRC

torrent: KTorrent

audio: Amarok

video: Dragon Player

CD burning: K3b

navigazione file: Dolphin

Xubuntu

navigazione web: Firefox

posta elettronica: Thunderbird

chat: Pidgin, XChat IRC

torrent: Transmission

ufficio: Abiword, Gnumeric

grafica: Ristretto (viewer), Gimp (editor)

audio: Exaile

video: Totem

CD burning: Brasero

navigazione file: Thunar

This is an update on my open letter sent to the Ambassador/Consulate of USA in India, and the VFS office complaining that their site is not interoperable and does not work with Mozilla Firefox. I received no reply for two weeks, then I sent another reminder email, to which they replied saying: “There is no other alternative.” Considering this I reiterate my protest and will not honour any invitation from USA till they commit to rectify and make it interoperable so that free software users are not forced to use proprietary software.

Meanwhile, I reactivated my application to try again and discovered that the site does not work with Mozilla Firefox but manages to work with Konqueror. The fields in the application however are misaligned in most places. It is difficult to say without further investigation whether this is due to bad coding on the server side or on the browser side. I could not test it through the process since no date before 21st of October 2009 is possible even under emergency category, therefore I gave up.

Free software users are increasing in number all over the world. Unless such roadblocks are cleared we cannot build a greener digital environment. Fight for freedom even if it is expensive!

· Archivo xbel/xml.

Arora. Archivo–> Importar marcadores o Exportar marcadores.

Konqueror.

/home/"usuario"/.kde/share/apps/Konqueror/bookmarks.xml

Midori.

/home/"usuario"/.config/midori/bookmarks.xbel

Those of you who have been following my Linux Critic blog know that I’ve been on an app-hunt t

Those of you who have been following my Linux Critic blog know that I’ve been on an app-hunt to replace some of the applications to which I’ve grown used to in KDE, mostly so that I can break my ties with that desktop and move forward completely without it. So far I’ve had some measure of success in this task, so I thought I’d do a writeup in case anyone else out there is moving on from KDE and needs some ideas about how to do that.

Finding replacement apps: It’s like switching from Windows to Linux all over again

It feels like I just did this, even though I’ve been running Linux as my primary OS since around 2002. When I decided to stop using KDE recently, I was surprised to find how many KDE applications on which I had become dependent, and how little idea I had what to use as alternatives. Some of them are little and therefore easily replaced, but others that are more full-featured have been quite a challenge. Here’s a sampling of the ones I’ve been working on lately.

Konqueror File Manager

This one is quite possibly the hardest one I’ve had to replace. Anyone out there who has grown accustomed to the power and flexibility of Konqueror File Manager can attest that it’s very difficult to settle on something else once you’ve used it for any length of time.

Fortunately for me, there are many file managers out there for Linux, so I had options a-plenty, but none quite so robust as Konqueror, so I simply found that I had to compromise a number of things in the process. In the end, no single file manager fit my needs, so I replaced Konqueror with two: Thunar and XFE. I chose these two ultimately because they both have a tree-view in the left-pane and a folder/file view in the right-pane, and they both let you type your path into an address/location bar instead of clicking through a bunch of breadcrumbs (I hate file managers that only give you breadcrumbs).

Thunar is pretty, and simple, and has some nice features like thumbnail previews of image files, and it’s very lightweight when compared to Konqueror (but face it, just about ANY file manager is lightweight when compared to Konqueror). For most file management tasks, Thunar does pretty well, with the only thing I really miss out of it being the lack of tabs. One complaint I have about Thunar is that there doesn’t seem to be a way to turn off the stupid delete confirmation dialogue.

Really? Seriously? I know that shouldn’t drive me nuts, but come on. It makes me feel like I’m using Windows 98 again. In fact, in my testing, I also gave PCManFM a try, and that one even has tabs… but it too had no way to disable the delete confirmation dialogue.

I have what I consider to be very simple tests to determine whether a file manager doesn’t suck, and this is one of them. It’s not a complicated thing.

So, when I get tired of that particular FAIL in Thunar, I switch to XFE. XFE is lightning fast, very Konqueror-like in its flexibility and power, but it has a couple of annoyances as well. XFE also doesn’t have tabs, but I discovered that pretty much everywhere, and I can live with that if I have to, but some basic behavior in XFE bugs me.

Example: You just copied a bunch of files into the clipboard and you navigate to the folder into which you wish to paste them. If that folder is full, anywhere you right-click to paste just shows the context-menu for the file in that spot. Basically put, if there’s no white space for you to right-click on, there’s no way to paste into that folder, aside from going up a level and right-clicking ON that folder and selecting paste.

Like the delete confirmation stupid I mentioned above, this is a little thing that should not bother me that much, but it does. I found myself getting burned by this simple behavior time and time again, and it eventually frustrates me and slows me down so much (I’m used to flying through file management tasks with Konqueror) that I close XFE and go back to Thunar.

I actually really like XFE in nearly every other way… the fact that it has an integrated editor (“xfw”) and the myriad configuration options in the “Preferences” give me lots of ways to make it do what I want it to do.

However, I have discovered, unsurprisingly, that replacing Konqueror is a tough task. In the end, what I have is a pair of applications (Thunar and XFE) that I alternate between based on whichever one happens to be annoying me the most at any given time. This may change down the road, of course. Maybe Thunar will end up with tabs and a way to shut off the “HAY STUPID, ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DELEET THAT?” dialogue, and maybe the XFE devs will make some of its rather counter-intuitive behavior here and there (like I described above with copying and pasting) go away. Or, maybe some friendly reader here will pipe in and say “hey! Why don’t you try $XYZ? It’s just like Konqueror, but BETTER!” and suggest something that I never ran across that is a critic’s dream of a file manager. Who knows?

Kontact

I’ve written on switching to Thunderbird before, but I felt it relevant to mention it here, given the rest of the discusssion.

Kontact is a full-featured “personal information manager”, not just a mail client. The only other all-in-one such app that does everything that Kontact does out-of-the-box that I found in the open source universe was Evolution, and my recent experiences with Evolution have been less than happy, so I looked elsewhere. What I discovered was that Thunderbird had improved quite a bit over the past few years since I last tried it, and since there are more add-ons for it than you can shake a proverbial stick at, I thought that I might be able to get it to do at least a few of the things I wanted, namely Google calendaring and tasks on top of just POP mail.

I was right. With the Lightning add-on, I had a really nice integrated calendar, and I found out that it can talk to Google for calendaring (which is one up on Kontact… I had to do some pretty goofy stuff to get Kontact to do that even in a half-assed fashion, as opposed to Thunderbird with Lightning, a “full-assed” solution).

So for me anyway, Thunderbird with one simple add-on was enough for me to replace Kontact. It’s a solid mail client, and installing one add-on didn’t impact its performance by any measurable amount, and it added some great calendaring functionality, so I’m pretty happy with the results of this alternative.

Amarok

Amarok, like Konqueror, was another hard one to replace. While there are tons of open source music player applications out there, most of them are pretty feature-light. In fact, most of the ones I tested that liked to pretend to be “full featured” turned out to be less usable than even the lightweight XMMS. While there’s nothing wrong with XMMS, when you compare it to Amarok, it’s like comparing a compact economy car to a Cadillac. Yes, both will get you to where you’re going and they both do their stated job well, but when you’re used to the Cadillac, going to the compact economy car will leave you feeling short-changed.

So I tried a fair number of music players out there, including (but not limited to) Songbird, Banshee, Rhythmbox, and Audacious, and found that none of them were an adequate replacement for Amarok. I’d almost given up, but I had one more to try, and I’m glad I did try it. That one was Exaile.

Exaile is practically a GTK+ implementation of Amarok, it’s so close in form and function. It organizes your music library with a simple tree on the left, has an integrated album cover manager, sane buttons for controls, a big queue list that can be loaded simply by right-clicking on an artist, album, or song and selecting “append to current”, and the ability to create playlists very quickly and easily.

K3b

I haven’t found a replacement for K3b yet. Brasero is the one people always suggest, but I just find it a lot less intuitive than K3b. I can live with it, I suppose, but I’m still in the process of searching when it comes to DVD/CD burning.

Quanta

Like K3b, I haven’t found a replacement for Quanta yet. Bluefish is the one everyone suggests as an alternative to Quanta, but there really is no comparison. Granted, I don’t do a huge amount of web authoring, but I have grown very attached to Quanta for writing my Linux Critic articles, since I prefer to just write in straight-up HTML rather than use the WYSIWYG editor in WordPress, and Bluefish doesn’t even come close to making that process as fast and as slick as Quanta does. So I’m still looking in this particular department as well.

A resource I need to use more

One thing I should mention, for anyone else out there that is also going through something similar, is a great place on the web to find alternates to various applications. Osalt.com has a huge list of applications to suggest if one is looking for another option for anything.

For example, just digging around a bit to look for Quanta alternatives yields this page which lists a fair number of applications I still have yet to try, so obviously I need to spend more time on that site in my endeavoring to replace KDE applications.

I’ll write up an update if or when I make any more progress in this task!

Most users take their file managers for granted. It’s there, it does its job, and that’s all they care about. But to Linux users, the file manager is as close to their hearts as their text editor. There is a reason for this: With the Linux operating system, and the various desktops, there are quite a few file managers. Each has standard as well as unique features. In fact, there are so many file managers, and so many unique features, it’s time someone listed 10 of the best choices. See if one of these file managers meets (or surpasses) your needs.

1: Command line

Although the command line isn’t just a file manager, you can’t have a listing of Linux file management tools without including it Without these tools, working on headless servers would be a challenge (unless you’re using remote desktop). And being someone who cut his Linux teeth with the command line, not a day goes by where I do not use it for something.

I just merged my branch of Konqueror searchbar plugin that supports Opensearch [1] mainly to replace my own implementation of search suggestion. Opensearch has an xml formatted open search description, that may contain search url and suggestion service url. To parse the xml, I borrowed Arora’s open search xml parser and writer, written by Jakub Wieczorek.

The suggestions list from the searchbar still looks the same:

The searchbar also supports opensearch autodiscovery [2], meaning that if you find a site that provides a search implementation, you can easily add that new search provider to the searchbar. Additionally, you can set a new shortcut for that newly defined search provider, so that you can use that webshortcut inside the normal konqueror location bar or anything that supports webshortcut.

Here are two screenshots of the searchbar detecting an opensearch autodiscovery link element and the searchbar asking for a webshortcut for the newly added searchbar:

Why do I need to bother to add autodiscovery feature that is rarely used by user? Well, I also don’t know, maybe just to make it comparable to other browsers like FF or arora or IE8 :p

Konqueror.

Muestra las búsquedas con una ventana superpuesta.

I have found a ton of tutorials teaching how to disable the context menu on browsers and in all of them I have found one flaw:

Does not work with Opera

It’s an anoying situation that got me thinking and searching for a solution through most part of the day and with no luck.

The function is simple:

$(document).ready(function()
{
$(document).bind(“contextmenu”, function(e)
{
return false;
});
});

and it works with (tested):

Firefox (3 and 3.5 – Windows and Linux)

Safari (Windows)

Internet Explorer (All versions – Windows – amazing )

Google Chrome (Windows)

and it does not work with (tested)

Opera (Windows)

Konqueror (Linux)

Epiphany (Linux)

After a lot of research I have found why it does not work with Opera:

Opera (9.5) has an option to allow scripts to detect right-clicks, but it is disabled by default. Furthermore, Opera still doesn’t allow JavaScript to disable the browser’s default context menu which causes a usability conflict.

You can try to disable by disabling the mousedown event filtering only for Opera, but I do suggest a lot testing on this.

To complete just an extra note: this function does not bind the documents inside an iframe, so in this case you should complete the function by disabling the context menu in the iframe document as well.

As a KDE user, Konqueror is my favorite browser. It offers smooth integration into KDE, both in look

As a KDE user, Konqueror is my favorite browser. It offers smooth integration into KDE, both in looks and features (e.g. using the Okular part to view PDFs). Its rendering engine is so good that it was forked into WebKit used in Apple’s Safari and Qt. One aspect Konqueror lacks in comparison to Firefox, though, is the support of plugins/addons of all kinds to add more features to the browser. There is a set of security and privacy enhancing plugins for Firefox I use myself and recommend to others. One of them is AdBlock Plus which uses a well-maintained list of URLs to block if you want to experience the net with less annoyance.

On the other side, Konqueror has a similar adblocking functionality built-in since KDE 3.5 (late 2005). In the configuration dialog, users can add fragments or regular expressions of URLs to be blocked. Maintaining such a list yourself is quite cumbersome, especially if you have accounts on several computers. At least since March 2007 there has been a feature request in KDE’s bug tracking system to add an automatic updater to Konqueror’s ad-filtering.

Last weekend, I started to scratch the itch and implemented an automatic filter list updater. Luckily, the internal format of AdBlock entries in Konqueror matches the one use by AdBlock Plus, except that some advanced features are not (yet) supported. Based on the then-current KDE 4.2.4 code I made changes to both kdelibs and kdebase. The former one contains the KHTML component including the actual filter, the latter contains the code for Konqueror’s settings GUI.

The changes I made to kdelibs work as follows: Read the khtmlrc configuration file to get a list of filter files following the format used by AdBlock Plus. My example configuration file contains several lists from easylist.adblock.org. The filter list files are downloaded and cached if no local copy is available or if it is outdated. Each filter list file is loaded and added to Konqueror’s current filter list each time the browser is started. The user-configured filter list is not modified, as the changes occur in memory only.

If you edit your khtmlrc manually to add new filter lists, this works already fine without GUI. For a better usability experience, I modified Konqueror’s settings dialog so that users can select from a list of preconfigured filter lists (currently, all lists from EasyList) which to actually use. Additionally, the time interval to refresh the lists can be configured.

I refrained from adding an option to add, modify or delete list entries in the GUI. This is simply for two reasons: (1) Users may tend to enter filter lists that do not follow the format (e.g. from other adblocking filter sites) and (2) the list of available filter lists does not change that often that it cannot be changed in the next monthly update of KDE.

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
